That’s the one I really appreciated about Juan and JT. Thomas is an incredible drummer in his own right, but he added to the chaos instead of being the consistent heart beat of the band. Juan will never return to TMV since Omar and Cedric don’t like him anymore 😭😭
You gotta check out This Town Needs Guns (TTNG) Their drummer is Chris Collis and he is extremely original Songs to check out would be: Chinchilla, There’s No I in Time, and Triptych
Deantoni has a bunch of solo albums, he plays synth while playing drums, ive seen him play it live. I enjoy his work but i still think Jon Theodore is the iconic Mars Volta drummer.
@@AureliusR Yeah, I find his ghost notes don't come through so clearly in QoTSA, and he has to play very heavy handed so his incredible dynamics also don't come through. I haven't listened to the latest album a heap though tbh.
Regarding the "head nod" comment, I think Omar used to have several signals like adjusting his glasses to signal ending a section or how many times to repeat a section
Yep, you can even kind of see everyone setting up for that moment and focusing on Omar as he hands off the droning chords to the loop. These guys are *tight.*
Chops....haha, awesome! Thanks for another good one, man. Love your reviews. Going to send that to a friend who'll really love to hear that. Take care man!
Absolute pioneers. This entire series of videos he released captured some of the most original music being performed at such a high level of musicianship.
Jimmy Chamberlin - Smashing Pumpkins -- Silverf*ck. And hell yes on one of the 50 million Omar projects. The Apocalypse Inside of an Orange is one hell of a ride.
His album "You're Welcome" (どういたしまして) with Ximena Sariñana on vocals is a wonderful buffet of Omar's songs and a good introductory album for new listeners.
Haha man you look like a lot of fun, cheers to you for making it through this shitty times and bringing some entertainment to all of us. Take this like as a cold beer for you Sr!
Fuck I miss The Mars Volta. I can spend a day listening to their albums one after the other and get to the end and just want more. That's when I console myself with Omar's solo stuff.
When he said "There's a lot of kids there." I thought the same thing. Then I realized in 2010 I would've been 20-21, so I would've been one of those kids at that show, lol! Time flies!
that show influenced me massively (played in a Mars-esque prog band for many years). I wasn't actually a big fan of Parks with the Mars Volta, but he's a monster on these records and the live shows are superb.
Hey Garret! Much love from fellow percussionist here in Florida. Digging the videos lately. Also the Live streams are great. You got them sof ass jazz hands. 👍Stay safe and healthy. Hope you and the fam are keeping close to home. P.s. I'm racking my brain for my addition to your spreadsheet. Cheers!
That one kid in the audience is so bonked out on molly or shrooms...maybe both! You can see him behind dentoni around 4:14...he was the star of the show!
To answer his inquiry "I wonder how much of this is written & how much is improv": The intro & outro is written & played the same way every time. The poetry/words/mouth sounds Omar makes over the (for lack of a better term) verses/choruses clearly are made up on the spot over an established progression(s)... Lastly the middle section or "having a musical conversation" as Omar often calls it: The riff (& I believe the length of this section) that's repeated endlessly (clearly in the spirit of Afro Beat improv sections) on the Bass & Keys is the only pre-determined part used strictly to anchor the piece from descending into total chaos as the guitar soloing, improvised drumming & atmospheric noise being played by Omar, D & Lars respectively are all made up on the spot, every time . . .
at the time of release of this live album (You're Welcom or Dōitashimashite ) all songs had been released on studio, except this one. This is all improvisation. ;P
it is worth noting that not all the oRL band sounds like this. much of it is actually way more song orientated than what is presented here. also deantoni plays bass via keys ala the doors for much of the current oRL band stuff
Please do Kashikura Takashi from Toe. He's probably one of the most unique drummers I've ever heard. The live version of Goodbye is just some of the most emotive drumming you'll ever see/hear.
you should react to some of the Zildjian Live Season 1 stuff. Especially Larnell Lewis (the "linebacker" from Snarky Puppy), Thomas Pridgen, and Aaron Spears
that was sick! crazy good player, music had a very jazzy, improv feel to itt. Check out some DnB or Jungledrummers, also jawdropping to me what they do on hi-hat variations sometimes
Would love to see your reaction to some Zach Hill from Hella/Death Grips (he also played in El Grupo Nuevo De Omar Rodriguez-Lopez & various other Math-Rock projects lol) or some Brian Chippendale from Lightning Bolt/Black Pus
that was insane...man, you should check out one of this videos Marco Minnemann - Drum For Your Life (Performance) or Steven Wilson - Soundcheck Moscow - Craig Blundell's Drum Cam - Vermillioncore ....Love your channel!!!
awesome videos man, greetings from venezuela, you should check out anything fron nate wood four he plays pretty much everything with no overdubs the guy plays the drums while playing a couple of synths and a bass all at the same time
Garret, you should check Dee-Ant-tony out in a band from the '90's called Kudu. They were AMAZING mix of jazz, soul, funk, electronica. Check out the track Surprise.
Great drummer!! Love Mars Volta and Omar's projects. I recommend Jimmy Chamberlain from The Smashing Pumpkins, his performance of Silverfuck is legendary, I GUARANTEE you would love it. Very jazz influenced drumming but heavy song.
I know you have a loooong backlog - if there's a chance, add Adam Jarvis (Misery Index; Pig Destroyer) to that backlog! "Misery Index - New Salem Drum Playthrough" can be found on youtube.
Maybe some love and a review for the dearly departed William Rieflin? He had a storied career with Ministry/Revco then REM, and King Crimson. He is practically a drum machine. A greater time keeper one will never find.
Wooow, my favorite song for my favorite artist ever (Omar Rodriguez Lopez) ! Please watch his Technoself projects, he plays drums and keyboards at the same time. I'd love to have your reaction to his playing in that other context. Deantoni is truly a one of a kind drummer. You should do other The Mars Volta drummers, Thomas Pridgen and Jon Theodore (now playing with Queens of the Stone Age).
Dirk (blast) Verbeuren! He's one of my favourite metal drummers, now with Megadeth, but I love his stuff with Soilwork. He's not as extreme or super technical as many you have done, but I love his playing. th-cam.com/video/PSrmsu7uQYM/w-d-xo.html Soilwork - Long Live the Misanthrope
Juan might be the best bass player ever, he always manages to bring order to all of this chaos.
Really hoping his recovery goes smoothly and we can get more Juan in our lives.
@@qazwsxbjioknmlp8046 Man he had a bike accident. He was in a coma for like a month and hes only just slowly recovering now.
@@qazwsxbjioknmlp8046 poor fella is learning to walk again
It's like Juan is there to keep the two dudes sane, and from going overdose of course.
That’s the one I really appreciated about Juan and JT. Thomas is an incredible drummer in his own right, but he added to the chaos instead of being the consistent heart beat of the band.
Juan will never return to TMV since Omar and Cedric don’t like him anymore 😭😭
Definitely a vid I'd like to request, but never thought anyone would've reacted. Thanks man
Hey man, just discovered your channel a few days ago and gotta say it's really helping my quarantine boredom haha thanks bud!
Thanks to the guy from Patreon for suggesting this.
My suggestion: Brian Chippendale from Lightning Bolt - Dead Cowboy live at TAICOCLUB'14
Thanks heaps for doing that one man, I didn't know if you would since it's not a super popular request. Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh shit, I used to watch this performance daily.
Love this song and everyone in the band.
That's my JAMMMM!!!! BROSKI.
Thanks for sharing that man! I'm a metalhead and haven't really heard much like that before. That was amazing. Going to have to listen to more!
You gotta check out This Town Needs Guns (TTNG)
Their drummer is Chris Collis and he is extremely original
Songs to check out would be:
Chinchilla, There’s No I in Time, and Triptych
Definitely, I love Chris!
Oxford represent
Yeah gotta say TTNG would be amazing for him to listen to.
Deantoni has a bunch of solo albums, he plays synth while playing drums, ive seen him play it live. I enjoy his work but i still think Jon Theodore is the iconic Mars Volta drummer.
This isn't The Mars Volta.
Jon Theodore and Thomas Pridgen are equally amazing but quite different
Jon Theodore gets to show his true skills in QoTSA
@@AureliusR I think he is fine in qotsa, but nah,he showed his true skills in the mars volta, his grooves are unreal.
@@AureliusR Yeah, I find his ghost notes don't come through so clearly in QoTSA, and he has to play very heavy handed so his incredible dynamics also don't come through. I haven't listened to the latest album a heap though tbh.

Woah, THE DandelionVolta? haven't seen that name in half a decade...
Glad you watched this. There is another with Deantoni and ORLG in St. Petersburg. A full show., I will find the link.
Chops....haha, awesome! Thanks for another good one, man. Love your reviews. Going to send that to a friend who'll really love to hear that. Take care man!
Absolute pioneers. This entire series of videos he released captured some of the most original music being performed at such a high level of musicianship.
K now just to check out (WIP) II !!!!!!!!!!
2:58 - my thoughts exactly.
Jimmy Chamberlin - Smashing Pumpkins -- Silverf*ck. And hell yes on one of the 50 million Omar projects. The Apocalypse Inside of an Orange is one hell of a ride.
Yes! A fellow Chamberlin fan!
React to Zach Hill in Hella playing Biblical Violence!! Shit’s insane and he has no double pedal!
Zach played on one of Omar's albums as well. Beast
@@un13555 two actually! Mantra Hiroshima and Cryptomnesia!
He did it!

Okay, I didn't know this and I am fucking impressed and mindblown right now. Holy shit.
Fuck I miss The Mars Volta. I can spend a day listening to their albums one after the other and get to the end and just want more. That's when I console myself with Omar's solo stuff.

Loved your reaction.
When he said "There's a lot of kids there." I thought the same thing. Then I realized in 2010 I would've been 20-21, so I would've been one of those kids at that show, lol! Time flies!
Fuck yes more stuff from Omar/Mars Volta
Track 2 is my favorite from this live show, with the chick with the X name. More structured, less wanky, still has cool drumming in it.
check all of omar's work with ximena - its timeless.
Hahaha! For the first half of the post I thought we were watching The Lamar Rodriguez-Lopez Band! Classic me! ;-)
Deantoni is a monster on drums.
makes me happy to see videos of juan playing bass. he is on a long road to recovery to function let alone play bass again.
New Ben Koller (Converge) drum cams! You should react to You Fail Me live in Moscow.
Axe to Fall seems like the more drum intensive record, You Fail Me's pretty straight forward, but good suggestion.
Judd Orsburn Something crazier does make sense, but I think it’s a good example of how Ben plays around a big consistent groove.
Axe to fall or other tracks from you fail me... but yes he should react to Ben Koller FOR SURE!!!!
“I need acid”. Gotta quit watching at work people think I’m laughing to myself 😂
"What do you want from me" you have convinced me to listen to Mars Volta next time I trip. There's not much else I *can* ask of you
deantoni has a sick unique style bro like staccato ambient stuff
that show influenced me massively (played in a Mars-esque prog band for many years). I wasn't actually a big fan of Parks with the Mars Volta, but he's a monster on these records and the live shows are superb.
Deantoni Parks solo stuff on “Technoself” is really cool as well.

Got a Battles vibe I have to watch this now!
Omar has a million solo albums. I recommend the earlier ones til about 2010 and his stuff with TMV. it's all very dense, trippy and insane. Lol
I like your reviews, man!

Has anyone suggested any of mike glozier's videos?
You have to check Larnell Lewis(Snarky Puppy drummer) playing Jazz Crimes with Joshua Redman. Such an amazing video!
Came for the Hemiola. Stayed for the facials..... wait that doesn't sound right.....

2:42 did it just happen again? Is this going to be a recurring theme?
Lol your description is spot on
G-man !!! Hope you are well ... Loved this one ! It doesn't have to be metal to be completely wack.
it is worth noting that not all the oRL band sounds like this. much of it is actually way more song orientated than what is presented here. also deantoni plays bass via keys ala the doors for much of the current oRL band stuff
there are several other songs from this same gig that are VERY different sounding. #2 on this gig is awesome!

Yep, there wasn't a head nod. But there was Omar straightening his glasses.
You need to check out more of The Mars Volta.

^ i second this Zach Hill request. A reaction to both his Death Grips AND Hella work (don't skip Hella!) would be great.
Juan Alderete, Omar Rodriguez and Deantoni, three beautiful players
It's like blossoming, or blooming, is that what you were trying to do with your hands? I got it!

You should watch Thomas Pridgen with The Mars Volta - completely different drummer, but insanely out there as well.
The Bedlam in Goliath was an insane album too. Did you ever get a chance to spin that?
