72KG Muay Thai Legend vs. 107 KG Kickboxing Legend | RIP Nokweed Davy

In the early years of K-1 Grand Prix, an out-of-prime, triple-division Muay Thai champion entered the kickboxing arena against a coming into prime kickboxing legend. Nokweed Davy is a legend in many ways: he'd face Jerome Le Banner here, a 107 KG elite kickboxer at 72 KG, winning the heart of all spectators.
    Rest in peace, legend.

5 kg makes a difference in boxing and mma, and at elite levels, even 2-3 kg makes a difference, but here you have fighters with 35 kg difference fighting, that's just insane.....huge respect to Nokweed, R.I.P.

Two different styles. Kickboxers want first to score points, muay thai want to finish the fight as soon as possible while standing defense from oponent.
On this fight Jerome wanted to score points with is kickboxer techniques not to finish his opponent, and this was a kickboxing fight. So seems natural to me that he have won.
Nokweed on the other side knows that his opponent was heavier and stronger than him so he didnt toke a lot of risk. Looks like his objective was to survive the fight. In that strategy he was very sucesseful.
Both good fighters on their own style.

And there are enough "Kick Boxers", especially Dutch, who had success with their kickboxing background against big names with Muay Thai background. So, the comments in the video are much biased in favor of the Muay Thai Style. Jerome is a huge Name...but there are other Fighters in his weightclass who maybe killed the guy with his 72kg. I watched this tournament on PPV in the US back in 1995. My dad and I were stunned by Nokweed Devy's performance. After the result was given, the PPV commentators for this fight said that Devy was a kickboxer's kickboxer.
The tall man leading Devy to the ring looks to be the great Dieselnoi Chor Thanasukarn [Sky Piercing Knees]. He was the Lumpinee Stadium 135lb champion for four years before he was made to retire because no one would fight him. Dieselnoi stated that he was scheduled to fight Nokweed Devy a few times, but Devy always withdrew. A friend said to Dieselnoi that Devy told them he was a afraid to face his knees. Dieselnoi said that Devy had good tactics and good weapons, and would have been a problem for him if he wasn't afraid of him.
I believe this K1 event was a young Jerome LeBanner's coming out party. After narrowly getting past Devy, he decisively beat his next foes before losing in the final. Jerome would go on to become a successful K1 fighter for over a decade.

The grace and mutual respect between the two is so good, Muay Thai fighter held his own very well againts a man who'd crush most people in 2 minutes this shows the lifelong training of Thai Fighters which we can't ever accomplish yet even he had trouble that's what size difference is however he wasn't allowed to throw elbows or clinch either which could've affected his arsenal either way this is an important lesson. Despite the kickboxers advantages in every aspect such as: weight, height, reach and strength, nokweed fought much better

Yea JBL fought this like a moron, constantly just trying to overpower Nokweeds guard.

Agreed, crazy judges just didn't want their kick boxing sport look foolish. Maybe they should have used fighter of equal weight and the lose would not look as bad, then the judges may have been fair

So sehr ich für die europäischen Kämpfer bin, aber bei einem solchen Gewichtsunterschied, schlägt mein Herz für den deutlich leichteren Kämpfer. Nach meiner Meinung müßte der Sieg auch an diesen gehen.

It was considered an exhibition they even said before the fight that it would end in a draw if a knockout was not declared and they also said before the fight that neither fighter is to be going all out for a knockout. So judges weren't paid but it was a semi fake fight that they made millions off in the name of charity I guess.
