As someone who's done taekwondo for a while and slowly getting into Muay Thai, I've already seen the huge difference between the two. Taekwondo is at the moment watered down so much that it's essentially a sport. And Muay Thai is definitely superior for fighting. Ever since I let one person who does Muay Thai kick me I've been insanely obsessed considering before that I'd never been hurt by a kick. Taekwondo is a great base fighting style if you want to branch off, the flexibility has helped tremendously with my Muay Thai learning experience. Overall, if you want exercise and to build your body for sports or later branch out, go for taekwondo. If you want to be able to fight then go for Muay Thai, those damn kicks hurt like nobody's business.

I’m new to Muay Thai and martial arts 15 turning 16 here in two months, I’m learning Muay Thai been for month and half, having around four fights next year, been doing shin conditioning kicking bags all day, flexibility stretches etc, I was thinking after I learn for a while should I mix with taekwondo because I think I’ll enjoy it, or bjj for mma because I’m looking to become a proper fighter

Yep. I used to practice tkd and stopped at red belt when there are too many restriction rules bullshit when sparring. Only for sport. I was punished by my sabeum for low kick(i used to do fbody contact karate), or even to put up hand defense is forbidden. And when i round house kick to the face. They punish me too. Only speed are needed. For getting points. Weird

Why most of the videos I watch where other martial arts face Muay Thai practitioners, its Muay Thai that has to abide under some special rules/conditions. That goes to show you Muay Thai is a beast!! Martial artists....fight under Muay Thai rules (8 limbs, throws) then you can really see where you are in your style(s).

1 on 1 head on fight is always about psychology. Taekwondo's sparring style was always on either attack or avoid being attacked. Lack of a defense system. That's an obvious weakness and when he gets hit, his confidence lowered. A full contact fighter cannot just depend on Taekwondo skills to win a full contact match. This is how the Taekwondo community had brought up its martial art. The World Taekwondo Championship is just a scoring game now.

I think taekwondo should be precise for distance and momentum. if it is too close it will be very easily broken by the opponent. and for muay Thai they have a strong defensive technique even though they are hit by a heavy kick, they can still defend with their raised arms and can catch the opponent's leg. Taekwondo's fault is to boast about their kicks. kicking is easy to train because it's already hard. but it's very easy to overcome. Just take one step forward to avoid a hard kick

(in my opinion) because i've been there at tae kwon do training camp and silat, the training methode between tae kwon do and traditional martial art are slightly differend. for example mhuay thai traditional martial art kicking a tree as their physical training, start with a banana tree simulately until you can chopping it with your leg kick then move to a solid tree. i hope i can jump in real traditional mhuay thai training camp someday

It’s about the MARTIAL ARTIST, not always the martial art. I’m a 3’rd degree black belt in Taekwondo, I also come from a Shotokan and Hapkido background as well. I’ve fought three Muay Thai guys on the streets and have beat each one. It was a street fight and everything was allowed. Guy tried to clinch me after giving me a proper straight punch, he got a uppercut elbow to the chin, KO. Second guy foot swept me, I fell, he rushed, I got up quicker than he anticipated and gave him a jumping snapping front kick to the face, he was done. Second guy lower teeped me, hurt like a bitch, learned his pattern and the second time he did it I grabbed his leg and kicked his other leg out from underneath him, he got up we traded some blows, I gave him a reverse side kick to the stomach, he hesitated for a sec,got his wind back, I gave him a leg kick faint, he blocked low and dropped his hands, I lunged and was able to grab his head and gave him a really hard elbow to the temple followed by a hard side kick to the chest, he went down like a sack of potatoes, tried to get back up and fell again, his friends told him to stay down. Muay Thai is good and so is Taekwondo. Just not the Mcdojo crap. And once again, it’s about the martial artist and not necessarily the martial art.
Some people are stronger, powerful, faster, quicker reflexes, higher fight IQ than others and all of these things have NOTHING to do with your style, but has everything to do with the individual. I don’t think people realize it but there are a LOT of Kickboxing champions that came from Taekwondo backgrounds. Most kickboxers are either Taekwondo Muay Thai, or Karate, (mostly Kyokushin Karate). If those discipline weren’t effective then they wouldn’t exist in kickboxing.
