After visiting Germany many times we have adopted their system of “bettdecke”. We use only a fitted sheet and individual twin duvets with washable covers. No top sheet. It’s a total game changer since we can kick the bedding around without disturbing the other person. As a bonus it takes about one minute to make the bed.
More than 60 years ago, growing up in New Zealand, in the days before fitted sheets existed (at least, down there), a women’s magazine had this handy hint, which has stood me in good stead ever since: if you tie a fat knot in each corner of the bottom sheet, it turns into a fitted sheet. Also, tie a knot in the two bottom corners of the top sheet: this turns the bottom into a fitted sheet, and will keep it tucked in nicely. This has worked brilliantly for decades!
I was taught those corners for the flat sheet in nursing school a hundred years ago. It known as "mitering" the corners and we were tested on it. I failed the first time🤣 Seeing you do those corners brought back memories 😅
My mom taught me hospital corners in 1957 when I learned how to make my own bed. I grew up in a military family and we always called it hospital corners...my aunt was an army nurse and that's what she called them, too....Maybe it was a military thing!😊
I learned hospital corners 100 years ago too…also the hosp. Corner will loosen up quicker than if you just bunch up the sheet and stick it in . Why? Because a patient’s bed is remade daily, where as at home I don’t want to go to that trouble so I use the bunched-up method and it will stay tucked till I chg the bed again.
@@annewhitlock8517 So did I. I don't think nurses are taught this any more. We also had to have the pillow openings facing away from the ward entrance, so people coming in didn't see pillow-cases gaping open
Yes… my mother taught me… 110 yrs ago! She referred to it as mitering the corner… and taught my brother & I to make our beds hen I was about 8 yrs old.
I was taught hospital corners as a kid because both of my parents were military. It really helped when I went to basic training, and I still love doing them. I taught my kids, as well. Happy to see you teaching it!
@@CleanThatUp I recommend finding a nice large fabric headboard and then source fabric in a color/pattern/texture you like and re-upholster it! (If you want to be extra, you can get it done custom or sew your own removable cover for easy cleaning😊)

I like the hospital corners folding on the side so I can easily kick my feet through. The U- shape tip for the fitting sheets is great, I like the roll method duvet hack. Thank you for teaching us how to clean properly. I wasn’t taught growing up.
I noticed the seam was on the opposite side in the next shot after the demonstration (which was different than all other demonstrations I've seen on hospital corners) with no explanation. The demonstration was on the wrong "side." A re-shoot was called for showing the proper way where the 45 degree angle is pulled from the side and not the bottom of the mattress.
I learned how to make the bed thirty-eight years ago, but thank you for the perfect demonstration for whomever don't know how to make the bed. Putting on a duvet cover is so brilliant, I always have problem doing that. Now I have rotator cuff tear in my right shoulder and it was so impossible for me to put on the duvet. So for your brilliant idea I can now put the duvet cover on. Thank you so much🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I always suggest a waterproof mattress cover! Some nights I sweat so heavily, I completely drench the sheets such that you can see the outline of my body. The waterproof mattress cover keeps my body sweat from making sus stains on the mattress. I do the same for my pillows as I often go to bed with wet hair. Thanks for the tips!
As an older person, I thought maybe this would show me how to avoid back strain when making my bed. I did not really learn anything new here than I already knew. However, Let me suggest some other ideas... When folding your freshly cleaned sheets, do so to make it easier to put them on the bed when they come up in rotation: fold your fitted sheet so it is INSIDE OUT. Fold into quarters: top to bottom first, then side to side. When you go to put it ON the bed, unfold it at the bottom until you have both bottom corners in the proper place Remember, you folded it INSIDE OUT so when you make the bed, you just flip each bottom corner down and it is right side up. Fold top sheet so outside is OUT: first fold top to bottom, then side to side (plus whatever additional folds you need to make it fit in the storage). When unfolding it, lay the FOLDED sheet at top on one side of bed, with LOOSE edges to outside and hanging down. Then just unfold ONTO the bed in place. None of this fussing with the full sheet unfolded trying to parachute it into place. Unfold flat sheet so the middle fold line of the quarter sheet is in midpoint of mattress. Then just flip it up and over to the other side and then one more unfolding flip bottom edge of sheet open to bottom of mattress.
Finally found simple instructions on how to fold the corners of a flat sheet. Your tip of putting the top sheet on correctly is important. If its a printed sheet put them down facing each other. Some folks put the printed top sheet facing up when they should face each other. Great video. Your happy positive delivery was so refreshing. 😊
Have heard about hospital corners all my life, but never have seen it done - until watching you do it. During college I was glad to simply have clean sheets. Your videos inspire me to do stuff around my house! (Yeah, I'm a Texas guy: raised on horseback - we had a maid as kids, so I never learned any of this stuff!)
After working for a bit as a hotel housekeeper, I prefer using a flat sheet as both the bottom and top sheet. I also go up a size. I have a queen bed and use king sheets. This gives me plenty of sheet on the side. Personally, I feel that the "proper" sheets for the size bed that you have are too narrow across to give proper coverage. I also go up a size on the comforter. Thanks for the video.
Lovely colors. You did great in making your bed. FYI when tucking your flat sheet under the mattress place your knuckles upwards so that they wouldn’t get scratched from the box spring or wire springs as in the hospital beds. Nursing 101 ❤

I have that same duvet cover set from anthropologie, but I have two matching pillow cases and the two-year-old shams, cost a fortune to get to canada, but is worth it as it literally takes my breath away
Thank you appreciate the duvet procedure. I’m looking to try and figure out how to make the bed easier that’s against the headboard and the left side wall Due to heater placement and me wanting a queen size bed.
I’m surprised you don’t have a headboard, but thanks for sharing these bed making instructions. I have don’t the hospital corners before but sometimes I forget how to do them and just give up. 😂
Thanks for the demo. For those of us who don't want our toes bent over because there isn't enough room for our feet, I have one suggestion: put a pool noodle at the foot of the bed, and place the sheets over it when making. One way to make sure you are placing the smooth, finished side of the top sheet next to the body is to place the sheet upside down when making the bed. Then when you fold over the top sheep, the finished side is face up. One thing I have done is take a warm throw, fold it in half, and place it at the foot of the bed with the opening at the top. That way you can slip your feet BETWEEN the layers and get warmth from both sides. My feet get very cold, even in Summer.
Keep working on the hospital corners... My grandpa (military) taught me hospital/military corners when I was about six, it was the only way I've ever made a bed. Of course, I got to skip that class in nursing school. 😁
I'm always looking for an easier way to make my queen size bed that's in a corner, lifting the mattress up over the footboard and rotating it is a Fool's game haha
Cannot be doing with decorative pillows; my eldest sister has them on every bed and when we go to stay with her, we never know what to do with them when we get into bed.
I like the ties on the inside of your bedding. Good idea. We don’t have that in the Uk.
Great job, love it!!
Useful. Can you show how to use the various bed making tools for people with bad hands?
Pretty good. There's diff ways to put flat sheets on but asong as it fits ur . Mattress" it's Good Enuff!!! 😍😍
Great video ... Enlightened
no such thing as easy bed making when you sleep on the top bunk 😅
Very true! Our daughter had a loft bed and that was CHALLENGING to make...
I hate making the top bunk! A sleeping bag is easier! LOL 😊
I totally agree

Cannot be doing with decorative pillows; my eldest sister has them on every bed and when we go to stay with her, we never know what to do with them when we get into bed. To be honest, we just end up chucking them on the floor just to get them out of the way.
I found your tips really helpful - thank you.
