  • Always Board Never Boring takes a deep dive into Deathwatch: Overkill, an out of production game from Games Workshop that he believes never really got the attention it deserved. In this video, we do a full review plus an overview of how to play. Eagle-eyed viewers may spot design elements that were recycled and modified for Blackstone Fortress and Space Marine Adventures.

    The introductory text of the DWOK manual is freakin fantastic! It got me instantly pumped to want to dive into the game. Excellent compelling story telling and presentation.

      A few more pages in. I think this is the most enjoyable game manual I have ever read already. I think I am about 1/10 through it. It does SUCH a fantastic job of combining rules with theme and setting. What a joy to read!
      It's similar to Space Hulk 3/4 edition but I think this one is better, in that it's more exciting right away.
      I think this book would be a fantastic gateway for a first time player being introduced to 40K.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

      It's a good manual. The whole game is really nicely presented. The game is a bit of an odd duck with how it plays, yet somehow it just all works really well. I hope you have a lot of fun with it.

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Bought mine in 2016. Still in sprues I hate to admit. But this year I made a resolution for myself to get more of my boardgame stuff painted. Overkill isn't currently being worked on, but it's competing for a spot later this year.
      That said it's competing with Space Hulk and Dreadfleet, so competition's stiff. I shall see what comes out top, haha.

      Always Board Never Boring It actually appeals to me as a sort of Space Hulk lite.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thematically, it's in the same wheelhouse as Space Hulk, but they do play completely differently. It's much faster, with space marines running and leaping everywhere in open spaces rather than trudging through narrow corridors. The marines are also much more powerful than Space Hulk's terminators.
      Because the heroes are all unique you have a lot more special abilities and weapon options at your disposal. Meanwhile, the genestealer player gets lots more choices regarding what to spawn, and what to hold back to use as gambits. If anything, both sides have a lot more to think about than they do in Space Hulk. Of course, Space Hulk will always be the better game!

      Super. I was told that this game is weak and never try it. I think i will try it next week :) Can i hope you reviev Betrayal at Calth and Burning of Prospero? Do titles from BaC matches that from Black Fortress?

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. It's well worth trying, but I think it's one of those games that people either love or hate, because it's a bit different and unusual. Definitely one to try before you buy. I'm thinking of occasionally revisiting some of these older games here on the channel, but I don't know when. In the meantime reviews for Prospero and Calth are on my blog.
      Oh, and no, the Calth tiles are oversized to allow three marines per space.

    I know I'm a little late, but I'd love to see a playthrough of this game, especially given your obvious love for it.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I learned the rules I tinkered with it solo. I think it really needs a genestealer player because of the secret card play.

    • @DANNYtheBOY11
      @DANNYtheBOY11 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't see it difficult to put in place at all. The enemy IA goes for the closest, then for marine with more wounds, then you decide; when the game says to lay down the ambush cards (example 5 on an hand of 7), you simply lay all 7 down instead, then you reveal them all as per the rules, at the end of GS movement phase. That's about it.
      You could also use tiles from other games such BSF or Necromunda (much better tiles!!) and have all the same dynamics more or less; I would use the classic WH blast template (3 or 5) for blast/rend rules; you could also use the range adopted in BSF, saying that 0-1 sq/hex is Assault, 2-3 sq/hex is Combat and 4+ sq/hex is Max range....

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DANNYtheBOY11 The way the game plays, it doesn't lend itself easily to this sort of AI for a number of reasons:
      1. Ambush cards are also gambit cards. A big part of the game for the genestealer is deciding whether to play a card to bring in reinforcements or play the cards as a dirty trick. The gambits are very important as the marines are tough and hard to beat in a fair fight. The gambits are held in secret and played based on triggers such as a marine entering a zone, so an AI can't really handle that.
      2. Spawning is limited by the miniatures you have, so you don't always want to play all of your cards as ambushes. For example, if you already have the primus on the board, it would be a waste to play another ambush card that spawns the primus - the card would simply by discarded.
      3. Positional play is essential to win. Where the models are actually standing within a zone is important as you can only move a miniature into a zone if there is physical space for the miniature's base to fit. This means a few genestealer units can block marines from moving by spacing out in a zone.
      4. Positional play is important for baiting marines, and trying to drag them out of position. There's no cover, so your tactics rely on making sure you are outside of the firing arcs, luring marines into positions for counterattacks, and spacing your models so they don't all get blown up with a blast weapon. Genestealer units that just run straight at marines will die horribly, and the marines will generally have a cake walk. Remember, the Deathwatch get two attack rounds per turn, but the genestealers move after the marines, so the genestealers need to have the ability to react to the marines and avoid devastating attacks.
      5. The game focuses on scenarios and the genestealers require different tactics to prevent the marines from completing their objectives.
      6. You can change boards, but you completely change the dynamic of the game. The game is all about a wide open space, leaping chasms, blocking movement with careful positional play, and trying to stay outside of range until you're ready to counterattack.
      I'm a big fan of playing games solo even if they aren't originally intended for it. You can play this game simply controlling both sides and doing your best to win, but you still lose something because you can't surprise yourself with the gambit cards or trick the marines into traps and that puts the cultists at a big disadvantage.

    • @DANNYtheBOY11
      @DANNYtheBOY11 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring (1) Of course Ambush cards only, no gambits (2) If it does not make any sense, you play the next one instead until you play the nr of cards of the mission (3) Not drastically important to me, I would not use original tiles anyway (4) Assigning iniative for each marine and type of enemy every turn and 2 actions each, no double attacks or such (5) More power from GN having same actions and maybe block the movement when models are adjacent may balance it (6) Maybe, but why not.
      Playing each side is something you can always do, but it's never the case for me. No fun at all. Cheers.
