- CHECK OUT THE SPORT COMPACT COMPARISON:
www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/...
Thanks to three turbochargers, 724 horsepower and five limited-slip differentials, comparing the 2008 Mazdaspeed 3, 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX and 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart should be more entertaining than a cage match between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and New Kids on the Block. Imagine the fun! Donny and Danny hangin' tough from the walls of the cage while Joey, Jordan and Jonathan get tossed into the crowd.
The way we see it, our Rampage vs. New Kids bout is no different from pitting the Mazdaspeed 3 - the current champ of the sport compact world - against the Lancer Ralliart and Subaru WRX. On the track, an epic ass-kicking is bound to ensue.
But comparison tests aren't always won on the track. Since these cars all share a focus on real-world driving for enthusiasts, we weighted performance as 25 percent of this test's scoring total, leaving the remaining points to price (20 percent), feature content (20 percent), fuel economy (15 percent), our subjective evaluation (15 percent) and personal and recommended picks (5 percent).
So performance is important, but in the end, the most well-rounded car wins. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
I test drove all 3 plus many others and I settled on the Ralliart. 120,000 miles later and I don’t regret my decision
Agreed wonder if these fools figured out there was a sport mode or not, heck theirs even a ssport
Don't know what these people are smoking but my ralliart does 0-100km in 5.5 easy.
Being a dual clutch auto AWD it's not like it's going to be a hard car to launch either!
I thought they didnt have launch control
@@ariyankhan4337 Super Sports mode in ralliart has launch control , but it takes a toll on the sst , I leave mine in sports mode as the file for SS mode is not compatible for the 08 ralliart only 09 upwards can have it. mine hit 5.2 sec easy in sports mode
why is the ralliart 0-60 in 6.6 seconds??? have it in sport mode and launch it in automatic as hard as you can (dont floor it too long) and it can get a 5.5 second...
Where did they get the 0-60 time for the Ralliart from? It does 0-60 in 5.4....
The Evo does this, not the Ralliart
@@maffy715 evo does it in 4.8 secs
lol, 2 out of 3 editors chose the Ralliart so the Mazda wins?
webduelist nahh
umm i dont know but i have the lancer ex gt i do 100 km in 9.5 seconds they say the ralliart do 5.5 seconds can i upgrade my lancer like ralliart engine or what ever they put in it?
Hey.... do the MazdaSpeed 3 rear, front or all wheels drive ?
i know exactly what you mean man....i already have all my stage 2 parts and the suspension....since im going to work site for like a month the installation will need to be on hold, after i get back get everything installed and ProTune it
but i did drive my buddy's '06 wrx with 18G in it....that thing is a beast....made 340whp/337tq...very very fun
what year is yours?
FINALLY U MAKE A VIDEO
So what's the difference between an 08 and 09 wrx?
So...how do you plan on shifting into second and third with both hands on the wheel again? Yes torque steer is manageable when you have BOTH hands on the wheel...less so with just one. And when your swerving as you shift gears, your scrubbing speed.
@Davex495 Do you have a ralliart or ever been in one? They are very under estimated. Keep in mind boost hits very low in the ralliarts, much lower than the evo x. Even if idid just have someone time me with a stop watch, theres no possible way I would get 0-60 in 6.6. Pay attention to the video and notice they dont launch the car at all. I can launch it at 4 thousand rpms, and get my turbo spooled up before take off...A lot of people dont think you can launch with an sst trany, but u can.
i just sold 2 2014 model evos this week!
they updated the dash finally!
I own a Mazda and it is so much fun, i really love it. Would never change it for anything else at this sort of price range
Zoom Zoom Then you never test drove a Ralliart
@@audilicous why would I, if there's an evo no reason for a rally art
@@tubesock509 The Ralliart has a limited slip differential, that's why I went with it
Before watching the video I was thinking it would be amazing to see Mazdaspeed3 taking on second spot among the other beasts but instead it scored first, just WOW. MAZDASPEED way to go!
I have an '11 eclispe with a similar Mitsu leather wrapped steering wheel. I can confirm that they are very nice.
@flipmodified66 Did you use proper timing equipment? The car's speedo is not accurate nor is just having someone start/stop a stopwatch.
you won't touch the MS3. what was your trap speed anyways??
@bryguymate And the 2011 WRX with the newly tuned up chassis was available in 2008....how?
MazdaSpeed3 for the win
I like that Ralliart. Just wish the inside looked nicer...
but the ralliart is a tuned lancer and the wrx is a tuned impreza, whats the problem?
@mehiael I haven't seen one yet, the 2012 Ford ST
the mazdaspeed3 was designed to fit into that market. the sti and evo are higher performance cars.... if mazda wanted to build a car to compete with those two then they definitely could have. but with a few bolt-ons the mazda is easily just as fast as a stock sti or evo.
This review brought to you by mazda...
get a premium package ralliart, it has leather recaros and a sun roof from the EVO MR
i love my MS3... the aftermarket is hoppin up too, which is a good thing, because it's going to need it if it is going to hang with modded WRX and raliarts..
First of all, the Spec-c is not the run of the mill STI, second, The driver was new to the car, new to the course and had to do it in traffic. TH-cam wont let me post the link to the article, but if you want the facts, I will PM it to you. On a closed course with a professional driver familiar to the track, been getting in the 8:20s. Thank you
Maybe cause it's only sold in the US?
That's because it's factory tuned toward rally, not tarmac. This has always been the case with the WRX and STi. It's why the STi always wins in dirt comparisons vs Evo and the Evo wins in the track comparisons. Subys are tuned to understeer to be more controllable in the dirt, Mitsus oversteer for track performance.
The Tires and Rims on the Ralliart are the main flaw in it. Some sites put better tires on the Ralliart and it hit MUCH higher numbers durring the road tests.
ChrisM187 you have a good point, i am just the type that will put in a lil extra bread to go that extra mile. the 4b11 has forged mahle internals. this is why i would rather the ralli art. the stock motor can handle the power a gt40 will throw at it. and the compression is boost friendly. but your point has been taken.
@ColbOCon Those are out of the 3s class... why would they do that? Smart guy
I think Mitsubishi would be way more fun on the track and fun everyday over the MAAZDa. As the front wheel drive have Torque Steering issue, under whelming understeering. It's too much power for it to be handle on a tight track. Really need an open road to be enjoyed, which limit itself.
@strokerpilot I had to wonder about that too. He mentioned some features and LSD on both ends, but also said "it was the slowest of the group". That would kill it for me.
no, the suspension is not a downgraded version of an evo, that was the biggest problem reviewers saw with the ralliart was that the suspension was crap, if they would have at least shared the suspension with the evo, the ralliart would be a much better car.
Hell ya! love my MS3
The comment I responded to called into question not only the speed of Honda cars, but also the sportiness.
The above cars are known as some of the best handling cars in their playing field (particularly the Prelude, which is known as the best-handling FWD car, and the S2000, which is commonly spoken of as orgasmically fun to drive.)
Your comment is irrelevant to the point I was trying to make with the comment I was replying to.
I believe it is now my turn to wish you a good day. But I won't.
@vivolorosso Umm how so? My orginal point was about the WRX vs the RA...which is that the WRX is a better car stock and the RA tunes up nicer...going with 2011 vs 2011 models. I fail to see how pointing out that the MS3 has TS even remotely goes against this point.
lol I recall my stage 1 days...they were fun for a week or 2 and then i went stage 2 and that was fun for a few months and now I run a 16g set up which is gunna be fun for a few more months
you're so correct on this one.....before wrx used to kill anything in its class....no they are made for old people...
i have '06 wrx but i really enjoy it
is that glendora mountain road? O_o;
O-60 in the ralliart is not 6.6 seconds. Ive timed myself at atleast 5.5 everytime, with a little launch. They dont launch the ralliart in the video...
I love the MPS! As much as I wish it had AWD, I don't how it would really benefit from it. If it didn't snow here I would be all over it!
Can't say that I'm impressed with the Ralliart's acceleration numbers, though. I was hoping it would break the 6 sec. range from 0-60. Seems like it might be tricky to launch. I was looking to cheap out of buying an Evo but it's getting more n more tempting!
Oh, no comments on that thing with a Subaru badge.
Actually, is was on a closed course and with a driver that has been driving for suburu on the nurburgring for a long time. The article about the guy driving the mazdaspeed3 even said that "the only experience I have with this track is on playstation" and that he was amazed that he could get a time of 8:39 with traffic and having never driven on the course or the car, and goes on saying that the time is a testimony to how good the car handle on the track. Learn your facts.
Actually, if you've ever really ridden in a few of them you immediately know the difference. After being in my friends WRX for a few days, I had test drove a brand new Cobalt SS and immediately i noticed not the materials, but the design, and how usable it was, and the cobalt was horrible compared to how surprisingly elegant the WRX dashboard and seats are.
For the price how about the new v6 mustang or camaro? I think it's also odd the Civic isn't here or the Genesis Coupe. If you just wanted perforance you could throw in a Miata in as well. I guess when they say "SportCompact" they mean "Ugly Sport Station Wagon"
Check the specs, the drag times, and the track times. Edmunds says themselves that the Cobalt SS/TC "is the fastest car under $25,000"
the mazdaspeed 3 looks exactly the same on the interior. I have a mazda 3 and its almost the same, except for the extra gear ratio and the seats. The ralliart is a much better effort on improving the whole car all around rather than just the power and seats. If I was 20 feet away from the mazdaspeed 3, I wouldn't know if it was even what it is. No joke
They changed a lot in the 2009 WRX. I heard the 2008 sucks it up, it went from 224 to 265 hp Along with a few more goodies.
I'm all over the forums, oil leak problem, problems with the boost? What forums are you looking at? The only two issues are motor mount and running rich. I have 40k miles on my speed3 and no issues, and that is with mods.
umm the 2010 ms3 is going to have the same 2.3 mzr turbo disi engine as the 2009 it has the same numbers 263hp and 280tq but different gears and a hood scoop and heavier by 103lbs
I'm thinking the 3 won because it had best scores out of all the tests. I think what they meant was that 2 out of the 3 editors that picked the mitsu liked how it drove vs. the Mazda 3. Again, a matter of opinion. The 3's steering is very quick and takes some time getting used to. When I first got my 3 in 07, I found myself turning way too early into a corner compared to my previous car. It's very fun though once you get used to it.
isnt mazda japanese??? (not tryin to start stuff just wonderin)
Mitsu isn't going to stop making the Evo. Evo XI is already in development and expected for 2014 or 2015.
You poor poor soul
Vincent Nobert LMAOOO
As a Ralliart owner I completely agree with you. But at least you get a leather wrapped steering wheel!
Nice profile pic
Nah, Edmunds is well known for their bias. For them, its BMW > Japan > America. Most reviewers have the same bias, which is almost entirely due to the cheap interiors that have plagued domestics for decades.
I do like Edmunds though. They are very thorough and do a great job of testing the performance vehicles and giving you an idea of how it handles on the track, etc. They even tell you the weather conditions on the day of their test.
If 2 out of 3 editors picked the Lancer, how on Earth does it only come in at 2nd place?!
There has only been one sponsored even by Mazda, and it ran an 8:39.66 with the guy that was new to the track and to the car. It would be very odd that we would be talking about two different articles but have EXACTLY the same time.
@AlexanderBlueAvenue Agreed, BUT in retrospect to the Mazda the WRX is about 7k MORE! You can get a loaded MS3 for 23-24k, a WRX starts at about 28k and fully optioned 30k is easily surpassed. So for the money, I'd still choose the MS3. The WRX costs as much as a base 370Z. Not biased, just facts.
They're missing the '08 Cobalt SS Turbo in this comparison! That things puts number out that even the MS3 won't. Just check it's 8:22 Nurburgring lap time!
like it or hate it but you cant argue that the cobalt should be in the conversation... its specs are as good or better than all of these cars and it costs less
My favorite one is the evo 6
well, people say they would choose evo or sti over the ms3...
in that case i'll choose nissan gt-r over evo n sti anyday
Then its a good thing neither the Evolution nor the STi are in this video isnt it?
Hey Spanna ...MS3 torque steer is b.s. >> you turn off the traction control... and you don't even have to hold the wheel..I can hit 4 gears before I have to grab the wheel..love the mitsu though..always a good choice..But still love my MS3
14 years have past, and my GSR still remains unbeaten by the current budget rockets. Even though, these cars are going to beat me eventually i guess.
In the C&D November 2008 issue the Cobalt SS took first place in the lightning lap (beating the MS3 by 3 seconds while costing about $1000 less)
Fail.
True!
traded in a 2002 imprez wrx for the 09 wrx 265. The 09 has alot more lung off the line to 60, but for i dnt feels as comfortable hitting coners very hard because of the soft suspension/ body roll on the 09. As for as the looks on new subies go. you just have to seen on in person and if possible a walk around. there sick. sick enough to ditch a 02 for 09
I'm a Mitsubishi fan do I'd go with the Ralliart.
I understand that part, but 20-90 mph times for the speed3 beat even the evo and STI, mostly because they produce close to the same power, but the mazdaspeed3 has fwd. But those times are very important on the track, that is where I pass most cars is in that speed range.
Mazda can easily keep up with both the EVO X and STI too.
Downpipe, Testpipe, Catback, Short Ram Intake.
300WHP easy. And you can find all that for around a grand.
So for about 25 grand you have a car keepin up with $35,000 cars.
im a speed3 owner, i love my car , but the new cobalt turbo ss is going to be a quick car. lauch control, brembo's , forged wheels and 260hp for under 22g's. wow
@AnTHoNyB1125 And do you have any idea how long the engine and drivetrain will last on those? Yeah I can make a RA with 300WHP with 20 bucks...it'll break the car...rather quickly, but hey it's 300WHP for only 20 bucks...right? The AWD system on the WRX is crap. Even with just a stage two cobb tuning, the AWD system starts to strip, Give it like 60k miles and it will be stripped clean...more power, faster it goes. The pistons will melt with 500+ crank HP on a stock WRX internal quickly.
actually the cobalt ss (turbo) lets you go that fast or faster for the same or less money
why dont you guys test those two against eachother?
The new gen Mazdaspeed3 is 280 bhp and powered by a 2.5 T, i cant even imagine how fast that 1 is
I've gotten my 08 lancer Gts stock clocked at 0-60 7.2 on the track so I find it hard to believe the 85 more HP turbo Ralliart gets 6.6 seconds.
seanjohn000 my ralliart does in 5.4
I love all these little cars... I have a wrx but I don't talk crap on any of these cars. They can all be EASILY and safely modded to blow people's minds. I used to be "American muscle all the way!" but I love the little turbo'd 4 bangers! Maybe not as competitive in a straight line, but way more fun!
Some people have a lot to learn!
what the hell are you talking about? have you been inside of an Evo (which the ralliart is based on)? they are no more impressive on the inside than a stock lancer. i would say considering that the WRX isnt even subys top of the line it is pretty nice
the ms3 really kicked ass here
@orviss2 the 09 wrx had 224 hp. The 10 wrx moved to 265.
People actually rally with their WRX/STi's. Seeing how the Evo is no longer even competing with STi's in rallies anymore, they've tuned them more toward the street. WRX/STi's are tuned to understeer on purpose. Any review between the two in dirt has the WRX/STi coming out on top. It's more like Mitsu needs to stick to its rally roots than Suby has to fix its purposeful understeer.
@Camua hatchback is IN. hatchback is HOT. Hatchback has a sportier look. The BMW 1 series has a hatchback version too, it's HOT.
A 400whp WRX STi isn't unheard of as there are many people who make 400whp off the stock block with bolt-ons & a tune. In terms of transmission & suspension, the WRX (USDM) is trash. However, a TRUE WRX (JDM) comes face to face with the RA in everything you can possibly think of. The JDM ej207 is a far cry from the USDM ej205 as it comes from the factory with forged internals & the suspension is all STi spec.
Maybe cause an rs4 has a 4.2L V8 and it also cost about 80grand? not same category at all.
what the hell is that FRONT WHEEL DRIVE doin there???
good one
The lightning lap and Nurburgring tests speed, handling, and overall performance. I've driven an MS3 before - it's alright, but nothing spectacular. Maybe it was because I wasn't driving a Grand Touring like they were, but then again I wouldn't pay $26,000 for a FWD car. That's silly.
@arson519 why is it an evo wannabe when its competitor is the wrx.
True that... They really messed up making the STI a hatchback...
@nsskid oh yeah?? I had no clue...
The 2011 is the same as the 2012 since the 2012 is a carry over until the new one comes out in 2013. But ye, the mid refresh on the WRX in 2011 was freaking HUGE.
I'd like to see the same test with the 2009 wrx.
I was hoping the Ralliart would be cheaper, its too slow for a car that close to 30k. If it was 25k it would be more worthwhile.
@SauceCaptain camaro starts at 27k with out tax.
Civic's engine has a noticeable lag when u want to floor it (even rev comes down really slow almost 2 seconds after you leave the throttle).
Genesis as you said is a coup car and all cars here had 4 doors. In fact all cars you mentioned were coupes.
ralliart is not out until this fall 2008. you cant go wrong on any of this 3, but if you leave on a snowy state ms3 is not good bec. its fwd
yes
Where's the Cobalt SS/TC that owns all three of them, for a whole lot less money?
I like the Mazada and would probably get one. But instead I went in a different direction and got the V6 Genesis. Oh well, take it easy
