Full Build: Swapping A V6 For A Hemi V8 In A Jeep Wrangler JK

- How-to man-up a Jeep Wrangler by plucking out the anemic 3.8L V6 and replacing it with a late model Hemi V8. We lift our Hemi Jeep with mid-arm suspension and a Dana 44 front diff for more articulation and grip. Tech details include how-to integrate new cooling, fuel, electrical and exhaust systems. We complete our Hemi Wrangler project by making it trail ready with big brakes, rock sliders, bulletproof bumpers and a tire carrier. Then, a payoff in the rough with off-road suspension designer Rusty Megois.

Don't ever apologize for using personal protective equipment. People watch the fabrication channels to learn how to do things properly. Show em safety. Some other 2nd rate channels don't use gloves, shields, glasses or hearing protection. Keep up the great work!
I say EXXXACTLAÇY AND I SECOND WHAT YOU SAID. No need in someone accidentally getting hurt because they weren't being safe or cautious....
Full build yes best show on TH-cam
Great work Gents 👍👍
now thats a transformation
The safety shield is a must!! I to have gotten steel in my eyes way to many times even with glasses and it hurts not to mention you can't see or continue to work, definitely need a shield way safer and the work can continue 👍
Beautiful parts all around.
Budget is now 15k for a stock jeep and another 5k in cosmetics and 2-3k powertrain swap. True budget is finding this all for under 1-2k
Agree with the overpriced start. 15k when you're replacing the the entire drivetrain but the transfer case and rear end? I'd look for a clean high mileage with a blown engine or tranny for 5-8k. I do like the build parts to go from the 3.8 to the hemi.
Pshhh that conversion kit they used is $7200. The wiring harness is $1375
@@HDFarm.1 Wow. Makes for an expensive Jeep.

Where the HELL did they find a 2007 Jeep for this build in such good shape with no rust on it!!! lol that’s a unicorn!!!
This episode is at least 10 years old
It’s an old show, the car was like 4-5 years old
I just bought an 09 JK, ZERO rust, sun burnt just a bit. It lived its whole life in AZ :)
From a little old lady in Pasedena of course.
In 1963 I bought a 47 chevy for $100, sold it a year later for $50. Needed the money
All southern jeeps are basically rust less I have a 99 tj and it has no rust at all. Just kissed by the sun
That was a nice little drift on a 2 door JK.
This episode is old but a good one. Great job!
Just wondering, how old is it. Some guy's computer at Rusty's workshop was running windows xp. Based on overall picture quality, my guess is that it's from the late 2010s.
I thought it was old but then saw it was posted like a month ago. I thought I was crazy!
@@imilli89it originally aired in 2014.
Such and awesome and simple build. I love it.
Awesome job ❤
Tip for those copper washers on the breaks. Tighten put socket on and give it a tap with a hammer tighten again.
quite a good video loearned alot about things to think of on my jeep
Thank you for the in depth video! This is a great idea! Your voice inflections sounds very similar to Paul Harrell. That’s a good thing.
honestly is the gladiator had the hemi option i would buy one in a heartbeat
Same here! Would trade in my 2016 ram for one for sure!
100% should’ve been an option from day one. If the ecodiesel gets its issues ironed out and doesn’t get killed by EPA regulations, I’ll definitely consider a diesel gladiator in the future
@@reidhulshof3645 ecodiesel has been discontinued as of this year.
The 2022 gladiator had the 6.2 hemi as an option.
Awesome
There's a company up here in BC that builds Wranglers and Gladiators with 392 and Demon swaps. They step the axles up to Dana 60/80's. They also sell them at White Rock Dodge with a complete warrantee. A bit extreme on cost (just north of $130K CAD), but having seen a few of them perform quite reliably off road, I'd say it's worth it..... if you're a Jeep guy....
I really liked this and did any one catch a section regarding drive line lengths and maximum lift height to keep binding down? I have read info of only going 2.5 inches to keep angles down to a minimum with a v-8 swap on a two door.
They should do slotted screws for the motor mounts, when location finalized, then weld mount.
Everything looks brand new that you took off.was that 07 ever driven before you took it apart?
Awesome video! I think I would've used the Rock Jock anti-rock sway bar instead. Still awesome content

Great job on a comprehensive video guys! I am curious about the tire pressures you were running on the off-road segments. It appears that both you guys and Rusty were running pretty high and that may have caused some of the traction issues we were seeing?
The open diffs were causing Rusty's issues. Do not spend a cent upgrading your Wrangler Sport until you have replaced the axles with Dana 44s and thrown lockers front and rear. If you bought a Rubicon, like you should have, go ahead and lift it.
@@palanthisjust Curious, doesn't the Ruby come with front and rear lockers ALREADY INSTALLED????
My son has a 2013 JK 3.6 pentax I have the same motor in a 2011 Avenger and the Avenger is around 285 HP they were also put in Chargers and Challengers and I believe those were 300HP I bet its mostly computer tuning making the difference and maybe the lope D dupe exhaust on the Jeep but seems to me it would be wiser just to keep the pentax and look at how to tune it to 300hp that is plenty of HP for the little jeep.
What about fuel usage?? What is the MPG? The factory tank is only 17 gals. It needs an extended tank. Love the build.
It won't get much worse than the 3.8. This suck fuel down fast
🔥🔥🔥
How do you control the sway bar release ? Manually ?
u also could. of also put in a select a trac transfer and get even bet mpg in 2wd
That damn head banging music gets real old ! Just build the damn truck.
Bought a 15k jeep and threw in another 20k in parts. Brilliant.
What about the heater core ? Does not need replacement ?
Glad you went with a Hemi. LS swaps are such a stupid idea for mopar vehicles.
Yeah wouldn't want them too reliable with all that power lmao
And an order of magnitude cheaper.
@cody4128 🤡🤡🤡
@@LetsGoBrandon-FJB😂😂😂
And much much lighter
you guys are insane if you think 15k is a good price for that LMAO
The 4 door got a Hemi ? Or the 3.6 ? Which has 85 more HP and Torque than that 3.8. I have a 2016 JKU Sahara (75th Anniversary Edition) and a 2010 JK Rubicon. LSDs pretty much become open diffs at 20-30k miles I hear, as all the clutch plates wear. The 3.8 is fine in the JK, but a JKU, I can see it being a bit anemic. The 2010 is mine, the 2016 my wife’s, they goddamn oil filter housing is an issue.
How about a Hellephant Hemi and 44inch Super Swampers on 15 inch rims? A real 4x4.
what does this cost to upgrade all of this ?
Those rims/tires look like schidt.
Are you overinflated for OFFROAD?
NUTS!
They should include black bolts with those black parts, the zinc coated bolts look a bit, well, eh.
That suspension kit what ? 5-6 grand ?
I get heart palpitations just thinking what the cost of this would be in Australia 😢
swap out the mech Dan for an electric one.. u will have some ponies... and no fan failure
Jeep fixed this problem with the 392 wrangler
Nope is almost 100k vs 13k 15 max
I didn’t realize that the 3.8 liter V6 was so underpowered. The 3.7 liter V6 in my Liberty is more powerful although not by much. The 3.6 liter V6 has better power outputs at around 285 horsepower but still won’t beat a V8 especially a HEMI.
Hay Rusty! I have an 07 wrangler project going on. How about dropping a free lift kit at a disabled veteran house so I can finish my project.
Replace those bump stops too .
Love the jeep but 305x70x17 are 33x12.00 I have 315x70 on my jeep they are 35x12.50
u also have to re align the headlights after u lift the jeep... or u wilblind everyone and not have proper light aim
What vehicle was the donor engine out of? I'm trying to decide if the car engine is a better swap option then the truck engine.
It's a pre-2009 Ram 1500 engine.
It was a 2008 ram 1500 4x4
i'd go truck hemi, they're easier to find good donors with engine and trans mated together with the components you'd need to start the conversion. You'll want to use the car hemi exhaust manifolds (or aftermarket) because they dump downward whereas the truck hemi manifolds would put the downpipes into the firewall
it’s better to go for a truck engine for the torque
42:48 well they did in a way it's called the Jeep RUBICON 392

Thought 305/70R17 is 33.8”?

Remember people. This was a TV show. Product placement and now outdated
How much did all this cost? 😮

wouldve been nice to hear the freshly installed v8 instead of that loud music
Think you coulda come up with a better jeep model than that year.
But your the one throwing the money at it. Still enjoyed watching.

This was from 2013.
Turned a 12 grand JK into a 52 Grand JK
you also could. of put a 4.7 and had even better mpg
JUST VIN, NOT VIN NUMBER!
Whats the name or brand for the kit? For the swap
Jeep speed shop in California
Is it me or does that “Hey Guys” sound like Chris Fix? 🤔
You probably lost a few boys who don't get the whole break/brake thing.
You are aware that in some states that if you swap to an engine that wasn't a factory or dealer option, it is automatically not legal for street use? As an individual staring at a 3.8 that catastrophically failed I've been kicking around options to put my JK back on the road however the 3.8 was a turd in minivans IDK what possessed Jeep to put it in a vehicle that was considered "severe duty" I will never know. I'm still considering what to do it isn't the swap it's the hidden costs like you have proven here. Axles, brakes, drive shafts (you sorta glazed over that), programming a PCM. All the little nickel dime stuff. Why dont we look into a 3.8 to a supercharged 4.3 stroker? - Thumps chest and grunts - Ugh! There is no replacement for displacement. Obviously, you never thought, "Run what ya brung." The same type of thinking builds a beautiful Model A rod and chits it up with IFS and a Chevy 350. I do somewhat apologize for the rant, as it is your show and your and the sponsors dime, the reason I can't entirely keep my mouth shut is that it is an overwhelming amount of content like this that prevents forward thought and intelligent coversation about improving what is available in favor of reinventing the wheel(literally). All said, I may be sandy that the 3.6 added in 2012 out powers the 3.8 by 50hp and isn't prone to drink an entire crankcase of oil between changes. Making a fill the oil and check the gas scenario. Painfully sad on a stock production vehicle. Ok I'll put my soapbox away now and will begrudgingly give this a like.as an afternote can I smack whichever engineer decided to mount sideview mirrors on a vehicle with removable doors to said removable doors? Legality notwithstanding the possibility of vehicle damage when removing the doors is a bit of an added facepalm. 🤦♂️ I havent done it yet, but I've seen a fair number of JKs that fell victim to this. A little thought and consideration for nationwide laws should have made this a red flag. Just a thought. I really do have a love-hate relationship with my Jeep.😅
Those heat shield studs are known for rotting off here in the rust belt, would never mount anything to them here.
U gained 200lbs, 50 horsepower, and 1.5 sec faster 0-60. Doesn’t sound like the juice was worth the squeeze
The comment: this built should come straight from the factory is unrealistic since the price would be way too high. Besides most Wranglers sales come from 5 doors configurations not 3 like this one.
The gas tank on the 2 door is way too small, you’ll be filling that up every few days.
You are always showing bigger tires and wheels but never telling us how you adjust the speedometer to be accurate.
So all I need is money....great
Has anyone put a 4.0 in a 3.6 yet
drop the top for gods sake
$7200 for conversion kit + $1375 for the wiring harness doesn't seem reasonable.
Just buy a 392
Sorry but the 305/70/17 are actually 33.80 inches the 315/70/17 is 34.4 inches
Actual dimensions varies per manufacturer but he was definitely not accurate. Darn tv scripts
Jeep stock is not good for the eye it's like a puppy. 🤣🤣✌️
Should have never dropped the I6 but a HEMI is better.
Im interested in this swap, can you send me a quote for parts and labor?
Contact Jeep speed shop in California maybe they can help you with that.
Or Motech Jeep in Las Vegas.
5k on the low end
First time watching your video anyone who’s not wearing that kind of face protection using a grinder is stupid and you’re not using overkill. in my career I watch three fingers be cut off not watch but help the guys to the hospital grinders are the worst. But as a boilermaker it’s my main tool.
wow u guys can't buy your own AC system?
how bad
I love north-americans man... bro states "we're dumping the underpowered 200 horse 3.8L v6"... bro... this underpowered v6 is well above most cars sold in my country... I believe most cars here are around 100-120 bhp... ayy lmao

Watched the black Ranger one and about half of this one and can only say this show is the car version of OCC. Just shows what you can build with an endless budget. Not to fun for us poor folks that can’t drop $50,000 on a toy. Back to VGG for me.
Yeah this has been done many times before nothing new
Entire build was decent until the random muffler put in a place that will rattle . These car shows are always a joke
wow power nation doesn't have their own ac machine.... pretty bad
They do, ankle vents and windows
Insane amount of money upgrading a short wheelbase that is tippy. The things you do for content when parts are free.
Why do you use "tv style commercial breaks" in a yt video.. Dont ruin the video man
That ugly background music,.....
All that work for a 150hp gain?
140 HP gain along with 160 Lb-Ft of torque and thats without doing any mods or tuning.

17 in minimum rim for those brakes? Get different brakes. The oversized fad rims look stupid as f.
You could have done this to a good looking Jeep, like a TJ, the JK is the ugliest Jeep ever built, lol.
5.7 hemis are junk I got that engine in my 19 ram 1500 valve's make noise and busted exhaust manifold bolts
Had on in my Jeep Grand cherokee...it ate itself at 36k miles.
Such an awesome engine.
This motor was pre AFM/DOD so no cam issues. The manifold bolts take less than 2 hours to fix and if you have cam noise you should have had it taken care of by now. My 2015 ram had no issues with cam/ lifters.

Ridiculous, just drive on the trucken roads instead of all that stupid sh!t
U had the ability to swap LS and you picked hemi instead....? Theres a reason LS swap is a common term and hemi swap isn't. And its not cause the hemi is any more difficult. All this work for 150 HP...smh
This is a stock Hemi, most LS's are roughly similar power and torque numbers. Unless you expected them to go crazy and get a $10k engine. This was a junkyard hemi from a pickup. A junkyard LS from a Silverado 1500 (to keep it similarly priced) would be just as terrible stock.
@teyoung304 not hardly. U throw a 6.0 ls with small cam, stock cathedral port heads, and valve springs youre at 450 horse with a good tune and maybe close to 500 on e85. You could find all that for 2500 bucks pretty easy.
