Not really, I feel as that would have taken away from some of my enjoyment. It showed how short time was for Vivo and helped the transition from Cuba to Gabi. Also it gave me my favourite song from the movie, like seriously it’s a bop.
Idk why but I have that feeling that if he didn't die in the beginning, they would have killed him off like close to the end of the journey to meet Marta or something like that because his death is a huge part of the movie. But I'd much rather have seen his journey to Marta
Honestly the idea that the two were separated for so many years makes sense when you remember that Cuba is an authoritarian dictatorship that doesn’t like to let people leave. As a first generation Cuban American let me tell you: people dying on the island before we’re able to say goodbye to them happens every damn day. So as much as this movie pretends the dictatorship isn’t a big deal, it’s the main thing that explains the separation between Andres and Marta.
Yeah I wished the movie dwelled on it more and why I think Gabbi design makes no sense given many Cubans would’ve seen a girl with colored hair and found it weird or gringaish. And takes the whole historic context badly
And is not like USA accepts people from Latin America with open arms she only entered USA thanks to a job contract, and that Cuba is literally closed from the world to the point they couldn't even get resources to make their own Covid vaccine because USA still mad they couldn't put their own dictatorship in that country
Yeah, and it also is a very obvious allegory to Celia Cruz’ history. She never got to get back to Cuba, to her family, because she was against Castro and so he never allowed her back. She always kept with her a little bottle with a bit of Cuban sand, and was buried with it

Honestly if the entire movie was the old man on a journey to see his past love with his animal sidekick I would have loved it! Gabi was beyond annoying. And was animated so differently it was distracting.
Actually I do understand why he might’ve not gone 5:30. Cuba for those unaware is a dictatorship. In those times it was worse. So if you left to the US getting back to Cuba was… hard. Since the country may think you’re a spy or even worse things. Even more if the embajada wanted you to plea against Cuba to be left in (which was required a lot back in the 60+) you couldn’t come back. So he might’ve never wanted to leave his home country and knew saying he loved her meant she would stay never to make her full big shot moment. Here a history lesson from your neighbor friendly Caribbean woman who has a Cuban brother in law
This isn't an exclusive cuban thing many people are prohibited to enter USA for literally no reason, my uncle from Brazil tried to go to USA for a trip but he was refused to enter without even an explanation why and like him many others from countries USA considers undesirable are forsaken to enter, and before you go he most have something wrong on his passport he makes trips around the world and even Europe without problems every year.
@@CoolMagmar Yeah but in Cuba given the dictatorship (which is not to be against your story but is way more serious) and messy history of the US and Cuba is way more difficult. Usually if is for visiting/vacation is easier from any other country. I can see why he was denied (racism and so on from law enforcement) but in this story is way more important to know the history. Cause like we saw this reviewer had a stick on their arse about it. As for Europe it can either be easier or harder. Your uncle is lucky he had no problem visiting Europe. Although it could be due to Brazil being part of Portugal back in colonial time.
@@dcscruz2970 I don't even think it's because of our shared past. A big part of our population has european descent, varying from region to region as to which ones are more commonplace. For example, the state of São Paulo is notorious for having many second and third gen descendants of Italian, Portuguese and Spanish peoples, who came to work there after the First or Second WW. This makes it easier for us to get visas and foreign passports that allow us to travel to places such as Europe itself. (Quite a long explanation, sorry. But I thought this tidbit would be of interest :>)
Gabi infuriated me in many ways. It's like they decided to slap as many bright colors onto her design as they possibly could, gave her the most irritating personality, and the most annoying voice. They did a *chefs kiss* and said that it was a masterpiece.
I agree. I hate how they really tried to shove the ‘im not like the other girls’ aspect in your face. She got on my nerves every time she opened her mouth
Sorta mini rant nothin important: She annoyed me of course but at the same time it's pretty easy for me to ignore it since she's a kid. I was really similar to her too at some point, so I don't quite blame her attitude entirely on her. She's a brat for sure, I wish her character was more fleshed out and.. creative.
@@geministrial950 As someone who works with kids NO, not all kids are like gabbi! Yes, a lot of kids are full on bright and loud, and can be annoying, but most of the tkme they're annoyinf cause they don't wanna stop playing, or they are just calling you, wants to show something they do, they are curious and wants you to do everything with them and don't know when to stop. Majoeiry of kids are not Gabbis, and the ones who are are UNBEARABLE!
I think that the thing regarding Marta was that only _she_ was hired by the company. To that we can add that, in theory, Marta would've been touring all the time, especially since we get in the beginning eavesdropper scene that she is fairly famous for her music. It would've most likely turned into a long distance relationship, and when it's one due to work, it might've been a really hard kind of relationship to maintain. Marta would, to some extent, have to choose between her career and love, and Andrés wanted to save her that trouble, so hence why he never said anything. At least that's how I understood it, but I get why some people would say it doesn't make sense
Which makes sense that he didn’t go since they only hired her. Cuba is an authoritarian dictatorship (I think that’s the term) and doesn’t like to let people leave. So he was probably not allowed outside of the country. I have had many family members die in Cuba without saying goodbye, and it’s a terrible feeling knowing that someone that helped raise you dying so suddenly without having a chance to even talk to them one last time.
@@clementine1169 Latin Americans in general can't enter USA easily, this isn't just a cuban problem but how USA treats immigrants they consider undesirable.
@@CoolMagmar yes i know but Cuba makes it especially difficult to go to any country. Cuba has a specific Visa/Passport you need just to travel into or outside of that's very expensive! A little off topic here but my dad once talked to this lady and they were on the topic of immigrants. She stated that said immigrants were taking all of their tax money (since she thinks that we don't have to pay taxes) and my dad explained that we still pay taxes and are not out to quote on quote "Steal American citizens' jobs." sorry for going off topic but i just wanted to mention the stigma around immigrants. Also sorry for the paragraph lol.
Gabi seems like the kid who would come up and beg you to play on your phone and if you said no she would cry and whine to her mom until she forced you to let you play
Seeing how many gravestones Gaby has in her closet and seeing she's as delicate as a bull in a glass shop, it wouldn't take much time to see Vivo's gravestone too in her petting zoo...
What if the guy was Andres’ neighbor, and the letter was delivered to him on accident and like- it’s a regular occurrence for whatever reason so at this point they don’t question when it happens.
Given Cuba is much like my home country, he must be the nosy neighbor and is quite normal your friend acts like a second you or like a family member if you die. Given he was so close to everyone I can see that being the case
Some times my neighbour hands me my mail when they're out and they see we got it. We all grew up like family so it's not nosy or intrusive. It could be that he noticed he got mail and knew the man was performing so he ran to gave it to him
@@helainanatasha7496 Yeah like that. Its usually really kind hearted and welcome! And that guy seems like he and Andres were good friends! Andres probably sees him as family too.
I don’t know if this happens in Cuba but I’m assuming it does. But we Latinos kinda “adopt” other people: specifically elders that have been left alone by their families… we sort of act like family to them. We feed them, do chores for them, keep them company and we make that bond and trust with them. And given the fact that Andres was very well known in town since his funeral was in the plaza (I think) and pretty sure that guy was his best bud and probably the closets person Andres had that could be as a family for him.
That's the thing. When she got signed and he did not, they had to break off the duo. He wouldn't have been allowed to perform with her and would have had to get a new job in a new country and he wouldn't have been able to take Vivo with him. Either way one of them would have had to sacrifice something. She would have had to stall her career and he would have had to abandon Vivo. Since he couldn't abandon Vivo and he wanted the best for Martha, he let her go. Sometimes that's the most loving thing you can do.
It's almost like we also had good and mediocre kids movies in the 90's too. Crazy that the 90's wasn't some flawless goldmine like people claim...right?
I tried to make sand angels once, and it was itchy and burned me. Like, it scratched me so bad it felt like a skin burn. Either that or it was a skin burn on top of it.
I could've dealt with the clothes and the purple hair IF she had a natural hair STYLE. Her hair looks like an anime character spent hours doing it. Why is it so SPIKY?!
I think another way they could have changed the last song with Marta singing was for her to acknowledge to the crowd that the love of her life just died and dedicate the song back to Andres. And replace all of the times the name Marta is sung with Andres's own name and maybe change a few of the lyrics to reference him and such. Anyways great video can't believe I didn't find it sooner :>
I've never seen this movie but the scene at 7:30 actually made me kind of sad, especially without any music playing and the monkeys facial expression it just wow. Idk it feels different to how a lot of other death scenes are in movies, especially kids movies
About the deaths thing, Hamilton is based on history so those characters are fated to die in the show eventually, Both Grandmother deaths drive the narrative in some sort of way, but the death in Vivo felt... off like he woulda been a better protagonist than Gabi but no he has to die for some strange reason!
The whole "they chipped in to help him fly to Miami" sounds..... familiar.... kinda like....a certain.... character Lin played...a character based off of a real person Lin wrote a musical about....a certain... ALEXANDER HAMILTON???
The reason she played the song for a crowd was in his memory. Yes, the song was for her, and about her, but Andres never wrote a song again because of this heartbreak. That song was the very last thing that not only Marta had of him, but the world. She didn't want to be the only one who remembered him for his music and love for her. That's the way I saw it when I saw the movie.
My little sister, who's 9, watched this movie and she *HATED* Gabby. She literally said "The movie was ok, but Gabby was SO cringy. She was like 'Im not like other girls!' and she also sang this cringe song that was like 'IMA DANCE TO THE BEAT OF MY OWN DRUM!"' and my sister started violently waving her arms while repeating 'Ima dance to the beat of my own drum.' I'm proud of my sister for hating her design and character. Edit: omg I didnt expect to get this many likes, thanks Edit 2: Wtf why did this get so many likes, this is probably my most liked comment lol
Ohoho I agree with your sis. Gabi's voice and singing voice was bad (in my opinion). She ruined the duo with Lin-- er Vivo! her singing voice was so flat that even auto tune cant seem to affect it... Man... I just hated her voice. "Beat of My Own Drum" or something was dreadful to hear at. Her design was too much too. My friend said that he hated her hair bc there's no logic in it, I hafta agree.
4:56 yes it does. They were very close as friends so Andres was worried that if he told Marta how he felt about her, it might make Marta give up her dream to stay with him by feeling pressured she'd be leaving someone who has strong feelings for her behind. It's not that simple, it used to be impossible for a Cuban to even leave Cuba unless they have some sort of celebrity status or have very good ties with the government. That's why usually when a Cuban does leave, it's so they can escape to another country. It wasn't until 2013 that law was finally abolished. So based on Andres and Marta's ages in the movie, they must have lived before the sort of 'lockdown' on Cuba had been lifted
I felt like Gabi was a bit.. too weird for a weird girl stereotype in this movie. I didn’t mind her much, i’ve seen worse, but like, can you stop pointing out WITH A SONG that you’re one of those “i’m not like other girls” kids?
it would be amazing if they just killed off gabi durin that snake scene like MY GOD i stopped watchin the movie durin at the swamp scene because i was so mad and done with her
I found Gabi to be, by far, the worst thing about this entire movie. She was bratty, annoying, and just overall was not an appealing character in general, but especially as a second main character. Also her song sucked. Vivo on the other hand was incredible, and Lin-Manuel Miranda was great in this, as usual.
there is NOTHING i hate more when a main character gets a companion that makes the story more about this companion than the main characters themselves. **cough** Sonic X **cough**
This is a movie where I've seen it multiple times yet i still forget moments like the chase scene where they end up on the sand boat. I really don't like Gabi's design and as someone whose been forced to listen to "Beat of My Own Drum" thanks to my little siblings, it's the catchy yet bad song.
Tbh I just love how the movie potrays the importance that music has in our cultre, and how it brings people together. The colorful scenes and 2D animation were beautiful, also. I just wish it was more of Andres's story instead of Gabi's.
Honestly if the death scene was instead when the two Separate friends reunite and got together, it would really be a better emotional scene (bonus if when they got there, that's when vivo witness his friends death) and Gabi being more empathetic and less loud would've been better too. That or changes overtime
Actually the random guy delivering the letter is realistic. Im from Cuba and you dont get Mail really specially not from the US. They way people from US send letters to those in Cuba is usually with people that travel back and forth, so maybe a friend, or just someone doing it for money. He looks like a friends so, he probably knew who the letter was from got excited and knew where he was going to be at that time hence hand delivery at a park. Whats not realistic is the ease in which traveling to miami was portrayed.
I think the one thing that I appreciated about Vivo above all (that kept me from giving up despite all the craziness) is that it's a movie with hispanic rep that isn't set in some pueblo style town, Mexico, or both (like Elena of Avalor, book of life, Encanto, etc). Vivo had a refreshing setting and theme and really interesting and colorful music, diversity and emotion.
@@wa1tandbleed04 Stereotypical? A lot of people live in places like that, they don't have huge metropolitan areas like in the US everywhere. My mom's from a pueblo in Nicaragua, and the sort of representation that setting gets in media is? Fine? Would you rather it just be a bustling city or something? Like the 10,000,000 movies that take place in New York?
@@hypotheticaltapeworm It's movie trope not an IRL one. Lots of movies take place in towns like that and it was nice that Vivo had a change in the setting. There's obviously nothing wrong with it, it's just overused in movies. Secondly I'm agreeing with OP'S original comment so if you dislike it talk to them
10:45 i too loved these kids (no, i will not reword that) They were hilarious af, and anyone who was against Gabi in some way, including Vivo (tho unfortunately, he grew fond of her), was good in my book
Honestly, I thought that the movie was going to be about a girl who dreams of becoming a superstar. (This is what I got from the "Running out of Time" video). She would then get invited to perform with Martha in Miami, but goes on a long musical journey to learn more about herself and other types of music. Also, I don't understand why they have Andres on the poster if he was only in the movie a short period of time.
I actually really loved this movie. So much that I must of watched it more than 30 times. I know all the songs off by heart and know almost every line of the movie. I know that a lot of people find it not so good. But I loved it, and so did a lot of people in my country. But loved the video, very well done

As a Cuban too this whole movie is frustrating to me lmao, especially after Encanto gave it a run for its money as another hispanic film (and coco did the same years ago by now) And I love how everyone is like “oh andres couldn’t go with marta because of the cuban government” but then not acknowledging that they probably wouldn’t have let him go to miami later either, especially not in one day Gloria Estefan saves this movie for me but I think it’s a travesty that they had so much rap in this movie but couldn’t get Chacal or Gente de Zona for it

@@CoolMagmar My father hasn’t been able to enter the us in 12 years because they always turn down his visa for no reason??

I hope none of you people are ever left alone with a child.. You'd lose your damn minds

Sorta mini rant nothin important: She annoyed me of course but at the same time it's pretty easy for me to ignore it since she's a kid. I was really similar to her too at some point, so I don't quite blame her attitude entirely on her. She's a brat for sure, I wish her character was more fleshed out and.. creative.

I’m pretty sure that is the main point the movie was trying to make!
She stated that said immigrants were taking all of their tax money (since she thinks that we don't have to pay taxes) and my dad explained that we still pay taxes and are not out to quote on quote "Steal American citizens' jobs."

But we Latinos kinda “adopt” other people: specifically elders that have been left alone by their families… we sort of act like family to them. We feed them, do chores for them, keep them company and we make that bond and trust with them. I think another way they could have changed the last song with Marta singing was for her to acknowledge to the crowd that the love of her life just died and dedicate the song back to Andres.
I think that "my own drum" was supposed to be bad, to show that vivo thinks he made a mistake.

So based on Andres and Marta's ages in the movie, they must have lived before the sort of 'lockdown' on Cuba had been lifted

it's such a bop but the lyrics make no sense
