Steering Wheel Position Sensor Replacement 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L

  • My truck has been giving me issues with the Traction Control and Stabilitrak System for months. Every time I turn the steering wheel the slightest bit the traction control would turn off and a message on the dash stating to service traction control and stabilitrak systems. I played around with it to see exactly when it would post and troubleshot it to the Steering Wheel Position Sensor. The video isn't the greatest but hopefully it can help someone out if they are having the same issues.

    Thank you Ricky for this video! I was getting the Service Stabilitrac Error for over a month and ordered the AC Delco part from RockAuto. Your video was the first one that I watched and it convinced me to go down this path to try to fix the error. It's been hit and miss weather with intermittent snow and showers too so everything sort of had to line up but today was the day. There's actually a GM service bulletin PI0639a saying not to replace the steering position sensor but to clean the plugs at the connection and then use foam wedge tape inside of the switch to take away excess movement - I tried something similar and it even seemed to help. I backed my '11 Sierra up about 10ft before the error chimed when before it seemed to chime in within a couple of feet of moving. So I sucked it up and started taking things apart to replace the sensor. I found for the 4 x 15mm nuts that a long 3/8" extension with a 5/8" sparkplug socket worked great to get them off. The bottom two 15mm nuts used a swivel to help with the angles too. I don't know if you had this happen but right where the column bolt comes off there's a small steel box right under it with sharp edges and hard to reach into. I accidentally dropped the bolt in there but thankfully had a small magnet to help me fish the bolt out. As far as taping the wheel goes I used painters tape, duct tape and hockey tape. I was afraid I'd accidentally grab the wheel to help me adjust my position so I made sure it wasn't going to move. So finally after getting it all together and attaching the negative battery terminal I gave it a try. And NO MORE ERROR! The feeling was pure satisfaction! Thanks again!!!

    Thank you very much for this video! Well done! I also have a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L. Had the Stabiltrak lights along with ABS lights going on. Truck would not go into gear when it was cold either. Ended up being a combination of the Steer Wheel position sensor as well as the Brake Pedal switch. Once I replaced both, no more lights. Thanks again! (PS., I did not completely remove the steering column as in this video. I took out the 4 bolts as was described in the video and then just lowered the column so I could get to the Torx screws. I left the transmission selector in place.

    Thanks for putting this video together! I followed your instructions, and it worked perfectly to resolve my stabilitrak issue. Thanks again for taking the time to show how it’s done.

    Thank you so much for this. I just did the job on my 2009 Sierra Duramax and it worked perfectly. Saved a ton of money I'm sure and I appreciate your time in putting together your video.

      You're welcome. Glad it worked out for you brother. You definitely saved a good chunk of money by doing it yourself. Labor cost is expensive at any automotive mechanic shop.

    Good video! Another video showed that you can keep the column in the truck by putting a ratchet strap over the cab and holding the column in place so you don't have to disconnect the column and pull it all out. My position sensor is doing really odd things in that the error is only coming up when the ambient air temperature reaches a certain level. When it's below around 65 degrees in the cabin, the error code doesn't come up. Over that and the service stabilitrak comes on when I turn the wheel. Time to order a new sensor and replace!

    My hat is off to mechanics and any DIY person that does this work, you really have to be some type of a contortionist to get to some of these hard to reach spots. God help if your old and out of shape like me!

    You can do this without removing the steering column. Much simpler. There are several you tub videos on it.

      Mine was a little tough but it did finally come out though. Try pliers, just remember to pull straight back on it.

    Nice job bro but you really didnt need to take the column out of the truck its much simpler to do it with it still in the truck

    Hi ,can u tell me what code came up for that sensor

    • @robertsmythe5451
      @robertsmythe5451 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never got a code for it, but if you rock the steering wheel back and forth once you start it up, the stabilitrack light will come on. Just did it today following the advice on this video. Worked perfect.

    Why do you need to tape the steering wheel?

    • @patrickkillough8281
      @patrickkillough8281 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a coil of wires that go to the airbag if the wheel spins too far it will damage the wires.

    Has any one replaced this part with non oem censor and had issues afterwards? I’m about to replace mine but I went with a non oem censor from orileys ? I would hate to get this completed and have problems 🤦‍♂️💆‍♂️

      Buy a OEM one!! I Order one from summit racing and it was wrong!! Ordered one from eBay and it was junk!! It stated that the part was brand new! Well it wasn’t had scuff marks and it was in a already open package!! Save yourself time and headache spend the money on a quality OEM part!

      I'm not sure as to why or what caused it to fail. Every time I would turn the wheel after start up, it would give me a message to service traction control system and service stabilitrak system. I played around with it for a few weeks to narrow down the possible causes and since it was only when I turned the wheel the only possible component that could be causing it was the Steering Wheel Position Sensor.
