  • Anbernic has released a new official firmware for the RG28XX. If you've never upgraded the firmware in one of these consoles, then the process might seem a little confusing since Anbernic themselves don't provide any documentation on how to do the upgrade. So here's a quick walkthrough of the process.
    0:00 Introduction
    0:55 Rufus download (optional)
    2:05 Anbernic firmware download
    4:17 Preparing for the installation
7:58 Use Rufus to write firmware to microSD
    10:04 Finishing up

Just for your information: The KIOXIA SD card that comes with the handheld is an excellent Japanese product from Toshiba. There is no need to replace it.

Mine failed within 9 days of owning the handheld.

Thanks for stopping by! Just figured that since I had to install the firmware on my RG28XX I'd just document the process.

I was wondering if i need to use a card reader, or if I can just plug in the system to my laptop and access it through there.

You'll need a card reader for your PC to flash new firmware.

Just confirming, Rufus is not mandatory for installing the new firmware. Can I just manually move the new firmware download to a 128GB microSD and then place the card in the available card slot on the RG28XX?

You need to use a program to write the firmware image to the microsd card. It doesn’t have to be Rufus specifically (there are several programs out there that can write the image), but just copying the image file to a card doesn’t set up the filesystems that the RG28XX needs to boot from. (The stock firmware card has multiple partitions - one with the OS and a Linux file system and the other with the ROMs on a fat32 file system)

I use a Mac, is there software that can do what Rufus does?
Thank you for your assistance and clarifying what needs to be done. ✌️

@@user-je4nd9jj8w I think there’s a Mac version of Balena Etcher that will write the image for you. If you’re comfortable with command line, you can write images to a disk using “dd”, but I don’t recommend using dd unless you’re familiar with the Unix command line tools. Etcher will be easier.

Anbernic includes games along with the firmware - that’s why the download is pretty large.

Looks like Anbernic has released another firmware update (1.0.4) ... looks like a similar installation procedure but it's not added to the win.anbernic.com page yet. th-cam.com/video/by-bZ4MEd4c/w-d-xo.html
