Their talk about the “clowns in a bug-type gym” actually got me curious as to why harlequins were used, so I did some google searching. After remembering that Burgh and his gyms have always focused on art, I think I can see the link, but I still feel like harlequins weren’t the best choice. Maybe if Game Freak made something like a “fashionista” trainer class that would wear bug/insect inspired clothes (like a dress that looks like it’s made of spider silk), it’d be more fitting
I reckon it's because of ladybugs. One of the most common varieties is called a harlequin.
I dont know why, but clowns always bugged me as a kid.
I'm curious why they didn't just take the Artist trainer class and put it in the gym, or at least put *some* of them in. I like clowns, but it makes little sense compared to other trainer classes in gyms lol. At least in BW1, the clowns/harlequins matched the aesthetic of the gym, but the gym in BW2 is more cocoony.
The electric gym is already that gym tho

31:20 I swear the Trainer AI in Gen V is programmed to know how to “kill confirm” - that is, they will often use a weaker but more accurate move, or a move with priority, if they know it will KO the opponent. Pulse constantly blacking out to that Riolu’s Quick Attack likely isn’t a coincidence.
They do, though in some generations, it doesn't check for accuracy or priority. Also, it can get false positives or false negatives based on damage rolls.
This is my favorite Pokemon speedrun from gdq! Pulse is so much fun to watch, and the banter with the couch feels super comfortable.

Same! I've had a party in my head I wanted to use. I never used excadrill and only used lignite my first playthrouh of the first game which I never finished. Those 2 are going in my party

I remember playing this game when I was younger, when I was just a novice. I trained my Emboar in Black 2 all the way up to level 100 just to fight Iris because I didn’t know any better. It’s great to see this game run!

I have never used a Tepig before, because I absolutely hate Pignite. However, I totally agree that Oshawott and Snivy are horrible, and I didn't want to use them either, so I used Oshawott to get me to the Floccesy Ranch and basically just used a Mareep as my starter.

About 3:16:00 I never understood that about legendary Pokemon. Their all pretty easy to one shot with a decent Pokemon using a decent move
cupcake kitten the ice type on that legendary just makes it so easy to massacre......

I'm glad they made the game's penultimate legendary in USUM a decent challenge, despite being easily cheesed with Sucker Punch.
Drilbur is one if the most badass non-legendary Pokémon that exists
So how does having multiple cartridges work?
It has to do with the amount of steps that need to be taken, in order for the rng to spawn the dust cloud with drilbur. The other cartridge had a save with the precise amount of steps taken for that rng manip to work.

No. But it is necessary to do during marathons for most Pokemon games.
No, the only reason they did that is because it was a marathon run with no resets allowed, so he had to be able to use those cartridges when certain RNG dependent parts of the run came up. It does not count as a real run because real runs for all games have to be single segment (meaning they can't splice parts together, or start from other save files)
TL;DR No it doesn't count, they do it this way so the run is actually entertaining and not just constant resets or failed runs.
No this isn't a valid speedrun for leaderboards. These games are to RNG heavy for that in marathon. Normally he would have reset and started a new run but obviously that doesnt work for a marathon so they make multiple safety saves.
Well, he wasn't aiming for the record at all. It obviously woulda been invalid for a WR attempt, but this is GDQ, only a showcase event for charity, the important thing is just seeing games "done quick" even if the runners gotta use some backup strats.
You know, for the sake of the show, he just couldn't reset the whole run live.
It doesn't count as an RTA speedrun but it's a marathon so it's better to not have to reset the entire run.

I think it has to do with the start time and date of the DS. The RNG of the game runs on the exact time and date to set the seed for data based on the start. Idk if that's how best to describe it, but basically if you start from the same time and the same date every time then you always get the same starting RNG.

When runners say they get plus 1 attack, speed etc.. does it literally mean just 1 point to that stat?
Plus one means the stat has been raised by one "stage" so it is being multiplied by 1.5. Plus two would be multiplied by 2 and so on. Lowered stats multiply by values less than 1. Google stat stages for more info.
I just finished watching the x/y run with the pineapple on pizza bit so when they brought it up here I got war flashbacks

The 2 gyms in gen 5 are great but the best gym of all in pokemon is the 4th gym in Platinum, It's a GYM an actually Gym in a Pokemon Gym. Mindblown!

As far as I know the only game where picking the girl save time is HeartGold and SoulSilver all other games is just preference.

There actually is a Burger Shop right next to my appartement that serves pineapple on Burgers. They marinate and grill the Meat for this one in Teriyaki Sauce and its pretty good.
