Universal Credit agents 'encouraged' to get claimants off phone

  • Universal Credit was meant to simplify benefits and make work pay, but a report from MPs this morning says the system is causing "unacceptable hardship" to many claimants.
This conclusion is supported by a call centre agent who handles people's claims - he has told Sky News, staff were discouraged from helping claimants and urged to get them off the phones as quickly as possible.
The government has already delayed its plans for a wider rollout of Universal Credit and is under pressure to drop it altogether.
Sky's politics and people correspondent Nick Martin has this Special Report.

Universal credit should be completely separate from housing benefit and not subject to sanctions. It also needs to be paid directly to the landlord. As far as I am concerned they have redesigned the system to increase homelessness and push people to the brink of madness which will eventually result in more lawlessness and another large scale riot.

I went self employed, told the job centre and they never passed that info on. So I had to call 4 different numbers to cancel my claim. But if I ever wanna claim again, I'll be sanctioned for not engaging, even though I had already told them I was self employed and to close my claim!!!! It's a joke.

Because of this she is unable to work and the way the benefit system works I had to go part time as well because if I earn over a certain amount she can get no help at all. I was on benefits for a few years as a young person. It was the most stressful, panicky time of my life. I felt like people looked down on me for not working, no matter how hard I tried. I feared losing my benefits for any little misstep. I got to my lowest point mood-wise.
I was lucky enough that the staff I eventually worked with at my local job centre really CARED about their clients. When I found my current job my coach and another member of staff who had previously been my coach were completely ecstatic for me. So happy, so proud; and not for seeing someone off benefits - they were genuinely happy for ME because I was on cloud nine that day.

This UC system has been specifically designed to be unnecessarily complicated and extremely difficult for claimants to tick all the required boxes, which consistently change.
In this way the government hope to save hundreds of millions per year through claimants who simply loose hope, give up attempting to make a legitimate claim or are sanctioned within the minefield of bureaucratic hurdles.
It amounts to a form of population cleansing where those most in need, are scrubbed out by their own hand.
No government truly cares about its own people.
It only exists to feather the nests of those without a conscience, morals or empathy for another human being.

I am not going to accept my claimant commitment. Because I can not do full time. Told me if I don't get a fit note I am not allowed part time. I am trying to prevent myself from ending in a wheelchair. Trying to keep mobile and independent. Made a complaint to my actual advisor about the aggressive, bullying and terrifying interview. She took her colleagues side. I would rather that my claim was closed as this is far too stressful for me. I know I can not fulfill the commitment. So no point in accepting. Has any one gone through this?

I recently was let go from a job , after 30+ years of putting into a system I was informed I wasn’t entitled to anything , my partner works part time but because she earns over a certain amount we were no entitled to universal credit either. The system looks after the wrong people nice to know that all the tax I’ve been paying since I was 16 is paying to people who are not entitled to it.

I work with young adulthood leaving the care system and this idea that working pays is absolute nonsense. They are already on a low wage as it is, and the more they work the more the they deduct from the benifits. Its a bad cycle to be caught up in. I feel for them.

I was encouraged to get off benefits when I was going to college part time for my second year by my job coach and she said the Jobcentre consider going to college part time was the same AS full time. I had to show the Jobcentre proof that I was allowed to stay on benefits while studying part time.

Since I moved over to UC in 2018 as a full time carer , I’ve had nothing but deductions .
My housing costs were paid direct yet I received rent arrears and eviction notices .
I have also been paying back other mystery deductions .
In total I have paid almost £7,000 in deductions with no end in sight .
My local housing advised me to sign a DRO .
I didn’t have these arrears prior to 2018.
I am having to run the home & caring duties on less than £100 a week .
No one will help me sort this out despite having the evidence via SARS paperwork that my account has many discrepancies.
When I’ve paid one amount off another pops up .
It has genuinely made me that anxious I have been seeing a therapist :(

They randomly cut my benefit by £90 without warning and it’s clearly a mistake. Nobody has rectified it and I cannot pay a bill or buy essential food. Disgusting they always messed up in the past before it was universal credit.

People who made universal credit have millions in the bank they don’t understand poverty, working minimum wages, working in zero hour contracts, disability, single working parents who can’t make ends meet, vulnerable people who needs extra support, elderly people who don’t know how to use the internet. Universal credits is a direct attack on the most vulnerable citizens it’s crazy that’s it’s still an issue it’s gonna go down in history that it was the worst policy ever made in this country.

I quit in 2021 , after me and my partner having a new born baby and me working from home I was struggling with calls. Especially those customers with mental health conditions due to a previous traumatic call in 2019. My manager instead of letting me do admin work told me if I had a customer who threatened suicide to end the call and hope another work coach would call them back. I refused.

I lost my job and had to claim universal credit. I had 400 pounds a month to live from including my mortgage council tax all utility bills and food. I got no help woth mortgage payments as its a mortgage and not rented. I went 5 days without food once just to feed my son. Had to prioritise food over bills. Ended up in debt and bailiffs breaking into my home. Had to now sell my house cheap to pay off debts and will become homeless as the council will not help saying I have made myself intentially homeless. I cant rent as I have bad credit due to the debts. My life has been destroyed I had everything until I lost my job through no fault of my own and now I have nothing.
