Oh dang, I made a test purchase on one of my Etsy listings to get a better understanding of the buyer experience, and it actually helped me amend my receipt since there was something I ultimately decided to change on it. I was not intending to leave a review to boost my sales, but I hope they don't ban me over purchasing my own product since my purchase was only meant to be a test. Additionally, I had favorited my shop earlier in the day... but once I learned of their policy regarding shilling, I went ahead and unfavorited ASAP. I've definitely done the thing where I get the listing up and then refine it with better mock-up. I thought it was better to have something out there than not, but you've shared a really helpful perspective. Thanks for the tip!!
Hi Heather, thank you so much for all your incredible videos and your generous help! You've mentioned that, when you first start your Etsy store, you should share all about it on Social Media to drive traffic to your store. But then later, you mention that you should NOT share your store's name, because people can copycat your store. I'm a little confused! Should we share our store name and how to shop there... or not? You are awesome 🤩. You are proving some really important Information. Thank you for your videos. I have a new store 1 month old, 140 listings and 0 sales. However I want to thank you for pointing out that the word wifey cannot be used. I had a listing with the word wifey/hubby. I immediately corrected that listing after watching your video. Thanks again and keep up the awesome work. 👍🏽

I have been asked for patterns for my kippot. Some I just can't, because the fiber told me what it wanted to do; even in a basic pattern, fiber does what it will and the maker has to work with, and fix, the material. Almost impossible to explain what was done, but the outcome was wearable and sellable. I finally had to tell the requester to buy the kippah to figure out what I did. She has never sold a kippah, and I have not made another in that design. I do now sell patterns, but with the caution that the maker have some experience working in fine fibers, small stitches and have a load of patience. Strong hands help, too.
I'm super curious Heather, as I'm creating designs and growing my store, how do I keep a look out for copycats? Did you see your designs popping up in related items? How did you first notice another store was using your design?
Hello Heather, thank you for all that you share. ? What about my first Christmas or my first Easter or Merry Christmas I’ve looked up the trademarks on these and there are trademarks. I don’t understand how but still see it being used by everyone everywhere . Am I misunderstanding something?
I am so happy to hear those individuals who copied Heather's designs (intellectual property) were banned from Etsy. I can't imagine what could take days, months or years of hard work to come up with something you can call your own, only to have someone take it from you, not to mention what amounts to thief of revenue. To everyone out here, it is wonderful and exciting to see your company profit. It's a sign you are doing something right. However, competition will step in and you must compete to stay ahead, but to have someone or a company just take from you what is rightfully yours, is a whole different ball game. It seems quite clear, Heather is always planning and playing defense and making it a priority as part of here business strategy. Take heed to her words and actions.
Hey Heather! Love your videos, they have been super helpful. My question is, what if you use a trademarked word on a t-shirt design, but not as the entire design? For example, "Stay Golden" is trademarked but there are shirts that say "Stay Golden, Girl"
Tracking by IP is a really poor way to track that. Consumer side IPs can change monthly, weekly, or sometimes daily. Usually only businesses hold on to static IPs
Love your videos, I’m working my way through them, and so far they have been SUCH a great help to me! I have two questions. 1. With using phrases. So many tshirts on etsy have the same phrases with different styles, is it okay to use these same widely used phases as long as they aren’t identified as trademarked on TESS? 2. If I have a subscription to a specific website that provides designs to use as is, and are given with a license by them to use throughout an active subscription, do I need to check if it’s already being sold on Etsy? Or does etsy recognise it as a premade design we are both selling? I have had a new etsy store banned twice, and I had only used designs I had made myself and checked for trademarks. I am confident I didn’t do anything wrong, and they were reinstated - but I still don’t know what I did. They didn’t respond to any emails from me, and I got a generic email on both occasions after they were reinstated. It’s very frustrating because before the first ban I was getting several views a day and after there were only a couple a week!
Another reason to avoid trademarked/copyrighted items is you can have very upset customers. I used to work at a copy/print/ship shop and had customers come in all the time with Etsy printables that we could not print because of copyrights attached. Some sellers try to skirt around it by putting in a blurb that they are either making derivative works, are fan art works, or they are just charging for the time that was needed to create the files. Then flat out lie to the customer that a print shop can go ahead and produce what the customer wants because of it. I have had customers email or contact the seller before leaving. Trust me, these people were not happy that they had to come up with another plan on the fly for their kid's party.
^^^This comment is great! I agree, I've seen people sell prints that are copyright infringement and this just goes to show why people should be more weary of infringing certain trademarks.
If you do get banned not knowing that 1 of your designs is copyright or trademarked you could download a VPN or just call your internet provider to change your IP
Good tips, thank you.... Q: how do you advertise on sm without promoting store name (ie so you don't get copied) ...obv, in a tutorial for other etsy learners you wouldn't, bubt general social media ppl could still do the same if they see how many sales you have...
Hi, your videos are super inspirational. How do you know if an image is trademarked? For example if I use an image from a google search and edit and add to it in Canva, how would I know if that is a stock image that can just be used or if it trademarked?
I have had this happen, copying too... by China actually and saw my stuff in forever 21. Lol that was 7 years ago. I did this on a shoestring and creating my items from scraps of fabric- honestly. So it was 100% original. Etsy should tell new sellers a lot before starting.
@@itsheatherstudio Yes, I considered copyrighting my own things because of it. I literally had just some scraps and my own two hands and created a shop. I didn't copy anyone. Its insane how companies copy etsy sellers too. :/
There is an Etsy Shop called "StrawberryMuffinArt" based in the US, which sells Star Wars vector graphics and has over 20.000 sales. The shop has the trademark "Star Wars" in its listing titles and still isn't banned.
How boring that people copy other people's store ideas. Part of what I love about Etsy is that it provides me the opportunity to be creative and use my own ideas. I hate thieves. And I am not a person who uses the word 'Hate' lightly.
Hi Heather! First of all, love your videos! I know that when you were starting, you promoted your products in facebook groups. I was wondering what kind of facebook groups you posted at, because all the groups I find and I'm joining only have sellers promoting and no buyers, people don't engage with the posts promoting products/shops, so I don't see how that would help me have more views and sales... Thank you!
I join the specific niches I'm designing for, an example of this is if I'm designing for mom t-shirts I'd join a mom group on FB and ask the admin to post my shop. I would not be posting in groups for other sellers if that makes any sense. :)
I need help! Several of my listings were taken down but I'm not sure which ones and what I did wrong! I can't figure out how to contact a live person at etsy. I didn't get a detailed email just a message saying "items in my shop have been flagged and removed" 😢😢😢😢
Hi Heather great content btw, is there a way of showing how many products you have sold on Etsy analytics? It shows how many orders per month but sometimes its good to know if customers purchase multiple products on 1 order for instance, that total per month??
IP is an important issue for sellers to understand and having content copied isn't right either it happens but good to know that you're able to overcome those issues. I sell on Amazon currently there will be a time I expand to Etsy with print on demand shirts as I find that business interesting and look forward to creating designs.
Hello Heather. Thanks for all the good info you share. Apparently I haven't done near enough research into creating an Etsy acct. I just opened one a few days ago or so I thought. It seems I've had the account Suspended. Do people have to pay to post their pieces? I think I decided to opt out of paying or so I thought, as I thought the platform was like FB or IG where it's free to post. Apparently not?
Yes there is a fee for starting an Etsy store. Most of the time it's 20 cents per listing you post. I would suggest contacting Etsy to get your store back up. Most new accounts get closed for the first two weeks of opening and then reopened soon after. Usually this is due to the Etsy algorithm will randomly suspend new stores for no apparent reason(sometimes this is as simple as you're viewing your store and Etsy flags the store for no reason.) It should be brought up within two weeks at most.
I used to do black and the DTG printing really decreased my customer reviews over time because the white shows so faded. This is the reason I suggest always doing sample order as Gildan 18000 in black doesn't show as nice as other colors per design. :(
A big one I'm trying to figure out is, what if for example you are making an accessory for a Nintendo Switch. Can you have "nintendo switch" in the title? I looked on Quora and a lot of people on there are saying you can have "fits Nintendo Switch", but this has me wondering, can you use the Nintendo keyword as a tag?
Hi Heater! Inspiring content you have! Two questions: 1) how to you make your videos, is it a smartphone or a more pro camera? 2) in the part 1 you mentioned you didn't have sells until you commented on facebook. can you explain better where /what kind of comment you posted? thanks xxx
I have done this is the past for group t-shirts. It's per skus(easiest on Printful) but there's a way to do it with Printify that's more complicated(create a listing manually and enter in every sku). I plan to do a training on this because it's a lot of work but once running it's flawless haha!
Oh MAAANNN !! I wish I'd watched this before I uploaded my first products..I rushed in and didn't do all the SEO first etc and now Im starting to get views and no sales bc not all the info is in there yet...lol, i thought it would take weeks to get seen on etsy... oh well, glad I know now! Thanks for the tips :)))))
How many samples should we order and any suggestions as to which print colors on which tee colors? Just curious also...will etsy ban if a copywrited Word or phrase is used in the tag section?
Hi Heather, I’m about to open a new shop and from what I’ve read, people say that nearly every new shop gets shut down. I’ve seen people say this is because etsy needs to verify that the shop is ran by a real seller and not a bot. I guess my question is that’s totally different than getting strikes right lol? I’m basically prepared to get suspended as soon as I open my shop but is it easy to get it back??
Thank you Heather! These are all excellent points! I've been avoiding social media but I really need more traffic so bringing people in from outside seems like a no-brainer. I started pinning listings to Pinterest but without any strategy so that hasn't yielded much. Time to get on IG and Tiktok!
Hello, i posted a rick and morty painting i made on etsy, and i got demanded by Cartoon Network. I dont understand why it happens to me but everyone else has those type of paintings and nothing happens to them. The same thing happend with my spongebob painting. They keep getting taken down.
Hi Heather I subscribed to your channel coz I thought it might helped me learned better how to open shop on Etsy. Say that I have 10 items ready to upload on Etsy, will Etsy ban me if I list all the 10 items one go or in one day? Probably because it will mess up their algorithm thingy since whenever new listing posted it will be promoted by Etsy or something since it’s a new listing? hope it makes sense to you thanks!
Etsy won't ban for how many listings you upload per day. I've uploaded about 20 to 30 listings in one day and I was never banned. Usually if you're a new store(under 1 year old) this tends to trip the algorithm but that happens to just about anyone.
for anyone watching this video, the information she is providing applies to all platforms. Whether it’s e-commerce, social media or your own standalone website. You can be sued, which is far worse than just losing a store on Etsy or Amazon or Shopify. It is not worth it. Come up with your own original content.❤
Ohhh yea, you don't mess with the mouse. Ha, thanks for this! I'm two months in, just hit 10 sales a couple days ago and things are picking up! I'm glad I've been able to avoid all of these.
I’m conflicted. I want to sell my photography as a digital download for posters. But I notice that people can easily screenshot my photos for printing purposes. How does the photography sell if someone can screenshot it?
The quality wouldn't be the same when it comes down to printing. I'm selling my photography and there's a certain about of dpi that you need in order for it to print perfectly. It could still be stolen but that's the risk. You can try watermarking your photos too
Hi Heather! Thanks so much for your videos publishing relevant content. I run a etsy shop with 757 pod items in it right now. Only getting 1 sale per day average. Do you provide coaching? I would ecstatic to pay you!! Thanks for reading my comment. Have a wonderful week! 😊 Dan.
It sounds like this may be an issue with designs per product, oversaturated niche or oversaturated product type. Many reasons haha! Also many ways to fix or go around those and I'd love to help; however, I am working on pricing for consulting stores right now and a coaching program so I will reach out once I have those figured out here. :)
Thanks for the advise about NOT! sharing my Etsy store, however PLEASE! elaborate? How would I NOT! share my store, no permissions, not adding team member, .......?
somewhat suprised that Etsy doesnt approve any submission before listing it, obviously etsy and the like should be jointly resposible for trademark infringement
They cant be unless they are a registered name of something or a word you invented. You cant trade mark a common word, only the image of the word, otherwise the world would grind to a halt and nobody would be able to speak or write without paying a fee.
the only thing on Tess that is live and has approved classes is "wifey material" all others are either abandoned or expired. Howcome "wifey" is prosecuted if the trademark is "wifey material" ?
Is it possible to use social media for advertising your shop without showing your face? I really don't want to make the mistake of not using social media but I don't feel 100% comfortable with my face attached to the brand
Yes this is definitely possible! I felt the same way when I began but I know lots of people who do ShineOn videos and just do product reviews of wearing the items or opening a box. There's many ways of advertising items without your face! :)
OMG, having your whole store copied must have been so infuriating!! What is wrong with people?! 🤬 One question: how do you get customers on social media without sharing your shop to potential copycats? Or is that only a real concern once you’ve become profitable?
I know right haha!! I post on just niche social media that generally steers clear from other sellers. Example is: if you're on FB, join a teacher group and post a picture of your t-shirt your selling in the group. I would not post in like a POD group what you sell. Unfortunately, when your shop grows, it's an indicator of high success when people copy you. It's a blessing and a curse, but I can say the original items always seem to stay on top which is the silver lining.
This is where you have to know copy write and legality’s of how you do something you need to know your 75% rule you alter images by 75 like 80 be original loves we love you
What about Taylor Swift items, I see so many with her name - is it ok? Who is shrute farms? Are you talking about shi t t creek? When I look up the word realtor on uspto I see the word is trademarked but not for shirts, clothing. Did you get hit with a trademark infringement for using the word REALTOR on a shirt or in your titles and tags, because the only way it is trademarked is if its in ALL CAPs and has the "r" trademark symbol next to it. I don't think using the word by itself is trademarked. That's crazy there are thousands of shirts that say realtor on Etsy! I wonder why they only target 1 or 2 shops with infringement?
I just learned about the "draft mode" that your listing should be in before completing your listing. I had no idea. I couldn't figure out how to have Etsy wait while I completed my listing. Thank you so much.
What if you include the words "Inspired by' ?? I know if I paint my own version of starry night I can just say inspired by van gogh
Lol at 'you don't mess with the mouse', I agree!! Yay to 10 sales and good luck in your store.
You can try watermarking your photos too
How do you use social media to bring business to your shop without risking someone stealing your intellectual property?
Words and phrases should not be allowed to trademark or copyright
They cant be unless they are a registered name of something or a word you invented. You cant trade mark a common word, only the image of the word, otherwise the world would grind to a halt and nobody would be able to speak or write without paying a fee.
Does Pinterest count as social media?
WAIT UP- so If I sell example a rat hammock with stitch or harry potter or totoro fabric i will get banned? thats insane!
Does this mean I have to delete my very popular Fleetwood Mac print :(
So we can't use "Merry Christmas" ?
You are amazing thanks
Can you share tiktok ideas for POD?
the only thing on Tess that is live and has approved classes is "wifey material" all others are either abandoned or expired.
Also, I forgot to mention you can go to websites like Placeit for free mockup videos as a resource as well.
so don't put my etsy store address on my business cards??
Can you use a famous catch phrase but misspell some words?
OMG, having your whole store copied must have been so infuriating!! What is wrong with people?! 🤬
One question: how do you get customers on social media without sharing your shop to potential copycats? Or is that only a real concern once you’ve become profitable?
I know right haha!! I post on just niche social media that generally steers clear from other sellers. Example is: if you're on FB, join a teacher group and post a picture of your t-shirt your selling in the group. I would not post in like a POD group what you sell. Unfortunately, when your shop grows, it's an indicator of high success when people copy you. It's a blessing and a curse, but I can say the original items always seem to stay on top which is the silver lining.
@@itsheatherstudio makes sense! Thank you!
Etsy suspended my account even before I save a listing draft, without any notification msg. It’s just a draft!
Disney etc. actually has the right to confiscate your items and materials - and they have done it!
