Hopefully you won't get idiots that come on here and say "Oooh look at this guy - claims to know more than the Honda engineers about batteries / starters". You and I both know what you did is the correct answer, and all new cars should be like my Audi in regards to the start/stop - it's a hard on/off that remembers the last position/mode, instead of Honda/Toyota that is a "default on / toggle".
Thanks for the video. Installed the bypass switch yesterday and so far it's working as expected. You made it look easy and it was! I see that this is less $$ than other options doing the same thing.
Same here. In fact if I start truck and then realize I forgot something, run back in to the house and leave truck running, I will inadvertently hit the idle off button when I jump in to take off! Then can't figure out wth is wrong when I stop at the stop sign down the road. 😂
Definitely I agree with you 100% but we cannot forget, that starter is going to burn out a lot faster!!! Which of course puts more money in the manufacturer's pocket that's why all the manufacturers do this it's all about that dollar!!!!
“Do at your own risk”, my 2024 Ridgeline I made clear plastic small rectangular shims out of a thin wall container in the recycle bin, and squeezed several shims in around that switch, now it remains in the down position and no more auto-off. Cheap and easy. Clear plastic to not notice them. I tried to retrain the brain to always poke it after on, that was maybe 50% successful after half a year. Cold winters here can be -15/-20 degrees. Sometimes worse. Short in-town trips and microamp computer memory constant parasitic draw, Auto Unlock doors always looking for a key fob in proximity, we already have to trickle charge battery about every 3 weeks in winter withOUT adding a bunch of auto-stop restarts. Annoying no more !
I tell people its run by a computer and they do fail, my friend had it in a F-150, it shut the engine off at a stop light and when he had to move fast to not get rear ended the system failed to turn back on.... Let that sink in for a moment.
Good video. I may have done a few more car electronics than you Craig - I'd have tested the functionality before I snapped those 8 clips back in place. I've bought things like this that just didn't work out of the box before and I had to remove them. I will say this is about as easy as doing my wife's 2019 Highlander, except it required a fuseable link for the driver's side kick panel. Her car always being in "(A)" mode does not bother her in the least.
you're on the right track with reliability side of it, but it has more to do with flowing oil through the crankshaft bearings and connecting rod bearings during idle, versus engine completely stopped, not turning which means zero oil pressure. good fix!
@@mlj_the_shieldyup- wondered if someone was gonna state the obvious. This ridiculous agenda is costing more across the board than saving. It’s the ass backwards, illogical world they’re forcing on us.
Thanks for the great video! 👍Just a quick question, what is your thoughts about VCM Muzzler? Do you have it on your Ridgeline? Thanks in advance and keep those great videos coming!
@Radwinskee Thank you! I have not considered the VCM. Something for me to ponder. The idle shutoff was an easy choice for me personally. Wish I would have installed sooner.
My 2020 Ridgeline when stopped on a down hill grade at a stop light, if I forgot to to disable the auto start OR just a bit to quick to release the brake pedal then the truck rolls forward and WILL NOT restart! The fun continues when trying to shift to park and then use the start button!
Blame the eco warriors, they pushed for fuel efficiency etc etc etc so some auto manufacturers found the cheapest way to increase the numbers and auto start stop was born.
This cheap China made Amazon module fried my idle stop switch. Had to pay $350 for diagnostics and switch replacement at the dealer….. lesson learned I guess. Don’t buy cheap crap 😢
Oooh look at this guy - claims to know more than the Honda engineers about batteries / starters 😋 Really though, I wish people were more honest and just said "I don't like it and I want it turned off" instead of "it will wear down my car". These systems have now been in cars for well over a decade and there's been no widespread premature failures of starters, batteries, or whatever. On the flip side, however, I would say that there are little fuel-saving benefits to these systems _for most people_ and wish they were "opt in" rather than forced on. But just say you don't like it and want to get rid of it... don't BS us with mechanic-bility. It's your truck, you can do what you want with it.
Do you believe in lifetime transmission fluid? or 10,000 mile plus oil changes? I do not. I put one of these switches in my Passport (different brand) because I think it WILL prematurely wear out the starter and battery PLUS I hate the feeling of a delayed start.
@JP-jq1qx I would say no to lifetime transmission fluid changes. I did change my oil and differential fluid at the recommended intervals. Wasn't quite 10k miles for oil.
My wife's 3 year old Highlander Platinum AWD (2019 model - we bought brand new in Aug 2019) had her battery fail prematurely and was over $500 to get replaced. These start/stop systems require a EGM/EFB battery that's far more expensive, and the additional cost to replace far exceeds a typical $129 Autozone battery. In fact, people on Reddit have done estimated fuel savings with it enabled vice the upgraded battery charge, and the fuel savings nowhere near comes close. Huge fail. Our other 2016 vehicle's battery lasted over 8 years until I finally replaced it this summer. But, who am I to believe, my wallet or a rando commenter on the Internet? You ever replaced a starter in a car yourself? I have and understand how they work - do you?
"There's been no widespread..." Sounds like the lies we were told in November 2020 too. Well, it's not widespread doesn't mean it still doesn't happen; I have the receipts to prove it on ours.
Hopefully you won't get idiots that come on here and say "Oooh look at this guy - claims to know more than the Honda engineers about batteries / starters". Thanks for posting a video on the stop/ start bypass.
The S VCM Controller is also another must have item for Ridgelines and Pilots.
Thanks John. I'll check it out.
Im here because of you Amazon Comments. Thinking to buy for my 2016 H P Elite
Thanks for the information :)
Passports are sweet!
Thanks for the video. Installed the bypass switch yesterday and so far it's working as expected. You made it look easy and it was! I see that this is less $$ than other options doing the same thing.
Awesome! Glad to hear it was worth recording for others.
It's a really dumb setting / option. We should have been able to disable the auto stop feature through the settings menu!
That would be great for sure.
Exactly 👍🏼
I don't like this feature either but I've just trained myself to push the button when I start the car and now I don't even know I'm doing it.

Necessity is the mother of invention!
that's the first thing I did to my 2024 ridgeline shortly after I purchased it. Our 2021 nissan had the idle stop delete from the factory.
I tell people its run by a computer and they do fail, my friend had it in a F-150, it shut the engine off at a stop light and when he had to move fast to not get rear ended the system failed to turn back on.... Let that sink in for a moment.
Yes sir. Honda already performed recall service on my vehicle for this very issue you described.
i live in the city.too much gun fire to rely on auto restart at a traffic light on stop sign.installed this on my 2022 ridgeline.
Don’t blame you one bit!

Ask me about putting the Apple CarPlay in that Audi. It was a "nightmare's dream".
Good point. I did test it prior too install. I had to start and move the truck due to storm. Shhh, don't tell haha. I had the video paused :)
That first trim piece is a bear.
It's more difficult than one would think for sure.
They need to just reverse the switch and make it an option that you can turn on if you want.
This gets my vote ☝️

Excellent, thank you.
The AGM batteries' price difference far exceed the minimal amount of fuel savings. It's just another gimmick to placate the "Green" crowd.
Awesome brother thank you definitely leave the information thank you

@leebuck180 Yes, that button is nice until you're in a hurry. For me, anyway. Seems like a forever delay.
Yt NEVER tells me about your vids.
I'm not worthy haha. I keep plugging away here and there ;)
Honestly, i dont see the auto off/on being useful at any point. Unless you come across railroads often.
Would this work on a 2023 Honda pilot.
I had to ensure this was the correct one for my year and model. Just a bit of research will yield some options.
Does this affect your warranty?
@kathysmith4026 if the modification was linked to the failure, more than likely it would. Good question for the dealership.
I am willing to risk it.
I get it but, why not just hit the button to turn it off after you turn the motor on. It’s what I do.
It's just more convenient for me. I'm forgetful.
I typically forget when I’m hopping in the RL and putting it into reverse. Added the auto idle stop on my RL and couldn’t be happier.

I think I will just use the easy way to turn off the Idle stop function. Just press the damn button!!!!!!!!
Good luck

Did that for 2 years. PIA

I never minded it, except for it being unnecessary. One Honda tech developed his own and marketed it.
