I always ask my (nearly 3-year old) son if he's ready to give his old toys to a smaller child. He's always happy to do so if he's truly outgrown a toy or a game. it's such a good skill to teach your kids.

I’m am 59 and I live in the house I grew up in. It’s very small but it’s by a beautiful river and this will always be home. Ian fanatical about keeping anything or even pieces of anybody that remind me of my happy childhood or of my beloved mom and dad who passed away 5 and 17 years ago. I’m learning a lot from you! Thank you so much. I feel like I’m drowning in things. I’ve felt this way all of my life. I’m feeling excited about simplifying and being set free. I know it will be hard and emotional, but you are inspiring me to create a space where I can finally feel at peace.

I like that you don’t declutter toys for your kids, and instead involve them. Ten years ago when I started de-cluttering I had sent a bunch of toys to my sons class “swap meet”, and he came home very upset because some of his toys went to other people 😪 It was a big lesson for me to always include him and he feels so much better about letting go of things when it is not forced!

Never too old to sort stuff out, my own de-cluttering journey started when my husband lost his mum, she was a hoarder, the house was dreadful. We had tried so many times to help tidy it, but she would never let us throw anything away, I am sure that the clutter she had accumulated over a lifetime contributed to her mental deterioration. I vowed I would never do that to my children, leave so much stuff behind for them to have to sort through. I don't think he would even be able to comprehend what I mean by clutter, 350 jam jars in the cupboard under the stairs!!!! I also don't give family members or friends stuff of mine, unless they can actually use it. Otherwise you are just palming your clutter onto others. My mum as lovely as she is keeps giving me stuff of my Nan's because of the bad memories she has of her as a child, not an easy relationship, but I don't want or need the stuff!

Marissa, thank you for another inspirational and motivational video. Nice to see how you appreciated the kid's stuffed animals and the lived in feel they add to your family's space. It's been really neat to see how you've maintained your minimal lifestyle while adding visual interest to your home through accents, textures and a few select accessories over the years as you've made your house into a home. And not at all on topic- but wanted to say that you look lovely: so feminine, fresh and natural - love the look.

👏 I have been binge watching your channel for the past few days as a new subscriber. Thank you for keeping it real and showing us your thought process. I just retired and want to declutter my house so I don't have to clean/dust as much. I also don't want to leave a mess for my kids to have to deal with. In the past year and a half, we had to go through my mother-in-love's and mother's places. I miss them both, but my memories hold the most value about them, not their things.

I'm so excited to hear you're still trying to be car-free! It's one of the biggest ways my own family of 4 likes to be minimalist, even though we live in Los Angeles and almost no one believes me when I tell them we live here without a car 😱
Would you consider doing a video about how you live car-free as a family of 4? Challenges, advantages, how it fits with your own frugal and environmental minimalism, etc... It's something I wish more minimalists would talk about!

I love this quick decluttering video. I have been decluttering for six years and sometimes feel like I have nothing further to declutter, but I bet if I put 5 min timers in each room, I would still find so much to part with.
Sometimes, when we overanalyze our items, we tend to create a story on why we still need them.
I'm so doing this tomorrow morning! 😄

When my kids were younger we used to do something similar called "Mad Dash Clean-up." We had a list of chores that everyone choose from and I'd set a 60min timer. One of the chores was "pick music" and someone would put something on the stereo we'd all listen to as we did our jobs (whether it was cleaning or decluttering) sometimes singing and dancing. It was so much fun and very satisfying. My kids are adults now, but to this day they do their own version of Mad Dash Clean-up, always to their favorite music, of course!

    DOOR DRAFTS:
1.) Add door sweep to interior of front door bottom. Examine Threshhold to determine if threshold should be raised to reduce space between door and threshold without creating tripping hazard (i.e., can you ramp the threshold piece). Add weather stripping at sides and top of door jambs..
2.) If odors continue to get through, make a fabric tube and fill with odor absorbing kitty litter or activated charcoal. Pick a fabric that will contain the dust from the contents. A pants leg from an outgrown pair of jeans might be cut and sewn into a tube that looks nice. Tube will fit better if it is slightly loosely filled so it conforms to the door to floor angle. Add loops on one or both ends so it can be hung from the interior handle when not in use.
I have had really good results with small activated charcoal absorbing odors. A long draft stopper version is my next project. My condo building was built in 1924. Original doors. Already added sweeps and weather stripping but I am very sensitive to smoking odors and plan to try making an activated charcoal tube.

You can buy thin plates to glue/screw at the bottom of your door to close up the space. They are available with "hairs" or like a silicone lip. They seal nicely, we have about 3,5cm of space to fill under our door and there is a huge difference with or without. We use the rubber/silicone one. You can find them online or at a local but big "Baumarkt" (dont want to mention brands...) you glue/screw them a millimeter above the ground so that you can still open the door easily.

    Hi from Alaska!
The easiest way to make a nice, neat door draft dodger is to use part of an old pillow case (or doubled piece of fabric) and a pool noodle. Sew 2 lines of stitching lengthwise so that the cut-to-size pool noodle can fit into the sleeves on each side of the door with the middle of the fabric under the door. The whole apparatis slides back and forth as the door is used- no more repositioning the towel. The pool noodles can be removed for washing.

For MissSqueeze: 👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌 and belated happy birthday wishes! I'm super grateful that she picked your pictures and video to share with us because I drag myself around here because having too much stuff is very depressing, and I thought that maybe because I'm older than 60 years old, that my age is the reason why I am having a hard time decluttering. But no... it is a spiritual disease. I can do this! You have proven that no matter our age, we can do it! I will read in the comments to find out whether or not you had help. I feel like I do need some help oh, but I am the only one who can decide what goes and what stays. So it may be something I have to do on my own. Again, thank you so much for sharing

👏 👏 Very Impressive Miss Squeeze! Happy Birthday! 🎂 I noticed recently that I hate to throw plastic away. Recycling solutions where I live are very limited. So I've been storing plastic bubble wrap, mailing pouches and plastic bags for quite a while. I 'googled' where to discard plastic responsibly and found a site that said my grocery store bag recycle will take this type of plastic. I hope it's accurate, my name and address is on the mailing pouches. 🤪 YIKES! I now have enough recyclable plastic to fill the trunk of my car. I need to take pictures because I forget how bad it was when I first began decluttering 15 months ago. I still have plenty to decluttered. My first pass through was enormous, but I still have so much more to go. It will probably take 3-5 years at the rate I'm going but it's vitally important to me to complete. I'm 69 years old last month, and I don't want to leave a legacy of 'crap' to my children to take care of when I'm gone. Thank You Marissa!

For your draft blocker..... Try sewing a long tube and filling it with rice or beans... Then sew another tube, maybe of wool or flannel, to slip the rice one into. Then you can remove the outer one to wash occasionally.

As much as I love your place and I do love it.. when I look at it I feel like something's missing. And like you said we're all different.. I feel like a cozy rug in the middle of that living room would ad so much more warmth to your house. Plus you said it's 100 years old. I'm sure the floors get cold.. they do make 8 by 10 rugs that you can actually wash.. I'm more country. Country cottage when you walk in my house there's a fireplace everybody sits around an the grandkids play on the floor on this big oval rug. I have throw blankets on my couch so, if anybody gets cold they can just grab one. We drink hot chocolate. In winter... We hang garland from the fireplace in Winter for Christmas. My house is all distressed wood..my kitchen has plants on this real large window sill. I have an original farmhouse sink . my bedrooms are very cozy to with throw rugs The farmhouse wrought iron headboards and footboards that are distressed-looking.. I too like to find things outside specially old things.. and I'm not over cluttered.. I'm sure I'm way cluttered than you. But when people come in my house they always say it's so cozy and inviting i have original wood floors .. so nobody has to take their shoes off they just have to wipe their feet.. I think if you were in my house you'd be relaxed to. But like you said everybody's different and it doesn't take me long to clean my house and I don't time myself. Because I'm retired I have all the time in the world.. i take it one day at a time.. I was on a clock when I was working I don't need to be on one now
But your ideas a lot of them are really good.. everybody has different choices. What's right for them you do have a good channel .

I've been decluttering for years. I've actually managed to find new homes for most of it, using ebay. I also regularly donate to a local school .. think pens, paper, bubble wrap, art stuff, seeds, flower pots, it is surprising what schools need. I hate to throw things away, but have finally started on a big push. I was keeping so many sentimental items. The old Christmas stockings for the children. They haven't been used for over fifteen years. Finally having watched several of your videos I have sent them to a charity shop. Someone will love them. I watched this latest video and decluttered the study desk. We all buy too much stuff in the Western World, thinking about all the energy and resources used to make these items is staggering. I now have a one out one in policy and only buy things I really love. I ebayed a Lamy Fountain Pen and kept the old Parker Pen my dad gave me that is non scratchy! Looks over funcationality. I simply love your apartment, it must be so easy to clean! I am sure your videos help a lot of people deal with their emotional baggage as well as their physical stuff. Keep posting and thanks.

Regarding the door draft solution I would recommend making a draft blocking slider with a pool noodle or two and the towel you already have. Attach a door long piece of pool noodle to each side of your towel with hot glue and slide under the door every time you need to block the draft. It stays put and slides easily. Good luck!

You just asked about an alternative for the door.
This can work great for winter drafts too.
If you go to the hardware store they should sell insulating pipe wrap in various diameters. Usually just a couple of dollars.
They are usually black and have a slit down the length to wrap your plumbing pipes so they don't freeze.
Anyway you can cut to length and slip over the bottom end of the door.
There's even sticky tape strip to secure it. Just make sure it clears the floor before taping in place.
Hint, could probably cover these with material if you got creative.

👏👏👏 well done Miss Squeeze! Also draught excluders for the bottom of your door. They're long weighted sausages of fabric specifically designed to keep out draughts. You can make your own out of an old pair if trousers, or you can buy some cute ones from Etsy. I've seen some adorable ones shaped like snakes.

    AMAZING!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
actually at 70 is a great time to take the bull by the horns! I'm 77 and cleared out over several trunk loads of "stuff " went from over 30 pairs of jeans to ZERO.
For me the closets was an easy place to start. It's the family crysta,l china, silver that's impossible to clear.

To prevent the air flow through doors I have made something like a bolster pillow using clothes which cannot be donated and we don’t have textile recycling facility in our place(a village in Northeastern India). It's completely washable and can be removed without opening the door. It's aesthetically pleasing as well, as I reused an old saree with beautiful patterns as the cover. You may try this.

For the drafty door, could you try a skinny, cylindrical cushion, like a long 'sausage pillow' that could sit along the bottom edge of the windowsill or the bottom of the door. If the colour is neutral, it will not stand out in either place and you can custom make it to your taste or have a seamtress throw it together without too much expense. You can also attach a tiny strip of weatherproofing along the bottom of the door that just covers the space between door and floor, but the cushion might work a little better.

I am amazed at the amount of things you found to declutter! And, sentimental clothes (34:00 in the video) are a trap. So happy you have the pictures of both boys wearing the shirt. THAT is the sentimental hook. The shirt can be sent on for yet another picture :) Thank you for continuing to show us how little we need to have joy in our lives!
