Great video. I have one question. What type ans size bolt is it the one you remove from the rack? Where you use an extension pipe. Mine fell off from my 01 toyota solara, I'm petty sure they are most the same engines.
One of the best instructional videos I've ever seen. Plenty of light, great camera positioning, and clear English communication. Very impressive! Two questions; 1) why was the bumper removed, and 2) HOW LONG SHOULD THIS JOB TAKE (on jackstands)?
Thanks for this excellent video! I'm a novice and currently working on installation on a '98 Camry. One recommendation thus far for the video is pointing out the easier alternative of using a ball joint separator to remove the tie rod ends from the spindles if they are really stuck in there. I pounded the crap out of one of the castle nuts before realizing I could just get this tool for less than $20 and do it in a couple of minutes.
Great suggestion. Here's another: If you won't need this tool very often, check with your nearby Auto Parts Store and see if they have a free loaner. One near me sells used tools like this with a 90-day free return.
+Doug Barker Thank you for the great reply. We love to empower our customers by showing you how-to perform your own auto repairs while installing our high quality auto parts. Have a great day! 1aauto.com
Thanks for the video, I was able to do this repair. A couple things, the rack came with both bushings, so I didn't have to do the bushing change shown in the video. One of the main bolts would come out, I had to cut it out with a grinder - looked cross-threaded. Also, I ended up taking it out and putting it back in four times to get it right. So, yes, you can do this, and save hundreds of dollars, but it ain't easy.
Thank you for an excellent video. One thing that I didn't see(pertaining, at least to a 1992 Lexus ES300) is the fact you have to loosen the clamp around the black baffle of the steering column(inside passenger compartment) and then pop out the center cap that is around the steering column shaft and loosen the 12mm bolt holding the splinned shaft, push the shaft into the steering column coupling and then you can easily slide the connector onto the rack spline shaft. If you don't do it, it's nearly impossible to separate the connecting point from column to rack.
Does anyone else like the background music of these 1A videos? Its like a combination between the Jason Bourne theme song and a porn. Makes me feel badass while I'm fighting rusty bolts on my 99 corolla.
The very best instructional video I've ever seen! I'm feeling pretty confident to tackle this thing on my own. I will let you know how it turns out... :)
Great Video! Good step by step instructions, I was able to replace rack and pinion assembly on my 2001 Lexus es300...it is practically identical, THANK YOU!
Hi I followed your video to a T on my Camry and everything went beautifully I appreciate the videos you guys make. I have a question though when I completely turn the wheel to left or right all the way the stops my Camry makes a squealing noise. there's a lot of misinformation on the internet and I'm kind of hoping you can clear this up what may be causing this noise! Is it a loose belt is my rack defective or is it a pump issue? Other than turning it to the complete left to right the rack is working beautifully!
Sounds like the belt for the power steering pump. To tension the belt you have to loosen the pivot and lockdown bolts on the pump, pry it away from the engine, and the re-tighten the lockdown bolt while you keep tension on the pump. You may also need to replace the belt, check it for cracks or wear.
I've run up against the two 19mm mounting bolts. I'm gonna have to get the car up higher so I can fit a 24 inch pipe on my socket wrench. Like he says, it can be done on jack stands. But a lift makes it 10 times easier.
Ive been a tech for over 12 years and toyota requires atf/dex3 not ps113 or standard power steering fluid with what looks like gm and or honda ps fluid. The rest of your video was on point and i want to say well done. But fluid types matter
Just did a 1996. The steering intermediate shaft does not collapse enough to remove it, i dropped the back 2 sub frame bolts to make enough room to remove that shaft and on the 96 you will need this room to remove the 2 rack 19mm bolts. The setup is not the same on a 96 with a 4 cylinder as what you are working on
