  • In this video, we bring you the entire step-by-step process of a 4 cylinder crankshaft's machining.
Machining of a crankshaft is giving it its unique shape which helps it avoid deformation during the heat treatment.
In a nutshell, a crankshaft is the backbone of an engine. It is responsible for the operation of an engine and the conversion of a linear motion to rotational motion.

I have watched the entire length of the video why?..because I love my profession. I am a mechanical engineer, what memories to see those beautiful machines, lathes, milling machines, grinding machines ... I graduated from technical college and we were taught to use those beautiful machines ... today by the advancement of technology everything is CNC but the one who learned to make any mechanical part with those beautiful machines MY RESPECT.

The best feeling after leaving the mechanical workshop of the school was to see you dirty hands, dirty work clothes, because you knew you had done an excellent job. my respects to the penultimate gentleman who made the process of rectification 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 works smoking a snuff ... that means that he loves his profession and knows what he is doing and is so much confidence that he smokes a snuff ....

Like you, I too watched the video in full length..but the reason is not like you (I'm not an engineer) ! I don't know why I like this type of mechanical activities and the people and the way they do it. And more I see..more respectful I become to the doers! But..above all, I become numb, whenever I think about the Inventors of the machines Centuries before 🤔✌

    BTW, 40:38 - That's something over a 4" journal, meaning that's a hell of a big I-4; likely a low-speed Deisel.
    1:49 - Neat chip guard.
2:10 - Doesn't waste time getting the hard skin off.
    7:02 - Eyeball indicator
14:04 - McMaster doesn't offer that chip guard!
19:58 - Looks like some mis-indexing on that #2 rod journal.
21:40 - That drill jig looks to have several guide holes for the various journals.
40:50 - No rod journal grinding shown.
45:20 - Hat's off! Given what you have available, it's hard to imagine a better result.
45:50 - The only automated process is strapping!
"Freedom's Forge" (Herman) made it clear that the production rates required for the Allies' overwhelming materiel advantage in WWII was due to advances in machine tool design, allowing relatively unskilled labor to produce a 'thing' in huge quantities with little training. By comparison, these guys are highly skilled, probably years of apprenticeship, making use of crude machine tools to produce functioning IC engine parts. Slowly and expensively, regardless of their pay and even lacking basic safety gear. Take a look at any of the YT CNC crank machining vids; this would take perhaps 5 minutes with a per-unit pro-rated labor charge of a buck and a half. These guys are making the most of the plant they have; sweat equity.

No matter if they did their best work on it, i would NEVER use a crankshaft like that in any engine i own, or rebuild. You will NEVER get a broken crankshaft to be true, it will never hold up to a new one. You're better just to condemn a broken crankshaft & get a new one.
