Core sets were a great place for new and returning players to start, provide a place for generic reprints not tied to a particular set/blocks mechanics, and keep some good old-fashioned traditional high-fantasy MtG aesthetic/identity to the game. I don't know why they stopped. My best guess is that there just wasn't room in the release schedule for all the random themed sets and IP crossovers they want to pitch/sell.
they sell poorly, except when they don't
I didn't understand until he put it in terms of dryers and stepmoms
And the chase cards are a new style. It's called a full art, borderless, transformer, shattered glass, fairy tell, invisible ink, neon ink, poster, wanted poster, super imaginary, not found in any pack, foil🤯
FABTSGFTIINIPWPSINFIAP for short
Don't forget box topper, dossier, etched, portrait, anime waifu, double art, flip, serialized, card.
Outside of some pretty major exceptions, I feel that the rarity influx has been good for singles pricing. Seeing more recent staples (largely with the exception of MH3) much cheaper if you're willing to just buy the basic art is great for a number of formats.
The problem is cards like Ocelot Pride, Throne, the Flip-Walkers. Mandatory Mythic Rares is NOT how sets should be designed.
i didn't know magic players used to wear corsets.
The 90s were a strange time.

Get your tissues and wallets out.
In the arms of the angel
Fly away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here
So tired of the straight line
And everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
The storm keeps on twisting
You keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack
It don't make no difference
Escaping one last time
It's easier to believe in this sweet madness
Oh, this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees
The second verse sums up all MTG players relationship with WOTC.

Foundations should bring back Draft boxes under 90$

Mark my word, this is the set that starts a new power level upward.
How to make power creep? make it unlimited
Cold take. Game has been headed this direction for the last 5 years
Idk what you’re talking about, the power creep has BEEN here. My group’s table went from fun & casual to meta & pseudo-CEDH
@@DeltaGolf791why? Which cards are pushing it over the top? I’ve got many decks that are quite competitive in a regular meta that aren’t pushed at all
@@DeltaGolf791 What fast mana did they print last 3 years?
The only way I see Foundations floundering is if Hasbro skimps on the marketing. If they are going to make an easy and affordable onboarding printed in perpetuity, then the people need to know about it. I'm talking a national campaign for 6 months at least. Standard World Championship on ESPN8 The Ocho.
That's a bold play cotton
Im just happy to see whats beyond the bookshelf
I've been playing since 4th edition. I love core sets, they're fun to draft and splash into other sets. They offer good reprints and help new players get into magic. They're mile markers and should have never gone away.
This is the end of the video which means we're only halfway through which means we're just getting started
Good. For us the last 4 out of 5 sold well, and those sales stayed consistent for their entire print run... except for D&D, which was technically a core set, the gas ran out for it after 5-6 months (the singles from it are still doing well, though).
Isn't this like the 4th time they quit them and return them....
I think it's a good idea. Will pick up a collector box when they go on preorder.
There should be 1 core set 4 expansion sets 3 "modern/commander" sets at year.
I remember buying out so many stores' last supplies of Fallen Empires way back when, but still years after it was published.
We all love those corsets!
So cool actually
Rudy!!!!!!
I really hope they do the planeswalker starter decks. People who are new always want something easy to learn you cannot throw everyone into the deep end of commander. Been in the industry too long
Insert Neon Ink cards in the play boxes, change it up each print run.
Good maybe standard will come back.
Its rutin tutin Rudytime!
Actually excited for this. Will buy a decent amount of the collector boxes when available. I love cracking packs, but different cards spiking throughout the 5 years with a lot of selling windows... sign me up.
Timmy hands wrote this
That math doesn't add up. The price of those boxes will stagnate at purchasing cost plus a small margin. Because with unlimited supply for several years, there's no need for sellers to ever panic hoard these boxes. They can wait for release, then buy in small quantities.
Plus, nobody says they can't make changes to the product. Different art styles, changing up the list slot, throwing in some interesting basic land cycles - there are so many possibilities. All they really need to do is design a really nice Limited environment that people won't mind coming back to occasionally.
Hi! really appreciate the recent content, new timmy here from Luxembourg. Into Collector box opportunity. Couldn't it be possible for them to put a few serialized big hit cards in that core set though, and then keep price a little more stable?
Maybe a list of cards outside of the set itself, not legal in standard just like The List or Special Guests, reprints with value, but different in each print run every number of months
I love that Rudy at this point is basically the only good idea provider for Wotc, make him the President already, stop stealing ideas from him😂you are awesome Rudy keep going💪
hi, I only get i few insides/ looks at core-Sets from Arena. Does the cards in the set are beeing the same as of the other core-sets ?? And doesn´t thoose unlimited prints doesn´t devalue these cards from former core-sets ?
Feels like type 1 and type 2
Chandra always needs more leg art. Maybe bigger jugs too. Sounds like we need core sets
What if they up the set size to 3times like 6-900cards set? Something like a mystery booster set.
Wow Rudy showed the side of the shelf and he is 370K subs !!
Core sets, I can't quit you.
This should be the groundwork of a new Foundations format. Some releases go into Standard some go into Foundations to keep a format for newer players that’s much more accessible
I was listening till I heard you say that WOTC should add lottery mechanics to the Play Boxes because it'll addict players to the packs. Not sure how you can say that with a straight face.
Aside from the obvious ethics of what you said though, including packs would probably replace slots that would have been taken up by a guaranteed set of cards (think of what deck-builder's toolkits did back in "the day" with including packs). The more random slots you add, the less real new-player "value" cards will likely appear (cards that players can use and will WANT to use, like counterspells and removal).
From what I heard. The starter and beginner sets will have msrp 29.99 and 59.99
Demand could tank and they cut the pront run after 3 years. You never know.
I like the idea of guest slots to provide additional uncertainty to the sealed products.
Having a million SKUs for product is bad, this seems like a great way to streamline it
Foundation set should be a 1,000+ cards set to give the long term set value.

Can’t wait to buy a play box in 5 years. See you then.
Cool.
but Rudy, we already have the list, do you want them to print the list 2? the list beyond? the list aftermath?
Depending on the contents of the core set, this could be superbad
It’s quite a step above core sets imo
Like my wife trying to decide where to go out to eat.
So easy, ask what "genre" of food she wants, it narrows it down
AND, crazy concept, you and your wife don't have to eat the same meal
Dang - what grade are those Zeldas at the back... I'm 43yrs old but when i grow up i wanna be like Rudy! 😅
The new core set is a throw away gateway product to get new players into the game. That being said, I agree that Wizards needs to be careful not to crash the market.
oh the surpriseeeesssss!!! xd
Foundations sound great. Won’t be power expensive cards but will be filled with hopeful good play set cards. Making good game pieces. If people want expensive , get collectors stuff and have game pieces be affordable for the game. It’s a win win imo of course.
Grand Prixs next please?
9:20 I'm literally coming back to MtG after playing Battle Spirits Saga since that game launched because Bandai did this to their first 3 sets, killed the market, burned stores that stopped supporting the game, killing local scenes causing players to sell out further plummeting card prices. Several stores I know lost $1000's, and one over $10,000. Seriously, 6 months into launch of the game and set 1 and 2 boxes were $20 and $25, when distributor costs were +/-$75. The game went into absolute freefall, and the only thing stabilizing the prices of the latest set is that there are no players left and sets are now printed to pre-order demand.
Apples to oranges. BSS was a trash game that had already failed once, no one asked for again, and had an audience that was entirely limited to cannibalizing Bandai’s other games. Bandai literally started the launch by trying to pay people to play the game, hoping that would draw in enough players to get the game off the ground. It was dead on arrival.
@@sergioperez2771 I'm torn on the game, though did win a few thousand $ the first year of their attempt at a competitive circuit, which honestly might be the only reason why I've stuck out so long lol.
The game engine / mechanics are quite good. They paid a former MtG lead dev to design the game, and that part is great. However, their card and set design itself is complete dog water. Since set one, there have been maybe two dozen cards in sets 2-4 combined that really "exist" in a game, especially with a single format/meta. No joke, 90% of the cards printed might as well go straight into the recycling bin.
The idea of draft and sealed formats were a completely foreign concept to the developers (no joke, like we literally talked to their representatives at events). I swear, you'd think they never heard of a card game before with some of the preconceptions they had.
Bandai is a company so completely out of touch with the TCG market, I swear it is a miracle their other games even survive. The only thing they have going for them is their IP recognition.
a new product? BUY IT ALL
Omg please make a regular video wearing a wotc polo and name tag and not even acknowledge. PURE GOLD.
I miss core sets so I’ll take it.
Spoooderman 9.8
The best thing about core sets is I can completely ignore them as they offer no value investing into. And sure maybe one day those Core collector boosters may go up, but hey Core 2021 is cheaper any other set collector boosters at the moment. Of course Serialized will make some difference but why wage bets when it's a more safe bet with MH3 and Fallout to etc
TACOS! 🌮
no capped fixed supply....i heard that. sol and eth?
isn't standard rotation 2 years (sometimes 3)? blinks confusingly.
Jumpstart was initially a limited print run and the price shot up even though people knew it would be print to demand for 2 years--Which was bad from the perspective of a product intended to get new players into MtG.
New players?
The magic the gathering player boss are a bunch of snobby tools that off put new players
They're always the condescending people in the card shops, and hate when the Pokemon/YGO players even come to play and win lol
I wonder why they’re printing core sets again when everyone at the locals just plays commander.
Knowing the play boosters are not going to have value, seems they should make them CHEAP as a product setup to be repeatedly purchased for draft. $40 would be ideal for group of folks each willing to throw in $5 and just want games.
Rudy, why is everything purple and blue?
But how much for a case of tacos?
FOLKS!!!
🌮 Tacos for the algorithm
I just dont get it why the old school mtg players dont play or try flesh and blood. Its a refreshment
Its a completely different game, the gameplay doesnt speak to everyone.
$50.00 core set boxes? im down... =)
So Rudy does insider trading?
Rudy doesn't do insider trading, he is insider trading.
Seems like a good opportunity to roll out a new Standard deck product. Commander decks or starter kits are not necessarily a good solution for all new players!
Potentially a ‘big box’ staple set you can walk in and buy for the next 5 years because there’s little interest.
Or
They’re going to copy Sorcery and add ‘curios’ as insanely rare chase cards.
They would never put those in regular boosters as long as they make collector boosters.
Can WOTC create a card that makes Farmstead playable? I went deep on Farmstead, and need to pass the bag to another sucker.
You can't be serious nothing will ever break that lol

Fallen Empires 2.0?
Who was screaming for core sets? I've come to think of the "Modern Horizons" and similar reprint sets as the core sets. Do we really need two sets of reprints a year?
Nice badge lol. Someone made it official but not quite Official official.
TACO SETS RETURN.....again....
so we buy them for 5 years, stack them up. Re sell them for 300% profit. noted.
M20 was a banger.
Soooo…we buying? 😂
Lets talk about new ideas that WoTc could do!
Oh long gone are the times when an introductory product like "Anthology" was 19.99 for the box set or Portal starter decks. But no, this is normal, things get more expensive and some 20 years later a box can well cost $150 because the company trained us to slowly accept these prices. We are all just addicted monkeys.
Foundation.. only available through Amazon from 2025 and beyond
The only reason stores can stock boxes is because they should gain value over time.. 5 years+ no gains... no store with a brain will stock this shit. Hasbro capitalized and maxes returns by direct thru amazon only..
FoLkS!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely agreed... Regardless of what you sell, there needs to be something special about it. Telling the public there is an unlimited supply for a long ass period of time is anything but special.
5 year print run sounds terrible maybe one per full rotation
14:01 I've played the stepsister game. I don't recommend it
But can you say a card has retained value when it didn't have value to begin with? Because I don't think anyone would be interested in my 10th edition Thundering Giants, or the 6 other boxes with commons and uncommons that not even little timmies would pay for.
Return to return to core sets? Truly a shocking turn of events. Who could have possibly foreseen this???
