    as an owner of 3 Teslas, I think the infotainment is different enough that I won’t call it copycat. What do you call it when Mercedes and Audi both started to use big center screens controlled by scroll wheels after BMW introduced iDrive? And now BMW started to have two connected screens like Mercedes? Maybe copying among Germans is not copy.

    Great video. I would like to add a few very important advantages for NIO owners. What really make NIO special besides its quality is battery swapping technology. As long as NIO can handle it, that will provide a big advantage to consumers like the followings - No battery degradation problem like other EVs - You will always have a healthy battery. - You will have option to upgrade your battery and use the most up-to-date battery technology unlike other EV brands. - Cost of battery replacement for Tesla is $16K-$23K, just be ready to pay that money when you are out of your warranty. Most probably, battery replacement cost of Tesla will be more than your 8+ years old car value at that time. - Shorter battery charge time - No need to have your own parking garage and charger. Please do not ignore the fact that NIO still have the charging option.

      This would be the clincher for me to finally go to an EV, if they can both release in Aus and build battery swap infrastructure. Current Teslas will be worthless when battery tech changes plus the plethora of reported reliability issues and indifference bordering on arrogance toward customer complaints, not to mention Tesla styling now looks incredibly dated and old all puts me off the brand. I have a Tesla Powerwall so not anti the brand but not game to gamble on their cars. Also US vs Chinese build? Give me Chinese every day. US built cars are rubbish pure and simple.

      I think in the long term it may not be a good idea. Imagine a gas station. How many customers they can serve within an hour? Can a battery swap keep pace with demand? How many batteries they need to store? How fast can they charge? Lots of logistical problems and the answers can be very expensive. That could be why Tesla gave up the idea. Also even grocery stores may get into EV charging business by installing chargers around their parking lots. The idea being convenience of charging while you do something else. I think NIO plan could be a money losing proposition that may not be needed.

      @0505naya ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Jake00001 Tesla first used this technology in 2013 and folded it? The reason Tesla discontinued the battery replacement service was because of the high cost of investing in facilities at the battery swap and, above all, limited vehicles to apply the service. And at that time, 230,000 passenger electric vehicles were supplied around the world. That's one-tenth of a percentage compared to now. Also, at that time, it took about seven minutes, not 90 seconds, that Musk showed in the demonstration, and he was shunned by consumers because he had to pay $80 for each exchange. In addition, unlike Korea, China, and Europe, most middle-class citizens lived in houses, so they could charge themselves, so they would not have felt the need to do battery swaps. In fact, Musk invited 100 Model S owners to ask if anyone wanted to exchange them, but I also read an article that only four to five people raised their hands.

      Except the crazy thing is that NIO was founded in 2014, just 8 years ago. Tesla made the roadster for a little bit until Musk took over, finally got a factory in 2010, launched the Model S in 2012, and finally the Model 3 in 2017. Nio was founded in 2014, and by 2018 they launched the ES8, then ES6 in 2019, EC6 in 2020, ET7 in 2021, ES7 in 2022, and will soon launch the ET5 as well. The Chinese are moving fast into EVs.

    • @EdwinChenLoo

      Tesla had to learn how to manufacture cars. Nio contracted manufacturing to an established car manufacturer. The EV market is indeed new to both. Both are really about 10 years old so in terms of advantage we not talking decades. Tesla's factory in China has exposed all kinds of design tricks and EV parts to China. Tesla's advantage would be in its AI and self-driving technology. China can have good or bad quality products. It is just a matter of how much they care to spend but so far NIO has been top-notch quality-wise. NIO is also focused on the user experience, something Tesla doesn't care as much. It is going to be interesting to see if and how they pull themselves up. I think the Chinese government is very well interested in seeing them succeed globally.

Nio is just entering the European market and while they still have some room for improvement I am glad to hear you say the product is pretty good from a build quality standpoint. The BAAS (Battery as a service) is still in the early stages and remains to be seen if it can be successful outside of China. As per the original automotive dashboards that have not changed much between manufacturers until the advent of digital/touch screen based infotainment systems, the original concept of a rev counter, speedo, oil level and a few warning lights worked well. I suppose NIO felt the same way with the central touch screen. It just works. :)

    Thanks for your great review. In terms of the slow charging speed, there is a kind of theory in China that points out the extremely fast changing speed can cause the charging facilities to waste more energy which is even less environmentally friendly.😂😂 That’s why Nio puts less emphasis on the fast charging capability. But for sure, they shouldn’t take the right of choice away from the customers, as well as for the purchase method. Personally, I wouldn’t buy a car without CarPlay or Android Auto since I really need them. But I will keep an eye on this brand.😊

      NIO has hundreds of swap stations in China, so I think for them the DCFC is a secondary charging option. Either you do AC Level 2 charging at home, or you do battery swapping on road trips. If they manage to build up a network of swap stations in Europe it could be interesting. For instance if NIO puts in regular swap stations along the major autobahns in Germany, their cars would be the KING of high speed motorway driving. Imagine driving a NIO at its 200 kph top speed on derestricted autobahn segments and you don't have to worry about poor efficiency, because you can just pull off into a swap station and get a 90% charged 100 or even 150 kWh battery pack in as low as 5 minutes.

      @MultiYlin ปีที่แล้ว

      If you operate a factory in any country, you will have to pay for 2 price: kwh and KVA. fast charging means a shit load of KVA I mean really a shit load. To put in perspective of a single 180kW DC fast charging port means running 12+ CNC machine altogether and multiply that by 10 you got 120+ CNC machine... CNC machine in theory can run 18hr per day considering maintenance and part changing... so you got 100+ machine online all the time but for a electric station 120 on and 0 on can happen which leaves the grid and the power generation business very unhappy.
      Even China modern grid system is not up to the specs for handling these loads, that is why they are planning a thing called C-V2X. (and in some part of China which supplies electricity to Eastern China, they have to cap the supplies to the electric car charging everyday in peak hours in order to preserve the grid integrity) EU also have their own V2X things going but I dont know anything about it in the English speaking world since they are generally very very very slow with the electric stuff.

    I think battery swap is a great idea. Battery degradation (no matter how well you take care of charging, or how gently you drive) is inescapable on current battery technology (all chemical-based batteries). Swapping allows for a replacement on-demand. You don't have to do it every week, but if once every 2-3 months, swapping batteries keeps battery degradation as a low-level concern. If the battery you swapped is "less good" than you previously one, you can swap it again next week. In China, I understand the battery-swap is sold as a package when you buy the vehicle new, so it is fuss-free. If they go Solid-state next 1-2 years, that would be even more env-friendly and sustainable. Excited.

      As a westerner I didn`t particularly like the battery replacement concept when I first heard about it. That is until I experienced battery degradation first hand on my ebike. @@RevelsCat Not to mention you don't have to baby the battery (like keeping the battery charged between 30% to 80%) everyday. Just swap, get a battery that is pre-charged to 93% (Nio's default setting), and use it up. You don't even have to pay the $$$$$ to haul around the larger 100 kWh or the upcoming solid state batteries - can use the standard 75 kWh one as the daily driver, pay a small fee (current rate in China is $125 per month) at the swap station and rent the larger ones if you're traveling. And yes, swapping enables you to retain the car's value better when selling. The benefits of flexibility go way beyond the "5 min swap to save like 10 min over a supercharger" most people (mostly keyboard warriors) seem care to see.

      @@denes123s The ratio between cars on the road and batteries in the swapping stations might not be all that bad. They're costly cars, most people that can afford these will still have charge access at home or work.

      But it also requires a huge infrastructure. nio's exchange stations are actually barely enough in China, because there are exchange stations on every highway and in every city, and there will be very few in smaller cities. But NIO feels that this is not enough, so it has to cooperate with gas stations to build this thing.
      However, there is still a drawback of the exchange station, it takes about 4-6 minutes to change electricity, if there are many cars queuing up to change electricity at the same time, it will take a long time to wait, so the number of exchange stations determines whether the user experience is the ultimate.

But it’s all based on one fact that the chip from the car itself is too weak to provide enough services . But right now, e-cars are using much more powerful chips on themselves, like 8155. So the power of car chips isn’t a bottleneck anymore(won’t be good as newest high end phone chip, but still good enough)
    it also gives car manufacturers enough confidence to jump out from Apple’s control, since having control of important parts of its car is very important to a car company. So basically brand like Nio, Tesla and other new brands, they are half car company and half internet company or say phone company lol. And I suggest ppl should try out more on car brand’s own system, cuz I never bother finding CarPlay back after I had my et7.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will always be better than any car infotainment system because people want to use their smartphones, not a separate system in their car. If they have enough volume. Can start provide lifetime battery warranty. That will be a good start. Charging takes time n those stays in apartment will have charge station issue. So swap is a really good innovation... especially if its a long drive

    Tesla ui layout is literally ipad os rip-off, at what point we just say, it's just a logical way to design a ui for a screen? All companies copy all the time (bmw, Mercedes, google, apple, Honda, Audi, Samsung) but when it's a Chinese company it's mentioned 13x more

    As just an idea, the manufacturer can offer both price- wise options - One, purchasing the car without battery ( you get - lease the first battery pack from the charging station )and the second one with the battery installed ( where fleet business can have their own recharging stations or contracts with existing ones )

    I agree with Thomas that it would be great if batteries can be swapped in the future for better ones (more efficient, more powerful...), but I wonder if that would be possible. They are now researching batteries that are lighter and smaller but nevertheless are more efficient and have higher capacity. I would think that cars which are made today are developed to carry that particular weight and size of batteries, so changing the weight would change the handling of the car. Wouldn't you have to change everything else too, if suddenly the car weighs a lot less?

    thing is they don't need to build too much of those battery swap station. just build enough of them at the main areas especially highway areas and cities, and then they can have the best of both world. those in the rush can use the swap and those not in rush just use the normal charging. it's a great concept especially if you forgot to charge your battery or in a rush.

  • @Kellric7
    @Kellric7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think battery swap would be great to do when you feel your battery has degradation. At the moment I have a car I love a lot but because of battery degradation, I'm reluctant to keep it forever. If only I had that battery swap, I would be more serene to keep it for a very long time.
