  • Initial walk around of our newly purchased $500 1980 Jeep CJ 5. We discuss what we looked for in a cheap CJ that couldn't be started before we purchased it. We also look at a couple odd modifications that were made to this jeep by a prior owner.
For more information on this project visit our website, www.taboocustoms.com and go to the projects section.
If you have further questions about this video, what to look for in an old CJ or Jeep questions in general, go to the Contact Us section of the website.
    Thanks for watching!

Update on this project. We are swamped with projects but its still high on the list. I have been able to find an essentially brand new original tub for it. The tub apparently was removed from a jeep and sat in storage for many many years. Our plan for the restore is a mod-stock restore, essentially close to my original jeep. We will be keeping the 258, doing a small lift, 33's at the most, stock axles, stock fenders. For mods I am debating doing the holley sniper FI kit on the 258 we have done a few of these and like the systems. I will probably do a painless harness and a few other things that shouldnt detract from making it look like a proper CJ5.

Not that bad of rig! Good start, I would replace the tub instead of more modification. I bought 73' 2yrs. Ago with a Chevy v8. The person I got it from replaced frame with a new frame. I added 3.5 lift 33's, 21 gallon fuel cell, tilt steering, paint is next. Love the look of the CJ5's they look like a Brute & Beefy! Cheers! 🍻

wow....you got lucky. so nice and clean! ...up here they want lots of money for parts cj5s. guy tried to sell me a 55 cj5 that was so rusted the tub was a goner and the frame most likely too. he wanted 800 firm, forget that. only the engine MAY have been savable ...sadly

Yeah we are still happy, I have a brand new tub to go on it when ever I'm able to get back to it.

Okay for a 'plow' jeep, but get you a nice 77 CJ7 to fix up if you want something to drive around in.

I actually have a 78 CJ7 and have owned probably a dozen over the last 25 years, the CJ7 is the yellow one in the corner in a lot of my videos. The deal with this is more sentimental. My first jeep was a 77 CJ5, it really started my love of Jeeps and I have always been disappointed that I sold it.

I’m looking at a ‘78 CJ7 that looks sharp in the pictures with a 304 and they said it runs great. Assuming all these things are true and all the things you mentioned check out why do you think it’s worth if it’s a base model? They are asking 8,000

Also how would I look up the ‘78 13 digit VIN? I’m trying to figure out all the specs and exact model and trim. I’m new to the Jeep world in case it’s not obvious lol

Man. I could use a 5 minute conversation with you. Working on my dad's 79 cj7 and have tons of questions. I don't suppose I could chat with you for a few?
