looks just like the one I grew up in. parked it with my brother in law for restoration one of these days. brings back some great memories, thanks for the video.
My father had this same jeep he bought it brand new this is the only other one I have ever seen like it wish I knew where his was today keep her original amazing
Thanks! The plan is to stay original except for safety and reliability. I really like the look with these wheels and tires; I don't want to lift it and put big tires on it. Honestly, we won the war in Europe with jeeps that had a very similar set up, and that's good enough for me.
New subscriber! Have been a long time fan of the CJ/Wranglers & love watching restoration videos on old jeeps. Been driving an ‘06 Wrangler for 13 years. Just got it back from the body shop because I had a rusty fender replaced. Enjoyed your video and am looking forward to seeing how this CJ comes along. Thanks for posting!
I had a '78 CJ-7 that I had to do so much of what you've done on yours. That was back in the late 90s. Had it for several years and it gave me good service. Mine needed a lot of cosmetic work, new paint, interior, plus 304 engine rebuild, brakes, and so on. The list was long. But, I enjoyed it and it was a pretty sweet ride in the end. I noticed your Jeep is in so much better condition than mine was; you scored a win on your purchase.
I've got to get back to my jeeps. I've got an '81 CJ5 that's been sitting in my garage for about 12 years. Parked next to it is an '81 Scrambler that's been sitting in the garage for about 14 years and parked outside in the weather is a 91 YJ wrangler. I want to get to CJ5 going first and then slowly work my way into the others. Problem is that every time I start thinking about working on it, it seems like one of my daily driver vehicles craps out and I'm spending my vehicle tinkering time on that! Love the videos!
What a great find! I always preferred the looks of the CJ5 over the CJ7. I had a YJ (with the much maligned square headlights) back in the late 80's, early 90's. It was a fun vehicle, but there always seemed to be something failing in it. I traded it for a Toyota 4x4 pickup and never looked back. If I had this one though, I'd keep it.
I have a 1977 Jeep CJ5 same as yours, even to the color. Present mileage is 47000 miles. Runs great. Keep it in my garage since I bought it. I do most of the repair and maintenance on myself. Drive it once a week at least to keep the parts lubricated. Great machine.
Don't worry about the video being too long. In my opinion this was very good. I enjoyed watching and subscribed. Looking forward to more content. Thank you!
Nice CJ5, I had a brand new 1979 CJ5 with 304 cid V8 back in the day and on Nov. 22,1981 I hit some black ice on the freeway and lost control and barrel rolled it at 75 mph. I survived with minor injuries, I did drive the Jeep after because it landed on it's wheels, but it was totaled. It was a fun vehicle and I never got stuck in the mud, it had Firestone Town & Country H78 15 Mud and snows on it. Great vehicle just not meant for the freeway or "J" turns.
I have a 79 CJ5 that I'm going to change the distributor out with an HEI. I'm so glad to have seen this and I will be sure to apply the grease to the gear. Sorry but thank you. I'm rewiring and installing some new gauges and other stuff.
It would also be a good idea to try swapping out the gears to keep the original gear on the new distributor. I hope the grease helps, but I have heard of this happening to so many jeepers I would take every precaution I could!
I have a 79 CJ5 same color, same decals without the Levi's sticker. It also came with a 304 but now has a 360 and heavily modified everything else. I've had it since the 80's.
Good entertainment, I just bought a brand new 2022. Mahindra roxor off-road, which is the old Willis Jeep. Base model having fun adding a lot of accessories.
That sounds like fun! Where in the world are you able to do that? I don't think Oregon would let you bring one of those in because of Federal crash standards!
Those screws that hold the brake drum onto the hub - the putpose of those is to make sure the drums don't fall off while going down the assemlby line. That was their function. It's perfectly fine to leave them off.
I had the white and blue with Levi package Renegade with the bikini top and doors Ford 304 with the black side pipes two of the gas Jerry cans mounted on each side of the spare tire. And it's true doing a j-turn will put it on its side going 45 miles an hour. It's all fun and games until someone gets an eye put out. The early 80s were a fun time
Hey there just saw your video I live just north of ya in British Columbia Canada , Iam in a similar situation when it comes to lugnut locks my 74 CJ5 had been sitting since about 2001 & there are locks on all 4 wheels I have seen plenty of other videos on wheel lock removal but most of them are on newer cars not ones that have been sitting for over a decade, any info on how you managed to get them off?
I'm glad you're also saving an old Jeep! You can see my update video here: th-cam.com/video/7hhUUjfhiUs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4DCgl_-9rOT0KFvm I also have some shorts, and I'll be making new long form videos soon! What inspired you to work on an old Jeep?
BTW, the disbributor gear issue had nothing to do with not lubing the gear. AMC have to have a matched set (distributor and cam gear). You could of reused the original gear from your original distributor and been fine. Ask me how I know. I wiped one out in the 80's.
Don't miss the follow-up where I fixed the Jeep AGAIN!

Nice. Just inherited my dads 74 CJ5. Been sitting 30 years and fortunately in the garage. So my adventure will begin within the month. Haha
That is awesome! Will you be posting any pictures or video online? Let me know so I can follow along. Good luck!

Make sure you watch my two other update videos! I just ordered new seats, and I'm working on a video for my soft top project!

It was too good an opportunity to pass up, both because of the condition of the Jeep and the connection to my friend!

I understand. I cheat and have a mechanic work on my daily driver...

You're welcome! And thank you for the feedback. I'm working on my next Jeep video now, so look for it in about a week!
Man that brings back sweet memories 🇺🇸👍
I'm glad I could help you with a trip down memory lane.
I just bought a 1977 CJ5 304 2 owner yesterday that set for 18 years. The adventure begins
Watch out for the distributor gears if you replace the original distributor with an HEI model...
Nice score. I have a '77 CJ-5 as well. You'll love it.
It's so much fun! Look for more videos soon!
Awesome love the jeep. I’m from Eugene so was cool to see that.
Thanks!
very cool , thanks for the video - im recommisioning mine as we speak
Great! Send me a link to any pictures or videos you post!

Wow! I'm glad you survived! My plan is to keep it below 55 mph, and stick to back roads when I'm out in the Jeep.
@@DrPronghorn Thanks, very sound strategy, the Jeep is a useful vehicle.
i used to drive my 77 on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles about 60mph - i wouldnt want to go much faster than that though - still have , 20 years now
Had the exact same issue when I put an hei in my ‘77 with a 304. Hearted the hard way. Needs matching gears.
It sounds like just about everyone is having this issue, I wish the manufacturers would learn from it!

Had mine parked in the woods.for 23 just got it running .. so cool.😊
Sweet! Did you post any pictures anywhere? I would love to see!
I have 77 cj-5 also !! Nice R.V.cam ,lifted 6inches.35" Hercules tires ,new Holley. Full Role Gage.
Sounds great! Do you have pictures on Instagram or somewhere so we can see it?
I have a 79 CJ5 same color, same decals without the Levi's sticker. It also came with a 304 but now has a 360 and heavily modified everything else. I've had it since the 80's.

Another Jeep Saved! I wish I lived closer I would have to try and buy it
People have already been trying to buy it! I'm not selling, though.

That's what I've learned since I put it back together... I won’t bother with them next time!
I had the white and blue with Levi package Renegade with the bikini top and doors Ford 304 with the black side pipes two of the gas Jerry cans mounted on each side of the spare tire. That sounds awesome, except for putting it on its side... Thanks for watching!
Nice find
Thanks!
The Renegade has a factory installed lockers both axle a good find bro !
I hadn't heard that before! So cool! Thanks!
Love the video really love the jeep🤩😎
Thanks! 👍

I just banged on a hardened socket that was slightly too small, then used an impact gun to hammer them off.
Hi. How’s the Jeep doing today? I have this exact Jeep and I am about to bring it home to restore. I have no clue where to start.
I'm glad you're also saving an old Jeep! You can see my update video here:
th-cam.com/video/7hhUUjfhiUs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4DCgl_-9rOT0KFvm
I also have some shorts, and I'll be making new long form videos soon!
What inspired you to work on an old Jeep?
Where did you buy your rebuild kit for the carburetor?
I get just about everything from Summit. I believe that's where I got the kit
Great! We have never had Jeeps V8 in Brazil
That's too bad! It's crazy fun with the V8!
I was very surprised that you lubricated the plugs but skipped the dist driven gear. Too bad. John from Cape Cod
It was an expensive lesson
3:50 my tires are from the 90s and I drive them lol
You're braver than me!

I've read that in a lot of places since I made this video. I guess I'm just the latest jeeper to make this mistake!
Any chance this jeep would be for sale?
I'm sorry, but I think my family would kill me if I ever sold this jeep! It's too much fun!
How’s the jeep doing now? I enjoyed you cideo
I have a follow up video and more to come! Here's the follow up: th-cam.com/video/7hhUUjfhiUs/w-d-xo.html
Does yj dash fits cj5 dash panel?
I wish I knew
I wish I knew
It's important to have a truck that will stops and won't go. You don't want a truck that will go and won't stop 😂
Stopping is always more important than going!
@@DrPronghorn that's not how you win the race! Then again, a jeep isn't a race car
Looks the same as my CJ 7
It must be a beautiful Jeep, then!
Awesome Jeep! Check out mine!
Sweet! Thanks for sharing!
Man this Jeep is a great resto candidate…….everyone will hate on me but if it was mine, I’m looking for an inline 6…….
I understand the appeal of the six. I love the way the V8 sounds!
Unless they were dry-rotted those tires were most likely still fine.
Better safe than sorry, especially with something so important as tires!
