Years of colonialism has led to this, Caribbean's and Africans can identify from Imperialist rule. It's sad because, people find bleaching as a solution, when in hindsight it is the problem. It's like staying you "won't" have any problems after bleaching. I've seen bleaching creams in markets ( btw I'm Ghanaian)
It's easy to comment on these platforms but we all know when someone is to choose between fair skin or dark skin . He or she is gonna choose the former especially boys👍🏽🔥

This is a set up. Whatever part of the world we are in we have media telling us that whatever trait we have is not good enough and that they have a product or procedure to make us more desirable. Dark people wanna lighter skin, Light people wanna be dark, the curly haired want straight and the straight haired want curls. It's horrible. We just 'll need to realize there isn't just one way to be beautiful and accept ourselves.

I can’t be in the sun more than 15 mins without getting a massive sunburn, I have to cover up and wear sunscreen EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Fair skin wrinkles more quickly, acne/imperfections are far more evident on fair skin, and rates of skin cancer are higher in those who have more fair/ sun burn prone skin. Good for buzzfeed for shedding light on this topic, all shades of skin are beautiful!

Good video! This obsession must stop. I get a lot of patients who wish to change their skin colour. The worst part is parents bring along their children asking for fairer skin. I have a question, unfortunately it going to take awhile for me to get there. So, I'm an African American woman, who's "mostly" consider neither light skin or dark skin in the black community. "Mostly" because sometime my skin is describe as "light to medium" toned by other black people. I had a female friend whose is Indian (we unfortunately lost contact). Once when we were having lunch, she commented that her mom told her that she was getting too dark and that she needed to bleach her skin. I was shocked and confused. Plus, this was the first time I heard of skin bleaching in Asian cultures (but, I knew about it in black cultures (of course), and Latina/Hispanic cultures). Along with other things, I was also confused about her thinking she was dark skin. I was way darker than her and I'm not consider dark skinned. I expressed that there is nothing wrong with her skin tone, and I pointed out that she was not dark skinned. She told me that in Indian culture she considered dark skin. (We talked about it some more, but my experience as a African American women was not helpful to her experience as an Indian woman.) So, my question is, what is the criteria for light skin (or "fair" as I read in many comments) and dark skin in Indian culture? In black culture, it was the paper brown bag test. :( In Latin and Hispanic cultures, it just having native DNA/roots (example: Mayans, Incas, Aztecs) and black DNA/roots (Afro-Latina which is associated with slavery) or having non-European facial features. But, what constitutes as dark skin and light skin in India? If this question makes you feel uncomfortable, please don't answer. I was just curious about Indian culture as I was about mine and Latina/Hispanic culture. P.S. To any black (Afro) readers of this comment, when I stated that I'm not considered light skin or dark skin in African American (or Black culture period), it's just for reference of my perspective and to give insight of my friend's skin tone. I don't think skin tone should matter in any culture!
Lolo Smith Girl stop writing a novel and watch this video again. In India having brown skin you are considered dark skin. Having pale skin, you are considered light skin. The video was clear on that. Miss America of Indian descent is a clear example of that. Colorism within African communities can not be compared to colorism within Indian communities, and you can also not compare that to colorism in Asian communities.
C Will if you consider my comment a novel, than I feel sorry for your academic future. Secondly, I watched the video. All 8 minutes and 3 seconds of it, and I understood it extremely well. But sweetie, 8 minutes and 3 seconds cannot fully explain centuries of India's colorism history. If nothing else, understand that. Pro tip: *first* fully read someone else comment, *then* understand said person's comment, and then *lastly,* _(only after the first two steps have been followed),_ and only if it is necessary, comment to said comment. I know that colorism is different in Asian cultures vs African American cultures. I stated that several times, so I don't need you to repeat something that I already acknowledge. I also stated that her experience was different from my experience so I could not fully help her when she was upset (all of this is in my comment; which you apparently find too long). What I wanted was a clearer understanding of what constitutes as dark skin in India. Because some of the women were not pale in the video, they were just a lighter shade of brown. There has to be a threshold between pale and dark and I wanted to know what it is in India. (In my "novel," I stated that it is the paper bag test). And I just wanted to understands India's threshold for pale and dark. As a black women, I think of pale skin it is mostly associated with white culture, so I was seeking a better understanding of Indian culture perspective of what pale mean. C Will, I was not rude and mean. I am only trying to learn about someone else's culture. (And as I did when I wanted to learn more about it in Latin and Hispanic culture). And if you have a problem with that, then you have a problem with that. And if you don't have the answer to my comment then move on because I truly was not asking you then. But stop making assumption and thinking you are clever. Because I am not interested in your ego. I only wanted to learn _more_ about someone else's culture. And I am trying to do so with consideration to the individuals in that culture. This conversation could be hard and uncomfortable for some people and I understand that. Nothing more, nothing less! C Will, have a good day!!!!
@lolo Smith In India any skin color not matching the skin tone of a "white" American or an European is considered dark, that's the reason even fairest of the fair are obsessed with it and unfortunately grooms in India want to seek the "fairest" bride for themselves. It's all because of the notion that people believe "fairskin" to be attractive and beautiful.

India is not the only country obsessed with fair skin. It's all over the world, Japan, China, Brazil, everywhere. Slavery has had a huge impact on the entire world. Everywhere in the world, people are treated fairer the lighter they are. People use skin lightening creams simply because they want a leg up.
@HausOfCortez The effects of slavery are felt throughout the entire world. Of course there are other factors though. Rihanna is lying, I can tell you that much. Light skin is a huge thing in the Caribbean. There is a bleaching epidemic there. Sure people will day things about your skin color no matter where you are and no matter what your complexion but for her to say that she was picked on is a stretch. Furthermore, Rihanna was never, ever very light skinned. She is the complexion she is now, due to excessive bleaching. Watch her past videos and interviews and you will see the huge difference in her skin color. Skin bleaching is a pandemic phenomenon. The only thing that can change the global perception of a person's worth being tied to their skin color is if we " emancipate ourselves from mental slavery.
HausOfCortez it is not a cultural thing at all. it stems from imperialism, and the mindset that white people are more attractive then we are that’s why light skin is held to a high regard in asian countries. the more caucasian you look, the more “beautiful” you are perceived to be by asians. that’s why you get bonus points for having brown hair instead of “black” and blue, green, or hazel eyes instead of brown. it has EVERYTHING to do with the western world and wanting to be like them lmao gtfo
HausOfCortez i don’t believe that rihanna part even a little bit. the black community, like literally every other colored community suffers from colorism. and it all stems from imperialism and slavery (in the case of the black community). let’s no dismiss what’s actually going on here
Nice video! In the UK dark skin is considered more attractive and we are constantly obsessed with getting tanned in the sun or using self tanning treatments! I personally think that men with brown skin are much more attractive than men with white skin. ☺️
Londonki_Lali one of my Brazilian friend says the same . She also wants brown skin like princess jasmine but she is white . I guess we humans are not happy what we got and always want things that we don't or can't have

Well it all because of one simple reason. People with high paying jobs don't have to go out in the sun much, thus they have fair skin. Because of this fair skin is usually associated with wealth and is valued more. Wealth means high status (in ancient times ruler, in modern times billionare) and people dream about it.
I 💚 my skin. It's dusky, and pretty uneven when I compare my arms to my torso, but I love it. If i could have any skin, i would have mine. You should be proud of your skin too. No one needs those insecure bastards to tell us what to look like. 💚
Great video. Very informative. My daughter asked me why people in India were so obsessed with fair skin. This video answered her question. I told her that all the colours are beautiful and we are blessed if we have healthy skin. This is the message we need to pass on to our children given that the whole idea of fair skin being the best is so deeply entrenched in our society.
I just don't think so that " India has a long way to go to end it's obsession with fair skin" because India doesn't even acknowledge this as a matter of concern. I'm dark skinned too and I just feel that this prejudice of dark skinned-light skinned has found its way to reasoning , i.e. , if you're unable to do something, it's because you're dark, or if u don't have anyone in your life it's probably because you have more melanin inside you than more of " good personality". I see fair people calling other dark skinned people names, unapologetically. They don't mind if u tell them that they are 'racist', they will admit it themselves blatantly. India is not even close to a struggle. It needs a personality makeover. India needs to know that dark people's skin don't have mud clogged inside their pores.
@Blacka Đøn no it's colorism. Someone can be both black and naturally pale as hell but treated differently because they are at the end of the day still a black person. Same goes for an Indian person.
Colorism and racism are two different things. If an Indian woman prefers a white skin, that doesn't means she hates her own people, it just mean she holds fair skin in higher esteem. In the past light skinned people were usually the better off people because those haven't had to work in hard menial jobs like working on fields - so culturally they were conditioned to 'like' light skin.
@@wesornaitit please explain how tf we are all black? What evidence is there? You somehow hold the answers to these questions that no one else does presumably
Well, it-s not like racism is well founded in something different than the color of the skin, at the end both colorism and racism are the same, unless you buy into the "there are different human races" thing
Its seen everywhere that people are obsessed with any feature that's exotic to that mainland. In india people are obsessed with fair skin while in west people are obsessed with tanned dusky skin. Natural features are embraced by very few people. 🙂 Time to crackdown these advertising agencies and brands which promotes insecurity among indians regarding their natural features. 😕
Rajeev Singh When Indians bleach, they literally want to be as pale as possible. When white people tan, they go for a slightly darker look (one that can typically be achieved naturally by going in the sun). They don’t try to be as dark as possible. I don’t think it’s that same thing.

Wait a min. 3:16 is not entirely true. Many superior Indian gods such as Shiva, Vishnu, Krishna, Kali maa are dark skinned and worshipped in India. The irony is even when we worship those gods, people are still racist to their own dark skinned friends and families.

they portray them as blue skins instead of dark brown skin to avoid feeling ashamed of their gods. at many instances, shiva even gets white skins in it's portraits.
"Fair", in the context of beauty, means equal and balanced which applies to all regardless of skin color, but here, Its other meaning implies having a skin color naturally worthy of blessed fair treatment while a darker colored skin is naturally deserving of unfair treatment. We ahould stop using the word "fair" to describe skin color.

India is a second largest population of world 1.3 crore. So there are lots of varieties of colour, you can say that rainbow. People who are living in slum area or backword, they are mostly black and people who comes from south they are mixed colour, and some dark brown, and some fairy skin due to their parent colour but people from North India, almost large number of people are fair face, white and some brown also, but if you see North East Indian then they look very white and very fair skin. So India have a variety colour of people, so we call rainbow but we don't judge and discriminate people on the basis of their colour and many people are white due to their parents white skin also. So you cannot say that India have only dark skin people, we have a varieties colour of people and Bollywood is a best example of Indians colour, where many actors and actress are fair skin and some have a brown skin.

My mum was also subjected to colorism in her childhood just because she was dark skinned. That shaken her self esteem greatly. So much that even now she can't see herself as a beautiful woman that she is. Trust me my mum looked like a model in her 20s. To my dad she's the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. I don't know why we treat dusky people like a piece of crap.
It's all pyschology man....the regular working class in America don't go on holidays and beaches whereas the privileged do...so catching a tan is an indicator of prosperity in your case whereas in our case it's the complete opposite...the privileged ones don't catch a tan...btw don't mistake the Indian obsession with fair as white skin obsession..it's basically skin with no tanning...
i hate the prejudice against dark skin and i’m not a very philosiphical or blindly religious as such but i must say the hindu mythology and pretty much every religion do not think of fair skin as the best. Me being a hindu i know quite a few stuff like krishna draupadi etc were described in the holy scriptures as dark skinned.. draupadi was described as one of the most beautiful women who was dark skinned... feel free to look it up
I'm mexican american with a light skinned mom and dark skinned dad. My skin color is just right in between light and dark skin. In the summertime, I tan so easily and in the wintertime my skin turns lighter. Darker skin people actually are blessed because the melanin in your skin protects your skin from the harsh sun rays that can damage your skin. So, that means that darker skin doesn't wrinkle that easily. Whereas, the lighter your skin color, the more wrinkles you will get if you don't protect your skin from the sun.
That's absolutely a true fact ! Melanin is a very important pigment for us.. and bcoz of different geography... humans evolved with their respective colour ! Western areas are cold and need more sunlight absorption hence they hv less melanin (as it reflects sunlight). While in tropical region like India we hv moderate temperature and hence all types of skin tone! And I don't think that this biological process has anything to do with an adjective called *"Beautiful"* !
Im mexican american too with a light skinned mom and a dark skinned dad and I got a medium skin tone I'm darker than my mom but lighter than my dad and I love my skin tone. I take pictures in the sun and it gives me a pretty glowy look. Their is nothing wrong with being dark or light just got to accept themselves
It seems like whatever your skin colour, someone is wanting you to change it. I'm white and very pale and have had multiple people recommending I get a tan so I can look glowing and healthy. I'm already healthy. I'm fine. I burn very easily in the sun, so I don't spend a long time in it, because I know I would be more susceptible to skin damage. Being healthy is the most important thing.
I'm a south indian born and brought up in North India actually north Indians are more obsessed with fair than south indians, my classmates some time call me Kali(black) and tease but south indians are so good they never commented on my skin tone

Now u guys r all just having a go at north indians, we’re meant to be tackling the issue of racism together not opposing parts of our own country and taking sides. l. Here in Australia, so many Malayali friends I have r absolutely obsessed with their skin tones, I quote from one of them, "Even if I die from bleaching my skin, I'll be happy that I died white" and no I'm not joking. Cause I grew up in Australia, I got pretty sunburnt and because of the I'm a lot darker than the rest of my family and friends in India (punjab), and none of them make fun of my skin tone. So just stop.
Sinking Donut i am an independent girl and i can do what ever i wana to do....makeup and fairness are too other things 😐 By the way am a make-up lover not i use makeup to hide any thing☺ U r a idot
Sinking Donut reality check: makeup doesn't necessarily make your skin lighter, it makes it glowing. But Tum logo Ko fair lovely k alawa to or kch pta hoga Ni. Btw they use foundation according to their own skin colour. So this "oh makeup kr k fair hui hogi" thing is so lame and stupid. I understand you tried to be funny and witty but you know what's more witty? 'making sense' try it.
I've seen Priyanka Chopra in movies growing up, and she was so fair. Imagine my surprise when she became popular in America, and I saw her on the cover of some magazine at the grocery store - she's not fair, she's pretty medium toned! I was legitimately shocked and angry because she herself did those Fair and Lovely ads.
As a dark skinned black woman, I 100% feel the pain of my indian sisters.

Beauty is not so important, your personality and Talent are the main things.Cause as the time will pass your beauty will faded away but ur talent will always stay with u

I hope people realize that this video focuses solely on the North Indian perspective, For thousands of years dark skin in the south was seen as beautiful and an indicator of fertility and women hood. It wasn't until the final conquering of the South by the Portuguese and Brits that the colonizer mindset to love white skin over their own was introduced and heavily reinforced. Even now however the skin lightening obsession is far more a northern problem then in the south where the sales of skin lightening cream for men and women are nowhere near as high as in the North. This has to do with the fact southerners weren't as exposed to Conquerors like the Mughals or Persians so they never had an inferiority complex like Northerners had toward light skin which was heavily reinforced during colonialism

Fairness is never a problem today in India except when they r searching for a spouse and that's the sad truth.....
some girls also look for height, it's called a preference, stupid liberandus.
i will never understand people who obsess over fairness and let down darker skin toned people. i love dusky and dark people, i find them sexy and so beautiful in such a unique way
They are conditioned that way due to the way they were raised, their social environment and the media. I know a girl that wears foundation and powder that is slightly lighter than her original skin tone because she wants to look 1 shade lighter. She's actually admitted this. Sad really.

Not everyone love but yes sadly it's true my aunt wants a "gori chitti pyari" meaning a pale lovely girl although my gf is brown basically and super dark. Vrysed hey India is diverse in India you have caste system that’s the reason there is diversity in skin color .In India those who have more of ancestral North Indian DNA in them are fair skinned same goes for south of India .Indian is not an race and the population is not homogeneous you would find pale ,light brown and dark brown skin colour here .

This above is a link to why indians are not racially classified in USA it’s because of their diversity in skin colour .
İroş İkboş indian is not an race and most of the people here don’t have indigenous origins .Some of us have more of aryan roots while some have Dravidian you would find Indians who look Mongolian also in north east .India is known to be the most diverse country . But saying indian is race is false cause like turkish indian is not an race .Indian is a nationality which has more than 400 ethnic groups .

Thank you Andre. We Indians really need this. India needs to change. By posting this kind of videos, you're reaching a large population. Thanks for breaking past the funny videos of BuzzFeed and highlighting some important issues. Love your fun videos as well!
(We talked about it some more, but my experience as a African American women was not helpful to her experience as an Indian woman.)
So, my question is, what is the criteria for light skin (or "fair" as I read in many comments) and dark skin in Indian culture?
In black culture, it was the paper brown bag test. :(
In Latin and Hispanic cultures, it just having native DNA/roots (example: Mayans, Incas, Aztecs) and black DNA/roots (Afro-Latina which is associated with slavery) or having non-European facial features.
@lolo Smith
In India any skin color not matching the skin tone of a "white" American or an European is considered dark, that's the reason even fairest of the fair are obsessed with it and unfortunately grooms in India want to seek the "fairest" bride for themselves.
It's all because of the notion that people believe "fairskin" to be attractive and beautiful.

India is not the only country obsessed with fair skin. It's all over the world, Japan, China, Brazil, everywhere. Slavery has had a huge impact on the entire world. Everywhere in the world, people are treated fairer the lighter they are. People use skin lightening creams simply because they want a leg up.
Agreed! It's a global thing.
And in Europe, people are obsessed eithwith tanning

It's not racism. It's called colourism.

Holy crap I said the same thing before your edit
This whole video was to make people understand why they are obsessed with it.

Darker skin people actually are blessed because the melanin in your skin protects your skin from the harsh sun rays that can damage your skin. So, that means that darker skin doesn't wrinkle that easily. Whereas, the lighter your skin color, the more wrinkles you will get if you don't protect your skin from the sun.
stop comparing them both. they're both beautiful colours
Corinna Villalobos Which is also why blacks are good for working in the fields.
South Indians are more educated

@Poornima Devi ha, it's because of tube light and YouCam app
Now u guys r all just having a go at north indians, we’re meant to be tackling the issue of racism together not opposing parts of our own country and taking sides. l. Here in Australia, so many Malayali friends I have r absolutely obsessed with their skin tones, I quote from one of them, "Even if I die from bleaching my skin, I'll be happy that I died white" and no I'm not joking. Cause I grew up in Australia, I got pretty sunburnt and because of the I'm a lot darker than the rest of my family and friends in India (punjab), and none of them make fun of my skin tone. So just stop.
I am fair naturally and i loooooveee dusky skin😍....
My sis have dusky skin and she look super cute 💖😍
Nisha loves makeup just by looking at your name i can understand why do you have a lighter skin xD
Sinking Donut i am an independent girl and i can do what ever i wana to do....makeup and fairness are too other things 😐
By the way am a make-up lover not i use makeup to hide any thing☺
U r a idot
What do you mean by "But I love dusky skin" do you you want dusky complexion? Could have used "and" instead of "but".
You don't have to mention that you're fair here cz no one cares
I've seen Priyanka Chopra in movies growing up, and she was so fair. Imagine my surprise when she became popular in America, and I saw her on the cover of some magazine at the grocery store - she's not fair, she's pretty medium toned! I was legitimately shocked and angry because she herself did those Fair and Lovely ads.
Im obsessed with Andre.... I have been watching buzz feed only coz of him... Love u Andreeeeeee..
