It actually does makes a lot of sense for Diane to be working with Marmalade. She basically dares the bad guys to steal the statue then agrees for Marmalade to "change" them then pushes Wolf to be the good guy. 4:22 the reason Dreamworks gave the main characters name's their own animal name is because in the actual books thats what they were named, and since they're adapting it from the books they have to keep it that way. So it really shouldn't be counted as a knock towards the movie but rather to the source material.

I like to think that The Bad Guys movie is a "test". DreamWorks is experimenting with new ideas, and obviously, a new animation style. The movie is like DreamWorks doing a survey to the audience and asking them whether you like the stuff that they're doing. They probably didn't take too much consideration to the depth of character development and the general plot of the movie because it's just experimental... or that The Bad Guys was just a showcase of their new animation style, like the animation of the movie was the main meal whereas the plot and everything was just the side.
Regardless, I think DreamWorks hit the mark with The Bad Guys. Even with the somewhat generic plot and of course, very very high furry bait, (Yes, Wolf dude and Diane Fox are kinda alluring) I still thought of it as a fun movie. The heists, music, (again) creative animation and decent comedy. With how much they showed with The Bad Guys, I can't wait to see what they have in store for Puss In Boots 2.

Marmalade's recording (and also Tiffany Fluffit as a character) are there to show how fickle the public's attitudes are towards the Bad Guys, and towards most things in general. You could read it as a subtle critique on cancel cultures and performative social activism (vicariously participating in the rehabilitation of criminals to make yourself feel good, instead of say petitioning for their rights). But the movie, I think, uses the cat scene, the gala scene, and any other scenes involving Fluffit to show that other people's approval and disapproval are so easily earned that they shouldn't be your motivation for anything.
It's contrasted against Diane, whose mantra of "doing it because it makes YOU feel better" is the central theme of the film.

While I personally LOVED the film I can see where most of your criticisms come from, I like the idea of the bad guys each having their own trials at Marmalade's and I even have my own idea for Dianne. I have the idea that she was working with Marmalade to try and catch the Bad Guys in the act, but not to the extent of knowing about what he wanted with the meteorite. She could have made this agreed for the better of the city and with experience being a criminal it makes sense why she would do that. And she would be willing to give the Guys a second chance as she had already given herself hers to become the governor so maybe she thought they could too. This could add more to Dianne's character without changing that much from her movie iteration.

In the books it's actually a different story. My English is bad so bare with me: in the books Mr wolf (all the characters have Mr in front of their names) calls together a gang of animals who have bad reps as being "bad guys". He then tell them that they're gonna be called the good guys and try to do good. The main villain is marmalade and the plot kinda goes the same but they get introduced to Ms Fox who is a reporter but also a secret agent and they kinda work together. especially during the cute zombie animals arc
And yes the character development is way better in the book and they each get their own parts

For me this movies ie between okay and good. My problems are mostly the same as you, but also I felt like there’s a missed opportunity of them showing us the bag guys’s backstory. Since they’re just named after the animals that they are I thought it was gonna revealed there were all orphans, and were never adopted cause of there species (hence why they don’t have real names), that would be interesting as it would explains why they teamed up. Not just because of them sharing the same pain of discrimination but also loneliness, even making snake’s rant to wolf male more emotional impactful. This is also just a personal pet peeve of mine but I don’t get how they’re only like 7 anthro animals in this world, they could’ve at least did a BoJack horseman thing and had at least some animal characters in the background

The only thing that bothered me was the fart jokes , I think the narrative worked for this type of film , still better than many movies I saw lately , maybe a series for the franchise will help understanding the world and characters better , it was meant to give you good time and send a number of nice messages and test new styles of art , I give it 9/10

    • @noush4835

i think the movie time was too short fr us to actually feel anything for the characters, maybe in a sequel, we can actually dive more freely into each character.
and yes the fart and butt jokes were annoying asf but i think the shark being able to disguise just added a whole lot more to the comedy, like even though im an adult, i still found that part funny as hell, maybe cz the movie had a crazy style and it was easy to go along with it XD

Race to the Edge I completely understand tho, as that would have to be a whole series of reviews with the amount of new content that it adds.
Gift of the Night Fury is also a good one for the established canon, as it established why Hiccup never drastically updated his saddle until the 3rd film.
Book of Dragons and Legend of the Boneknapper are moreso just one-off specials, not directly tied with the canon, because of 4th wall breaks in the former, and the sheer lack of the Boneknapper's presence in any other HTTYD media.

That scene was amazing, fastpased, and had great animation, but I had no idea why they were wasting all of that money. The whole point of the heist was to steal the money, so why the fuck did they leave their windows open and let the money just fly off!! They wasted more money than what they were left with!! I know I am being nitpicky, but that scene really got me angry! Also, great video, btw

Honestly, I think that the movie is real solid when you ignore the issues of worldbuilding and occasional low blow jokes.
I think that a lot of media i’ve seen generally takes more story driven, serious undertones that can be pretty dark because they deal with a lot of topics that require that kind of respect and care (death, for instance).
From what I see, Bad Guys really focuses on the concept of creating a story that is fun and silly. Not necessarily the braindead kind of humor (Minions lol), but one that takes a concept that is dumb on paper and twists it into something that is entertaining and fun to watch on every step of the way.
I’d give this movie a solid 7/10 because it kept me visually entertained and invested, but maybe my bias as an animator speaks for itself 555555+
