Dude, I love golf, but am terrible at it, but WILL put something like this together. I have seen about 15-20 videos of setups, and your video is by far the best, and most helpful that I have seen, I will watch it again to work out what I can do, and how I can do it in my space in Thailand. I HAVE ALSO SUBSCRIBED…..GREAT WORK MY MAN…..
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Glad the video helped. If you have any follow up questions let me know and I will be sure to get back to you.
@@GolfQuestChannel awesome thanks so much. I’m looking to copycat your set up. Looks nice. Do you have e6 and all that stuff or do you just stick to the launch monitors built in simulations?
@@chriskozub8012 I do have a basic e6 subscription. I got it because a) a buddy has it as well so we can play online head to head and b) it was one system that worked with iOS so I didn't need a gaming laptop. Eventually I might upgrade to laptop and gspro but I'm quite happy with the iPad and e6.
Thank you! The support is appreciated. Believe me, I thank my wife a lot :) When this idea was first discussed I actually wasn't even serious, rather just talking and she was very supportive. Very blessed. "... insists n parking her car... what the heck is that bout" lol awesome.
I'd tell my wife if a car is in the garage, it's mine or nothing. But I don't have to, garage is mine and 1st floor of our house is hers. Good deal if you ask me.
@@GolfQuestChannel I can not find the mat you have in video..one with that strip of longer turn to hit from for irons...can you send me a link or give me a name for it or was that custom?
Just going back over things and I think I may have missed this comment. My apologies. Probably too late but the mat is the fiberbuilt grass series 7 x 4.
Brilliant. I would only suggest one other thing. Another TV monitor above the Apple TV, so that you can watch live (or recorded) golf while you are practicing.
Thank you so much for this video. It has helped me out tremendously. I could tell you like quality things so I didn't have to do much research like I usually do and modeled my setup after yours but went as cheap as I could go, luckily getting some holiday pricing. My shopping list: Spornia SPG5 $171 + GoSports shank net w/sandbag $20, Garmin R10 $600 + Pro V1 RCT balls $50, Fiberbuilt Flight Deck $50 + 3'x3'x1.75" mat $65, Projector 1080p w/50% zoom & ±50° vert/hori keystone $200 + Spornia sim screen $36, Projector stand $61 + iPad stand clamp $18, and an old dusty iPad pro 1st gen $Free. Grand total before tax = $1271. I was agonizing about buying the skytrak because wife saw a mevo+ in the amazon cart and was not happy about it costing $1700 but luckily read a couple of articles that say RCT balls with R10 was decently accurate. I'm surprising the wife for xmas with this sim build because due to her low vision she can't practice on her own at the driving range and now can play whenever she wants and it will save me tons of time and money from taking her to a toptracer range.
Wow amazing. Thanks for sharing your experience and pricing - seems like you did very well. Hope she loves it (but how can she not right)? Glad this video helped it along!
Thanks for sharing all of the detail! So the iPad is running through software and connects to the launch monitor? And the Apple TV simply allows you to project/cast the view from the iPad to your TV? I’m curious if Smartcast features of current smart TVs would do the same.
Your summary is correct. Im not sure about Smartcast - definitely a possibility. I also wanted the Apple TV so I have the option of watching TH-cam or live sports while I play. I do that a lot actually and just play / practice right on the iPad.
Flat screen tvs are so cheap now....75" Samsung for under $600 US......(would then get an Apple Air Play) the projectors ($900 and up) are so expensive ...add in the hitting screen ($600 and up) .... I am leaning toward just using a big Flat Screen for the visuals....and hitting into a net. Your video gives me confidence in that decision.
I haven't regretted it. Now, if I had gotten used to the projector first, maybe I would miss it (not sure) but as it is, everyone works beautifully. Thanks for checking out the channel.
I accomplished a similar SkyTrak setup but for about 1/2 the price. All pieces were bought new. Skytrak and case was 1k less, Ipad was $300, 50 in TV $300, mat recommended by Golf Channel was $300 ( this mat helps you know when you hit the ground before the ball). Had to open up the ceiling of the shed where system is located.
Thanks Bob. Much appreciated. I am using e6 Connect - it has a pc version and an iOS version. The iOS version isn't nearly as nice graphically but it functions the same and has the benefit of playing from the iPad.
So glad you liked the video. To fix the mats I used LePage PL Premium construction adhesive. I propped a toolbox against each piece overnight until it cured.
Hi Golf Quest, We'd love to see an update on your simulation build and upgrades you've made over the past 2 years. Please share with us when you can. Thanks for everything you're doing, my build is similar to the one you've presented in the video except I went with the Garmin R10. Thanks again!
Thanks for the comment - it's appreciated. I haven't done too much to the build actually. Recently I did move to a gaming laptop in order to run the new skytrak course update. I plan on doing a video on that soon. Thanks again for the support.
Hi @GolfQuestChannel , Just FYI, turns out I won't have space for the GarminR10 in my setup so I will be going for a setup exactly like the one you've shown but with a Net Return and OG Skytrak. What're your thoughts on Sktrak 5.0 on the OG Skytrak ?
@@NS-ok4ov as in the new software on the original unit? Seems to be decent but for some reason I wonder if the yardages are off a bit since the update. I’m not positive but I have been wondering.
New golfer here watching all these videos on the most beautiful sport being played and I get discouraged because I don't see many lefties like myself. Been a challenge finding good starter set of lefty clubs. Great video, very informative and I also appreciate a fellow lefty will be subscribing for sure. Any and all advice as to where to find the best budget lefty starter golf clubs will be appreciated
Honestly my biggest piece of advice is buy a used set that is maybe like 5-7 years old. You’ll get great value and way better than a no name starter set.
So my original response was from the golf course lol. Nevertheless, I do think that a used set of irons and a used driver is the way to go. I you get one of the big brands (Taylor-Made, Cobra, Callaway etc.) you can't really go wrong with a used set. It will be better than any starter no-name set you will get. Then, once you have been into the game for a bit, you can eventually get fitted for a new set. Let me know if you have any more questions and thanks for supporting the channel - appreciated.
Nice to see some Canadian content with pricing. Good job. My hill is a little steeper to climb as I no longer have a garage and no indoor ceilings over 8'. Considering doing something outside, which really limits it's usage. : (
You got my gears turning. I've got to get this into my garage, I'm presently using my golf net outside (10' x 10' x 10') It sucks because its always too bright outside. Hitting balls at night is fantastic but what about the football game?
Do you think it is possible to store the Fiberbuilt Mat vertically up against the wall when not in use? I want a garage setup that I can break down when I want to park the cars, the Spornia net seems to break down and store relatively easily it's the mat that I'm not sure about. Fiberbuilt's website says this mat is ~150lbs, which while heavy, suggests that it's rigid enough to tip up against the wall without issue. True?
I wouldn't go Fiberbuilt (not the series I have) if you are doing that. It is very heavy and not easy to move (one reason I love it - doesn't shift around). But Fiberbuilt does have other options that are more portable. I would check those out if I were you.
Very Informative and Relaxing. For my garage in Chicago suburbs: -how do you heat -is the impact very loud -would a rubber standing mat work. Need to move after each use. Thank You PS I'm building a 5x16 raised putting green with reg cups and levelers for creating breaks, in my basement but not settled on the turf. Have any suggestions? I've read good reviews about Camry Turf. -
Thank you. I heat with two ceramic heaters. My garage is not insulated (other than the walls not sharing an interior wall with the house that is) but my garage door is a metal insulated door which helps as well. So I don't lose heat instantly when I heat. The impact is loud with the driver - can definitely hear it in the house but it's not horrible. There are other golf mats that are more portable. However, if you play a lot you might start to feel it in your joints and also they won't last as long. The Fiberbuilt definitely is not portable though lol. That thing is a beast. As for putting turf I don't know and I don't want to mislead you. Thanks for checking out the channel and best of luck with your projects!
No not really. The net leans forward slightly so the base edge is a bit further back than the rest of the net. You might leave an inch or two just to be safe but probably fine without that buffer.
Great video, thanks! This is the second video of yours I watched today. Hopefully you won't get anymore posts about calling it a low budget sim (sheesh). Question for you... I'm going to do a similar build as yours with about the same length from mat to the SPG-7 net. I'm likely going with a Eye Mini Lite. When playing a course on E6, have you ever tried putting using your Skytrak? Just wondering if it's possible being that you would put right into the net. Seems like it would be strange, but still curious.
@@Nick-kq2sw yes I used putting all the time on e6 and putted into the net. It is weird as it really comes down to knowing the distance and making a stroke with enough pace. Works well enough but not ideal. Thank you for the support!
@@GolfQuestChannel Cool, I was hoping that was the case because I'd like to do the same but wasn't sure if that would work. I looked at your other videos but didn't see any of you putting. Do you happen to have one? Also, do you just put off the hitting strip?
@ yes just off of the hitting strip. Now recently I have switched to the skytrak software and started using their auto putt feature which I believe is more similar to trackmans auto putt system. It gives you a putting score that is fractional. It’s weird but takes putting out of it in a non biased way. I switched because a few months ago I read a book called putting out of your mind (video being worked on right now) that changed my putting drastically. Now I don’t want to putt to the number since I’ve had so much success outside. I don’t want anything to screw it up lol. Also with the auto putt system rounds are very fast. Finally, if you look at any of my sim playing videos you will see me putt on there. Cheers!
Thanks for the video. This is really good and gives me some good perspective. Question about the garage door opener, I have a two-car garage with "hard corners" (no space between garage door and adjoining wall similar to yours). I will have to cut a hole out just like you did. What kind of wall mount garage door opener did you purchase? Trying to figure out the smallest form factor wall mount garage door opener that I can get. Thanks!!
Hello my friend. Good job. Certainly a viable option. You did leave out one cost. The side mount door opener. From what I'm told and have been quoted, those are around $2500? Also have a question. DO you havento have the iPad and Apple TV as an interface? Can you not just install a wireless receiver/adapter from the skytrack to the TV?
Thanks. Yes, I didn't include that cost because we were actually due for a new garage door as well and it was part of a package (new door, extended track, side mount opener, and install). I think you can get the unit for between 700-1000 CND and if you can install it yourself terrific. If not, you are still looking at the install cost and the cost of extending your current track. Finally, you need either an iPad or a computer / laptop to run the skytrak software (and then any other simulator software you might want to add - currently I use e6 connect to play courses). Hope this helps and thanks for checking out the channel :)
Great vid. You just sold me on the Spornia versus a kit build for a bay. And no projector. Very timely for me as I am starting to plan my setup in the basement. The pad was pricey, but likely necessary. Thanks for showing us.
Hey thanks so much and glad I could be of help. I still love my setup as much as the day I finished it - I'm confident you will love your's too. And yes, the mat was pricey but it is one of those things - you get what you pay for.
I could put a short throw projector in but I just haven't felt the need. Now, with the new e6 Apex software launching (hopefully sooner than later) I will consider upgrading to a gaming laptop and then potentially projecting.
how many feet away was your skytrak from the net in this video? I don't understand why skytrak says 10-12 feet away from screen is recommended when it's not a radar unit. I bought skytrak because I wanted to be more like 6-8 feet away from the screen so i can hit lofted full shots and save space overall. m space is not fully set up yet so i'm trying to see how many feet others placed the unit away form their screen/net?
Sadly no. One of its great benefits is it’s extremely heavy base. Really the way to move it is to take it apart into a couple pieces. Wonderful if you don’t want it to move but not great if you need it to. There are smaller versions that might be more portable though.
You inspired me and I ordered stuff to get this going. I live in India, so I need to source all this from abroad. Watching this video for the second time. My wife and I are also road cyclists and we have a bike and gym room with about 9 bikes. Planning to add a sim there. It's a 26*14 foot room so space seems to be enough. Planning for the Garmin R10 though not the skytrak. Few questions if you don't mind. 1. That stiff ring all around the black screen - any possibility of a ball ricocheting of that back to you? 2. If I set this up indoors where I have no pegs to hold it down, what holds it in place 3. Is it worth buying the side extensions? And, how have you fixed that one side side extension? 4. What height would you need if you wanted to swing a driver?
Glad to hear you are building a Sim - lots of fun ahead. Here are the answers to your questions: 1. I have hit the inside back tent-like pole with a ball before and it has not come back to hit me but to be fair I don't do that very often. Has only happened on the dreaded shank. 2. Nothing is holding my Spornia Net down either. It just sits there. Now, I do have the left side tied off to the wall just to help keep it perfectly straight (vertically) but it's not absolutely necessary. 3. I don't think I have ever actually hit the side extensions. I bought those more for my son in case he really missed. I don't think I would buy them again but maybe one day I will be glad I have it. It is just fixed to the bottom of my garage with a screw into the side wall. 4. Height with the driver depends on how tall you are. I have approximately 9.5 feet of height in my garage and that's all the room I need. Hope this helps and have fun with the build!
Great video. We must live close if you golf at bondhead. Do you have any thoughts on the garmin r10 I'm also thinking about doing a shed build out for a sim.
From what I have read / watched, the garmin r10 is a very powerful, portable, and obviously cost effective unit. If you are going to the range a lot this would seem like a great idea. However, I think for an indoor setup I wouldn't go this route. It is reported to be not as accurate inside and for myself, I wouldn't have the distance required to place the unit behind the ball. Skytrak allows for more compact sim setups. If you have left handed and right handed golfers playing, Skytrak is not ideal as it needs to be moved to accommodate which player (lefty or righty) is hitting. Best of luck with your Sim build - so much fun!
I really like the idea of a wall mounted display. Even 65 - 75 inch 4K tvs are dirt cheap these days. Would a MEVO + be a consideration or does it take up too much space. I don't have your space limitations ( my useful area is 16 wide x 25 ft long x 12 high ). Thanks
With 25 feet in length you should be good with the Mevo+. I haven't used it myself but I understand that it sits between 4 - 7 feet behind the ball. Definitely the better option if you are wanting to play with left & right handed players and if you want to take it outside (maybe to the range). I know lots of people love their Mevo :) As for the wall mounted display, even if you want to add a projector setup later you can just have the tv there for entertainment while you play. It makes a lot of sense either way. Thanks for watching and let me know how your build goes - exciting times!
Great video! My brother and i are looking to each build something similar so we can play head to head (we ive on opposite coasts in the US). I was wondering about the cost of the e6 simulator software. Wouldn't that be part of the total cost? I didn’t see it listed, so wanted to ask. Thanks!
I didn’t list it as part of the sim cost as you can practice etc without it. There are different levels of membership. If you want peer to peer you need at least the basic subscription which is about 300 CND a year.
How did you keep the side net down at the front? Is there a bar or hard material at the bottom that helps it stand up? Would you recommend getting the side nets
There is a loop at the end of the side net to leg into the ground and I just drilled a screw into the concrete. I personally don’t think the side nets are necessary unless you have eratic golfers. Better safe than sorry in that scenario.
Outstanding video, thank you so much for sharing! A few questions, if you don't mind... 1. I noticed in your other video about the Spornia SP7 that you hit a 56-degree wedge, and the ball hits near the top of the target. Have you hit a 60-degree into the net, and at what height would you say it hits the net? I have 8' 5" of height to work with, so I'm trying to figure out if I can make this type of setup work. Also have 11' of width and 26' of length. Initially I was looking at the Garmin Approach R10 (which you have to set up 8' behind the ball, with another 8' min in front of the ball, so with that, there is a lot of room for the ball to go over the net - with SkyTrak though, less distance is needed, so that problem would be solved. 2. From the back of the Spornia net to the farthest point of your backswing, how many total feet is the footprint of your setup? Thank you! Matt
I don't mind at all - glad to help where I can. First, I have never missed the net with a wedge. If I pop the 60 degree up I have hit the "hood" which is the extra part included at the top of the Spornia but that is rare. I don't hit my 60 degree far at all - like 70 yards (I hit the ball pretty high). So if I don't have issues I don't think many will. Having said that, when you do hit the hood it comes back at you rather quickly which is not ideal lol. I have yet to be hit by my own ball though (in a year and a half of having the sim). From the back of the net to the farthest point in my backswing with a driver is 14.5 feet (15 feet to be safe extra safe). As for the height, I think it depends on how tall you are. I have a little more ceiling height than you (just over 9 feet) and I'm 5,10. I have plenty of space to swing. There is no way I would be able to have a sim without Skytrak. I've heard great things about the Mevo as well but it requires space I don't have. I have been thrilled with the Skytrak. Thanks for checking out the channel and if you have any other questions let me know.
@@GolfQuestChannel Thank you very much - great info! Just one more: SkyTrak - from what I understand, it comes with access to a driving range and what else, exactly? I thought this was going to be the launch monitor to go with, but if it doesn't come with any free/nearly free courses, it sounds like it might add up over time (whereas the Garmin Approach R10 requires more space BUT has free courses preloaded). Thanks again!
@@mattjaworski-cwcscleagueco395 It doesn't come with much no. You need to pay for a yearly upgrade to skytrak (just over a hundred) and then you also need to subscribe or buy additional sim software. Currently I use e6 connect. I've heard good things about GS Pro. I use e6 connect because I can run it from my iPad. But I hear you,, if you don't want the additional cost.
Hey man! Love your setup. I mirrored mine closely to this and will be posting soon. Question, what did you do to help with the loudness of a driver indoors? Mine sounds like a shotgun going off haha
Great video and advice. One question: does your garage have a slope? Wondering if that would affect numbers on the skytrack or if it would cause bad habits to constantly be practicing on a downhill or uphill lie.
I do have a slight slope yes but it doesn't seem to affect anything at all. I just put my skytrak flat on the extra portion of the Fiberbuilt mat (highly recommend that mat and I have no affiliate to them). It's pricey but worth it. The only thing I really find affects misreads is the background. I put my green screen behind me and that really helps.
@@zombiehunter1152 Well, I went back and forth for a while but I can definitely say I don't regret finally pulling the trigger. I hope you're able to pull it off :)
Thank you! So, I didn't mention this in the video but I also had a new garage door installed when I had the opener put in. The cost of the new door, opener, extended track and installation was 3K CND. It was all included in the quote so I'm not sure how much just the opener and track would be but I would assume more than half of that cost was the door itself. Hope this helps.
Thank you! My ceiling is about 9.5 feet. I could get away with a bit less but I'm not overly tall (5,10). Thanks for watching and commenting :) Hoping you have enough height - I still enjoy it the same as when I put it in over 10 months ago.
Great setup! Glad I found this for that net option. What's your total distance from ball to back of net? I'm dealing with a small space configuration as well
Thanks so much! So from where I place the ball on the mat to where the impact screen hangs is 82 inches. However, the net goes back a little bit more as the impact screen hangs down straight and the back of the Spornia is slightly slanted away. Also, the ball to the front edge of the Spornia mat footprint is only 21 inches. If there is anything else I can help out with let me know. Cheers.
No I have not. I have hit the "hood" of the Spornia net (the curved top piece) but even that is very rare. I definitely hit above the impact screen (the draping part with the target) sometimes when I hit my 60º wedge). When it does hit the hood the ball can come back quickly so you have to be ready to dance when you pull out the 60º lol.
I have 9 1/2 feet and I have lots of space (I'm not tall though - just 5'10". I think 9 feet is enough but 10 feet to be super comfortable even if you are taller. I have read that the shortest you can go is 8 1/2 feet high. Hope this helps and thanks for checking out the channel.
@@GolfQuestChannel Thank you! I just discovered your channel (and subscribed!) and enjoyed the couple of videos I’ve watched. And you’re the first fellow lefty I’ve seen putting out golf videos. Solidarity! Thanks again!
I use e6 connect. I got it mainly because a) my buddy had it already and I wanted to play head to head online and also I could run it from an iPad. Love being able to run it from an iPad but of course the graphics suffer as a result. However, that isn't as important to me as being able to play so overall I'm quite happy with it. Eventually I'll probably upgrade to a gaming laptop and then look at other options for now I'm happy with the iOS version of e6 connect.
lol for sure. I actually got it at an art print store in a mall many moons ago. I was still in high school at the time. Since then, I think I've seen it in a store one other time.
with an even more limited space setup (and way more limited budget) I ended up with an even cheaper setup with very similar results: Fiberbuilt Flightdeck (same mat as yours in a compact version) - 70 USD, 1.5in gym flooring that's level with the mat on both sides, 50 USD , Spornia SPG-5 with shank nets, 210 USD, used skytrak on ebay for 500 and just my phone on a stool for the "software". Prices have gone down since this video too so it's cheaper than ever to build a great simulator for under 1k USD that would fit even inside a 700sqft apartment living room (my case).
@@GolfQuestChannel That’s what I call my buddy when he caddies for me. I actually bought “The Kramer” for a friend as a surprise and he couldn’t stop laughing for 15 minutes.
@@GolfQuestChannel actually you can just print an image of Stan & put it near your bag for club selection advice. Just don't take it with you if you have to appear in Court for something.
So glad it was helpful and thank you for watching. Here is the Canadian Amazon Link for the iPad stand I bought: www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07CYGM132/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I looked on Amazon.com to see if they had the same one but couldn't find it.
I’ve hit my fair share of shanks in there and it has never missed the side of the net. I’ve hit the “hood” before with a wedge but I haven’t missed the net in the two years I’ve had my sim.
@@NickOnPar ya that’s one of the best things about it. It just needs the small window of space in front of the unit. Something like Mevo needs a lot more distance.
@@NickOnPar not at that price point or cheaper. Even the updated skytrak is more expensive. With the newer unit shipping now you may be able to get a deal on a used skytrak.
@@GolfQuestChannel I'm very interested in trying a similar setup. Do you think I can squeeze it into a 14' 5" x 9' 6" porch? Only place with high enough ceilings.
@@brianpinkley It will be tight for hitting driver / woods with that space. I'm pretty sure the 9'6" width is okay if you put the mat right against the edge of the porch (the side you are facing). You might even get away with the length but I think it will be iffy - will also depend how tall / long your arms are. There are a couple other options for nets that aren't quite as deep as the spornia such as the Net Return Pro but I think they are more expensive, and I can't speak to the "bounce back" effect they have on the ball so you would want to research that a bit if you wanted to go that way. But a net like that might save you the space you need in order to swing the driver confidently. Hope this helps.
That was from the builder and what was left from the builder and what was revealed after I tore down the loft. I would prefer it to be cleaned up a bit but wasn't necessary for the main goal: golf.
You need something to run the simulator software either a pc / laptop or an iPad. Yes, I could play and practice golf on the iPad (and sometimes do and put golf or another sport on the tv while I play) but it's also nice to have the image bigger. Also, the TV was far less expensive than the iPad.
Absolutely. Here is another video I did just on the net which also includes me hitting some drivers th-cam.com/video/qR0vek1kG9o/w-d-xo.html. I also have several simulator playing videos where you can see a variety of shots being hit.
Good question. A couple of things factor into this: 1. The Spornia is almost 7 ft across on the base (maybe an inch or so short) - and that is from the outside edge of the base to the opposite edge. The Fiberbuilt, is actually just a couple inches wider than 7 feet. So that factors in a touch. 2. I lined my hitting strip up to the center of the net so the left side of the Spornia is actually a lot closer to the wall than the fiberbuilt net. Finally the wide camera lens distorts it a bit too. So the mat is slightly longer than the net but not by much.
I may have asked you this before, but my brain can't remember. I'm assuming that the studs are 2x4 basically giving you 4 inches of depth to mount the jackshaft opener in the wall. Doesn't look like much clearance between the wall mount and the rails either. What's the depth on the Liftmaster you have there? I believe you have an 8500?
New subscriber here. Great job with the video. Great explanation. Great set up. Love to golf. Want a simulator in my garage, but i my ceiling in the garage is way too short.... so i just go to my buddy's house who has a sky trak and a wall of painter's drop cloth where we project... at least it's something. Good luck with the channel.
Thank you for the kind feedback and also for the sub - it is very much appreciated. Having access to the Skytrak at your bud's place is still great though - loads of fun. Hoping you have a great golf season ahead :)
So what I didn't share in the video is that I had a new insulated garage door installed which we were due for anyway. The side mount opener, new door, and rerouted tracking, and installation were all included in the quote I went with so I don't know the exact breakdown of the side mount opener. But by looking it up, I think they run about $600-$800 if you can install it yourself.
Thanks for the reply. My space only has 9ft ceilings, which based on some test swings, will accommodate my height and swing, although not much room to spare. I think there should be just enough room for a hitting surface.
I actually was due to replace my entire door so I put in a new insulated metal door and the opener, tracking, and install were all included in the price and it wasn't broken down on the quote or invoice. However, I'm pretty sure a side mount opener runs around $600 - $800 CND depending on the model. Then you need to add some additional tracking plus the install.
So with my current setup no. My son is also left handed so this worked for us. With my original mat, I could pull the net and mat over slightly and be able to hit on both sides. However, this is the one drawback of the skytrak (and GC Quaid for that matter) - you have to physically pick up the unit and move it based on which handed player is hitting. If you have a bit more space and plan on switching between lefties and righties often then the Mevo+ is probably the better option (unless you don't mind moving the unit in between shots).
I think it's because the mat is quite grippy and dense so it grabs the club when you "take a divot" or when you hit it fat (I'm sadly more the latter lol). Not noticeable at first but over time it became quite hard on my wrists and elbows especially my lead side (I'm lead hand dominant). I didn't want this to be the case because I truly loved hitting off that mat but in the end I had to make the change. And yes, the Kramer is a classic lol. I'm glad I found him a proper room in the sim space :)
@@GolfQuestChannel I have that problem with the mat at my local simulator too. After a session it is hurts to bend my lead elbow for awhile afterwards. I can't wait for summer so I can hit on real grass. I also can't wait for the housing market to turn around, as soon as I get a house, in goes a simulator like this one, with a better mat like yours to prevent injury.

I have seen about 15-20 videos of setups, and your video is by far the best, and most helpful that I have seen, I will watch it again to work out what I can do, and how I can do it in my space in Thailand.
Nice setup and great video. U need to thank ur wife. My wife insists on parking her CAR in the the garage! What the heck is that about?

Brilliant. I would only suggest one other thing. Another TV monitor above the Apple TV, so that you can watch live (or recorded) golf while you are practicing.
Yes! Right now when I watch live golf or football I watch it on the tv and just play from the iPad. But a second monitor would be pretty good
Thank you so much for this video.
Flat screen tvs are so cheap now....75" Samsung for under $600 US......(would then get an Apple Air Play)
the projectors ($900 and up) are so expensive ...add in the hitting screen ($600 and up) ....

Nice set up mate. I'm going to do one very similar, cannot wait!
Giddy up! Fun times ahead.
Interesting. Are you comparing USD to my CND pricing by chance? I'm just curious because that is a pretty big difference. Love the Skytrak!

Thanks Bob. Much appreciated. I am using e6 Connect - it has a pc version and an iOS version. The iOS version isn't nearly as nice graphically but it functions the same and has the benefit of playing from the iPad.

We'd love to see an update on your simulation build and upgrades you've made over the past 2 years.
Hi @GolfQuestChannel ,
Just FYI, turns out I won't have space for the GarminR10 in my setup so I will be going for a setup exactly like the one you've shown but with a Net Return and OG Skytrak.
Ya that’s tough. Maybe you can start making plans for a golf shed 👍🏻

Awesome job. Love your set up. It is a dream of mine for sure
Thank you very much.
Great video. Thanks.
How much space do you think it takes up in terms of width. I’m worried my garage is too narrow.
Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. If I pushed the mat right up against the wall, I could get away with 9.5 feet across. After that I think it would be tough.
I’m reading lot of reviews people have issues w the app. Have you had any issues? Great review btw!
With the skytrak range app? None at all. I actually think it’s very well done and a great visual presentation. Thanks for watching 👍
Good Job!!!

Superb build. Thanks.
Very Informative and Relaxing.
For my garage in Chicago suburbs:
-how do you heat
-is the impact very loud
-would a rubber standing mat work. Need to move after each use.
Thank You
PS
I'm building a 5x16 raised putting green with reg cups and levelers for creating breaks, in my basement but not settled on the turf.
I feel the same about a TV, I'd be totally ok with that. good vid!
Thanks Rich!
very helpful! i am wondering though how much room do you need behind the spornia base? does the ball fly past it much?
Thanks!!
My opener is the Liftmaster 8500W. Hope that helps and best of luck with the build. Fun times 👍🏻
Great video! If you had space for a projector would you change over to that?
I could put a short throw projector in but I just haven't felt the need. Now, with the new e6 Apex software launching (hopefully sooner than later) I will consider upgrading to a gaming laptop and then potentially projecting.
what is the height clearance requred for such a build? 3m?
It will depend on how tall you are. I am 5 10 and have clearance of 9.5 ft (2.9 meters) and I have a little room to spare. Hope this helps.
Can you use the skytrack with a gaming PC with the latest golf sim games?
You totally can - it would look better that way for sure and you can run things like GS Pro.
Good, simple to the point video. Big help and same issue with small space in garage. Thank you!
Thanks and glad it was helpful 👍🏻
Hey is the there a way to interpret draw and fade by how the ball rolls back?
I’ve wondered this myself but I don’t think so. At least not from what I have seen. Skytrak or Mevo are great solutions though 😉.
He is a loathsome offensive brute ! Yet I can't look away 🤣
Hahaha
how many feet away was your skytrak from the net in this video? I don't understand why skytrak says 10-12 feet away from screen is recommended when it's not a radar unit. I bought skytrak because I wanted to be more like 6-8 feet away from the screen so i can hit lofted full shots and save space overall. m space is not fully set up yet so i'm trying to see how many feet others placed the unit away form their screen/net?
@@DylanInAlbuquerque I’ve never heard that about skytrak before. It probably sits about 6-7 feet away from the back of the net.
Good playing!
Do you think your fiberbuilt mat could be portable? I”m looking to either set it aside in order to get the cars in the garage. What do you think?
Sadly no. One of its great benefits is it’s extremely heavy base. Really the way to move it is to take it apart into a couple pieces. Wonderful if you don’t want it to move but not great if you need it to. There are smaller versions that might be more portable though.
Great video... "Low Budget" is relative. I'll add this to my "Maybe One Day" list. :)
I totally agree. Relative to each person and also relative to what a full blown sim can cost. Thanks for watching and commenting - appreciated 👍🏻
The one thing that is stumping me is my garage floor is so uneven and if I build a platform I might not have room to swing love the build..
How uneven? The fiberbuilt has a rubber base then the grass so it’s pretty thick already.
Can you please share what your ceiling height is in your garage?
Sure thing - it’s about 9 1/2 feet. Could get away with a little bit less but not too much.
2. If I set this up indoors where I have no pegs to hold it down, what holds it in place
3. Is it worth buying the side extensions? And, how have you fixed that one side side extension?
4. What height would you need if you wanted to swing a driver?
Glad to hear you are building a Sim - lots of fun ahead. Here are the answers to your questions:

Do you have any thoughts on the garmin r10
I'm also thinking about doing a shed build out for a sim.
Nice setup, what is the total length of it?
From the back of the net to the farthest point in my backswing with a driver is 14.5 feet (15 feet to be safe extra safe).
I can't find the Matt you have with the strip of longer Matt to.hit from? Can you send me a link for it
Here is the website link for the mat I have: fiberbuiltgolf.com/collections/fiberbuilt-grass-series/products/studio-mat-4-x-7-gs2. Hope that helps.
@@GolfQuestChannel got it. Thanks very much!
Great set up! Do you hit driver into the net?
Yes all the time!
I have lots of videos on the channel where you can see me hit all my clubs if you want to see it in action.
Hey man! Love your setup. I mirrored mine closely to this and will be posting soon. Question, what did you do to help with the loudness of a driver indoors? Mine sounds like a shotgun going off haha
Thank you! I didn’t do anything for the sound. The driver is loud but you get used to it 👍🏻.
Very nice set up.
Thanks so much. I've enjoyed it quite a bit.
@@GolfQuestChannel I was thinking about doing the same in my garage as it’s detached from the house but ild have to extend it first.
@@zombiehunter1152 Well, I went back and forth for a while but I can definitely say I don't regret finally pulling the trigger. I hope you're able to pull it off :)
Great review. You answered so many questions for me. I having the same issues with the garage door. What did that new opener cost you installed?
@@GolfQuestChannel thanks sir
How tall are your ceilings in your garage? This would be perfect for my garage but I don't know if I have enough vertical space. Thanks and great vid!
Thank you! My ceiling is about 9.5 feet. I could get away with a bit less but I'm not overly tall (5,10). Thanks for watching and commenting :) Hoping you have enough height - I still enjoy it the same as when I put it in over 10 months ago.
@@GolfQuestChannel can you swing a driver in that height?
Great setup! Glad I found this for that net option. What's your total distance from ball to back of net? I'm dealing with a small space configuration as well
Thanks so much! So from where I place the ball on the mat to where the impact screen hangs is 82 inches. However, the net goes back a little bit more as the impact screen hangs down straight and the back of the Spornia is slightly slanted away. Also, the ball to the front edge of the Spornia mat footprint is only 21 inches. If there is anything else I can help out with let me know. Cheers.
How are your wedges? They don’t risk going over the net or hitting the roof at all?
No I have not. I have hit the "hood" of the Spornia net (the curved top piece) but even that is very rare. I definitely hit above the impact screen (the draping part with the target) sometimes when I hit my 60º wedge). When it does hit the hood the ball can come back quickly so you have to be ready to dance when you pull out the 60º lol.
The only dimension I didn’t see was the height of the garage ceiling. How high is it and what is the minimum safe height you’d recommend to have?
I have 9 1/2 feet and I have lots of space (I'm not tall though - just 5'10". I think 9 feet is enough but 10 feet to be super comfortable even if you are taller. I have read that the shortest you can go is 8 1/2 feet high. Hope this helps and thanks for checking out the channel.
@@GolfQuestChannel Thank you! I just discovered your channel (and subscribed!) and enjoyed the couple of videos I’ve watched. And you’re the first fellow lefty I’ve seen putting out golf videos. Solidarity! Thanks again!
@@McQ14 Thanks for the sub! The support is genuinely appreciated (and always good to hear from a fellow lefty!)
Awesome setup and review
Thank you! It is appreciated.
What golf course software program are you using and how do you like it?
I use e6 connect. I got it mainly because a) my buddy had it already and I wanted to play head to head online and also I could run it from an iPad. Love being able to run it from an iPad but of course the graphics suffer as a result. However, that isn't as important to me as being able to play so overall I'm quite happy with it. Eventually I'll probably upgrade to a gaming laptop and then look at other options for now I'm happy with the iOS version of e6 connect.
Nice video, but let's talk about the important thing here...lets talk about the Kramer painting. 😆 where did you get it?
lol for sure. I actually got it at an art print store in a mall many moons ago. I was still in high school at the time. Since then, I think I've seen it in a store one other time.
But I did a quick search and it looks like there are options on Amazon - just search Kramer Painting Framed
with an even more limited space setup (and way more limited budget) I ended up with an even cheaper setup with very similar results: Fiberbuilt Flightdeck (same mat as yours in a compact version) - 70 USD, 1.5in gym flooring that's level with the mat on both sides, 50 USD , Spornia SPG-5 with shank nets, 210 USD, used skytrak on ebay for 500 and just my phone on a stool for the "software". Prices have gone down since this video too so it's cheaper than ever to build a great simulator for under 1k USD that would fit even inside a 700sqft apartment living room (my case).
@@lgmasco nicely done! My buddy had the flight deck for a bit so I was able to try it out too. Thanks for the comment 👍🏻
The painting of Kramer is pure golf inspiration.
But, what about Stan the Caddy?....
Lol that would be a perfect compliment 👍
@@GolfQuestChannel That’s what I call my buddy when he caddies for me.
I actually bought “The Kramer” for a friend as a surprise and he couldn’t stop laughing for 15 minutes.
@@GolfQuestChannel actually you can just print an image of Stan & put it near your bag for club selection advice. Just don't take it with you if you have to appear in Court for something.
@@tlist1970 what a gift! What a friend! Amazing
How much head space/ceiling space did you need?
I have 9.5 feet and have no issues but how much you need will depend on your height.
Thanks for the great info. Do you have a link for the IPad stand you purchased?
So glad it was helpful and thank you for watching.
Here is the Canadian Amazon Link for the iPad stand I bought: www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07CYGM132/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I looked on Amazon.com to see if they had the same one but couldn't find it.
Are you able to hit driver that close to the net?
Yes sir! Check out any of my sim golf playing videos to see it in action 👍🏻
What golf program are you running? And is it a download app?
It’s the native skytrak software for the range and E6 Connect to play simulated rounds. It’s one of the few that run off the iPad.
Not worried about shanks or sky ball?
I’ve hit my fair share of shanks in there and it has never missed the side of the net. I’ve hit the “hood” before with a wedge but I haven’t missed the net in the two years I’ve had my sim.
@@GolfQuestChannel the skytrak works with minimal distance from ball to net too?
@@NickOnPar ya that’s one of the best things about it. It just needs the small window of space in front of the unit. Something like Mevo needs a lot more distance.
@@GolfQuestChannel any other good devices that work with minimal space in front of ball to net?
@@NickOnPar not at that price point or cheaper. Even the updated skytrak is more expensive. With the newer unit shipping now you may be able to get a deal on a used skytrak.
So from your iPad to the Apple TV that is wireless just Bluetooth. Maybe that’s where the delay is??
The delay in the reading? No. Skytrak has a small delay in reads.
Great explanatory video! How long is it for the entire set-up? i.e., back of mat to the very back of the net (not impact part of net)
The measurement you are asking for is 11 feet 4 in. Obviously you will need some swing space behind the mat though. Hope this helps.
3:10 love to see quality work! XD
That was from the builder and what was left from the builder and what was revealed after I tore down the loft. I would prefer it to be cleaned up a bit but wasn't necessary for the main goal: golf.
I can understand everything you purchased EXCEPT for the Kramer picture:). Wife made you put it in the garage huH?:)
@@la5150hi-lophoto lol - I’ve had that picture since high school. And yes, it finally now has a home that my wife can live with 👍🏻
While I do love Cramer, Dogs Playing Poker always brings a touch of class.
Good call. The Kramer I had for years and he never had a proper home until now. I’ve never had a print of dogs playing poker though.
Why did you get the Ipad Air if you have the TV? Didn't understand that part... or why get a TV that's more expensive if the Ipad works?
You need something to run the simulator software either a pc / laptop or an iPad. Yes, I could play and practice golf on the iPad (and sometimes do and put golf or another sport on the tv while I play) but it's also nice to have the image bigger. Also, the TV was far less expensive than the iPad.
Nice man cave.
Thank you 👍🏻
Can you hit your driver into that net?
Absolutely. Here is another video I did just on the net which also includes me hitting some drivers th-cam.com/video/qR0vek1kG9o/w-d-xo.html. I also have several simulator playing videos where you can see a variety of shots being hit.
What was your ceiling height?
I have 9.5 feet but could get away with a touch less.
Outstanding video...great information and descriptive. Bravo.
Thank you! Your kind words are appreciated. Hoping this helps you on your way to your own sim build!
What’s the height from floor to top of roof attachment?
If you mean the height of the hood attachment for the Spornia net it's 7' 5".
@@GolfQuestChannel yes thank you. Do you have the sp7 or sp5?
@@chriskozub8012 sp7. They have an 8 now as well but little too big for my garage.
@@GolfQuestChannel so I do have a question. The sp7 is suppose to be 7x7. Why is your 7 foot hitting mat wider than the net? (Looks that way at least)
I had to break out the ladder but the depth is 8 inches :) You should have more than 8 inches between studs correct?
And yes I'm pretty sure it is the 8500.
What was the cost of the side mount opener? I figure that’s got to be a nice chunk to add to the total cost.
What’s the height on your ceiling?
Approximately 9.5 feet.
Thanks for the reply. My space only has 9ft ceilings, which based on some test swings, will accommodate my height and swing, although not much room to spare. I think there should be just enough room for a hitting surface.
@@cg522 9 feet should be good. Hoping it works for you 👍🏻
that's exactly what I'm looking for!
Great! Get the ball rolling and we can hook up for a game soon :)
@@GolfQuestChannel I would love too! at the moment your setup is out of my reach but I hope it will get better soon!
How much was it to convert the garage door opener (install and parts?)
Are you able to play with a right handed player with this setup?
So with my current setup no. My son is also left handed so this worked for us. With my original mat, I could pull the net and mat over slightly and be able to hit on both sides. However, this is the one drawback of the skytrak (and GC Quaid for that matter) - you have to physically pick up the unit and move it based on which handed player is hitting. If you have a bit more space and plan on switching between lefties and righties often then the Mevo+ is probably the better option (unless you don't mind moving the unit in between shots).
Thanks. Very interesting. (Love the framed picture of Kramer!😄)
1 question: What was the reason for the body aches with the first mat?
@@dj-flights7376 Nothing like hitting on real grass - summer can't come soon enough. The housing market is insane. Has to be very frustrating for anyone looking right now. I feel for you. Thanks for checking out the channel - it is appreciated :)
@@GolfQuestChannel Yeah, I'll wait for house prices to become reasonable again. I'm in no hurry. Also, great Frank Costanza sticker on the fridge. "Serenity now, insanity later."

Ipad Air ? You can get a mini pc for 80 bucks used. If it can emulate wii games.. its powerful enough for that.
