Since Universal Credits were rolled out many people committed suicide, suffered mental health issues, become homeless and starved.
How is this an improvement to tackle the welfare system?

I was on universal credit. Worst 8 weeks of my life, hardly any food, had to move back in with my mother for christ sake. Thank god for the last year I've been employed, it's not the best job in the world, but it's 40 hours a week and I feel like the richest person in the world these days. I wouldn't wish universal credit on my worse enemy.

My dear friend had worked hard all her life then she got terminal cancer and had to quit her job. She applied for UC but it took so long. It caused so much stress and she got into debt, fell behind with her rent etc, etc, etc. Absolutely appalling. I have helped her as much as I can. I don't understand how some people get everything handed to them on a plate and others have to suffer endlessly.

    • @wleon4068

My point exactly:I will say this. That being FORCED to attend these so-called 'job centres' for MEANINGLESS interviews with a so-called 'work coach' takes away the person's FREEDOM to actually go out there and find their own work. It takes away a person's FREEDOM OF CHOICE to be able to pick and choose which vacancy is suitable for him or her. This whole corrupt set-up is designed solely to BREAK a person. This is not about finding you a job. Oh, no. This is about how many poor souls THEY CAN SANCTION AND LEAVE TO DIE!!!
I therefore, suggest, that every single so-called 'job centre' up and down our land should be BOYCOTTED! The one thing the DWP have over people is the control over money/finances. This is the fear factor that they use in order to CONTROL YOU! They are even using the threat of STARVATION in order to force you into none-existent work [ or work that is clearly not suitable].
I say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Once people lose their fear of the DWP, then believe you and me, things WILL CHANGE FOR THE BETTER! Once a person has had every single thing taken from them, their home, their money, their food, then what more can those bastards take [ other than our very lives}? There will come a point when an apex will be reached. When the poor and the vulnerable cannot give anymore It is at that point, that people may just say, FUCK IT, WE DON'T CARE ANYMORE IF YOU LEAVE US WITHOUT ENOUGH MONEY TO BE ABLE TO EVEN LIVE!
People will then STOP attending so-called 'job centres'. They will STOP becoming LAMBS TO THE SLAUGHTER for a Tory Government and their cohorts that could not give a FUCK about you. And it is at that point that once people have had every little thing taken from them, and once people REFUSE to sign up to the Claimant Commitment and Conditionality, then there will be a sea change.
The whole rancid poisonous system will come crashing down around the Tories ears. Because once people - as I said - lose their fear of the DWP, then there is nothing more the DWP can do - other than try to starve and kill you. But justice will prevail. Those Ministers and their cohorts within the DWP, who devise lethal policies knowing full well that those same policies will probably KILL INNOCENT BRITISH PEOPLE...well, those Government Ministers - along with those within the DWP who are only too fond of sanctioning people, they should be DRAGGED FROM POWER AND MADE TO ANSWER BEFORE A COURT OF LAW, AS TO WHY THEY DEVISED POLICIES THAT THEY KNEW WOULD KILL PEOPLE?!
As Martin Luther King once said: 'THERE IS NOTHING TO FEAR BUT FEAR ITSELF'! Once you lose your fear of the DWP, then, as I said, there is nothing more that they can do to you [after they have exhausted all other avenues in trying to kill you that is

Australia is a hell of a lot worse. You can be deported just because you are no longer the required age, or you need too much medical support. If you and your husband split up, unless he is an Australian citizen, then he can run the risk of being deported. The cost of living is far higher as well, Australia is not the magical place that it seems because of Neighbours.

An illness at the wrong time, an accident, a child born with horrible medical conditions, any of these things is enough to cause most families to run into crippling debt. The economies in most developed nations are teetering on the brink of complete collapse. Even the wealthy are not immune if that happens. Life isn't easy, for anybody, hopefully the angry, hateful people in these comments never run into any of these circumstances. I don't think they would fair well.

My husband lost his leg on the 26th December . He worked all his life since the age of 15. Our son is severely disabled so I’ve always had to care for him. Our first payment from applying on the 3 jan. we had our first payment in march. We’ve had £600 to live on. They never tell you how much or when. Or even if your entitled to every month. They tell you two days before . They take all this money off you they say you’ll get a £1,000 but say your only get £600. When I question their figures they say it’s average not actual. So they say I get £72 a wee carers I told them I only get £52 they average it. I’m in so much debt at the moment . I went back to work three days into it my husband wheelchair bound was helping look after my son . He fell down the stairs and ended up in hospital I had to leave work. They took more money off us cause I worked three days . The average wage is minimum wage not 14,000 a year.

I believe that The Secretary of State for the Department of Work and Pensions should be charged with corporate manslaughter for all the deaths their department make in their name. I believe that the charge should be made at the end of the MP's tenure in the role.
The reason I believe this is that if a private companies decisions caused someone to lose their life then they would be charged with corporate manslaughter, why should there be one rule for the population and one rule for those in power.

i am on ESA and once had to go to the foodbank and was told i could only get 1 food parcel a year! they gave me lots of shopping to help me out but you can't go more than once in some counties,,, i worry about universal credit as i do not understand it and they are also trying to get people into work is a joke,, i asked them to fund me to go college so i could learn a new skill as due to physical disability i can't do my old job as i am a professional decorator and wish i could work but i only get basic ESA and no PIP and most my benefits go on bills and i am also paying off debts and only get 440 a month and i have to pay towards my rent as housing benefit does not cover me in a 1 bed flat!?!? if i was to become homeless it would cost them more to get me back into accomadation but they do not care,, i got help with paying my water bills and i applied for Council tax help and that got paid as CALS wrote an itinery of my bills and i am 24 quid shortfall every month at the moment and i hate it knowing that certain people get PIP when they live at home or blagged the system,, i told the truth and now they have no assessment center for PIP in Leicester and expect me to travel when i can't afford to get there and with my mental health i would be in a city i do not know and with no guide ect and i am on Diamorphine and have to go chemist at 9am every morning and they set appointments for 10.40am in the next town!! the system is a joke and they are also deporting more people and making workers pay more tax and get taxed on what we buy too!???,, they are just trying to make life so hard that you either get a job or suffer,, some criminals will just keep robbing and the police are underfunded and i also know 2 people who have commited suicide due to lack of services to the most vunerable,, it is getting worse and wish Teresa may would get replaced by someone with a brain,,

A friend of my father's was an extremely talented chef. Whatever he put his hand to in running takeaways/restaurants they would always make plenty of money. Customers would travel miles to where he cooked. Life was easy while he worked hard. But he was a terrible gambler.
I remember him getting his eldest child 1 birthday present. After that nothing.
For someone with no education he managed to raise a family, bought new cars every 3 years, owned several houses and he never needed benefits.
At mid age he had a crisis and sold nearly all his assets to launch into the casino and bookmakers, convinced luck would just be on the other side. Luck was not on the other side.
Now in old age his hands, back, right shoulder and knees hurt. He can't work as he did in his prime. Over 4 decades of work has taken its toll on his health and he is needing the state's help now.
If he didn't gamble, buy new cars, guarantee friends and invested very modestly he would be so rich, could have retired decades ago and would not need any of the state's benefits.
A tale of a very talented man making very bad decisions. What is perhaps worse is he can't see how lucky he has been with so much talent, with such high earnings, low cost housing and the simplicity of only needing to put down the deposit on property instead of buying the cars.

The Universal Credit minimum income floor has and will put many more self employed people out of business before they've even begun. I thought the conservatives were all about helping entrepreneurs not forcing them into out of work benefits or an already crowded jobs market. In all honesty the rhetoric and language used by politicians and public sector workers towards self employed people is offensive.

I was allowed to attend this appointment with her but wasn't allowed to sit near her only to watch from a distance and unable to help her in anyway? It is very difficult to get my wife to go anywhere even Hospital appointments as she suffers both in body and mind, she as been in bed for three days now and won't even go down stairs, the stress is getting to much for her and truth be known me too the final straw is she may have to go in again for a assessment for her illness I fear she is close to the end with all this and I have to watch her fall apart. I can't understand why them that need the support and help are treated like this to them the box they put you in is black or white I feel they simply want you to just die and not be a drain on society, the way things are going they may get their wish.

Its worse now then before. I've gone back on it after being employed for 4 years. What I find when coming back on universal credit or whatever it was called 4 years ago, is just a hopeless situation.
We're expected to do 35 hours a week job search related activity, that's 5 hours a day doing job search. There are not enough jobs out their to do this, its inconceivable.
The stress it puts on you is worse then anything I dealt with in my previous retail job, because at least there, if I made a mistake or forgot a details it didn't result in me getting my money sanctioned.
They sanction you, but expect you to keep doing 35 hours a week job searching, which costs money, to go to interviews, get yourself cleaned up and presented for interviews, to travel around looking for work, to get online, all which costs money.
This is a perverse system, and its clear the government doesn't care about the little guy. If they did, they wouldn't keep letting migrants inter the country and taking all the lower end jobs from British citizens.

It's survival of the riches. Sadly we live in a country that is in shambles with over paid ministers competing to see which party can out do others, it's a game to them, a game they can afford to take their time playing as long as they getting paid whilst the poor are stressing if they can afford to eat for the day. They don't care about helping people find work, they just want to wean people of benefits that's why they made the application process troublesome and annoying to deter people from doing it. It was never about helping the poor but to find a way to get rid of them.

History repeats itself. All you have to do is see what the previous conservative governments did and you will see that their agendas always made the rich richer and the poor poorer. Even at the height of the economic crisis 12/13years ago, we didn't see the poor suffering this much...I never voted labour or conservative but if I had to choose between the two, I will choose Labour. At the end of the day, It was a labour government that introduced the NHS and revolutionised the welfare system in order to benefit us and not the 10% elite. So as far as I am concerned, no matter how bad, they will never be worse than the tories. I am also all up for nationalisation and taking control of important parts of our economy...the labour government post ww2 did just that, and it saved our economy even though it was a time of great austerity.

I even joined the Army Cadets as a youngster which was an honour of wearing the uniform for which I am absolutely proud to be part of. I really enjoyed working, but a certain incident 10 years ago which me in hospital put an end to it and now it is causing me hell of a lot of problems with my mental health for which I am now on medication through no fault of my own. Yes, there are people who scam the system for money they are not entitled to, so I sympathise with you on some of the contexts, but not on the others. I come from a family of very hard workers. I do wish I could go back to work, but I had to retire due to ill health. I learned to save and do the things I couldn't afford to do before, such as learning to drive, get a car and insuring and taxing it and getting things that I need, I do pay my way such as my essential bills, gas and electricity, council tax, rent, telephone and Internet, nothing comes for free, and you get drug addicts and alcoholics who get their money and they bloody blow it in the same day on drugs and alcohol instead of buying food and paying their way, and after they have spent their money on crap, they go out robbing people or go scrounging for money or food because they have bloody well spent all their money on the shit that they put in their fucking veins such as heroin or cocaine, or piss up the wall, and that's what really pisses me off big time.
