I plan to make my own spring pull T-hook tool
to release and later re-engage the springs.
pliers are nice, however, it would be easier to hold a cross piece and pull with
greater force with such a hook than you could with pliers. both tools would work, but the
      hook would be more convenient.

A small tip: You can pry open the clip that holds the emergency brake cable to make it easier to remove. On reinstallation, you can tap it a little to tighten it up. That what I did when I worked on my Camry Solara a couple of years ago.

  • @chevtruck1000

Well done. A quick shot of penetrating oil makes that plug much easier to work with and I like to hit the adjusting screw threads with graphite as it won't attract or hold dust while allowing the auto adjusters to do their thing. Also, if the drum doesn't want to come off there are threaded holes on the face that you can thread bolts into then using hand tools turn them in to push the drum off.

Thanks for this video, I was having some difficulty today getting the first side back together (and the exploded diagram in the Haynes manual wasn't very helpful). Turns out, whomever had worked on that side last put the return spring on in the wrong direction! (I don't know how they got it together that way, but they did!) Once I corrected that, the job wasn't too tough. Your close-up at 3:47 solved my problem...

More tips. Get a tube of synthetic brake grease. Lubricate the adjuster very lightly. Lubricate the points where the shoes rub on the backing plate. You can lubricate any point where anything rubs on anything else. Synthetic brake grease can replace anti-seize grease in almost every application except spark plugs. I use it on wheel nuts for example.
I bought small tube of synthetic brake grease for less than five dollars about three years ago and I still have half left after front and rear brake jobs on three different cars.
I just did my second Camry a few days ago. The Camry self-adjusters work. If they don't work, you did something incorrectly.

My FSM says to pull the hand brake up several times to adjust the brake mechanism. Also, I would suggest pulling the handbrake while the drum is off to make sure the adjuster is working properly. One side of my adjuster wasn't seated in the shoe fully and it wouldn't ratchet and adjust. I wish I would have seen this first. I will say also, I did this on my daughters 1987 Camry. It's exactly the same except there was a design change between her year and the year of this car. Her car had a step on the pin for the handbrake mechanism and only one horseshoe clip. The newer style like yours has no step and two horseshoe clips. Took us a bit to figure out how to convert.

These are super helpful videos. My thanks for posting them. However.... It would be even more helpful if after you show the entire procedure, you also showed tips and tricks to getting the frozen, stubborn and complex parts loose, reassembled, aligned and mated properly, if ya know what I mean?
For instance, in this brake video on an OLD Camry, what are the chances the drum will just pop off... Maybe, maybe not. But if you had shown in the "Tips" that the drum has a threaded hole specifically for screwing in a bolt which then pushes against the hub to literally push the frozen drum right off the hub, DIYers would be that much more intelligent and your videos would be even more useful. Just sayin'.

I swapped the R/R drum to the L/R side and still hear noise on the R/R side. I've also swapped the shoes on the R/R side to the L/R side and re adjusted, and still brake noise on the R/R! So there are no brake pads in the rear of a Camry? I have a 97 and just trying to figure out what parts to buy

+Fifi Fornow Thank you for watching. This set up is a drum and shoe combination. There was this type of a set up, or a rotor and pad set up based upon the manufacturer and available supplies at the assembly plant. 1aauto.com

Didn't mention release the handbrake first. If not release the handbrake, no way to take down the drum.

He just threw that wheel cover scratching it up. What a jerk! And it’s not a hub cap. Hub means center.

So I guess the back wheels don’t need break pads ? Because I bought some and went to a mechanic and had put on it but I left and I didn’t see him work on it. He got me ?

This video shows a vehicle with a rear brake set up of having drums and shoes. In this style set up, there are shoes instead of pads. Rear brakes that have a rotor would use pads. Hope this helps! +Ketchup Rod

Makes ya think twice about buying a car with pads vs. Shoes. Is it really necessary to buy the whole kit vs. Just the shoes?

you are supposed use spring pliers designed just for removing the springs from the drum assembly so springs don’t go flying.
