    Welcome back to class! In this episode of MR101, we discuss the various approaches one might take toward getting started in model railroading. Should you get a train set, or buy pieces separately? What are the benefits of each approach? What do you need to get started, anyway? Why are some of those models so expensive? Is it really worth the money to buy those expensive models?
    There is a lot to consider!

    The HO scale diesels are considered easier to put on the track because they have fewer axles and some steam can't take the 18 inch curves especially on a grade uphill, I found smaller Steam from high quality standards just as easy as diesels, even though they have more moving parts. I would recommend either getting a small low axle count steamer such as a 2-6-0 a 2-8-0 a 4-6-0, a 2-6-2 etc. And diesels with small wheel bases which will run on 18 inch curves

    I advise everyone to go for an N-scale train set from Atlas for their first model train set. And always (I mean 'always') keep it down to a relatively short 4-axle diesel locomotive so that it is nice and compact. The first train set always gets pushed around here and there because the person is still 'learning' how to get things done right, so it takes time, and the layout is left 'unfinished' for a very long time. For this reason it needs to be as small as possible, and that means N-scale.

    I find it strange that advice given is always based as people will start with the old analog, DC locos, my kids have a far better understanding of digital control than analog, you can purchase beginner kits in DCC, and for the most part DCC is far less complicated to operate than Analog, I personally come from the analog era, and my kids having no interest in the hobbie have now become extremely interested, because the movement of the locos have become more realistic and (prototypical) they enjoy programming and messing with computers, we now live in the world of plug and play. I think sometimes DCC is viewed as the realm of the expert and super experienced modeler. it is now possible to plug into your computer using DCC as a router, for less money than the cost of a mid range locomotive. You guys do a real great job at educating both the beginner and I have no doubt the long termer as well. The other thing I find rather strange, as modelers we generally strive to re-create a time and place, or some of us even get adventurous and add branch lines on to existing rail yards to show where the line was supposed to go but for what ever reason it never did, my point is this, if I was to create a modern rail road today, you could run steam locomotives and era carriages, this has become a lucretive business on some British, south African , Australian And surly American main lines.,Heritage railways operating on modern main line is a prototypical event, and probably more common than the president of the US using the presidential train. I am reminding people that at some point we were kids and we dreamed of being the engine driver, and living the Casey Jones life style, sometimes we need to run "toms the tank engine" on our CSX layout, if only to remind us not to take it all to seriously and remember to have fun.
    keep up the blogs I enjoy watching and listening. thank you for sharing with us.

    • @karlrovey
      @karlrovey 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Most people start with analog simply because it's the simple loop layout they get at Christmas with an engine and a couple cars that gets them interested in model railroading. Almost all of these are analog.

    • @nevillemadden5210
      @nevillemadden5210 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@karlrovey Also, the average parent wouldn't know the difference between them, and most likely wouldn't be aware that there are different types (Analogue and Digital). And don't forget, the Old Original DC (which was really an Analogue System), was DC as in Battery Operated Only, and Not AC (unable to run on Battery Power), or AC/DC (being able to run on either Power Supply: Battery or Electricity).
      Additionally, they'd purchase whatever was recommended by the Shop Assistant that might not even know the difference between AC/DC Power, and only relate the term to ACDC (the Band): They have to look at the Specifications.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nevillemadden5210 It's correct that batteries provide DC, but you seem to be under the impression that AC means not-battery and that's not right. The electricity that comes out of the wall socket is AC but that can be converted into DC, e.g., to power DC trains.

      Paying for quality is always a good idea in this hobby. I have those cheap and cheesy Bachmann sets that are practically worthless except for putting them under the Xmas tree. I guess the N Scale one isn't too bad (Spectrum series), but if I were to ever do something serious, I would absolutely build it piece by piece, buying only the most relevant (era and region-specific) high quality locomotive(s) and rolling stock I could afford.

      tsgmultimedia yep indeed, one thing t mention would be keeping only a small layout at home, but join a local club. I didn't have much space, or money, so I bought that 350$ kit, and a Soundtraxx decoder, and some freight cars by Atlas, Athearn, walthers, etc; and join the Northwest Crossing MRRC. So I don’t want this train to get messed up bcuz I don’t want the things that happened to my other train when I was 8 to get messed up like broken railings and such so I’m trying to take good care of it and be responsible but what sucks is a don’t have anywhere else which sucks. And my mom also says their expensive or waste of money or anything but she doesn’t understand that I want a model railroad because when I’m older I want to be a engineer for UP and if the trains are to futuristic I probably won’t be a engineer (I don’t like futuristic vehicles they look like eggs) so if I have a model railroad I can be the own engineer and have anyway I want so yeah but hopefully I’ll make one, one day,but I don’t know how,if anyone has advice please give some,thanks have a good day

    Re: The cost to get a decent starting train set, a recommendation from me. I recently bought a new Bachmann HO GP7 from Micro-Mark on sale for only $68. It's got a decoder, LED lights, fine scale handrails, nice paint job, and some other separately applied detail parts. It even runs on DC. And runs well. Add a few ScaleTrains boxcar kits on sale for $10 each, and it's a great start for very little money. A lightly-used power pack from eBay and some good used track from a train show will complete the set up, easily under $200 for a beginner's oval layout.

    When I first decided to get back into model railroading, I first decided I wanted to run N gauge due to the amount of room at hand(it actually got much bigger than originally expected.....go figure LOL
    Then I needed to decide on a "train set"and expand or buy components and build as I go.I think the most important thing I did was visit my local train shop (yup, we actually have a trains only shop, although not the biggest, it is local)and look around and ask questions.Since my local shop sold PECO flex track,turnouts etc. I decided to go this route as I would always a source for track material (running code 80)
    I did look at that KATO pre-made track and was totally turned off by this product, too toy like(although I know it has a place in model RRing) and was not crazy about the Atlas stuff(just me)
    So in the end,I`m completely happy with my choice in track products,no regrets.
    My layout (not yet finished)has a bunch of turnouts...about a million or so and Tortoise Switch machines to match(at least where I have little access...but still a lot of `em !!
    Man....things sure have changed since my HO Tyco days, and that was a shock when I started doing research and that thing called DCC !
    But I tell you, this is a great hobby!!

    Great series. Wish I had it when I started out. A couple of comments: 1) I started with a cheapish starter set and while it wasn't great, it got me going. When I understood what was involved I began to upgrade little by little. I think it's important to get going right when the energy and enthusiasm is high (especially for kids). Go home and start right away. I see families at train shows walking out with starter sets and I think it's a great idea. 2) I understand the use of "guys." But please be aware that some of the guys are gals. Women modelers like myself sometimes have difficulty being taken seriously.

    I recommend staying away from Life-Like and Bachmann as their cars and power packs are mostly DC only. You can spend $100-200 on these brands, or look at Kato, Atlas, Athearn and other brands for cars, locos and track/turnouts which will work well with almost any other brands EXCEPT Life-Like or Bachmann. The couplers on the better brands are prototypical, have better detail and you can spend $200 - $300 for an basic expandable DCC beginner system such as the Digitrax DCS51 Zephyr or an NCE PowerCab. Again, the cheaper brands have horn hook couplers, little detail and you would have to pay more to convert the couplers to prototypical couplers. Basically, you get what you pay for! Another great beginner choice is going with flex-track and turnouts from the start so you can lay out the track the way you want it.

    I think a lot of the current model train stuff is extremely overpriced. Not that this was ever a super cheap hobby, per se, but it's gotten ridiculous now. I'm not paying over 100 dollars for a locomotive that's probably like 6-7 inches long, sorry. If it was G Gauge or something that might be more understandable. As for that low end set you showed, I wouldn't buy that one simply because it just came with like 3 cars. A few years back I bought Bachmann's Chattanooga, which is a decent mid-range set in terms of quality, detail, and what's included, for 75 dollars after using Hobby Lobby's 40% off coupon! So there are ways to get good deals. Not everything has to be bought new either, of course, but make sure you're buying from a reputable seller, naturally.
    I actually saw a building on Amazon that was like 40 bucks! In HO scale! Unpainted, of course. Something that's smaller and less complex than any model car kit. They're nuts.
    I'm just glad I still have all my trains from the 90s when my brother and I started when we were kids. Some of the engines need work, but they still function. I've got a box to an old Bachmann 3 dome tank car with a price tag from K-B Toys (talk about something else long gone) for $4.99. The prices now are way high, even accounting for inflation. It seems to me the companies are just charging what they think they can get away with and since some people are willing to pay these insane prices, for whatever reason, they keep doing it.
    I've also heard the prices are high due to less of the product being made. Might also be an issue with people demanding more detail - the rivet counters, etc. Unfortunately this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I've heard from folks that this hobby is actually dying, which is sad. Most of the people in it are older, and and not enough younger people are coming into the hobby. Could just be lack of interest and exposure, what with all the videogames and other forms of entertainment these days, and how distant real trains are to many of our daily lives. When I was a kid having a train set was a lot more common. Still, with Thomas around you'd think more young people would be coming in, but most of them don't go past that stage, it seems. In any case, the prices aren't helping the matter.
    As for my current situation I'm low on cash AND space. So unfortunately I can only really break out the trains and run them occasionally. My brother and I were actually getting a layout started when we were kids before we moved out. Simple setup with a loop, and 2 switches so there was a long straight on one side, with one end leading to the engine house, on a plywood board. Had the track and surface down, and a mountain built from paper mache over chicken wire. SOMEONE threw the mountain away but everyone claims it wasn't them, of course.
    Hoping at some point to have more room and finally make a layout again, and if I do buy any more stuff it's going to be a big sale, deal, or used.
    As for railroads and era, well I am not trying to recreate any particular area, and if there's anything anachronistic it's part of a museum or tourist line. :P
    Heh, got on a bit of a tangent, there. Anyway, I have enjoyed this and your other 101 videos.

      @tsgmultimedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's quite a lot to read there! I agree about the cost of things, too. I think that issue is a combination of prices being high AND the fact that wages/salaries have not kept up with the rate of cost of living increases. Therefore, people naturally have less money for hobbies.

    • @Benjamin0119
      @Benjamin0119 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      tsgmultimedia Yeah I got a little more long-winded than I expected, heh.
      Yeah it's true across the board that wages and salaries haven't kept up with the cost of living and a lot of goods in general. The train stuff has gotten more expensive compared to itself and other things. And yeah when you're short on cash, hobbies and recreation take a backseat. Hopefully it will turn around sooner than later and I hope we can get more new people interested in model trains.

      I have spent some serious money in the railroading hobby and I will agree. This has to be the most ridiculously overpriced hobby there is by far ,but the sad thing is that people like me who know it's ridiculously overpriced will still pay those stupid prices and that's why they'll continue to stay that expensive. I'm part of the problem.

    • @nevillemadden5210
      @nevillemadden5210 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't mean to be critical, but you,re not actually paying (over $100) for a Loco that's 6-7 inches long. You're paying for the Internal Components.
      Just compare it to a Computers, Laptops, iPads.
      Take for example a Desktop Computer that you might pay (let's say) $1000 for. A similar type of Laptop, but with better Technology, might cost you (let's say) $1800, but the equivalent to the Desktop as an iPad might cost you (let's say) $400 and the equivalent iPad to the Desktop might cost you (let's say) $700
      The is roughly the size of an A5 Book. So, It's NOT the Shell of he iPad you're paying for, it''s What's Inside, and What It Can Do.
      Now compare an Eqivalent DC Loco to the same in DCC.

Once the bug bites and interest is solidly established, the motivation to find work around a neighborhood, then a job of some sort could be very strong in able to afford the new expensive stuff.

    Why choose a time and place when you can create your own fantasy location and custom livery to make it your own and use more types of locomotives and rolling stock ? Low end train sets are good for locomotives and rolling stock and those with a limited budget which most channels make it seem like you need to be a trillionaire to get into or get back into the hobby, so what low end sets are available? Low end train sets tend to be more reliable and durable, for example in some cases I'd rather buy an old Tyco, Mantua, or cheaper set than the more expensive sets which are as fragile as cheap glass
