On the topic of time savers if you pick a point and use shift+h or shift+v you automatically set the dimensions relative to the origin. No need to go and select the origin every time. Great vid!
I'm using .19.1 (started FreeCAD a few days ago). When I add the facebinder, most of the existing features get ripped out of the body, then the loft can't be done because the components are out of the body's scope. I worked around this by lofting from another sketch I made to replicate the face created by the neck groove. Hopefully this won't cause issues during part 2.
I had to watch that several times to understand what was happening. It would have helped massively if I had known the groove was going to rotate around the "Datum Line" ie that the "Datum Line" was an 'Axis' Once I realise that and replayed it. Perfect sense :-) Going to walk the dog now (Great time to pause and reflect, thanks for the interval) Looking forward to watching the next part
Hey Kelvin! I think I know what part you mean, I think I literally said 'Z' rather than saying 'Create the groove around the Z axis' and then clicking on the datum line! Sorry about that! Glad the two parts make it useful for you. Hopefully part two will go a little smoother than part 1 :)
@@AndrewCAD Actuly no, it's the point at 8:50 where you say I'm going to set a "Datum Line" meaning to act as an 'Axis' about which you'll rotate the triangle by using the Groove function. Once I realised that it made sense. Too many Datum this Datum that's, my mind was spinning LOL ;-)
Ive been trying to learn freecad and im really struggling. With my work schedule 60-70 hours a week and juggling family time, its taking forever to pick this up. Im lost at what to do...
Hey JW0149! I used the face binder tool to allow me to create a loft between the 16mm diameter sketch, and the bottom of the chess piece. The facebinder is linked to the face I selected, so if I ever update the model, it should also update. Hope this helps! :)
@@AndrewCAD So why not just loft directly off the face, what extra does "face binder" bring? We appreciate your tutorials, but so much better when they explain the why not just the how. Thanks.
@@JW0149 The face binder allows you to actually loft, you cant just loft from a sketch to a face it wont let you. I should've explained that better, so thank you for you feed back, it's much appreciated! :)
The knight is the hardest to model, but you make easy work of it here. Great job.
Thank you! It was great fun trying to figure out how to make it :)

I did it by accident the other day, so will try to do that from now on, especially as it's easier to select a line than a point 😅

@@kelvink8955 I definitely say 'datum' 1 to many times! ;) Thank you for pointing that out, I'll try to make it less confusing next time :)
It is very nice, but where do you get all those dimensions? It looks so easy when you are drawing it...

Nice, but I can barely hear you over my 3d printer. Just me?
