this was actually a drum track matt wrote start to finish then sent to tosin for "reworking into a song" and tosin was just like "nah ill just write over this exact thing." so this song technically IS about the drummer. Not disagreeing with you on tosin though. He is the mayyyyyyyyyyyyn!

I took a private lesson with JP Bouvet when he suddenly filled in for Matt Halpern on the Fall/Winter 2017 Periphery & AAL Tour. As I was one on one with JP, Garstka walked in the room, and was jamming to my groove I was playing. I nearly shit myself, but it was one of the coolest things to have a lesson with a God and to have another God walk into the room at the same time.

Matt graduated from Berklee and has a background in almost every style of music; funk, prog, afro-cuban, latin, jazz, gospel, metal, etc, which is why you hear that funkiness in his groove and pocket along with his crazy chops. He also runs in the same circles as all the "gospel chops" drummers, and draws influence from the best ones like Ronald Bruner Jr., Thomas Pridgen, Tony Royster Jr., etc. You were spot on with identifying the style (although none of those guys actually like to use that term). You were also correct about the almost "pyramid" style writing for this song, where the pattern "stacks" and goes over the bar line, taking several measures for it to come to completion before starting again. This is one of those songs where the drummer wrote the song first and then the guitarists added parts over it. Matt has a whole article about it in Modern Drummer I believe.

The dude did go to Berklee for primarily a gospel background, so they're definitely gospel chops, spot on

Thank you. It's hard to do in one viewing, which is how I like reactions to be...maybe I can do a post analysis after the initial react for some videos but I'll try to add more when I can. This one is particularly complex, I was grasping for something semi intelligent to say because I was so speechless about what just happened lol

    It's over 9000!!
I'd recommend looking up Morgan Sansous in Henker. Sadly, I don't think there are any drum cam clips on YT, but there's a medley of grooves under the poor title of "brutal death drummer.mp4". You should be able to find it by searching for "henker drummer" as well.
    Cheers!

I think you'd enjoy a video of Jamie St Merat from Ulcerate. He's got some sick live videos, Dead Oceans is favorite, and he always does a 10-15m video of him doing drum tracking before each album comes out. I think he's one of the most unique death metal drummers out there.

So there’s no drum cam footage of this song but you absolutely need to check out the song the art of dying by Gojira, it’s absolutely insane. Having your eyes broken by strobe lights and not being able to just watch the drummer is worth it to hear how insane the opening drum part is.
