- I ordered a new Hoya obovata and when I took it out of the box, even though it had a beautiful peduncle on it-and looked as if it may bloom, it had a general chlorosis that worried me. As soon as I pulled it out of its nursery pot-I saw what was wrong: It was not only terribly root-bound, but the potting medium had shrunk and it was impossible for the plant to obtain any nutrition, so we're going to try to resolve that here.

I'll keep everyone updated on the Hoya progress. Will say the thumbnail shot for this video was taken approximately 1 week after the new repot and fertilize and the leaves have already started to green up so nicely.

I recently came into possession of my grandmother’s 54 year old Hoya carnosa which has to her knowledge never been repotted… without saying too much I needed the tips in this video!
I have never seen a root bound Hoya! Wow those roots! That is such a beautiful full plant.
Super helpful. I got a large Hoya obovata this weekend with the same issue. I purchased it because I want to repot it and propagate it, I am sure it's root-bound and definitely needs time to get back to the lovely darker green . Thank you!

For epiphytic Hoyas, it doesn't require any soil/rock particles, but bark like medium. I'm from the Philippines btw, we use purely coco husk/chunks.

Getting the perlite a bit wet before working with it prevents that fine dust from floating around. I just spay it a bit with a spray bottle.

Absolutely. It's really started to green up already. Actually, the thumbnail shows it one week later, and it's already turning a beautiful hue of green compared to the overall yellow malaise it had before.

Hello from subtropical Queensland Australia. All my hoyas are in small terracotta pots with orchid mix pumice and some sphagnum moss and are allowed to express their epiphytic character growing in palms , cordylines and assorted trees. They grow with their epiphytic orchid friends including vanilla and they flower constantly. They get the morning sun and afternoon shade. One is just about to grow into constant sunshine and I now can’t wait to see if the leaves yellow or if the Hoya starts to grow downwards. Seems so unfair others have to battle growing hoyas, but we don’t have daffodils tulips and autumn leaves.
This a great standard Hoya mix. I would love you too do a video on the range of Hoyas and their varied Hoya soil mixes. Something we discuss a lot in the Hoya hunter community. Some like a acidic soil and some love alkaline. I have some just in pon.

Great informative video Summer, as always. Have you ever used a Hydrogen Peroxide mix to loosen the rootball? I've been reading that it airiates the soil, sterilises it, and its great for getting rid of a host of different bugs.
Anyone have thoughts on H/P?
Does using H2O2 make much of a difference on soil porosity? I don't know. I'll have to do more research on that. I'm sure, however, that it would make a nice disinfectant, but whether it disinfects both beneficial and non-beneficial bacteria/organisms, I don't know.

Store bought hydrogen peroxide contains trace silver and can retard growth long term :( probably as a one time thing it would be ok but apparently not great to use
Hi Summer, good luck with beauty! I have most of my Hoyas and Orchids I LECA and they are just loving it! I did have a few that just did like it and back to my homemade potting mix they went. I just purchased two Hoya Curtsii and ill try to transition them to LECA next spring. And they are so tiny and adorable! 😍😍. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Cool. I know lots of folks have moved over to LECA. From what I've seen, plants look happy and healthy but interesting that some of yours didn't take to it. That's what we're here for, to experiment, observe, and educated! Very good! Thanks for sharing.

Loved this video! Very interesting to see you troubleshooting your plant! My obovata is a lighter green as well (not root bound), i have it growing under a grow light in a cabinet - do you thing that might be a reason why it lost its deep green colour? I live in bc and we don't have a lot of sun outside of summer months so having it under a grow light might mean it potentially won't have enough
That would be plausible to think the light has something to do with it. Only way to know is to experiment further. I have a Philodendron and the leaves that grow towards the light lose their chlorophyll (or it degrades) and those leaves are often lighter.

Wouldn’t vitamin B-1 the best solution in water and then soak it for a week or so? Then transplant it in better soil?

That was my initial inclination too when I got my first Hoya.
I'm so glad I'm not the only person who lovers Dr. Bronners castle soap
I would immediately take this Hoya out of its new pot and repot it into a conical shaped container. If you keep it where it is and the root system grows to the edges you won't be able to ever remove it again due to the pot being wider at the bottom than the top.
... I have made that mistake myself and had to break the pot! 😪💔
With these pots it can help to let the plant dry out completely, the roots shrink up and might let you squeeze them out

Love Dr Bronners peppermint soap 😊 I use it with neem oil during the monthly pamper sessions for my plants 🪴 I don’t use soil anymore but use pon so during the pamper session they also get flushed. Looking forward to seeing your obovata recover, the variegated version is on my wish list.

I always thought if you change the soil out you shouldn’t fertilize right away since the new soil is full of nutrients already. Also, orchid potting mix is acidic right? Wouldn’t it be too much for a Hoya?
The orchid bark mix doesn't have any additional nutrients other than aged pine bark, horticultural charcoal, perlite. It's more of a neutral pH because they add limestone to adjust it. Over time, as the components, like the bark, begin to break down, they'll release some nutrients, but consider that a long, long, slow release. With an organic fertilizer, you won't have any issue either. I typically would be winding down on fertilizing about now anyway, but this plant was clearly without access to nutrients for a while for its root-boundedness, so that's the decision that felt right to me. I will say that the thumbnail shot was done about a week after and the leaves have already started to green up nicely. I think if I give it just a few more weeks, it'll be a lot better. I still want to possibly add some magnesium as well.

Hi just found your channel an enjoyed this Video. I am a new Hoya owner of a little Mathilde. So cute. Won't be repot for 3 to 6 months but have a fertilizer Dya Gro Foliage 9-3-6 I was going to use. Hope it's OK. With Cactus Soil and extra perlite and bark. Thanks dear.
Interesting that it is a Hoya obovata. The second I saw it I thought 'Hoya australis' because that is exactly what H. austrralis' leaves look like when they have too much sun ect. The flowers look the same too... more research is needed....

it's so odd to me that you could even free up the roots of a plant that rootbound, especially to that extent, i personally would have probably impatiently ripped through all of the roots
i used to use bark in my plants, but i found for me it robs the plant of nutirnets and also causes bugs

I've given up on them. But still admire them from a distance. 🤦🏾♀️
If you see the dust in the air it's already too late. Wear a mask if you are going to use pearlite.

It was sadly stressed, but it's already greening up with some good love. I'm actually surprised how quickly it started to green up.
I think that’s why I will not be a leca grower anytime soon. I love making up my own mixes. That looked such a satisfying job ❤🪴
I enjoy learning from your experiences and others you tour. You know this now but, the light blue label of Dr. Bonner's Castille soap is baby friendly and unscented.

The swedish plant guys taught me I should only fertilize my plant when they are feeling good.
Maybe if you're using the intensity of a synthetic fertilizer during the non-growing season, but how are you ever going to get the plant "feeling good" ever again if it has a macro or micronutrient deficiency-whether indoors or out?
@@summerrayneoakes Thanks for your reply, you freed those crowded and bounded roots for this Hoya I believe it will thrive in the near future, but if this is my Hoya I would fertilize it after a week or two when it's feeling better than now, afterall rescue those bounded roots possible wound the roots too,could shock or stress a little bit of the plant, but maybe not,we don't really know how is the plant feels, we just do what we can to help them to get better and healthy grow!
@@rabbitpeng I also think that perhaps the gentleman may have been referring to when plants are under siege from pests or the like. That can be very taxing if you try to fertilize a plant. But generally, if a plant is suffering from a nutrient deficiency, you respond by either giving it that nutrient, or adjusting the nutrients that may be binding up that nutrient, which can also occur. I will say that the thumbnail for this video was shot 1 week after and the amount the plant has greened up from the time of shooting the video, and the elasticity/turgidity back into the leaves is a very good sign. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here.

I have a feeling that I did a really bad thing cutting the hoya vine shorter. I see them everywhere with those vines hanging, but still I couldn't resist, and cut it. I'm learning now that potential flowers would grow off those vines? Should I really worry?
Atumn is typically a good time to transplant indoor plants ? Noticed nodules on the flower branch were those roots to be propagated or does this plant have to be divided. could listen to you all day long … and I do on the road keeps me calm cause I drive for work and always on guard. you really do it for me the knowledge you share seems endless and would love to find a plant lady of my own to join in my love for flora. completely fell in love after this one my gut tells me Ill be falling back on your channel for advice once I curate my apartment with some A+ varietals / cultivars (dying to get a prayer plant ) speaking of prayers I pray you are always in a positive place with optimism and good people that are true friends that guide you in the right direction so you achieve the goals you set forth effortlessly seek fortune with a pure intent and you might find yourself with abundance. love you… night be good lol think you got that covered tho!!!

This was so helpful. Showing how to nurse a borderline sick root bound plant back to thriving condition gave me the confidence I needed to transfer my small collection into the right soil medium, the right pot type and size and the best lighting for them. Summer has almost arrived here in Florida so now is the time. Hoyas like summer in Florida. Thank you Summer for putting this all together.
