I mean even black metal : a genre known for it's overly serious presentation is full of nerds. I mean how many bands black metal or otherwise make themes about Lord of The Rings? Or make references to niche literary, philosophical or mythological things. Think about Immortal ( Abbath era) If you see interview clips he's silly and cheesy as you would think based on the pictures. And that's not the only genre. Death metal nerds have extensive medical and anatomical knowledge. Progressive metal...um do I have to explain. Thrash the macho machismo fortress...nerdy? Metallica= Lovecraft reference, Megadeth= Scifi themes on Rust in Peace Slayer- Nerd for serial killer lore and history. I rest my case LOL
The actual word nerd being used as an actual insult is mostly used by people over the age of 50 but as of recent people use “☝🤓” or 'ackshually' usually a variation of those two to point out a person's behavior being that of a nerd but in a funny or sometimes rarely insulting way.
I don’t think bolt thrower actually got their name from Warhammer 40k. The game didn’t come out until 88 or 89 and Bolt thrower was formed in 86 I think
Star Wars nerds. Star Trek nerds. Anime nerds. Gamer nerds. Music nerds. Movie nerds. TV nerds. Twilight nerds. Harry Potter nerds. Lord of the Rings nerds. Marvel nerds. DC nerds. Guitar nerds. Wrestling nerds. It's all very nerdy.
I would go one step further with this. Even if you are the type of metalhead that doesn't care about lyrics and are mostly in it for the riffs and the guitar wankery you're still being a nerd about the technicalities of the music. Metal isn't nerdy just because of lyrical themes, it's nerdy because even without all that you're still obsessing over how engineering effects the tone of vibrations and how to best manipulate that. All musicians are nerds and once you've committed a significant chunk of your life to trying to relate to any aspect of music on a deeper level you've done a nerdy thing.
and some people are wasting time nerds that just don't do nothing with their lives they just work eat and sleep and go to holidays to spain to get wasted.
Metalheads are also music nerds. Like having the original vinyl, EP single (w/live tracks),picture disc alternative album cover art work edition,Foreign import edition with bonus unreleased tracks (not on the US version) ,goes to every festival, follows their favorite band around the country etc. A non nerd Metalhead would be like the sports fan where (like you said) it's just a past time. They only go to the big major arena concerts near by & only buy the standard release of the album. This type of person doesn't even look like a Metal head. Usually clean cut ,short haired and doesn't dress Metal at a concert with the exception of maybe a T-shirt just purchased at the merch stand. This type fits right in with mainstream society & most of their friends don't even know these types are into that kind of music.
As a massive metalhead, I am also very proud of my nerdiness. Not only am I a black metal musician who loves horror and fantasy, being a huge fan of things Bram Stoker's Dracula and the How to Train Your Dragon books, I am also a massive TTRPG nerd. To the point where I MADE MY OWN SYSTEM BECAUSE I LOVE THAT STUFF SO MUCH. I am also a huge geek about norse history and mythology. I go to Viking festivals, I have a drinking horn. I am also working on a concept album about a horror podcast known as The Magnus Archives. Yes I am a nerd. I wear it with a badge of honor. It's great to see acknowledgement of the intrisic nerdiness in metal culture, and its great to see this nerdiness celebrated.
Yes metalheads are nerds considering we know subgenres, members of bands, their histories, and have multiple niche hobbies. We should be proud of it! Not take it as an insult.
Every person from every death metal, thrash, deathcore band that I’ve ever met has been a certified nerd, and they’re some of the nicest people. If someone calls you a nerd, be proud of that.
Wearing metal t-shirts is very nerd! I remember back in college when a friend was wearing a Star Wars themed t-shirt while I was wearing a one with the album cover of Voivod's Killing Technology. There's no difference.
There's TOOOONS of nerdy metal merch its unreal. I have a Pig Destroyer shirt with Robocop on it, and an Iron Maiden shirt that the band collabed with Marvel Comics on lmao
Another facet of metal and nerd culture mixing I’d like to bring up is the prevalence of philosophy in metal. First band that comes to mind for me is Anaal Nathrakh considering Dave Hunt has a goddamn PhD in it. You wouldn’t think heavy music would make you think but you’d be surprised. Cattle Decapatation is another obvious choice considering their song premises and lyrics.
I just saw Amon Amarth, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, and Frozen Soul last night. I hung out with the guys in Frozen Soul at Redcaps in Philadelphia before the show and they were playing Magic: The Gathering. There is also a viral video of people playing MTG in the pit at one of their shows. On social media, Frozen Soul are starting to incorporate Magic into their aesthetic. So yes, they're nerdy and I love how they're owning it. I do too, and we all should!
My metal mates and I all love Warhammer, sci-fi, and death metal. We’re also around 40 years old. Can confirm that we are nerds from way back. Do people believe otherwise?
I’m a metalhead and on the spectrum, oh I’m definitely a nerd. I’m also an history nerd, an astronomy nerd, a vinyl collecting nerd, a LotR nerd, a……well lots more, lol
Seeing people on Instagram lose their shit when the tomb mold members dressed in a gundam and aliens t shirt made my day. Also I think you hit the nail on the head at 2:37. You just summed up a lot of death metal bands whose members are probably into at least one of those things.
I'd rather be called a nerd for liking metal than being called a "liberal" which I still don't understand what that has anything to do with liking metal music
Also while we're on the subject, a shout out to what must be my favourite nerdy metal band name ever, Feminazgûl, with smash hits in their repertoire including 'The Age Of Men Is Over' 😂
The very notion of being a metalhead is nerdy. Being so obsessed with something that it influences your way of thinking, your fashion sense and your way of life. Being a nerd simply means having more than just a casual interest in something. To the point where subjects of your chosen interest become cause for discussion and debate between people. Metalheads go above and beyond that!! Being a metalhead is officially the nerdiest thing on the planet, and that’s awesome! It just shows how much you love and value something when you make it such a defining part of your identity.
Look. I love metal. I also build scale models and can pretty much do a one-man play based on any Star Trek episode or movie by memory. Every computer programmer I've ever met has been a metalhead. I never considered being a nerd to be derogatory. Jeez... Look at Trey Azagthoth or even Corpsegrinder and their nerdy interests. Yes! You can't be a metalhead without being a nerd. I wouldn't say it's a slur, I'd say it's a requirement.
I just thought of another example: Monster Magnet. I can name two instances off the top of my head of Marvel references, with the first being the instrumental, “Ego, the Living Planet.” And M.O.D.O.K. is name-dropped in the song, “Baby Gotterdamerung.”
I would never understand why the word, "Nerd," is a bad thing. I honestly have pure pride of being a nerd. I'm a massive nerd on world history, greek and norse mythology, horror, true crime, video games, animation, anthropomorphic characters, (yeah I'm a furry) and of course, metal.
I am surprised you did not mention Dio in the video. I would also make the argument that metal is inherently silly and goofy. As someone who right next to me has shelves full of anime and Criterion Collection Blu-ray's, love it and embrace it.
Would have appreciated a headphone warning at the start there bud. Anyway, the guy who got me into metal, and I want to stress he knew EVERY sub-genre of metal, that guy was a huge Crash Bandicoot fan, like we played Crash Team Racing, the N. Sane Trilogy and listened to random metal albums all the time when we hung out. Plus, I want to remind you all that one of the most popular nerds on the internet, the guy known as the Angry Video Game NERD, has namedropped Witchfinder General in his videos and has a Judas priest tattoo. Nerds and Metalheads are brethren, always have been, always will be.
Oh yeah, I know. I've been a nerd for longer than I've been a Metalhead 😂 and the fact I'm a nerd definitely makes me more of an obsessive Metalhead than I would be otherwise.
The problem is the definition of “nerd” has changed so much in the last 10 years. It used to describe the smart kids in school who attended all the science fairs/math clubs/etc and got good grades and such. Nowadays, it seems to describe any basement-dwelling incel who never goes outside and nitpicks about (insert thing) on the internet all day as they build a mountain of empty root beer bottles next to their laptops… …actually, now that I think about it, you’re right. Metalheads are nerds.
In the past, metal was more for 'outcast' working class types, but in the 90's it all changed for sure. The difference now is that the younger generations more openly embrace being 'nerds', whereas the older generations, of which I'm part, were in denial or had a completely different (re: more narrow) understanding of what a nerd is/was.
Their offended that your funny and not hyper masculine because A) their not funny and B) they think that if you and them like the same thing then it somehow hurts their masculinity (even though I think your a very confident young chap)
Perfect timing for this video, I've been reading The Silmarillion (like the big dirty nerdy metalhead I am) and now know where Amon Amarth's name came from 😅

Even if you COULD argue that metal as a genre has nerdier tropes than most other genres, the same can be said for something like anime, which, despite its nerdiness in and of itself as a genre of media, has become such a pop culture phenomenon that it has become mainstream and completely common for someone to enjoy without being nerdy ABOUT liking it. I honestly think the same thing can be said about metal ever since it broke into the mainstream in the 80s; it’s been grandfathered in as a relatively accessible umbrella genre of music for music consumers of all kinds ever since.
It’s impossible to be as ate up about time signatures and polyrhythms and who’s the most brutal technical death metal band and what’s the fastest blast beat ever played, without being A GIANT FUCKING NERD☺️
Pretty much everybody is a nerd about SOMETHING, whether it's music or some other hobby or whatever. I love craft beer and used to trade and seek out limited beers etc., and that's nerdy too. Some people are nerdy about bourbon, or fishing, or cars or whatever. I'm not nerdy in the sci-fi movie or video game sense really. I work in tech so I'm a nerd in that sense. I've recently become more nerdy about smoking meats and cooking steaks (thanks IG). The list goes on.
Iron Maiden - "Murders in the rue morgue " Edgar Allan Poe - regarded by many as a precursor to "whodunit" crime fiction. The fact I'm feeling strongly and making comment proves I'm a nerd 🤓 💯 agree and proud to be! Also - just received my copy of the latest Morgul Blade album - "Heavy Metal Wraiths" love it man. P.S. HAWKWIND - Michael Moorcock, fantasy author, used to do poetry - spoken word stuff at their gigs I think. Stay Metal! Stay Nerd!
That's why I don't call myself a metalhead I call myself a metal nerd. I wear it as a badge of honor.

I think burzum is a word in tolkien as well.
Gorgoroth definitely is, then you have summoning…the list goes on.

I'm no nerd I'm a trve metalhead. Pay no attention to my collection of Mario and Batman tattoos 😂
Stay Metal! Stay Nerd!
Metal head and a nerd 54 years strong.
