Thank you for this. I’m hoping more people get into DQ. I’ve shared your video with my friends. Is that someone singing to Sugiyama’s music at the end?! 👏🏽👏🏽
I believe I was part of the Discord, but I left or was kicked for inactivity. I do deserve it but I will join in my own terms and will join once I complete XI.
Wish there was an honorable mention of DQ9 for the DS. That game was goddamn massive storywise along with the sheer amount of content packed in. It really pushed the DS to its limits on what a game could be on that system. Strangely enough, I really think it can be considered a hidden gem because I NEVER hear people talking about it. Long amazing story, huge post game, crafting, many side quests, a lot of different classes, expensive world like 8 with on field monsters, and you create your own party from scratch (which some people don’t like but I find the complete customization for whatever team you want to be awesome awesome). Definitely the game I put the most hours into for the DS.
DQ IX is one of the best DQ games I've played, and one of my favorites with VIII and XI. I think that is refreshing to create all your party members, including the main character, and to see how they look like with their equipment, etc. The story is also pretty nice. I'm expecting for a Switch remake of DQ IX, I think it deserves it
It deserves better because even though what they did graphically was impressive for the DS...it's still the DS and looks like crap (for lack of a better way of explaining it). I was never a fan of that handheld even though it was home to a lot of RPGs. The console just felt cheap to me. Plus the screen on mine had a weird yellowish tint to it which gave all my games a soft sepia tone look.
@@veteran0121 That was probably a defect on your particular console, the yellow tint that is. I owned a DSi XL for a very brief period of time and returned it almost immediately precisely because of that, seeing as I have a regular DSi with great screens to compare it to.
This is exactly why the game was a semi disappointment, having fleshed out characters with their own stories is so much better in a DQ game. In 9 you just have 3 puppets you cant get attached to.
@@tlotpwist3417 this, while novel in concept the fact that your party members have nothing to contribute in a conversation made me feel like they might as well be monster companions like in V, I've never played III before but I imagine that one's going to have a similar problem to IX when it comes to the party,Story wise though luckily IX was still very strong with a lot of fun and interesting NPCs. Still honestly I'm hyped to get my hands on the remake of III when it comes to switch, haven't played a DQ game in a long while!
Yea cause the promotional advertisement was like everywhere. I also began with DQ 8 as my first game and still replay the game every year or two on the PCSX2 Emulator on PC I freaking love that game. I personally never enjoyed DQ 9 after I've played 8. No reall characters (you create them and they don't have any story to contribute to) the story overall didn't feel as exciting to me and most importantly the downgrade from the graphics for me was a big disappointment back then.
@@ACrossingSage24 ima play with them more tm I’m so hyped I’m the martial artist my friend Drew is the Priest my friend Tristan is gonna be warrior or thief I think and my cousin Ant is gonna be the mage I’m so hyped to play it I’m about to play 8 rn I wish I had an Sd card for my Ds or I’d be playing 7 rn
I remember the first time I learn about Dragon Quest was your “Why Erdrick should be in Smash” video, then after the Hero reveal and the fighter came out. I did the demo back around Summer 2019. A year later, I take a break on Zelda and Persona, so I got the full game of DQXI and now I liked it.
Not to mention the Tickington missions, which are good for introducing newcomers to some of the previous games' worlds, and are incredible fanservice to long-time players.
I disagree. Because dragon quest is not an on-going saga. Final Fantasy is the same way. And in both cases, I suggest newcomers play the first three of both franchises.
I loved how his avatar looked like. It looked like he stayed up all night playing Dragon Quest. His current design looks more Dragon Quest, but the og had a special charm.
Saw Dragon Quest III is getting an HD-2D remake from the people behind Octopath, reminded me of this video and it being one of your picks. Hope you enjoy playing and keep up the quality content creation bud
When i was like 4 my dad bought me a Disk on my PS2 with like 90 demo games on it . One was DQ8 my fav to this day . Now i play this game on my 3DS i am on the final battle. Love your videos sackchief . Can t wait for DQ12!
Neat to see you finally updated your list on the best DQ games! So far XI S is still one of my all time favorite RPGs and I’m so glad I got introduced to it thanks to Smash (and your videos) but when I have the time I’ll give some of the other games a go ;)
DQ8 is definitely the first one i’ve ever played, by far my favorite in the series! I wish they would remaster this bad boy or just i don’t know this game was just stunning.
Your content is some of the best on youtube, i wish we had more dq youtubers (dqtubers?) Your videos helped me play the dq games i didnt initially enjoy, mostly being dq 2 and 6. Love your content.
I started with VIII on the 3DS at the beginning of this year, I'm still finishing it as it's quite long and I don't get easily addicted to jrpgs, but man what a ride, I'm just 40 hours in and I always get excited when I think of all the adventures from the story, it just has a sense of awe and discovery that I don't remember feeling to such an extent in this genre.
I think my top 5 is quite similar, haven't played VI and X yet so can't judge those but I would place them in the following order: 1. Dragon Quest XI (Easily the best game in the series) 2. Dragon Quest VII (Great story, I feel that it probably has the strongest story of any game in the series) 3. Dragon Quest VIII (Close to VII for me, while I feel objectively speaking it's the better game, I prefer VII for it's story) 4. Dragon Quest V (This is an experience, really unlike any other game in the series. In terms of character development the best game, although I feel some aspects are slightly dated now a days). 5. Dragon Quest IV (Way ahead of it's time, I feel IX and III could also take this spot, however IV has the better story and more cohesion throughout).
How I wish they could port DQ8’s 3DS version to PC steam and they could up the graphics like the ps2 and orchestrated music.... Anyway great video Chief! Missed your adventure of Dai reviews :) cheers to more vids!
@@bigladjoelad2345 But then you don't get the two extra party members and the monsters appearing on the overworld, which is the main appeal of the 3DS version.
@@tiagomartins3049 The graphics would still be worse than the PS2 version outside of roaming enemies. There would be lower draw distance, lower quality textures and models, little to no character shadows iirc, the point of a steam port with these features would so that it could truly be the "definitive" version of one of the fan favorite DQ games..
Dq5 had such a good story, the best story I have ever experienced in my life, the music is so good, and although the monster mechanic is primitive by today's standards, recruiting an orc with full heal and multiheal was pretty useful in the final boss and the postgame boss, the game is still so good and worth the 20 to 30 hours of time, dq iv is my third favourite because the interesting story and the best pace in the series imo, overall I think that dragon quest is the best rpg and I feel at home when I play most of the time
I predicted this video would be XI, IX, V, VIII, and either IV or III. Guess I was pretty close. Super surprised to see no IX though, I think that even though it is an outlier, it is by far one of the best introductions to the series
I played all the main series, but the first 1. Started in 1991, in famicom (nes 8 bits) My favorite was the 5 too. But the stories of 6 and 7 were great too. All the games were special by that time. This franchise was my main reason to buy new consoles, just to be able to play these wonderfull games. (SuperFamicon, PS1, NDS, PS2, PS4)
Lemme guess the titles before I dive in. Dragon Quest III: Seeds of Salvation Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age I hope I got these right.
@@slasaru I really like DQ6 as well. It has a really fun class system, delightful characters, and an interesting story. I was just guessing which ones Chief would pick using what I know about him.
Yeah, I like to buy the physical release if I can, but if I see a 10+ year old game going for full price or more, I emulate with absolutely zero remorse... lookin at you Pokemon Black/White 2
What I love about this list is the fact that 4 out of the 5 Dragon Quest protagonists listed here ended up in Smash Bros. Sakurai agrees that these are good jumping-on points.
@@benhodgkin5198 Then I'm glad V has a staff, because IV is my favorite Hero design. Though if they really wanted to, V could have just used Pankraz's sword in Smash like in the DQ movie.
9:08 Actually, Pokémon's main inspiration for it's catch system is based on Ultra Man, but yeah, DQV probably did influence it a bit (also SMT did it before both of them)
huh, all this time I thought DQ was a major contributor... not just the monster-catching/training/fighting aspect, but also the idea of trading... as the Pokemon creator as a kid was frustrated not getting a particular rare drop in DQ2, in which a friend of his had two of them by sheer luck, but there was no way to digitally trade for it.
@@SorcererLance DQ influenced every JRPG directly or indirectly. However, in the context of monster catching and battling, pokémon was inspired by Satoshi Tajiri’s love for bug catching and an old version of Ultra Man, where he would catch kaijus in capsules and then use them in combant against other kaijus. The kaiju inspiration is very evident in the first generation, where a lot of mons were directly inspired by very popular kaiju from Satoshi and Masuda’s childhood
Dragon Quest III started it for me. Me and my childhood best friend were so bored that day and started playing random games. We happen to find Dragon Warrior III put on PC format and started playing it on his computer. We got so invested on it, we play it everyday, solving everything. We're only in elementary school that time. Unfortunately, his pc broke and so we moved on. But I can't forget it, maybe because we haven't finished it yet (we're missing just one more orb that time!). I happen to see it again when I was in college and since then, I got obsessed over it. I have played all DQs now except DQ10 and DQ11.
dragon quest 11 can be played on the PC through steam. amazing game. loved it . the amount of love the programers put on it shows. it is a shame that it is not more popular in the west.
9:13 to my knowledge megami tensei did it first. also starting dq5 today, i liked dq8, 9 and 11 a lot, and i just found your channel today. looking forward to playing more games in the series, and looking forward to seeing more vids from you :)
You've improved tremendously on your video quality Sack! I couldn't help but feel proud knowing I was one of the very few subscribers when your channel hit 700 subs, awesome video and hope more people get into DQ through it!
9:50, I probably spent half my playtime reading those party chats, lol. It adds so much to the characters it's insane, and it's much much more convenient than newer iterations of the party chat. You press 1 button and you quickly get the dialogue, no screen change needed.
If you want to try out one game: *11* If you think you'll play two games: *8, 11* If you think you'll play three games: *5, 8, 11* Four games? *4, 5, 8, 11* Basically the same order in the video. I'm not the biggest fan of 3 tho. I prefer a party of defined characters with personality instead of auto-generated companions
I remember beating 3 and thinking it was a good game but if you asked me today what it was about and what happens in the story i couldn't tell you... it just is not very memorable game.. I could tell you all about 11 and 5 those games stick with you.
@@odinodinson3575 same thing with dragon Quest 2,the game has basically no story(just going from a place to another doing chores than finally fighting hargon)bad balancing the difficulty sucks game is unfair, and the characters have no personality to speak of,dragon Quest 2 is basically 1 but bigger and it didn't age well,i also prefer story/characters Over Gameplay most of the time
DQ 3 is an amazing game, doesnt really matter if you personally are a fan of it or not. Always recommend it to people, its the most influential RPG ever made.
@@odinodinson3575 DQ 3 is a masterpiece and a very memorable game. Check out the HD-2D trailer, it looks amazing. Go play the trilogy in order on the Switch to get a better impression of it.
@@Muddy120 just because a game is influential doesn't mean that it's a masterpiece or a must have experience, many modern and some classic jrpgs like final fantasy tactics have great story and character development something that dragon Quest 3 doesn't have, does This mean that it's a bad game?of course not but i don't think it and Dragon Quest 2 aged very well especially 2
I remember what really got me interested in Dragon Quest 3 was an article in Nintendo Power specifically dedicated to the GBC remake. Rather than just writing about the game and how it works, they write an entire journal from the perspective of the main character. It made the game sound incredible.
I am almost done with dq 11, loved 8 back in the day just bought it for ps2 bargain bin for like 7 bucks and ended up falling in love. I’m definitely going to play 5, can’t wait. Not going to watch any further for spoilers. Great video!
I've been playing DQ on and off by chronological order and it was all thanks to you. I'm in DQ5 right now. And I have to say, so far, my favorite one is the third one followed by DQ1. Both GBC versions. Still playing through the fifth one but not that far into it so, dont have anything to say about it.
I recently played the demo for DQ Builders 2 (then promptly bought it after 20 hours of building as much as I could) and it actually got me really interested in the series. Now I’m a few hours into DQ 8 and I’m having so much fun! There’s definitely a certain charm to the whole thing. I really love the fact that they have different kinds of games. I most likely never would have been interested in DQ is I hadn’t come across Builders.
I'm already a dragon quest fan thanks to 8 and 11 (Rocket Slime and 7 were actually my first two DQ games. 7 intrigued me and 8 hooked me) but I'm glad I gave this vid a watch! For one, I started 3 and got a little lost but thanks to your description I know I don't need to worry about that! And also now I know I need to put 4 and 5 on top priority for my next RPGs to go through!
I like that in dragon quest 8, unlike every other dragon quest main character, he’s not the chosen one hero destined to save the world, there’s no God or fate in his corner guiding him. He’s just a regular dude, like he was just a standard castle guard before the events at the start occurred. Ironically makes him stand out and makes him feel more grounded and relatable.
DQ3 is the epic end of a trilogy, so I really would recommend playing 1 and 2 first. They're very short by DQ and RPG standards (like 10 hours each) and pretty straight forward. It also a good time to do it because we'll be getting the DQ3 remake some time soon hopefully
I thought DQIII was a prequel to DQ I and II. That's why I'm playing III first. It's my second DQ game after XI. After II, I wanna play VII sand VIII next
The later versions of 1 and 2 yes, especially for 2 as the original FC/NES version is so rough and imbalanced plus your two party members were so weak for so long. The only thing they never improved in any later release of 2 was that second to last dungeon. The Road the Rhone is still such a BS dungeon. Honestly worst dungeon in any RPG other than all the dungeons in Wizardry 4 which had a dungeon with no visible walls surrounded by invisible land mines so you basically kill yourself trying to map out the damn thing.
Hurray, I was right! It's not that surprising, to be honest. Those 5 games are all quintessential in the JRPG genre, in my opinion. Not just for DQ fans, but for fans of the genre. Great video, and great choices of games.
I just got Dragon Quest XI for the PS4 as well as the spin off games Dragon Quest Builders and Dragon Quest Builders 2. After I move in May I plan to take some time on my PS5 to immerse myself into the world of Dragon Quest.
Oh man, you have a lot of good times ahead. Dragon quest/warrior games are all good. They're slow but damn the stories are superb. I can play all of them again and have a blast
I can't disagree on this list. DQ8 especially remains one of my favorite games period. Tough call between the different versions, but regardless it is a great game. I liked the smaller playable cast (though the recruitable members are there) and also the valuable travel companions. Having them along for the ride even though they are non-combatants adds something to the journey. I like a lot of games in the series, but I'd probably still consider that one my favorite. Got me into the series and has kept me interested.
Before I stumbled upon sir sackchief I was but a inexperienced slime. Now I've played and completed Dragon Quests 7, 8, AND 11 and my life has been better since
I love this series! I'm new to it and just started playing on ps5 !!! I started with Dragon quest Heros and am still playing it. Thanks for this video ♡
Dragon Quest 3 will always be one of the GOATs and one of the best in the series and one of the best games of all time. Great list sackchief and happy Dragon Quest 3 day! The best DQ3 game version is coming out now with Octopath Traveler graphics! FF6 and Chrono Trigger plz follow suit.
DQ8 was also my first DQ. My uncle gave it to us and it sat on our shelf for the longest of time. One day i decided to pop it in the good Ole PS2 and the rest is history. Ended up playing 4, 6, 9 all on the DS and recently beat 11 on the switch. Solid game and just the classic DQ/JRPG I love. Hearing the DQ8 soundtrack again brings back so many memories. They GOTTA bring it to the switch in a form of a remaster or something. Bring the graphics to DQ11 level, add all the content from the 3DS, and keep the orchestra arrangements and it will be *chefs kiss* Also making a 3 pack for 4, 5, 6 similar to what they did for 1-3 would be sick.
Slime Knight is always a beast until late game for me in Dragon Quest V, but he still has a place as a backup healer. I, however, love having Golem in my party. Give him the Meteorite Bracer, the best armor he can wear, and the Falcon Blade and he will be an absolute monster. I agree with the whole list, though, great series, even its less than stellar entries are still really good and that's more than I can say for Final Fantasy.
Playing Dragon Quest XI on Stadia, it's an absolutely beautiful game, one of my favorite RPG games of all time, just inched past Final Fantasy 7 for me.
Dragon Quest 1 is actually my favorite of the NES titles, it's far more replayable than the other 3 and its non-linear design is a joy to play through blindly.
1 holds some of my best memories growing up, but 4 was ridiculously awesome. My friends and family could never figure how to beat the first 1, it takes a lot of grinding and remembering what to get and where to go
My cousin was introduced to the game by DQ8 on the PS2, and then he introduced me into the series with DQ9 on the ds, which we both still own, and then i got 6 and 7 on the ds and 3ds, then (Because i don't havea a switch) last christmas, i was able to get XI on Xbox one, and its my fave of the series from what i've played, but 9 will always have the nostalgia factor.
Subbed. I got DQ11S on my ps4 and let me tell you that darn it’s freaking good. I actually started on DQ heroes I think, and it was okay. But DQ11 is DEFINITELY the right way to get into DQ.
Finally got to watching this and I love that the 5 you recommend are the 5 I have told people to play. DW4 was my first RPG (alongside FF1 NES, cannot remember which was truly first) with my dad. DQ5 has been my favorite since playing it on emulator about 18 years ago.
The multiclassing in Dragon Quest IX was a lot like in DQ3, though you can't keep spells between classes. ): Multiclassing was absolutely my favorite endgame activity in that one. I'd do good builds like boomerang paladin and bad ones like sword priest... makes me want to go back and play it right now, but I'm dedicated to getting through DQ VII until I unlock the spotpass items.
I couldn't agree more. DQ5 was my first and still my fave. I played DeJap's translation years ago. Papa's for life!!! DQ8 is my second fave. 3rd fave... the B2 poster is up on my channel right now. 😁
I have just today, gotten into the dragon quest games. Bought 1-3 for a very cheap price for the switch.i now want them all. I was playing shining force but the map on there was frustrating so I gave up. I love dragon quest!
The only games I wouldn't suggest starting with are two or seven. Two is one of the hardest in the series and it's extremely linear while also being bad at telling you what it wants you to do next. Seven, at least the version for PS1, can be even worse at telling you what it wants. It also has some serious pacing issues, with some sections dragging on far beyond their welcome. I've never been able to get to the first time portal in under an hour or the town of Loomin where you need to go back and forth to the past half a dozen times to finally save it.
Just finished the post game in DQ11 this week on my Draconian Quest run and had a blast. Been getting friends and family to try out the demos for DQ11 and Builders 2 on switch, they are very easy low risk ways for people to experience the series.
Dragon Quest IV is still my favorite game of all time. I agree that V was really good, but IV's story was even better. From the first chapter onward, the whole game has a sense of dread because the humans know that the monsters are getting stronger and that the future of humanity is basically doomed. Not to mention, it has the best characters in the entire series, such as Taloon (Torneko), Maya, Alena and so on. Even the minor characters are great, such as Healie. Its without a doubt the most underrated video game of all time.
Yes 4 is a masterpiece. If anyone plays dragon warrior/quest they definitely need to play 4. Dw2 was a good game when it came out because it improved so much on another masterpiece dw1
I've always wanted to try this series since IX, VII 3ds, and VIII 3ds, but I mostly forgotten about them due to a lot of No's for a multitude of reasons, and more. But I finally was reminded and able to use my own money when the XI Hero was added into smash. I tried out 1 2 3 Switch and thought "Yep, this filled the hole of desire for me!" And now I enjoy this series a lot!
I’m only 14 hours into dragon quest 8 and feel like I’ve much more than got my money’s worth already. Looks like I can expect 60 hours+ of this brilliance! Such a breath of fresh air compared to most modern games.
I'm an old man too and I don't agree. They're all great, but 2 and 3 were super great at the time they released. I also would prefer to play 7 before 8.
I just started the series a couple months ago and I love it! I've played 1, 3, and 4 so far. I loved the mobile port of 1, it felt almost like nes Elden Ring to me and I was surprised when it was over. I played the gbc version of 3 and it was super good but I wish I hadn't just used the stock party the whole time cause it feels like a lot of the more interesting gameplay comes out when you try different combos and such. Still enjoyed it overall but I only barely beat it before moving on to 4. What a game! At least that's how I felt till the back 3rd. Once the party was fully completed it felt to me like all the narrative momentum was leaking out the sides. I really enjoyed the personal stakes of the first 4 chapters and how they all crossed over with each other, had a real TV show vibe and it certainly didn't hurt how instantly iconic a lot of them are (Alena and Torneko are you kidding me!?) Once I got to chapter 5 it was exciting to finally play the hero role and I had a lot of fun gathering up the gang. After that... Idk man. The game starts to feel so aimless and open and the story just becomes "find the 4 things to get to the final area and kill the evil guy" which is fine but I wanted more from the characters in my party and there just isn't much of that once they're all together. Overall I enjoyed it more than 1 and 3 but I just can't bring myself to finish it so I'll be starting 5 very soon. Once I finish 5 I'm probably gonna move on straight to 11. I really wanna play 7-9 but but I don't wanna play 8 on mobile and 7/9 are stuck on 3ds which I have but idk where it's at. 11 looks like the series ultimate banger tho so I'm hyped
I beat dq11 a few months ago on series x it was absolutely fantastic! I just got DQ5 on iPhone\iPad and after this I’m going to pick up dq4 as well! Super awesome video buddy!
Little nitpick, the mobile port of dq5 has an item that makes monsters easier to recruit and better ost quality. Other than that I agree that these 5 games are the best for beginner. I remember starting with Monsters Joker and oh boy did I spoil myself every final boss in the series 👀
I've played Dragon Quest games since 6 released on the DS and DQ9 was new; I was a small child playing these games and even then I enjoyed the hell out of them. I've played 11 and didn't understand how things worked when I was younger which got me ripped off as I asked my parents to buy 10 for me and we bought an empty box for like 30 dollars lmao. Now that I'm a bit older and have more money, I kinda wanna play most or all of these games because yeah... it's a big part of my childhood, and I want it to be a part of my history as a fan of video games in general. 9 is my favorite because I like making up backstories for all the characters, including my own, and as a whole this series has been very fun for me. Got a soft spot for 6 but yeah the others are better lmao, even I can admit that.
Well my first DQ game was V two years ago in that time I didn't think that I will going to fall in love with the franchise that's why I first played the best game in the series and eventualy played the whole Zenithia trilogy, VII, and VIII. Wow even when all the version I played was the nintendo DS and 3DS remakes moving to the 3D world in VIII blow my mind, eventually I played DQIII , DQ I and XI S
Another great video and agree to the most part! I played Torneko's Mystery Dungeon first and then dived into the main series which is rather unusual but also not a bad way since Torneko's system is more difficult and if you like the franchise and want to play something easier, you'll definitely fall in love with the main series.
To add some extra options for those with the ability to play with fan-translations or patches: DQ3: The SFC (Super Nintendo) version is a great middle-ground option. It has 1 of the 2 bonus dungeons found in the GB release, animated battles, and obviously comes with an upgrade to music and graphics compared to both 8-bit options. You can also just wait for the HD-2D Remake, which is most likely going to blow the rest out of the water. DQ4: There is a fan-made patch that adds party chat back in for the DS version. The Mobile version is still the current definitive one by hair due to some very minor balancing tweaks and better sound. DQ5: If, for some reason, Mobile or DS aren't an option for you then you may consider the PS2 version. It's a massive upgrade compared to the SFC, but a moderate downgrade compared to the DS/Mobile. DQ8: The 3DS version also lacks the orchestrated OST that was used in the international versions on PS2. A certain outfit of Jessica's was removed due to censorship, as well. A fan patch rectifies both. Honorable Mention: DQ9 is another standout choice. If possible, it's highly recommended to use a save editor to add the online exclusive content into the game, otherwise you're missing 1/3 of the side-quests. That said, the base game comes with 120 quests so the extra 64 could be overkill to some people.

Still honestly I'm hyped to get my hands on the remake of III when it comes to switch, haven't played a DQ game in a long while!
its funny how most people got into the series through dq9.
I'm one of those people, I can say Paladin is a broken class

Yea cause the promotional advertisement was like everywhere. I also began with DQ 8 as my first game and still replay the game every year or two on the PCSX2 Emulator on PC I freaking love that game. I personally never enjoyed DQ 9 after I've played 8. No reall characters (you create them and they don't have any story to contribute to) the story overall didn't feel as exciting to me and most importantly the downgrade from the graphics for me was a big disappointment back then.
IX was definitely the peak of Dungeon design and modernized the series, no wonder Level-5 made Yo-kai Watch so well.

I think 11s is by far the best starting point. Great way to ease into the series. It had so many quality of life improvements over previous entries
Not to mention the Tickington missions, which are good for introducing newcomers to some of the previous games' worlds, and are incredible fanservice to long-time players.
@@azazeltheundyingdamienkali5700 and it also the first in chronological order for erdrick saga
I can confirm. DQXI was my first ever game and I’m now hooked on the series.
I disagree. Because dragon quest is not an on-going saga. Final Fantasy is the same way. And in both cases, I suggest newcomers play the first three of both franchises.
@@breakfastplan4518 Best way to make every newcomer give up on this franchise

His current design looks more Dragon Quest, but the og had a special charm.
I agree, the new one looks so good

I think my top 5 is quite similar, haven't played VI and X yet so can't judge those but I would place them in the following order:
1. Dragon Quest XI (Easily the best game in the series)
2. Dragon Quest VII (Great story, I feel that it probably has the strongest story of any game in the series)
3. Dragon Quest VIII (Close to VII for me, while I feel objectively speaking it's the better game, I prefer VII for it's story)

VII is the best imo.

Dragon Quest III: Seeds of Salvation
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Actually, Pokémon's main inspiration for it's catch system is based on Ultra Man, but yeah, DQV probably did influence it a bit (also SMT did it before both of them)
huh, all this time I thought DQ was a major contributor... not just the monster-catching/training/fighting aspect, but also the idea of trading... as the Pokemon creator as a kid was frustrated not getting a particular rare drop in DQ2, in which a friend of his had two of them by sheer luck, but there was no way to digitally trade for it.

We're only in elementary school that time. Unfortunately, his pc broke and so we moved on. But I can't forget it, maybe because we haven't finished it yet (we're missing just one more orb that time!). I happen to see it again when I was in college and since then, I got obsessed over it. 9:50, I probably spent half my playtime reading those party chats, lol. It adds so much to the characters it's insane, and it's much much more convenient than newer iterations of the party chat. You press 1 button and you quickly get the dialogue, no screen change needed.
My first ones ever were Dragon Warrior Monster 1 + 2 and Dragon Warrior 3, all for the GBC. And those are still some of the best of all time.
I got 11S after trying out the demo because of how much content it had, and was hooked on the story. The game did not disappoint me.

If you think you'll play two games: *8, 11*
If you think you'll play three games: *5, 8, 11*
Four games? *4, 5, 8, 11*
Basically the same order in the video. I'm not the biggest fan of 3 tho. I prefer a party of defined characters with personality instead of auto-generated companions

I just finished the dq 5 on ds yesterday, oh boy one of the best game ive ever play had me tears in my eyes
Ty man, I started with DQ8 and years later I played 11. I’m in love with this franchise and I’m going 100% to try DQV
@@fabianfischer4229 it is a prequel.
Dragon Quest V is up there with the likes of the best Persona and Final Fantasy titles! Truly deserves its place as one of the best JRPGs of all time

My first DQ was 7 and it still hold a special place in my heart. I definitely recommend the 3ds remake though.
I'm going to take a guess before watching the video... The games are going to be 3, 4, 5, 8, and 11. Possibly 9 instead of 4, but my guess is 4.
I've only played 1 through 4, and loved each of those immensely. Great video, and I will have to check out some of the later games in the series now.
Oh man, you have a lot of good times ahead. Dragon quest/warrior games are all good. They're slow but damn the stories are superb. I can play all of them again and have a blast
I'm nearly done with Dragon Quest XIS on the Switch. I just recruited Rab on Hero's solo part.

Final fantasy 7 wasn't that good in my opinion. I can play dragon quest 7 repeatedly but ff7 I've never played twice.

Dragon quest 8 was my first crack. dq has held a special place in my heart ever since!
Dragon Quest 1 is actually my favorite of the NES titles, it's far more replayable than the other 3 and its non-linear design is a joy to play through blindly.
1 holds some of my best memories growing up, but 4 was ridiculously awesome. My friends and family could never figure how to beat the first 1, it takes a lot of grinding and remembering what to get and where to go
Dragon warrior monsters was my only dragon quest game until very recently. I can't believe I missed out on so many good games!
I’m brand new to the series! Just started watching a let’s play of 8. This gives me a good insight.
I never played a dq game until I found your videos about 2 months ago. I've now got dq figures on my shelf so yeah I'm hooked
DQ8 was my first DQ back in PS2 era, and after play other series in NDS, 3DS & SNES
DQ8 still the best
I’m one of the 3 people who started with dqb2 lmao. But seriously that game is amazing, obviously it isn’t a traditional RPG but it’s still awesome
Glad you made this. I’ve been playing XI S for a few weeks now. ~110 hours in and I’ve been itching to play another one.
Glad you enjoyed it
Yeah, I'd pick the same top 5. The only other ones I would strongly consider would be VII (3DS remake) and IX.
Haven't played a DQ but got the 3ds versions and for sure will jump into them as soon as possible.
Great vid.
I couldn't agree more. DQ5 was my first and still my fave. I played DeJap's translation years ago. Papa's for life!!! DQ8 is my second fave. 3rd fave... the B2 poster is up on my channel right now. 😁
Saw those Dr. Slump volumes bro, great taste. One of my favorite manga.

Same here, the demo is a great way to sell people on the game
I agree with you.
If you really wanna do most of dq 8...it'll take over 100
9 was my favourite but I'm glad you respect 5 so much because that's a close second for me
As an old man that has been playing Dragon Quest since Dragon Warrior came out....I absolutely agree with your assessment!
To add some extra options for those with the ability to play with fan-translations or patches:
DQ3: The SFC (Super Nintendo) version is a great middle-ground option.
Do a 35th anniversary predictions!
Good idea
@@sackchief thanks! Hope you do it! I bet many people would watch it!
hopefully DQ3 remake, but done with love like the FF7 remake
@@diegobrando5800 personally I want a DQ9 remake since it deserves a turn considering its the ONLY one that didn't get a remake or port.
