things i learnt from 1st cupping: - anyone who is not participating will not understand the slurp and will mock you - all characteristics of coffee change as the temperature decreases over time - the coffee isn't supposed to be hot the whole time - comparison is key, this enables so much more to be experienced - i initially thought "what is wrong with E" but as i went through the process i found myself thinking "i can see how this would appeal to someone" - if you say honey, i taste honey (thanks brain) - i wish i could do this more with like minded people IRL - thank you James for putting your time and effort into coffee
I put this on in the background, barely audible, because the hoff has a calming effect on me. It's like working with a cool uncle bumbling around in the background talking to your mum about sophisticated upper middle class things. Half expecting someone to pop in and ask me if I want a glass of rose or a quiche.
My kit got here a few days late. But I've just finished the full tasting. It was still a super enjoyable experience. I love coffee but have never done a tasting. Thank you for demystifying the process, and bring such positivity and joy to speciality coffee.

I've just found James Hoffman and his coffee videos, so I missed the actual tasting, but I loved watching it in 2021! This made me feel so good! Thank you!!!
Lesson learned: next time I do cupping I will make really small cups. The coffees were too delicious and I didn't want them to go to waste; now I have headache from caffein overdose.
Me and my mum stopped slurping and started drinking them straight from the cup and we're now up to our eyeballs in caffeine. We might need to stick on The Lord of The Rings Trilogy to see us through the night! 😵
I missed out of purchasing the kit as it was first sold out and then I did not think it would get to the USA before the event. But I tuned in and what a wonderful experience it was to follow James through a cupping. I ABSOLUTLY hope that this can be recreated, if not to set a record, but rather with a sampling of coffees and have the ability walk through a cupping with James as the guide. Now i want to have those coffees in front of me to experience the tasting along with him and gain the real experience of having the difference in acidity between A and B and E so that I can help to develop my tasting and appreciate the so many differences of premium coffee available today. Glad to make a donation sit and thanks so much for the education

James Hoffman casually raising $37,000 by slurping coffee. That's pretty amazing. It was really interesting to watch too, even though I didn't manage to snag a tasting kit in time. Boy those things sell out fast!

I’m right with you on E, B was my winner, today at least. One of my most memorable coffee experience was in Hungary many years ago, at one of those street kiosks which sells shots (or jolts) of coffee in what looked like plastic medicine cups; it was served with a cube of sugar which could only be dissolved in the coffee, not stirred as that would break the meniscus which was the only thing keeping the coffee from spilling over. It was strong like a drug! Pease tell me those kiosks still exist. As I remember, Hungary consumes more coffee per person than anywhere else in Europe.
Super cool to have connected virtually with everyone taking part worldwide! As always, it was a fun and learning experience, thank you James and team! Wise decision on 'official' record, knowing is good enough for me. Now off to figure out how to donate ...
It's my first time doing the cupping by myself and boy! , i had so much fun! So happy that my sensory skills has improved a bit! Got surprised that the outcome of what I've tasted got maybe around 70% the same with james. 🤗☕🧡 Do it again!!
Really appreciate you. I marvel at how people are willing to tolerate a mountain of challenges for the sake of others, including the intimidation factor. I hope you can grasp your influence is larger than coffee.
I am so glad James put a robusta in the mix for a comparison. I got a great laugh when he revealed it. It tasted and smelled to me like toasted rice. I thought it was completely dreadful as a (black) coffee, but it definitely added to the experience!! This tasting is making me think that Ethiopia is one of my favorite regions, and that I prefer natural to washed (for Ethiopian coffees at least). I guess its lame to be like most other coffee nerds in that regard (thinking Ethiopia is my favorite region), but it is what it is.

Wow, never thought that I would watch this episode entirely without even participating, but this is just great to learn from and fun at the same time! Thanks James.
Just to say thank you to all involved in setting this up, really enjoyed taking part. Without a spoiler, for today, it is fair to say I wouldn't have got to try some of those coffees because the description would put me off. I certainly didn't, like one of them. All I could taste was....
Thank you for an educational stream. I may have to get a fancy spoon. You’ve educated me enough to dump Keurig and move to pour over. I’ve been drinking coffee for 45 year, but feel like I’ve started over.
Got my kit this morning and just finished the tasting. This was so fun. Absolutely worth the price of admission, thanks so much James and the Square Mile team.
i finally just done the tasting ( yes i know, two weeks late! kit got here on time, just got caught up with other stuff =( ). just wanted to say thank you to james and the whole team for putting this together an giving me my first ever tasting experience! it was so interesting to have them all here to compare and figure out more about what i like and don't like and why. also highly appreciated james sharing his tasting notes afterwards! would love to join into a live event someday if you ever find your way to the netherlands! thank you thank you

Thank you so much for this experience - i just did the cupping today as i got my kit today and although i wasn't live with the whole event, watching the video and doing the cupping at the same time was huge fun - even my wife who doesn't drink or like coffee tasted all of them and had her own scoresheet and likewise enjoyed it very much. Your Team and You are awesome - thanks so much for this fun event!!!
I received my kit four days late (prairie Canada), but I was too busy that day to participate anyway. Replayed it today and the experience was just as enjoyable. Really fun, interesting and educational to participate.
@JamesHoffman Thank you for the experience. Really learned something and is always a pleasure listening you speak about coffee. Cheers from Portugal and i’m ordering some D from Square Mile
Kit just arrived and watched the tasting! Felt like we were there on the day though! Absolutely loved the experience and learnt a lot. Thank-you from Australia. Love your work, keep it up :)
Thank you James and everyone who put this together. I can't imagine how much work you guys must have put in. I watched this in time lapse in Hong Kong because drinking coffee mid-night isn't ideal. But I have an amazing experience and I even coerced my family to do it with me together. We all loved ABC and hated D and E. I can definitely see the appeal of D, and kinda see E in a milk drink. It's such an eye opening event!
My dad: E is so empty and devoid of taste. It doesn't taste like coffee. Me: But this what normal coffee you get outside tastes like! It's what YOU drink everyday!
Just wanted to tell you how great the stream was. I always enjoy listening to you talking about the taste of coffee. But now I was able to take the exact sip of coffee you took and get the same taste and then try to identify the flavors you talk about. This took it to a whole new level and it was a lot more immersive in a way. It was a very great experience and I'm very happy that I could participate.
Thank you James for this amazing experience! I’m grateful to say I participated in the first cupping, but this one was even better. Thanks to everyone at Square Mile who made this possible!
This was delightful. I was sad I couldn’t do the tasting in real time due to work but I enjoyed doing the tasting after the fact none the less. This tasting definitely reaffirmed everything I know about my coffee tastes. D was my immediate favorite and I’m a sucker for naturals and Ethiopian coffees. E tasted very much like a coffee Barley tea. While I like barley tea, I did not enjoy it but it was fun to try!
@ 1:11:16 you just explained why my good pourover coffee, with my favorite coffee creamer, tasted worse than instant with the same creamer. I guess if I want the taste of coffee with creamer, I will use instant coffee.
Literally my idea of a relaxing night is just listening to lofi jazz christmas music in september, waiting for my nails to dry and watching james hoffman
you touched on this and I don't know if anyone commented in reply to making this an annual thing but here's my idea, even before this started- Do 3 or 4 separate coffee tastings for different time zones. Trying to pick one time for everyone all over the world obviously has it's difficulties. Doing it this way, say one in Asia one week, one in North America the next, one in the UK time zone the week later, etc. This would hopefully also make logistics easier.
Greetings from Canada! Had a great time, but the coffee arrived 10 days late. Still had a massively enjoyable experience, even if we couldn't join you live. Just wanted to provide feedback since the link in the description was removed. Thanks again!
That was fun! :) A thing you could improve: We can't hear you while we are grinding. So, after you told us to start grinding, you apparently explained a bit, but we couldn't hear you over the grinding. I think it would be better to it something like this: "you got 20 minutes to grind now, I will start a bit later because my grinder is very fast, but if you hand grind, you should start now. We will do a bit of small talk until then, but you won't miss out on any key inputs". The whole being behind thing was a bit stressful, so we just paused the stream until we were finished grinding and could do the steps 1:1 with you, which was MUCH more enjoyable than trying to catch up with you. It was a really fun experience! :)

Did my tasting in the evening here in California. Loved B and even picked out the region. E was a wonderful experience and couldn't stop thinking about it from opening the bag to tasting. I even got to share someone that has never done a tasting before.
Thank you Mr Hoffman for doing this and to your amazing team for organizing this. I'm from the Philippines and would like to have an opportunity to participate in a similar event, hopefully soon. I think there are lots of people here and around the region who would enjoy it too. Thank you also to the donors for their unselfish contribution to an industry that helps people wake up in the morning. Have a great day.
Thanks from Chile! Learned a lot and had fun, best experience ever tasting coffee. My winner is between E (would be my morning-to-go coffee) and C (quite more fancier, for me at least).
Thanks for doing this. I loved the last one, but this one was special for me because due to COVID I got to do it with my family and I think they understood why I'm into specialty coffee!
I would just like to echo everyone here in chat by saying thank you for putting so much time and effort towards this enjoyable and eye-opening experience. Hopefully you decide to do this again next year.
This was Awesome to watch as I am a Scotch whisky collector and it is interesting that we do roughly the same when sampling whiskies (except for the slurping) but we also look for mouth feel and the smells and flavors that we can find in a whisky. Thanks to this channel I have been buying way more coffee and less whisky (Something is wrong...lol) Big Thumbs up James.
Enjoyed the channel all year, looking forward to next year! You'll be happy to know I brewed the blood orange hefeweizen myself with your suggested reduction in extract and it turned out great.
Great job James, we really enjoyed that! 'I really like the contrast between opinions. Some have expressed they love D while I myself find it to taste of spoiled fruit and vomit. Pretty harsh I know, but giving us the variety you did, allows us to see the differences in production, region and altitude. Can’t wait till next year to break another record.
Just received my kit today and just finished cupping and it's now about 10PM. Looks like I won't be sleeping tonight 😂 Thanks for the experience, James! Very educational.
I hated the smell of E at first. Thought it was awful. Didn't like the flavor at first. But as it cooled I enjoyed it more and more. And now 3 weeks later I brewed a pour over with the extra beans and it is delicious. Love trying a new coffee and something so different from the rest. Thanks James!
I only came across your channel the other day and have been binge watching your videos. I love them. I hope you will do another coffee tasting, would love to do it.
Thank you for this! I followed along after the fact (accidentally slept through the livestream) and had a tremendously instructive experience. I think my history with coffee might be weird, since I really only started drinking coffee in college at specialty coffee shops, so E for me was not something I'd had experience with before. I immediately thought it tasted like roasted green tea, which I don't actually like but in this coffee as a flavour note was actually really pleasant? Absolutely repulsed by D at first but when you talked about your notes it became more interesting and informative even though I was still not a fan. The opportunity to compare between coffees specifically chosen to be illustrative of some of the differences possible was very valuable to me, thanks again for putting this together.
I realized from this cupping that I spent too much time trying to figure out tasting notes and not enough time figuring out why I like the coffees. What about the coffees that made me enjoy them. It was a great experience learning this stuff and I'll be cupping these coffee's with the leftovers again to decide those things!
Well I got to watch and we'll see how long it takes for my kit to arrive. Saved the video I hope correctly so I can use it to guide me while enjoying my kit. Many thanks James.
I didn't get mine either. Next time around it would be nice for the coffee to be available more than 2 weeks in advance so those of us not living in USA/Canada/Europe could participate.
Realised this morning that I’d missed the live event ☹️ On the plus side I can now tune in with my tasting kit and use the pause button to make sure time doesn’t run away with me.
Had this in my cart, got busy, forgot about it came back and it was sold out :( Definitely looked like a lot of fun. Won't make the same mistake next time.....

Got my kit this morning and just finished the tasting. This was so fun. Absolutely worth the price of admission, thanks so much James and the Square Mile team.
i finally just done the tasting ( yes i know, two weeks late! kit got here on time, just got caught up with other stuff =( ). just wanted to say thank you to james and the whole team for putting this together an giving me my first ever tasting experience! it was so interesting to have them all here to compare and figure out more about what i like and don't like and why. also highly appreciated james sharing his tasting notes afterwards! would love to join into a live event someday if you ever find your way to the netherlands! thank you thank you
This great. Had fun and loved trying different coffees. Cant wait to do it again
Hey 🤍💚✔ I recently started my youtube channel about Coffee☕ : Plantation, Storage, Roasting, Grinding, reviews, how to make the best coffee for yourself or your customers, Tips, and more..., ✨.And I would love it if you support me ❤❤ Thank you for all these pieces of information
This was so much fun James! Thanks to you and everyone who worked so hard to make it happen. I learned a lot about what I like and why, so cool!
I received my kit four days late (prairie Canada), but I was too busy that day to participate anyway. Replayed it today and the experience was just as enjoyable. Really fun, interesting and educational to participate.
Best livestream I've ever watched.(even if I'm just watching the post-recording)
Informative, delightful, and inspiring. Thank you, James!
I want a bag of that E beans! Love that as a change of pace.
And thank you James and the Square Mile team for organising such a big event!
E makes a great good tasting Espresso
Amine E. Is that so? I don’t have an espresso machine, but I will try to use the E beans in a moka pot.
Felix Wong yes I enjoyed the Cup, it s worth a try in the mokka pot, I guess it ll be a nice Coffein Kick
Thank you James, thoroughly enjoyed the tasting and learned a lot. Thanks too to all who worked on it with you 👍
Just wanted to tell you how great the stream was.
Absolutely loved this. Great learning moment and very fun.
I love coffee E. Tastes like roasted brown rice tea, common in Japan and Korea :)
Stream starts at 3:29, for anyone watching this later.
It was an amazing cupping! Thank you Square Mile for doing this!
A warm hug from Russia-Canada.
you touched on this and I don't know if anyone commented in reply to making this an annual thing but here's my idea, even before this started-
Do 3 or 4 separate coffee tastings for different time zones.
JAMES: “I always make a mess... it’s like a requirement”
ME: I feel you 🤣

If you didn't make a mess did you even do it?
Ryan O'Leary haha well, I can’t agree more
Did my tasting in the evening here in California.
This was amazing, thank you!
I would just like to echo everyone here in chat by saying thank you for putting so much time and effort towards this enjoyable and eye-opening experience. Hopefully you decide to do this again next year.
I just love hearing how James talks... its so calming to me. 😊
thank you for this experience! I’m happy to have one of my favourites from the table on the way from my International Coffee Day order!
That was awesome, a lot of fun. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers !!! 🎈👍💗✌😜👀💪😷🎈
Thanks, James! This was a whole lot of fun!
While I didn't participate this year, the video/replay was still very enjoyable. Thanks James, and hope y'all do this again!
Looks like I won't be sleeping tonight 😂
Thanks for the experience, James! Very educational.
I got 2 bags of A and no B but still enjoyed the experience, thank you
I hated the smell of E at first.
31:55 The most satisfying sound ever.
Thanks James, I just now did it while watching the video here in the US. Really cool experience!
petition to name the griffin "slurpy"
Or maybe “Hhsssssstttt!!!”
I do live in Canada and all mail service and even couriers are much slower this year.
@@teddvidler6830 COVID probably didn't help.
This was a total blast James - many thanks for running this.
That grinder was the most amazing satisfying noise ever.
Realised this morning that I’d missed the live event ☹️
On the plus side I can now tune in with my tasting kit and use the pause button to make sure time doesn’t run away with me.
That was very fun and educational. Thank you for putting this together.
Loved this! Bummed our coffees didn’t come in time but looking forward to tasting!
Had this in my cart, got busy, forgot about it came back and it was sold out :( Definitely looked like a lot of fun. Won't make the same mistake next time.....

that really blown up my speakers.. i really enjoy it
I can't wait until you do this again - I look forward to being a part of this tasting! What a great educational opportunity!
This was fun, even after the fact - I received the kit on Friday, but didn't get to participate live.
Thank you for organizing this very educational event.
