  • The PTO stopped working. Turns out to be a wiring problem. Here's a cheap fix.

Thanks for this video. After replacing my deck belt, I ran into a problem with my pto blowing fuses. Turns out, I stupidly didn’t use my belt guard to hold my pto clutch. Now to check for a broken wire!
I struggled trying to figure out what was supposed to hold the clutch housing in place because the belt guard doesn’t show any signs of wear. This video showed me what I had been suspecting. Hopefully I won’t have to resort to the wiring hack, but at least it is in my tool bag if I do need it.
Did I mention I can be a complete idiot at times?

Those wires should be held on to the hub with a permanent magnet like household deep fryer power cords to allow breakaway. Worst thing ever added to a simple lawnmower, converted mine to idler pulley. Now l have very smooth engagement

That bracket is one of the worst design defects in history, if you dont know that unit will spin, you're hosed. However, thanks for making this video, I'm following this for the ground connection, being that one has been torn off, and so far so good, ive got continuity, and I think its going to work, however, im going to use some epoxy i think, to keep the screw from backing itself out under vibration.

Informative... Heat shrink crimp connectors and heat shrink tubing is a must for vehicle and equipment repairs.... Good to see you up and running again... I have to diagnose my lt1050 tomorrow... Hoping its a wiring issue or gap clearance... Not looking forward to dropping $200 on a new clutch...

Just ordered mine of Amazon for 125$ got it a couple weeks ago works great , unless you want to drop 200$ , I just went the cheaper route considering the age of my mower , also replaced my carb this winter with 30$ Amazon carb it’s working great too

Thanks. Very informative! I am having the same issue on the same model. However, I have enough hot wire coming out of PTO to be able to splice to PTO cable where severed without having to remove PTO. It is the ground that broke off right at the PTO clutch. Would it still work if I re-connect the hot with a splice, and just connect the ground from main harness from battery to the mower frame? I could do this repair w/o removing the PTO clutch. However, I am thinking that this repair will not ground the actual clutch itself probably resulting in other issues.

Thanks for the comments and the question. I'm not sure if that kind of grounding will work or not. Maybe someone else can answer your question in the comments.

Did that work? I'd guess it probably will not.

Hello, I am again interested in what the fault could be if the given clutch does not disengage, but works all the time. The switch is new, ok 1 year.
Once when it was hot, it was bad to lock inside, but suddenly yesterday it spins all the time, doesn't lock.
It's as if the electromagnet closes but halfway..

I'm not sure. That problem is beyond my level of expertise. Maybe check so of the other Cub Cadet channels. Someone might have the answer you need.

Mine still has enough wire running from the PTO but missing the little female connector on the end is their a way to fix that or am I SOL and need to buy a new PTO

    • @countrylivingonashoestring5159
      @countrylivingonashoestring5159  ปีที่แล้ว

So, you have a wire end sticking out from the PTO? Can you just put a double female connector on it and then splice a new piece of wire onto that to make your connection?

My belt keeper on my 1050 does not go through the belt keeper bracket at all not even close. I guess mine uses a spring to hold it in place

Different year or slightly different model perhaps?

@@countrylivingonashoestring5159 so I went and I was able to flip the bracket and it fit like yours. Explains why my wire was frayed lol. You would think they'd notch it so it only goes one way!

This is a kind of repair I'd do to get it back and running until I could replace it. I wouldn't consider this a permanent repair as it's kind of janky having a screw go into a wire.

Agreed, but it's held up for me this whole mowing season. I know I'll have to replace the PTO clutch eventually.

1st it's a crankshaft not a driveshaft, and if you have a 2 foot long piece of rope about ⅜ in size remove sparkplug stuff about a foot of rope into the cylinder itself and then you can use a ratchet and socket to remove and reinstall the pto. No it will not get stuck in cylinder. It is a hack job but if it works it works.

I've read some people say to not use a rope if you have OHV because you could bend a rood. I have a Kohler engine, and instead got a ratching strap, the kind with a long piece of strap. And clamped it down onto the flywheel and then tied it off to the steering shaft. It would worked unscrewing, though not finished doing a repair so haven't tried screwing it back down. Though from research, that bolt should be 50ft/lbs.
