      I also got into the DQ series thanks to DQ8. Honestly I think most people outside of Japan got into the series because of DQ8. Prior to DQ8, none of the other DQ games released outside of Japan received much fanfare or attention and DQ for a long time was a series with just a cult following until DQ8 changed all that. Square-Enix promoted the hell outta it outside of Japan & even included a playable demo of FF12 inside each copy of DQ8 as an attractive bonus plus it was the first DQ game to see Akira Toriyama's iconic artwork & character designs fully realized on screen thanks to its cel-shaded animated full 3D look and given that Toriyama's Dragon Ball franchise is a bonafide global phenomenon that made DQ8 even more of a must buy once gamers instantly recognized his work in trailers for the game. DQ8 was a legit game-changer for the series✌

  • @alexperaza9475
    @alexperaza9475 3 ปีที่แล้ว +158

    So, small detail about 3 (and 9 for that matter) that often gets overlooked: you can have UP TO four members in your party, but it's up to you. The number of party members is optional. You can also just have three characters, which bumps up the difficulty a bit. Or two for a tougher challenge. Or you can go for a solo quest, which is like the crazy hard version (but hey, it's actually really fun because it forces you to really pick and choose your gear carefully).
    Also, the fewer members you have, the more experience you get for defeating the same monsters. So even though you're increasing the difficulty by having fewer members, the trade off is that you'll level up a bit faster, which is VERY useful once you start encountering tougher monsters.

    • @Dw7freak
      @Dw7freak 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Correct. It's fully possible to beat the entire game with just Loto.

    • @sdtrawick
      @sdtrawick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      What I really like is that the game gives you more experience with less party members as a way to incentivize the difficulty. Also it makes sense that it's a set amount of experience that gets shared with each party member, so less members means less sharing.

    • @Dahras1
      @Dahras1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Vegesther I mean, sure, instant kill/paralyze suck in a solo run, but you can also max out your Luck, which reduces ailment rates. Furthermore, DQ3 doesn't do Game Over. If you're Solo, the worst that can happen is that you get ported back to a Church, and since you only have one party member, you don't have to spend gold to resurrect anyone.
      I'm not saying that the solo run isn't hard/swingy, but they do a lot to make it manageable, which is impressive considering the fact that the game wasn't even designed to be played primarily solo.

    • @cecilj4129
      @cecilj4129 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't know about 3 but in 9 it's really easy to do a solo run with the right class and talent build

    • @darkdragonmedeus705
      @darkdragonmedeus705 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Furthermore, the narrative implies the main protagonist solo'ing the game is what's the actual canon way to play the main story at least. The villains make comments such as "Defeated by a mere mortal" as opposed to "Defeated by mortals" and what not. Or at least this is the case for IX, but unsure about III.

  • @user-nr2cs2rq7h

It also felt much easier, especially with that shard radar, and grind sessions were much shorter. They completely removed the Sim town sidequest with multiple final towns based on the residents in favor of that monster town that did basically nothing. They also removed all the fmv cutscenes and didn't put new ones in in their place. The Deja dance scene and opening just felt empty without it. Dragon Quest VI has a great story, and very interesting quests, lore and epic boss fights. DQ VI (SNES version) is my favorite in the series along with V and III. Also, it's the most difficult game in the series, and this is actually the main reason why some players don't like it so much. The truth is, they get frustrated early in the game, and don't even let the story unfold to its full potential. The game is also the longest in the series, and the longer you play it, the more interesting it gets. DQ V is a great game as well, but it's too easy. As an old-school RPG veteran, I really like games that give you a challenge. DQ VI really makes you think strategically. The game also has a lot of well hidden items and secret treasures. Also, it has better variety of items, skills, spells, classes, characters, modes of transportation than the previous ones. And you can recruit almost every monster. No wonder when it originally came out, it was an instant hit, and the best selling game in Japan.

    DQ 9 is easily my favourite as well as one of my top all time games. That feeling of an open world with such an engaging story, as well as the incredible soundtrack.. I just don't see it beat.
    The customisability of the party members was amazing and I got so attached to them that in subsequent playthroughs, I remade the exact same party members. The way the game sectioned off the story into different parts while you searched for these fruit, the engaging stories for each section every single time, the tense fights, the memorable characters.. there's too much to list off. Emotionally, the game was a 10/10 and some of the tragic parts of the story played on my heartstrings more than once.
    If I had to pick a single remake for the switch, I'd choose DQ 9 in a heartbeat. If ever it happens, I'll pay anything.
    I will say though, the two other DQ games I'd love to try are 3 when its HD remake is released as I see myself easily getting attached to the characters.

    I can understand why DQ7 would be rated so low, I definitely wouldn't recommend it as an entry point into the franchise, but for anyone who's played and enjoyed a few of the other games already, I implore you to at least give this one a chance. When I first got it at launch, I played about 10 hours in and then set it down because a bunch of other things came out that drew away my attention. Coming back to it recently since I was trying to clear out some of my backlog, I wasn't able to put the game down. It basically takes everything I love about Dragon Quest as a series and expands on it to its most logical extreme.
    The defining elements of DQs storytelling are its strong character writing and the fleshed-out mini-arcs of each town you visit along the journey. Generally the greater overarching plot will be an incredibly simple 'save the world from the demon lord' story, just enough to serve as an excuse to have you visit all these interesting places and experience what really feels like a grand adventure. DQ7 takes this method of storytelling and does it better than any other game in the series.
    Each island has its own largely self-contained story, you get to know all these NPCs in the past and then have to figure out what you need to do to save their home so it isn't destroyed in the future. Once you succeed and go back to those places in the present, you get to see just how your actions influenced those islands. Some of them will have vague legends of being saved by a group of young heroes long ago, some have completely forgotten what happened back then, some have catalogued your exploits in great detail and their descendants basically worship you when you come back, It's such a magical experience unlike anything I'd ever played before. I found myself going out of my way to talk to every NPC I could, then using party chat to see what my party members' would comment about their dialogue. There are entire optional story arcs that have no greater significance than just being a really neat thing to find and watch play out if you go out of your way to find them. There are connections between islands that come up in the most unexpected places, and lots of minor threads tying back together over the course of the game to make it all feel like such a rich and well-developed world.
    I know not everyone has the time or patience to sit down and play through a massive 100+ hour long RPG, it's a huge investment, but I guarantee you this game is well worth it. It managed to dethrone DQ5 as my favorite DQ, and I hold it in similarly-high regard to what Jon describes in this video, so that should speak volumes about 7's quality.

  • @RPG_Hacker

    I really wish I could get into classic DQ, but the battle system just kicks my ass so hard and frustrates me to no end. DQXI is the only one I actually ended up enjoying not only for its story, but also its gameplay, so by default, it has to be my favorite. I did complete VIII and enjoyed many things about it, but man, the gameplay just frustrated me so much that I don't ever want to play it again.
    That being said, I didn't know DQI was actually a 1 vs 1 game. I might have to give that one a chance. All my frustrations with the DQ battle system stem entirely from party-based battles, so maybe I could actually enjoy the first game.

      @@I_was_a_Bullfrog It's true that it's a standard turn-based battle system, if by that you mean many games use the exact same one. In fact, Dragon Quest isn't the only series I have these issues with. I have the same frustrations with almost any game using a variation on this exact battle system, including Final Fantay I to III and Bravely Default I.
      In contrast to that, if a game adds just one minor tweak to this battle system, I'll usually end up being totally fine with it. Dragon Quest XI and Bravely Default II are two examples for that, both of which I really enjoyed.
      I probably won't be able to fully convey what it is that frustrates me about this battle system and why, because it's a very "me" problem that's heavily dependent on my own personality type, but I'll at least give it a try. I have severe anger management issues that especially affect me during gaming. Getting angry a lot can severely hinder my enjoyment of a game. One of my hugest triggers for anger is being frustrated, and one of the things that can frustrate me very easily in games is unpredictability and randomness.
      I believe this is the core reason for why I can't handle the classic Dragon Quest battle system. In it, you select the actions for all your characters once at the start of a turn. Afterwards, all participants carry out their actions in a random order. This causes multiple issues for me. One is that it makes battles feel kinda slow and inactive, because you only actually input battle commands once and then have to wait for them to be carried out before you can input more commands. Depending on the game and enemy encounter, this can actually take literal minutes. DQVIII in particular had some nasty random encounters with so many enemies in them that you had to wait an eternity before you could do anything again. Anyone remember fighting nine mummies at the same time? I definitely do. Anyways, this slow pace isn't very exciting to me, and sooner or later I'll get frustrated by having to wait so much. Good old Goopy Goblin Gamer Brain™.
      However, an even bigger issue for me lies in the randomness itself. I know that characters in Dragon Quest games usually have some kind of speed attribute that greatly influences what order they act in, but it's not set in stone, because the games also always apply a random offset on top of that each round, so slower characters can actually end up going first, and that is my single biggest issue with this battle system, because it makes the entire thing feel very unpredictable and random to me. I never know when each of my characters is going to act, and as a result, I always feel like the enemy has an edge over me. Very often, turns don't play out the way I had anticipated it, which I perceive as the games kicking my ass. I don't feel in-control and, as a result, feel overwhelmed by the game.
      This issue makes me not enjoy the battles very much, which usually starts a vicious cycle, as I try to avoid them, which will just make me underleveled in the long run. This is especially bad in the games that feature a very high random encounter rate, because due to me avoiding battles, even regular random encounters can and will eventually become a threat to me, which just strengthens the frustrations I was already having with the battle system up to that point. Often times, grinding and leveling up is the only reliable way out of this situation, but unfortunately grinding is just yet another thing I don't enjoy, especially since in many of these games, it takes so long to actually get a level-up. So instead, I will usually just drag my way under-leveled party through the game, facing way too hard bosses, often losing a lot of progress in a Game Over, making me even more frustrated and feeling even more overwhelmed.
      Anyways, to briefly get back to the battle system itself, here's a few situations that I will experience very commonly and that frustrate to no end:
      -One of my characters is dead and needs to be revived, so I target them with my white mage. However, due to the random battle order, two monsters actually end up attacking first and kill my mage, leaving me with two dead party members and in a situation that it's almost impossible to recover from.
      -I have a dead party member and want to revive and heal them in the same turn (because revival in Dragon Quest games is usually pretty weak and only gives like 20% HP), so I target the dead member with two characters. One for reviving and one for healing. However, due to the random battle order, the healing character actually ends up going first, thus wasting a turn.
      I feel like a lot of these issues could be somewhat alleviated by me grinding, because when your party is over-powered (or at least on par with the enemy), a single wasted turn usually doesn't matter too much, but as I mentioned above, I just don't enjoy grinding itself, thus the experience I'm having with these games will usually get worse the longer I'm playing. That's what I meant by "the battle system kicks my ass". As I said, it's a very "me" problem, but I assume that other people with a similar personality type might have the same issues.
      Anyways, this is where Dragon Quest XI comes in. The game makes only a single minor tweak to the battle system, but this tweak actually ends up meaning the world to me. In DQXI, characters carry out their actions immediately. This not only greatly shortens the inactive phases during battles, since you will get to input commands much more frequently, but it also alleviates most of the frustrations I was having with them, since selecting a command with a character now means it will definitely get carried out, making everything much more predictable for me. These battle systems can still feature a lot of randomness, but it's randomness that I can stomach and deal with more easily. Since more and more of Square Enix's RPGs migrate to this latter variation of the battle system (I already mentioned Bravely Default II, but Octopath Traveler is yet another one), I imagine they're seeing the issues people like me are having with the traditional one, but Dragon Quest remakes are likely still going to keep using it, so unless Square Enix will start providing some options in them, I don't think I'll be able to play them.

    Out of all the Dragon Quest games to get me into the series, it was a spin-off game: Dragon Warrior Monsters (back in the late 90's). It was because it was like Pokemon (which I needed something in-between Pokemon Red/Blue - Pokemon Silver/Gold). After I beat the game on my Gameboy Color, I read Nintendo Power and the main games (Dragon Warrior 1 and 2) were on Gameboy Color so I begged my mom to get it for me. Luckily, it was summer so she made a deal and made me babysit my 2 year old sister at the time and thus began my TRUE adventure into the franchise

    The only games I've completed were Dragon Quest Builders 1 and 2, which I really love. Those games introduced me to Dragon Quest, so I got XI on Switch and it was really fun, but I stopped playing it, think I got really busy with work...
    I got 1, 2, and 3 on the Switch last night and playing through 1. Pretty fun so far. Idk where I've been all these years, but I'm happy to catch up with the series now.

    Im playing ix again rn for like the 5th time and its just as good every time. I love goin around and collecting mats n crafting. So glad they put that in xi.
    IV is by far my fav. I played dq since i got the 1st dragon warrior with nintendo power n it was what really got me hooked on rpgs. III was the next one i played and maaaannn..was it next level at the time. Orochi will always be stuck in my mind as it was the coolest dragon id ever seent. Then came iv.....my ohhhh myyyy. My childhood summed up in 1 game. It was like a good book crossed with a game and i replay it at least once a year ever since.
    Finally i found II at one of our local game stores we didnt go to much. My neighbor owned a store so i always had everything...except ii for some reason. Idk how much my dad paid, but i know i had it a few weeks n couldnt figure out how to get past the dragon spire with the cape lol. I eventually called nintendo power 1900 number n was able to move on
    😂😂😂 dont think my parents were happy with that one lol.
    V and vi i eventually played on emulator after i found loosely translated english versions well before the ds was even thought of n mann those were fun. I didnt believe v was really dq lol. Vii n viii i played on my 3ds. I tried vii on ps back in the day but i put it down n forgot about it. Easy to do with that game. I finally forced myself to beat it with a few breaks in between. 95hrs later....its done n never again lol.
    Viii n xi...masterpieces...this is long enough...just masterpieces....ill leave it at that lol.
