@@stacyosborn4537 I mean copyright in general. Logos, movies (ie - quotes, graphics), books (again, quotes, imagery), etc. But mockup shops are guilty of this, too. I recently saw someone selling mockups using modified Printify mockups of B+C tees with different backgrounds. That's a huge no-no. But if people want to switch to digital and sell their designs, they can't sell designs that include stock art. For instance, you can't create a tee design with something you get off Creative Fabrica and then turn around and sell it as a digital file. I'm fairly certain that falls out of the license agreement and would be considered an infringement. Using the graphic on merchandise is part of the agreement. Reselling the design as your own is not.
Thanks for your insight Heather. Much appreciated. It's ashamed Etsy can't be more transparent with their management decisions. Sometimes I get the feeling it's managed by bots and not humans.
I wonder if people are saying that these items are "handmade" when in fact they are coming from large print shops and aren't handmade. I have a POD candle site and see other sellers who use the same POD candle company as I do and in their listings and on their candle labels, CONSTANTLY claim they are hand-poured, made with only essential oils, etc. which just isn't true. So basically false advertising/misleading the customer is the main issue. Just a thought..
I've read a ton of comments on different sites made by those affected by the issue and there are 3 factors to this: 1. It seems to be affecting people that stated they made the items themselves. (for example, someone did an image, sold a mug with that image using POD, listing was removed). 2. The mockups are indeed what is triggering this. Many youtubers say it's not the mockups but all listings / accounts removed were using mockups. 3. I tried making a new account and the link to the sellers policy, which was just updated in September, states that you are not allowed to use someone else's photos (or photos found on other sites), artistic renderings or stock photos. 4. I'm not quite sure about this one but I also think that all sellers were using POD sites. I curious since I wanted to start a print shop but do the printing myself. Theoretically even if I did the prints I cannot use any mockups either since it clearly states it must be my own pictures.
Thank you for posting this video! My account got suspended a few days ago and I didn't understand why because I thought I was following all the rules. I had a mix of listings including digital downloads as well as products using Printify and Printful. I bought various mock-ups on Etsy and also used PlaceIt for my mockups (including for my digital products). I did not use any brands or copyrighted images or text in my products. I was extremely careful of this - not saying it cannot be the reason but I think it very unlikely. It could be because my fiance purchased one of my products from me (that will have been flagged because we live together so have the same IP address). One other theory of mine is that I put in two different tax numbers. I am from the UK so I put in that one, as well as the one I currently need to use (I live abroad). Perhaps this caused confusion. My last theory is I uploaded a few AI images as well. I had edited them but perhaps that is the reason. I wish I had stuck with using my own artwork, which is how I started out. Anyway, Etsy responded to my appeal and stated that my "account does not qualify for reinstatement" and "We are unable to reconsider this decision and can no longer respond to further messages about your account status." I have a fair few reasons it could be so perhaps this is deserved, however I do feel it is unfair for them not to at least give the reason. I also think it is unfair I wasn't given a second chance, especially when I told them in the appeal that I will change everything and anything that needs changed. While I am lucky that I had a (fairly) new shop, I had also put a lot of work into it. I feel Etsy needs to at least let buyers know exactly the reasons as to why they got suspended or permanently deleted. Sorry for the novel, I am sharing this just in case it helps anyone (despite me not being given the reason for my shop being shutdown). Onwards and upwards.
This exact same thing happened to my store too and thank god it was new and I only had six sales. Etsy wrote the same thing to me and NO explanation as to why. I feel like the Bots are running Wild. I also was very careful about trademarks and such. So frustrating!! Now I’m working on setting up a Shopify site….what else can one do after putting in all that time and effort.
I have two shops, each with around 300 listings, about 75% of those listings use tshirt and sweatshirt mockups. So far I have not seen anything deactivated and have not been suspended (fingers crossed!) I really hope this has nothing to do with POD and mockups because I love the mockups I have purchased to use. And honestly, the print company I use does not have nice mockups for their products :( I don't want to be restricted to using those!

I agree, I theorize that it's a new bot sweep occuring that's not quite optimized and maybe we are seeing a trial run of it this past week. It's happened so many times now of seemingly random deactivations in shops- others aren't affected but some are- and that's my best guess on what is going on as of lately. Again, this is all my take and opinion on this but thought I'd weigh in in a video to calm the widespread confusion and assumptions that are not proven or made statements by Etsy, they are only interpretations of Etsy's vague policies. I could always be wrong and again, I am not Etsy nor a representative, but I've just seen these 'bot sweeps' so many times now on this platform and other platforms that I'm leaning to this reason of the recent mass deactivations since history tends to repeat itself.
My exact thoughts! A little pricey at first but it will make your designs stand out due to not looking like everyone else’s design on the same mockups!
I had a few listings deactivated and once I changed the mock-up they came back up right away. My mock-up was a model wearing a sweatshirt. I think there’s a bot trying to ban inappropriate things(of course my mock-up wasn’t inappropriate but the theory was the bot mistakenly flagged it), which is a separate issue. That’s at least what I was told on Reddit, but that’s probably all speculation as well. Their AI system is horrible. They really need to fix these issues. 😢
I sell digital clip art. When I post an item I do use a generic tshirt mockup to show how a clip art of mine may look on a tshirt. I assume in my case it should not be a problem given the product I am selling is not tshirts but simply image files?

I’m just starting so this is only an uninformed hunch but I’d be thinking 1) what is the goal? It seems like Etsy is attempting to do a sweep to eliminate mass produced items before the holidays 2) what tools do they have available to do this? They don’t have the staffing to do this with human eyes so they’re using image recognition of logos and repeated images across listings, from the assumption that sellers of mass produced items are using stock photos. It’s not whether the image is a mock-up rather than a real photo, it’s whether it looks identical to other images to image recognition tools 3) how to avoid appearing like a mass produced item to a bot? Try to make your image unique and test it in a reverse image search. Personally I’m learning how to make my own mockups from scratch using AI image generation and Affinity Photo. This is a lot of extra work but also I didn’t feel existing mockups were in the right aesthetic to fit the designs. If my items get suspended I’ll try to remember to comment again 😆
My shop got suspended for the fact my card did not let me charge - I fixed the card/put in the new one, and they still have not restored my shop. So weird.
I don’t think that is the issue. I also change my background for my POD images. Those are also stock photos. I think the important take is Etsy wants us to provide the proper representation of the item and not something close to it..people worry about slight color changes. It’s more about the product itself..I forgot to say. Etsy partnered with Adobe Express so no way the background change is an issue. Would make no sense.
Hello Heather, thanks for sharing this informative video. What are the exact steps to change the background of a Printify mockup? I tried downloading the images but it seems to be lesser quality (JPG).
@@absolutefreedom8035 I can change or remove any background. You did not read my question properly. I'm talking about the mockups that Prinify offer directly on their platform.
When you are designing the shirt in printify, go to the preview tab while editing. Down at the bottom, where they list the colors you've selected, there should be an option for a background. You can upload your own. Printify will add that background to all of the variations of that specific picture for you. For example, adding it to the white flatlay mockup will also add it to the other flat lays in every color you chose. Hope this helps!
I think the problem is with copyright in my case at least. I did a Mario pattern for my Son I used some Icons from Mario's world in Printify but I never uploaded to Etsy but Printify sent me an email saying I need to desactivate that listing or send the permit to use it. Hopefully my intention was not sell the product.
I had one fledgling shop permanently suspended (one product with Printify mockups) and all of my listings in my other shop (150+) deactivated and my account suspended. *NO* contact from Etsy at all. I used Printify mockups which I'd added backgrounds to and some purchased (from Etsy!) mockups. It's the lack of comment and contact from Etsy that's infuriating.
@@mkingscott It seriously is frustrating. People put many hundreds of hours into their shops before they ever see a return and it can all be taken away in an instant by some computer algorithm. Makes me so hesitant to spend any more time on my shop. I sure hope they get it sorted out for you and at the very least let you know why! It's also scary that they can punish you across multiple shops.
I got 2 listings deactivated a week ago Monday. Snowflake pattern poster and a candy cane poster pattern. Not copright. Peppermint or Peppermint candy. All I got was 2 emails. All canned all generic. Make sure it not happens again read our handbook etc Cannot even speak to a human no longer using email.
i opened my account lets say 5 days ago in day 6 i am suspended with no email , to explain , i tried opening a other account it was suspended without even posting any product on it
Alot of new shops are sometimes flagged and suspended within the first few weeks of opening. They are just inspecting your shop to make sure you are a real person. It should be back up soon.
Is Etsy refunding the deactivated listings? Since they can’t edit and repost. Guessing not. It’s pennys on the dollar, but adds up. They are so unprofessional. Even if they “cant” contact everyone individually, they should explain on their site, etc, in more detail, so people know what is going on.
Hi, do you have any idea if AI (artificial intelligence) generated designs are allowed on Etsy? Let´s say, if I have a paid suscription on a software like Midjourney, which gives me the commercial rights to every design I make with the software, is Etsy ok with it?
I asked 6 months ago at that time it was fine. It can change. But make it your own handmade design of course. Just do not put up and sell it. Upscale-fix resolution, clean up, add to it, etc

@@PODwithMorti Thank you so much, you are a star, and you will be rewarded for your selfless kindheartedness. 😀
Thank you for thos video, i finally was able to email Etsy via the "listing deactivated" clip 👍
Still no response from them, obvs 🙄
I think the problem is with copyright in my case at least. I did a Mario pattern for my Son I used some Icons from Mario's world in Printify but I never uploaded to Etsy but Printify sent me an email saying I need to desactivate that listing or send the permit to use it. Hopefully my intention was not sell the product.
Wow ! You just made way more sense than any other youtuber covering this.
Thank you for commenting on this It’s very calming !
I'm happy to hear this calmed some confusion for you and hopefully it will keep doing so for others! ❤
I just got suspended, I use place it mock-ups, I haven’t received any email yet? Why should I do😢? Thank you ☺️
I had one fledgling shop permanently suspended (one product with Printify mockups) and all of my listings in my other shop (150+) deactivated and my account suspended.
Thank you Heather ❤
I got 2 listings deactivated a week ago Monday. Snowflake pattern poster and a candy cane poster pattern. Not copright. Peppermint or Peppermint candy.
All I got was 2 emails. Could not reply back or appeal. Not handmade? I made them & used printify and their mockup.
Been listed for a month no problem. I changed keywords & title seo bam it was instant.
Spent an hour live chat. No appeal no speak to management. No help
Only us3 printify mockups I am stll new
Week later calmed down emailed yesterday just like you showed us in your video just now.
The second I sent the email, auto email response. No human. We will not reactivate here's our policies. All canned all generic. Make sure it not happens again read our handbook etc
Cannot even speak to a human no longer using email.
1. Do you usually list them as "made to order" or did you select it was made at a specific time?
2. Was it a digital product?
i opened my account lets say 5 days ago in day 6 i am suspended with no email , to explain , i tried opening a other account it was suspended without even posting any product on it
Alot of new shops are sometimes flagged and suspended within the first few weeks of opening. They are just inspecting your shop to make sure you are a real person. It should be back up soon.
Thank you so much for your answer, i am a bit more calm.
I see a lot of things people doing wrong on Etsy maybe they just cleaning house
I've been trying to get into one of agent introduced to me she no way to be found
I had my store deactivated bc they told me it was a security issue and had to prove my identity for some reason.
Do you have an LLC for your Etsy business and if so do you have your Etsy income and TH-cam income under one LLC and business name?
Is Etsy refunding the deactivated listings? Since they can’t edit and repost. Guessing not. It’s pennys on the dollar, but adds up. They are so unprofessional. Even if they “cant” contact everyone individually, they should explain on their site, etc, in more detail, so people know what is going on.
etsy suspended a lot of shop this week
this will affect more to bestsellers and mockup stores than regular sellers, for those who sell digital mockups they might lose their niche
When Etsy bans one shop for copyright they need to shut them all down!!!!!!! More platforms than just etsy
Hi, do you have any idea if AI (artificial intelligence) generated designs are allowed on Etsy? Let´s say, if I have a paid suscription on a software like Midjourney, which gives me the commercial rights to every design I make with the software, is Etsy ok with it?
That’s not the issue.
I asked 6 months ago at that time it was fine. It can change.
But make it your own handmade design of course. Just do not put up and sell it. Upscale-fix resolution, clean up, add to it, etc
@@angel2483 Hi, who did you ask? did you send an email or talked via Etsy chat?
That's better suited for Ebay or Amazon. Not Etsy.
How’s your new POD shop doing?
corporate greed.
About time Etsy got their act together, Etsy is so over saturated. About time they cleaned it out.
Etsy will forever be a DICTATORSHIP smh
Anyone else have no sound issues? Just classical music playing?
I am hearing a light background of music on my left headphone & Heather speaking coming through only on my right headphone. Very annoying.
As this is a serious matter, I appreciate the calmness of the jazz music!
Heather is in the left head phone. Right headphone is Jazz.
Same
Jazz in the left earbud, heather in the right
bla, bla, bla and bla, bla, bla🤔🤔🤔🤔🤑
