Help please! I have a 2011 bmw 328i and the engine turns over for a second but doesn’t start, When using the breaker bar to turn the engine over The engine turns but with force so it’s not completely locked if that make sense. It just takes force to turn it. What could this mean?
I have a 2011 v6 Camaro. For the longest my car would do this but after 1-2 tries it would start. Today it’s not starting and only clicking. About to get a starter later today and see if it fixes it
@@motorcarnut I changed out the starter. It was 100% the problem. The spindle would come out of the casing (which is what the click noise was) but it wouldn’t spin. Hopefully the comment helps anyone else in the future that has a similar issue
My engine starts for a second and just stops, the crank gets stuck and and is doing the same as in the video when i turn the key in the ignition. When I try to turn the crank bolt it is locked and then I'm able to brake it free and turn the crank. What could be the issue? Is it possible that the starter gets stuck into the flywheel keeping the engine from turning?
When the engine starts does it make noise like the starter not releasing? And I wouldn't think the starter is the problem. Take off serpentine belt and try to start vehicle to rule out a seized pulley or accessory
@Motorcarnut I ended up getting two connectors swapped, one connector was connected to the igniter for the plugs. Maybe the engine was hydro locking? But now it starts up but it has other issues after I replaced the timing chain, sounds like I have slack in the passenger chain. That's a whole other issue, thank you for responding to me.
Good question, No, It doesn't matter because when you start a vehicle it's in park you don't put it in neutral, same applies here. Unless you have a manual transmission vehicle then it would have to be in neutral.
This just gave me a different outlook on my situation. I have a 2016 Kia optima that was apart of the recall but they never informed me of the recall when I brought the car. Said they never had my information but sent me warranty papers about the fuel pump in the car months later. Problem I have is, my engine locked up with oil in it and it still has oil in it, no leakage almost a year later. No clear indicator on why it locked up. Now I think my fuel pump went bad and I could get that fixed by Kia but my engine will still be locked up. I need some suggestions on where to start to get a real diagnosis for the whole car and not just the engine is locked up.
@@motorcarnut they won’t. I never received the paperwork before the due date and they never informed me of the recall so I’m on my own with trying to figure it.
@@motorcarnut the only thing they sent me was a warranty for the fuel pump and seatbelts. When I called to tell them, they said I called too late and it was nothing they can do. But my engine has internal recalls that I had no clue about. No lawyers want to take the case so I’m stuck
@@Queenpoohmom I have a 2013 Kia, it doesn’t matter how long it been or if you just brought that car a week ago, Kia is supposed too cover that recall no matter what. Long as you have proof of all oil changes that was done too it so they can see that the car was maintained they will fix the engine for you
Best way is to get a socket wrench on the crankshaft center bolt and try turning it clockwise should turn over with medium force because of compression if not its seized. Also can be starter if it does turn over like I just said.
Mines make the same sound but i got oil in mines, i was driving when mines cut off but normally when that happens i would wiggle the cables that's connected to the battery an it would crank but this last time it wouldn't? What yo think? I was told its a 60% chance it can be a starter solenoid
@@motorcarnut awsome ill look into those things, also into noticed today that the Power Steering is also gone/not responsive, could that also be a sign one of those things you mentioned is the problem
My son was driving his 07 Infiniti m35x and said it died and he lost power steering etc. Couldn't get it to restart. Has P0340 active and P0335 and P0345 pending. When I hit the start button it does just like what you illustrate here. Starter engages and just everything electrical draws down hard and it does not crank. Ratchet on the crank and I cannot make it budge even a mm. I tried it with jumper cables on the battery and no different, starter was replaced a couple months ago. I think I am screwed 😭
Hey my crank shift rotates & the oil isn’t milky.. My 2015 Dodge Challenger shut off after driving through a large deceiving puddle. I had some water in the lower intake manifold… I’ve siphoned the majority out.. & replaced filters. battery good… & when I try to start it makes the same one click… the only difference is the click in the video is a bit more louder/aggressive… What are the chances of it being my starter? #Startermechanic
Well you could just check the starter like a mentioned or it could be hydro locked ( engine seized). Try turning the crankshaft by hand with a breaker bar
@@motorcarnut Found the problem, the most obvious stupid thing. Positive battery clamp to wire connection... It was loosing less than a volt so not enoughf juice to the starter... I was running in circles, changing relays, bangin on a freshly installed new starter, charging a new battery...
@@motorcarnut well I might be screwed. Mine won’t spin at all and I just keep getting the click. But I have oil in the car. I’m still Going to try removing the serpentine belt today
@drewski6015 you have to put a wrench on the center crankshaft bolt with a long handle and a piece of pipe and take off serpentine belt first then try tuning it clockwise and see it if turns.
I have an infinity qx60 had this problem. Dealer said engine was locked up. I can turn it so I tried to crank and realized the starter was smoking. We changed the starter and now it turns over with ignition but won’t crank.
Kia engine GDi is seized locked. but when I take my spark plugs completely out the cranks just fine no knock or rattle and cranks about the same cranking speed. why is this?
can an engine seize if the car has sat in the driveway for 11 months and never started up ? i just put in a brand new battery, voltage is good 12.4+ , radio works, headlights etc , but there is no sound when trying to start, no clicking or that sound like in your video car won't start or try to turn over
What you can do to see if it’s seized or maybe the starter or something is to try a put a wrench on the crankshaft bolt and see it the engine turns clockwise with not much effort if it does then it could be the starter or wiring to it.
My dodge avenger 2012 was making a screeching noise when the entwine stared now it won’t start as if the battery is dead i tried to get it jumped but it didn’t work whay could be wrong?
Thanks for the video. Is there any other reason the crankshaft wouldn’t turn? Say if the belt is still on, there could be a bad accessory locking the belt in place (such as power steering pump)
I am really hoping my car’s engine is not seized but I wanted to be sure, I just got it. An 06 Camry. It has oil in it. New battery. New starter. Alternator tested good. Good fuses, good grounds
2019 dodge challenger. I just drove through a foot of water and my car stopped. The water came up to the bottom of the door seal and didn’t sit in any water more than two minutes. But I’m getting that pop sound when I turn my key over. What do I do? All electrical parts are working.
I have a 2015 dodge charger and it was leaking oil but i continued to drive it and then it started ticking and the car stopped while i was driving. It still turns on but won’t start and won’t allow me to change gears. Could this mean the engine is locked up?
So, we needed to get an oil change. We changed the oil, and then started to hear clicking. We got a new battery as well and started to see my battery drain. We took it for a small drive in the neighborhood and it stopped. The lights were dim, the battery had less power and now we hear clicking. Is our engine seized, or can we rebuild the engine? Or do we need to replace the starter? We have parts to rebuild the engine-if need to. We have a 2010 Saturn Outlook XE.
Sounds like a bad alternator, did you have that checked? You can check if the engine is seized by putting a breaker bar as shown in the video and crank it clockwise with your hand. If it moves with some resistance it’s not seized.
My car turned off while driving what can be the problem ,2017 Sonata Hondai PLEASE 🙏🏼🙏🏼 HELP 🙏🏼🙏🏼 you can only hear a clicking noise like in the fuse box ??
my car just stopped yesterday in the middle of driving , we checked my hood and my oil cap was missing and no oil. we refilled it with oil, but it’s still not starting. is it seized or what can i do ?
If the engine turns normal then no need to take off belt however if it doesn’t turn normal then yes take off belt to make sure it’s not a pulley or accessory that’s seized. And yes most engines turn clockwise
I have a 2011 GMC Acadia shuts off while I was driving find out no oil though it was the battery change battery still not working do u think I lock my motor or is it the oil pump or starter my trunk won't open
This is not an entirely true Dx. In most cases, you are correct. But it is possible for a starter to seize up too. If the starter is seized, then the flywheel will be "stuck" in position. When the flywheel is stuck in position, then the engine will not turn when you take your ratchet to the crank to turn it. You might think the engine is seized, but the reality is that the starter is seized instead. Its best to just remove the starter and then try turning the crank. If the engines turns, then the motor is good and the starter is the culprit. If the crank is still seized, then its the motor and not the starter.
It can, but so rare that it would happen, ever more rare that you won't be able to turn it over by hand with a breaker bar, it just doesn't. But in those extremely rare situations thank you for this extra info!
Hey, thanks so much, I was able to diagnose the problem with my sister's car! I'm just so glad I found your video, I did subscribe! Because I'll be watching, I have a large family. i have a 1985 Chrysler Lebaron 2.2L that's been in storage for many years, i want to turn the crankshaft by hand..would i also turn it clockwise? on this car i would be pulling the breaker bar towards the front of the car to turn it clockwise
I just rebuilded a 99-07 4.8l gm engine and the engine seems to be seized it turns but it is very very hard, freshly rebuild and even jumó starting the car doesn’t help
If you can, take out all the spark plugs so there’s no compression and try cranking it by hand with a wrench and see if you feel binding anywhere. It should turn with little effort and be consistently smooth throughout the revolution
Hey..can a scrape on the valve stem cause the engine to be seized? I have a D16 A engine. Recently i take off the head, clean and grind the face of the valves but on 2 of the stems had a Little dent on them close to the top. Those dent was cause by me,using a players. However I fitted back the engine but won’t get the engine to crank. The starter work fine before I did any work to the engine and the sound it’s making is like a bad starter
If the valve is sticking, it can cause interference and the piston can hit the valve, but try turning the crank by hand and see if it turns smoothly, if it doesn't then its hitting if it does then its probably the starter or bad ground.
My car stop. We pulled it home. The start was checked the star isn’t good And he said the motor was locked We charge the battery The vehicle started Didn’t try to drive it Put it in reverse, and in drive to see if it would change gears However, it did change gears We disconnect the battery and we have been waiting on the mechanic to come back and check again When my husband tried to turn the motor , like you suggested in the video, it does not turn Does it mean it’s locked or seized? If the starter is engaged, would that prevent it from turning With the vehicle had started that day if the motor was locked
What can be happening is the engine was probably partially seized and now it got worse. Even if the starter was engaged it would still be able to turn by hand. Mechanic is probably right I’m afraid.
Please where you? I have a 2012 Hyundai Accent, just registered in July 2023. There is enough engine oil in it, but it refuses to crack, roll or start now. The starter had been checked ok. I read something about crankshaft sensor could be one of the reasons for crankshaft lock. What is your position on this? I asked for your location, possibly you could help repair instead considering engine replacement.
Buddy has a MazdaSpeed3 2.3 4cyl got an engine with low mileage to swap in, spins counter clockwise but won’t spin clock wise, ever dealt with anything like it?
if i crank it counter clockwise ever just the smallest bit, it will then crank clockwise limitless, and will crank until i stop, but if i electrically crank it after it’ll crank and then does the click? what could this be
Ok the first thing you want to do is...check for engine oil, if there none, yank the engine. There is oil? Good. Get access to the starter, tap it lightly while someone tries to start. That's it!
@@motorcarnut Obviously, but you gotta start somewhere. I did that and I didnt have to check wiring, fuses, relays, faulty ECM's ect ect...I've built a few cars.
@@motorcarnut Also, impossible to tap my starter because it's underneath the intake. Luckily, I was able to reach the connector from behind to test it.
My brother had a 2013 genesis we put a new battery in it sometimes it turns real slow but then sometimes just clicks could it be an electrical issue or seized motor?
Because, that’s the easiest way. Some can’t rebuild an engine only take one out and put another in. If you can’t do it yourself then your stuck with engine replacement.
Saw one a guy selling me for 2000 wit abt 100k on it .stuck engine and I couldn't buy it because everyone saying wen that happens its new engine and people selling a engine for 4k . Crazy .. so wen I came across your vid I'm like wow .

@@motorcarnut no funds for that for now -- someone suggested to change the plugs and coils and get a compression test .. some even suggested its a major leak in the engine
So, I only had a regular socket wrench but I was able to turn it from the bottom. It took a little effort and strength but it turns. Also, I was able to hot wire the starter to the battery with a long jumper wire and it clicked once like before. I was having intermitted starting issues before a big rain storm came through Vegas. I was worried it locked up after driving through a flood. However, it started a few times after the flood for about an hour and ran like it did before the flood. Hello everyone, I honestly feel like I have a very stupid question. I have an old 1983 Datsun 280ZX that I am trying to get together. This vehicle has not been turned on for about 2 years at least. I need to check that the engine can turn and it is not stuck (not sure what to call it). I went to check if the engine would turn from the crank shift pulley but to I noticed that the bold is missing. Can this be replaced?
Yes, it’s called a crankshaft bolt. And you’re checking to see if the engine is seized. If you can get underneath the car try putting a crowbar on the flywheel and try to turn the engine clockwise from there.

Help please! I have a 2011 bmw 328i and the engine turns over for a second but doesn’t start, When using the breaker bar to turn the engine over The engine turns but with force so it’s not completely locked if that make sense. It just takes force to turn it. What could this mean?
Try taking sparkling water plugs out and then crank by hand to see if anything is binding.
Very informative video...subscribed !!!❤
Thanks for the sub! Much appreciated.
I have a 2011 v6 Camaro. For the longest my car would do this but after 1-2 tries it would start. Today it’s not starting and only clicking. About to get a starter later today and see if it fixes it
Let me know! Probably is if it turns by hand
@@motorcarnut I changed out the starter. It was 100% the problem. The spindle would come out of the casing (which is what the click noise was) but it wouldn’t spin. Hopefully the comment helps anyone else in the future that has a similar issue
Awesome! And thanks for the extra info!
@@motorcarnut OK, I'll take off the belts and let you know. Thanks for your reply.
Hard to help you further without seeing the vehicle
Do you first have to put the engine in neutral before attempting to turn the crank by hand? You didn't mention if you had to or not.
Good question, No, It doesn't matter because when you start a vehicle it's in park you don't put it in neutral, same applies here. Unless you have a manual transmission vehicle then it would have to be in neutral.
@@motorcarnut , thank you.
@michaeld.3779 no problem!
That engine is in a recall, I made a video on that engine. They should replace the engine for free. It has nothing to do with the fuel pump.
That’s terrible, sorry wish I could of helped
@@Queenpoohmom I have a 2013 Kia, it doesn’t matter how long it been or if you just brought that car a week ago, Kia is supposed too cover that recall no matter what. Long as you have proof of all oil changes that was done too it so they can see that the car was maintained they will fix the engine for you
Hey thanks for helping us non gear heads out with ur videos....I was wondering if u knew how I can figure out if my 2008 Nissan was seized
Wiggling wires is no good, have to take care of that bad connection first, that may be your problem right there
@@motorcarnut bet , becuz I literally put a brand new alternator, an a battery, an I bought the starter 2 years ago
Yep, can easily be a bad or loose wiring issue , make sure ground wires are tight as well.
@@motorcarnut I pray 🙏 only got 140,000 mile o it
So what does it mean when the engine starts and runs, but the belts aren't moving? Thank you in advance for any answers you may have
You probably have an accessory like ac compressor or alternator that is locked up.
@@motorcarnut awsome ill look into those things, also into noticed today that the Power Steering is also gone/not responsive, could that also be a sign one of those things you mentioned is the problem
Yes, its probably the power steering pump pulley if your vehicle isn’t electronic steering
@Motorcarnut yeah it's an 85 thunderbird so I don't imagine it being electric
@Spintechfilms no
Thank you 👍👍
Thank you too!
When you crank the pulley does the to see if the engine is seized do you have to have it up on a lift?
No, most vehicles you can do it from the top.
Unfortunately it does sound like it seized up.
Hello, can I check the crank without the serpentine belt or do I need to have it on?
Well you can, but if an accessory like alternator or ac compressor is seized it will be hard to tell which one.
If anything, cut the belt so you know if the crankshaft doesn’t turn you know it’s bad news.
@@motorcarnut vehicle cranked 👍🏼
@@mvc2177Good job. 👍
Hey my crank shift rotates & the oil isn’t milky..
My 2015 Dodge Challenger shut off after driving through a large deceiving puddle. I had some water in the lower intake manifold… I’ve siphoned the majority out.. & replaced filters. battery good… & when I try to start it makes the same one click… the only difference is the click in the video is a bit more louder/aggressive…
What are the chances of it being my starter?
#Startermechanic
Well you could just check the starter like a mentioned or it could be hydro locked ( engine seized). Try turning the crankshaft by hand with a breaker bar
@@motorcarnut it turns
I’m just getting one click
Then it’s probably the starter, check it like in the video
Thanx !
Ill check tomorrow morning... really hope its not the engine. Nonono.
Good luck!
@@motorcarnut Found the problem, the most obvious stupid thing. Positive battery clamp to wire connection... It was loosing less than a volt so not enoughf juice to the starter... I was running in circles, changing relays, bangin on a freshly installed new starter, charging a new battery...

Could you watch my 30 second short on my engine cranking & tell me what you think ? Wondering if I still have a chance or if I need a new engine
The engine is not seized but does sound like the timing jumped. Needs to be diagnosed further.
My ecoboost mustang just locked up from lack of oil, any ideas for how much it is to rebuild or fix?

Im having troubles finding the crankshift on a Nissan Altima 2008

Thank you for the sub! Very appreciated!
I was told it could still be the starter even if the crank shaft not spinning, because a starter pin could be stuck. Is that true?
Not really, even if it were, turning the engine by hand will spin the starter as well. You will know if it's seized, it will not turn at all.
@@motorcarnut well I might be screwed. Mine won’t spin at all and I just keep getting the click. But I have oil in the car. I’m still Going to try removing the serpentine belt today
@drewski6015 you have to put a wrench on the center crankshaft bolt with a long handle and a piece of pipe and take off serpentine belt first then try tuning it clockwise and see it if turns.
what if get around 5 easy turns than it stops turnin
g? is the motor siezed
??
No
I have an infinity qx60 had this problem. Dealer said engine was locked up. I can turn it so I tried to crank and realized the starter was smoking. We changed the starter and now it turns over with ignition but won’t crank.
Sounds like it is seized
Thank you for this important information. I have a Chevy LS3 engine . What’s the cost to rebuild it ? Thank you
Depends on who does it and what is damaged? Hard to give an estimate
Kia engine GDi is seized locked. but when I take my spark plugs completely out the cranks just fine no knock or rattle and cranks about the same cranking speed. why is this?
Then it’s not seized could be hydro locked
can an engine seize if the car has sat in the driveway for 11 months and never started up ?
i just put in a brand new battery, voltage is good 12.4+ , radio works, headlights etc , but there is no sound when trying to start, no clicking or that sound like in your video
car won't start or try to turn over
What you can do to see if it’s seized or maybe the starter or something is to try a put a wrench on the crankshaft bolt and see it the engine turns clockwise with not much effort if it does then it could be the starter or wiring to it.
Did you check the starter and ignition fuses and relays ?
No need, went straight to the crank based on the customer’s complaint.
My dodge avenger 2012 was making a screeching noise when the entwine stared now it won’t start as if the battery is dead i tried to get it jumped but it didn’t work whay could be wrong?
Make sure the engine is not seized, have a video on how to do that.
Nevermind, I just watched a Short of yours that explained this exact concept of an accessory and removing the belt
Great!
Yes, remove all belts to rule out a seized pully etc.
My car lights come on but when I try to start it it just clicks 2018 tucson
Did you follow the video?
2019 dodge challenger. I just drove through a foot of water and my car stopped. The water came up to the bottom of the door seal and didn’t sit in any water more than two minutes. But I’m getting that pop sound when I turn my key over. What do I do? All electrical parts are working.
Car can be hydro locked.
@@motorcarnut so I just took the air filter out and it was soaked. I also took the cylinders out and didn’t see any water. It wasn’t even damp
Anything could have happened. Bent rods even it cylinders are dry water did get into engine.
I have a 2015 dodge charger and it was leaking oil but i continued to drive it and then it started ticking and the car stopped while i was driving. It still turns on but won’t start and won’t allow me to change gears. Could this mean the engine is locked up?
Grab a breaker bar and put it on the crankshaft and try turning it by hand clockwise, if it turns it’s not locked.
My car turned off while driving what can be the problem ,2017 Sonata Hondai
PLEASE 🙏🏼🙏🏼 HELP 🙏🏼🙏🏼 you can only hear a clicking noise like in the fuse box ??
Those engines are known to seize because of manufacturing processes. I have other videos on how to get a free engine, check them out
See my issue is I have that same single click issue. However, immediately after the click the battery dies. What does that mean??
Bad ground?
my car just stopped yesterday in the middle of driving , we checked my hood and my oil cap was missing and no oil. we refilled it with oil, but it’s still not starting. is it seized or what can i do ?
Sounds like it is. Rebuilding or replacing engine
Hi sir,I saw òn this video that you didn't remove the serpentine belt is that optional? When rotate the engine it have to be clockwise right?
If the engine turns normal then no need to take off belt however if it doesn’t turn normal then yes take off belt to make sure it’s not a pulley or accessory that’s seized. And yes most engines turn clockwise
How much would you say it should cost for a new motor? I have a Kia soul 2013
You may qualify for a free engine.

I have a 2011 GMC Acadia shuts off while I was driving find out no oil though it was the battery change battery still not working do u think I lock my motor or is it the oil pump or starter my trunk won't open
If it shut off because of no oil that can mean it did seize, but I would have someone local confirm that.
@@motorcarnut thanks my thanks it's the oil pump how can I determine what's what engine light is blinking but won't crank
Have someone try to turn the crankshaft bolt with a breaker bar by hand clockwise, it should turn over if not its' locked and no good.
@@motorcarnut hey got someone to check it they said it's the computer in the car
If you had no oil in the car and it’s still fine, that’s great, but the computer is a different problem then.
Because I'll be watching, I have a large family. i have a 1985 Chrysler Lebaron 2.2L that's been in storage for many years, i want to turn the crankshaft by hand..would i
also turn it clockwise? on this car i would be pulling the breaker bar towards the front of the car to turn it clockwise
That is correct, clockwise
Can somebody tell me where the crankshaft is located on a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze LT
It shouldn't be the hard to find? The front bottom of engine with big pulley is connected to the crankshaft.
So if I do this manually will it affect the timing of the engine?
NO, but you have to turn the engine over usually clockwise but some do spin counter clockwise, you have to find out which way yours turns.
The start was checked the star isn’t good
And he said the motor was locked
We charge the battery
The vehicle started
Didn’t try to drive it
Put it in reverse, and in drive to see if it
would change gears
However, it did change gears
We disconnect the battery and we have been waiting on the mechanic to come back and check again
When my husband tried to turn the motor , like you suggested in the video, it does not turn
Does it mean it’s locked or seized?
If the starter is engaged, would that prevent it from turning
With the vehicle had started that day if the motor was locked
What can be happening is the engine was probably partially seized and now it got worse. Even if the starter was engaged it would still be able to turn by hand. Mechanic is probably right I’m afraid.
My starter motor struggles to function when the engine is hot..I still do not know why.Need your help.thanks.
Can be the starter is going, or you have a bad or loose ground? Usually when they get hot they show signs of failure.
Please where you? I have a 2012 Hyundai Accent, just registered in July 2023. There is enough engine oil in it, but it refuses to crack, roll or start now. The starter had been checked ok. Mine will sometimes turn over but it turns super duper slow whenever it does, I tried replacing the ground but not the positive yet
Try turning crank by hand if spark plugs are easy to remove take them out than turn engine by hand see if it’s binding anywhere
Ok the first thing you want to do is...check for engine oil, if there none, yank the engine. There is oil? Good. Get access to the starter, tap it lightly while someone tries to start. That's it!
Not really that cut and dry. Tapping the starter doesn’t mean anything, could be bad wiring or fuse etc.
@@motorcarnut Obviously, but you gotta start somewhere. I did that and I didnt have to check wiring, fuses, relays, faulty ECM's ect ect...I've built a few cars.

Could be partially seized or a valve hit the piston and now it's bent. Either way got to take it apart to see what happened.
@motorcarnut sounds like either way I need a new engine lol
I’m not sure so best to have it checked locally.
@@motorcarnut no funds for that for now -- someone suggested to change the plugs and coils and get a compression test .. some even suggested its a major leak in the engine

So, I only had a regular socket wrench but I was able to turn it from the bottom. It took a little effort and strength but it turns. Hello everyone,
I honestly feel like I have a very stupid question.
My 2008 jeep wrangler does that when I don't push my foot on the brakes
I think you’re talking about a manual transmission safety switch?
i wish they still made engines easy to work with like this...
They do just depends on the particular vehicle.
Had a bad VVT in my engine.
.i changed the VVT.
And now it won't start. I hope it's just a starter that I have 2. Change And not the engine.
The engine tries to start but it keeps Killing the battery so it doesn't start
If you can turn it by hand with a breaker bar, it’s not seized.
