  • It's true! I dropped my Lionel Vision Line Big Boy 4014 steam locomotive on the floor. But fear not! In this video, we are going to fix it and make it all better.
    Enjoy!

      Oh man, it almost always happens eventually to us all and I always fear the day that I do. I had a couple bad drops before but thankfully they were far and few between over the past 10 years and only 1 resulted in serious damage. The rest was just some slight scuffing I can't even notice until I remember.

      I know the feeling of clumsiness, and it's evil twin, forgetfulness (only diff is one's physical and the other is mental). It fills me with feelings of deep shame, because it's been a lifelong demon that causes me to drop things, then maims me with shame ("You utterly worthless animal", etc.). And there's no end to it. But then you redeemed it by making this video. I redeem my clumsiness as much as I can by removing "hazards to navigation" (i.e. kicking pinecones off the sidewalk). Only God knows how many people never tripped as a result. Kudos to you Chris! Keep on trainin'! Idea, perhaps make that trestle able to be hand lifted out of the way so you don't have to walk under it any more.@@RBPTrains

    I started O-scale back in 2007 and this happened about 15 years ago. I had a dash 8(only about a 3rd the price of a Big Boy) go off the edge of the layout and break in to several pieces(I was not in a frame of mind then to count the pieces) I remember feeling about 15 emotions at once. I assure you none of them were embarassment. After what seemed like an eternity, I might have uttered a couple cuss words. That was a long time ago and I have never made that mistake again. It happens to the best of us. I am glad everything is OK, Chris. Thanks for being brave enough to share this video

      I'm so sorry about your engine. I was a little kid when I fell down after tripping over a snow bank. I was holding my battery powered engine in my left hand and when I fell I heard a horrible SNAP! from the engine. I looked at my engine and noticed that the cow catcher snapped right off of my engine and I cried hard holding it and the broken cow catcher. I was extremely upset about the loss of my engine. I was working on my Lionel American Flyer Challenger, trying to resolve a control issue. All at once, it decided to rocket off my layout at full speed. Before I could stop it, it launched about EIGHT feet away from my layout, on to hard floors. Amazingly, nothing was broken. The tender separated from the engine when it landed. Two sets of wheels came loose from the tender. That is the only harm my flying Flyer experienced. I consider myself darn lucky!

    Several years ago I was running a brand new Sunset 3rd Rail C&O Greenbrier on a friends layout. As it approached the end of a straightaway the screw holding the eccentric and piston rods on the engineers side backed out. The piston rod swung around, dug in and flipped the engine over on its side. Had that screw dropped out a few feet further the engine would have taken a 4 foot drop to the concrete floor. Needless to say all the parts were reassembled and every fastener on the running gear was checked for tightness. Good you were able to fix the pilot and valve gear on the Big Boy and get it running again. Good to see you posting again.

    Even though I do HO and not O, I've had similar experience with locomotives and rolling stock taking a ride to the floor, its just one of those things, unfortunately! What I was shocked by, was how little damage was done and how relatively simple it was to replace the broken parts on that locomotive! I know Lionel gets dunked on for having incredibly expensive trains, but credit to them for building an absolute tank of a locomotive despite the level of detail, and making it easy to replace the broken parts.

    My biggest model train mistake……..well, just yesterday I dropped one of my 50s American flyer passenger cars, the red mail type with the black arm. It was dropped from around 4 feet off a shelf onto HARDWOOD FLOOR!!! Massive crack down the side of the car and chips out of other spots by the bottom of the shell, the screws holding the shell on were also ripped out of the frame.

    I am happy to see that the damage was so minor. My previous layout was also in a with a carpeted floor and I am sure that my American Flyer K5 model mostly survived to pilot first dives off that layout. The only damage was where a bar at the back of the cab, to which the tender draw bar attaches, became disconnected from its' anchor points. Before I got the locomotive, a previous owner had had to reattach that bar. Some JB Weld made the reconnection - twice.

    Thank goodness for the carpet. My worst mistake, or was it just bad luck, was when I set up an 054 loop around the Christmas tree so I could show my niece and nephew my premier 4501 model. I played the PSA announcements and my dachshund decided to play godzilla and lunged herself at the locomotive, derailing it. Had it been running there would have been damage, not to mention a visit to the vet. So, I only run my postwar Lionel models now that and both dogs don't mind the air whistle

    We use to have our train set on the landing on a set of boards temporarily, a few years back. We also had a broken transformer that was set to full speed either forward, backward or static in neutral. And I recently got a flying Scotsman for my birthday. I told my brother he isn’t allowed to use my train in the case he put it on the track with said transformer. About 6 maybe 7 weeks old and my younger brother put it on the track early in the morning (when we weren’t allowed too) and all of a sudden a huge crash and my brother crying. My Scotsman went down the stairs. Thankfully it survived. Nothing was broken. But a little scuff on the side that I cannot get rid of. I haven’t tried nor do I wish too.

    I am very sorry that you dropped your engine. I'm glad you were able to fix it. One time I had left my Bachmann n scale DCC sound 4-6-4 j3a Hudson on my desk. I had a friend over to run some trains on my layout that day. My friend who was not paying attention, bumped into the locomotive sitting on the desk and it feel to the floor. The engines valve gear was damaged beyond repair and had to be replaced. Some of the delicately fitted separate details were totaled and had to be replaced as well, and the paint along the handrails was completely scratch up 😟. Fortunately, I was able to fix most of the damage on the engine (because the Bachmann parts website is amazing) and it is back up and running on my train layout. It is safe to say that I am never leaving trains on my desk when that friend is at my place!

    Ugh huh, sounds to me like someone was needing an excuse to buy a new one. All kidding aside, sorry you had to experience such a tramatic event. On the other hand, your reenactment is worthy of an academy award. I actually could feel your pain and got a little choked up and shed a tear. Your hand roll technique is flawless and I'm amazed how you can pull it off to perfection each time. Although I had a similar situation, it was nowhere near the level of potential loss. I had just bought a complete Marx 1095 ABA SantaFe El Capitan E-7 passenger set with diesel roar feature, in perfect condition no less, with all the original parts still intact and freshly serviced and I had it on the track powered by my recent acquisition of a KW transformer. You know the ones with the whacky throttles. Well you guessed it. I promptly launched it off my table into a head on collision with a wall onto the floor below and cracked the cab down the middle. Oddly enough all the original steps and horns were still intact and the diesel roar feature was actually more convincing. Sadly everyone on board parished and yet the trip started out with such high hopes and expectations knowing what a great deal I had just gotten. Wow! What a dumb bass. I beat myself up for month after that one. I still hate myself just a little each time thinking about it. Hope all is well.
    Happy rails

      The KW is an interesting transformer, with the control set-up. The TW is also goofy, with the controls operating in reverse, compared to the other Lionel transformers. I've accidentally sped-up quite a few trains, derailing them on a curve. I replaced it with one of my ZW's. It and my KW will now be relegated switching duty in my yard and industrial areas. Live and learn.

    • @DRCRailroard
      @DRCRailroard 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@johnandrus3901Hey John. Thanks, the TW isn't one I'm familiar with. Actually the KW's throttles both rotate the same direction for fast and slow. It's just not a good idea to operate them simultaneously ambidextrously. I have a ZW, KW, 2 CW-80-S and a 1033 all phased together. The 1033 is another problem child that doesn't play well with others when phased using both the variable and fixed voltage settings requiring it to be wired out of phase to be in phase with the others. A real head scratcher. It wasn't an issue until I used the fixed voltage settings to power my switches independent of track power from the 1033.

    • @johnandrus3901
      @johnandrus3901 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DRCRailroard The TW has the throttle on the right, like the 1033, but it is reversed, so it operates backwards from other, smaller, transformers. It is a 175 watt transformer and a very good unit.

    At least the galloping sausage is still kicking. As for my biggest flop in o gauge, playing with a postwar nw2 like it’s a Thomas toy and letting it fall from the second bed bunk to the floor (I only found a matching shell last year) for those who know their postwar locomotives, it was the Seaboard 601, and the closest matching shell I could find was the 602 (which I decided to change the last digit to keep it accurate to the original one that completely died when it hit the bedroom floor)

    Glad to see you were able to repair the Big Boy. I will have to say my incident is probably cant be repaired though😭
    Worst train incident: My grandfather gifted me with his grey 763e with coal piled tender a couple years back before he passed. At the time I had no idea what I had and well I didn't pack then tender(that I now know is the rare grey coal piled version) very well to where I packed it with just a paper towel separating it and the metal tracks. The tracks shifted during transport and made chips on both sides of the tender making it look like someone stabbed the thing or shot it with bbs. The locomotive received some damage as well but not as severe. Looking back I wish I packed it with more care because it is now biting me in the butt. I just have to live with an engine that could be worth an extra 1000 dollars but was ruined by ignorance but it will always have sentimental value to me. Luckily the engine runs but the old wires connecting the rollers in the tender are beginning to disintegrate. If anyone would care to help me make a decision either to try and find extra parts to fix on the locomotive(cowcatcher, some springs) or if its worth it to try and get the tender restored that would be great. The lesson learned from this is to Be Very Careful with your trains because you may never know what value it may have.

    I was weathering one of my engines. After airbrushing, I hit the locomotive with a clear coat, but the button of the can was stuck on the down position, causing uncontrolled clear coat spraying everywhere. The paint on the engine started running off, and the decals on the engine started to wrinkle due to excess clear coat. I wasn't too happy with this happening on an Athearn Genesis locomotive...

    As someone who is invested pretty heavily into the RC car world. Who also just recently got their first lionel train. I am pretty surprised to see that trains mostly just use Philips head screws... RC cars mostly use hex screws/bolts. If an RC car has Phillips heads. It's usually considered toy grade. Hex heads are considered hobby grade... I would have thought it would be the same in the train hobby... But it's not. That's interesting to me...

    When I was a early teenager, I launched my MPC FARR Union Pacific Berk off of the table by accident. The wire slipped from under the Variable voltage post of my transformer, and laid against the constant voltage post. The locomotive hit the turn and sailed off of the table. Surprisingly, not a whole lot of damage. The pilot was bent downward a little. But that was really all that happened. And this thing fell a good 3 feet onto a hard basement floor. But, those berks were leftover tooling from postwar models. So they were kind of bulletproof and really stout.
    That being said. Years later, I worked in a model train shop for years, doing repairs on all sorts of trains. People would be surprised at just how modular the new ones are. They look a lot more intimidating to work on than they actually are. Mechanically or electronically.

    Even though I’m mostly an N scale train person, it’s no surprise some have broken on me. But what ever part needs replacing, there manufacturer has parts for it to purchase on its website. And boy oh boy did that Lionel Visionline 3 rail O scale Big Boy smoke up your train room after some runs with its fresh new smoking units. I hope the smoke alarm doesn’t go off. Also since I’m more into little N scale, I recently purchased an N scale model of Big Boy 4014 from Broadway Limited. And Broadway made history as it’s the first ever N scale steam engine that smokes! They also came out with N&W Y6bs and Reading T1 Northerns. They’re equipped with smoking units too. Eventually they’ll have Challenger’s and Santa Fe Northerners like 3751. All smoke equipped. However they’re not synchronized smoking units. There sooth smoking units like Athearn had in there HO steam engines. Now that I have the proper smoke fluid in possession, just need to wait for these N scale steam engines to get to me. I hope for future N scale releases BLI does the N&W Js and the GS-4s like they recently did in HO.

    My worst mistake as a modeler was when I rear ended a passenger train (it uncoupled from its self) and DESTROYED the rear end of the observation. Still not sure how as it wasn't going too fast. It damaged the chassis and the shell, couldn't run the observation anymore as the spot the rear truck mounted broke off. Took me 5 years to find a new chassis for a good price. Not too bad but it was my first passenger car I ever got.

    I'm OK with Lionel stuff, but i'm a "2 rail" modeler so the brand is off my radar completely. I don't think I ever dropped a train, but i do had some catastrophic derails, and fall-offs, even some "friend related" damages. My Class 119 is still in a "written off" status do to the broken plow with the coupling that is no longer available in the parts order (2015 release! so WHAT?), after I left it at my workplace to pull the holyday candy-train, and my coworkers were curios how fast it can go, with a heavy train (on a R2 layout), can't even glue it, do its a weight bearing moving part.
    Tough sometimes I can get damaged locos for cheap on ebay that i can easily fix, and some cosmetic damages i can fix without trying to get original spare parts (like: lamps, bells, some pipes, horn...) and i'm good with painting and weathering as an alternative.

    1. Broke several different bachmann models....those being the chattanooga, 2378 2-8-2 mikado, Bethlehem Steel 0-6-0, BNSF 3001, and UP 4433.
    2. Lost the screw to my Tyco 4-6-0 for it to run again (the screw was loose when it came in the mail, but i didn't mind. as long as the locomotive was fine, i was fine.)
    3. Dropped my O scale alaskan 0-4-0 in 2019 and it somewhat looked like it survived...until i tried running it in 2022 and it didn't make any noise
    4. Lost my hallmark greatest railroad model of a J class (the tender still remains)
    Please acknowledge, for 1, 3, and 4 i was VERY YOUNG, so i had no idea how to properly handle model trains.

The thing is it didn't land on the carpet it landed corner first onto a cast iron weight!!! All that happened the door went inside the car which was an easy fix and a small crack) and the other accident was when I was running my n scale trains (more specifically the big boy which is an odd coincidence) and my Kato switch derailed the pilot wheels causing a short circuit that fried my Bachman ez dcc controller
