School papers tip: My parents started a tradition with their grandkids to have a bonfire at the end of the school year and burn their papers from school. It helps my daughter let go of them so much easier because its a fun event.

Not a great idea for German schools cause sometimes the teachers want all the papers etc from the school years before so it's best to keep school stuff for 3-4 years, especially in middle school.

@@jasminkln that is really interesting. No American school teacher has the time to look at students work from 1 grade ago, much less 2 or 3 grades ago, with the exception of major essays and science reports I suppose.

I think it's fun to take a picture of the kid holding their drawing/ painting or craft. They often are proud, and like showing what they did. It's fun to catch that in the photo. In my opinion it's more fun to both see the kid and the artwork together, than the artwork only. You often can declutter the things they crated after a while, or if it breaks. Then it's fun to keep the photo of the proud and happy kid. 😊

Your "cluttered" house is already 100 times better than any goal I set for decluttering mine.
The most powerful lesson though, was seeing your wedding picture in the "letting go" pile. I have a lot to learn from you, and will make a point of going through every video you have on the subject.
I have stuff accumulated for decades.. Decluttering will take a lot of effort emotionally and physically, as well as time, but I KNOW it is what I need do to set myself FREE. Thank you for your work.

Something amazing is the longer I’ve been decluttering, certain things I thought I’d never get rid of start to become less importantly me, and then I let them go! Currently though, getting rid of clothing has been tough for me.

We boil a full kettle of water, even for 1 cup, and then the balance of the hot water goes in a thermo jug for the next person who wants a cup of tea or coffee. That way the kettle isn't being boiled too often.

Thank you for a fruitful decluttering session! After Divorce, it was much needed! I was gone 7 weeks and anything he could mess up he did! Water in liquor, honey poured in between boxes of pasta! I tackled while I listened to you! I did major decluttering in 2015 and sold what was In a storage unit!!! Was able to get a new pare of glasses to see with!!! My clothes need a small over haul and most all is hanging or folded neatly in drawers. I am getting a cat in a few weeks after she gets cares at the animal shelter! So I'm doing my best to organize yarn which is not out of control. I'm knitting a cat mat for her kennel! I'm retired and love being at home but want a small companion and she will be so much fun! I love your videos! Keep encouraging us to do well for ourselves and not someone else!!!

I love how you (and your in-laws) go about gifts that no longer serve you or aren't as useful as you thought they would be and just give them back without any hard feelings. All of my children are grown with families of their own. I retired and sold my home and decluttered my entire hone. I bought a box for each of my children and put only the very special things and made each one a scrapbook. I gave them to them last Christmas. They were so thrilled! We went through their items and shared our memories. I think this was made it special because they just have a fancy box of memories instead of a bunch of boxes and paperwork

    • @Katy_living_simply
      @Katy_living_simply 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ask your kids about the pieces you have in them, if they are not special now they definitely won't be special in the future. We grew up as a minimalist family of 8. Moving constantly. So for us we didn't have alot of space or opportunity to accumulate things. Which has been such a blessing in my life. When my mother moved back to her home country she gave me a small ziploc bag of childhood pics (20ish) and a stack of my report cards and multiple awards. That's all I had and now I only kept about 1/2 the pics and thats it. Im super happy I don't have to be burdened with so much stuff from the past. We have a large family and memories are always shared. So I don't feel any loss.

🚪 Again, you rock Marissa!! I’ve been living “minimalistically” at our cabin in the woods. We had to come in to the city for some appointments, including my hair donation/cut, and the house just seems too much! We’ll be back here in a couple of months. I’ll save this video to watch again then. I know that I will be getting rid of so much more at that time. I find myself, as I go sleep in the cabin, thinking of the many things back home in my house, that I can get rid of. Thanks to you, I feel truly motivated. I love your videos so much!! Your channel is my favorite. I can definitely relate to being emotionally attached to things. The hardest items to let go of are items of my only son. I sadly can't have any more children due to health reasons so I think it's triggering me to hold on even more to anything that I remembered him wearing, playing with, or things that he made. At the same time, I totally know that all of this "stuff" is keeping me from what is really important, making memories and spending time with the people I love. I am constantly shuffling stuff here and there and losing things...causing obvious STRESS!! My goal is to become a minimalist and I like that you are totally real about where you started and where you are now and your whole journey...that it isn't going to be easy but it's going to be worth it!

You totally motivated me to do a pass through my house, as it had been awhile. I was able to collect a paper bag of trash, one of donations, and a stack of books to try and sell.
    .
I think the biggest thing for me was today I threw away my childhood keepsakes binder. I was a hoarder as a child and had stacks and stacks of my artwork, school work, important to me papers, etc. I remember working my way through them in high school and creating two keepsake binders of the most important things. In college I worked it down to one. And now I pulled out four pictures and trashed the rest. I don’t feel the need to cart it around with me any longer!

You have helped me reflect on why I save things, spend money, make excuses and become more minimalist. When both my parents past away I would have given everything I had to get a little more time with them. it showed me what was really important.

You could put dividers into the top drawer of the kids' dresser. I use boxes, cut down, to separate my dainties drawers. Yes, I have too many socks, bras, panties, panty hose of various kinds. But dividers helps me keep them separated.

Like you say, I'm learning that minimalism is not a just a goal, but an ongoing process that needs regular monitoring to remain my lifestyle. Things can creep in and accumulate faster than you think. I usually do a declutter once or twice a year.
Going through my wardrobe this past weekend, I finally decided to let go of a lot of old souvenir t-shirts I'd been holding on to for sentimental reasons. They weren't in good enough condition to donate, and I'd never wear them in public anymore even if they did still fit (which they didn't).
I usually don't get attached to things, but putting these in the recycle bin was HARD. I took pictures of them beforehand, so at least they still live on in my computer, just not in my closet. Then I took them out to the collection centre right away before I could change my mind.
After watching your videos today, I mentally thanked those T's for the great memories they'd held for so long, and bid them googbye. Thank you so much for sharing that tip! 🙂👍
