  • Javi Benitez second performance on Penn & Teller Fool Us Show at The CW Channel. Benitez try to fool them totally surrounded with a very classic trick that every magician knows but with an amazing ending where the thread transform in powder (Magic Powder??). Will he puzzle the two giants in magic? Well, he bring a new twist to the old trick that maybe does not fool them but for sure will fool everybody else (just check Alyson Hannigan reaction!)
    "El Hilo" is a twist of a very old trick called "The Gypsy Thread". The routine is based in a mix of concepts from Al Baker to Javi´s own ideas and many others. And now you can do it too!

      @FIDIRONU The magic happened when he grabbed a couple of pieces and handed them to Allison. I don't know what happened to the individual pieces, but I'm thinking that's when he handed her the "restored thread"... But where did all the other pieces go?

    • @walterjohnson8127
      @walterjohnson8127 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@jupitereye4322 Some of the other comments I believe are correct that he took the risk of having the single thread ball in his fingers when he picked up the collection of torn strings. Then when he picked up the combined ball, he pinched the torn strings ball and stole it from the ball of one single thread, keeping the torn strings ball hidden between his first finger and thumb, ditching it later. The powder was a separate effect.

    • @Wildart2
      @Wildart2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@jupitereye4322 You got it guys and playing it back at .25 speed you can see him separate the torn strings from the whole string. The ball he pulls apart is much smaller than the ball of string that was initially on the table and he is pinching the ball of torn string extreeeemely tight. I do have one observation, the length of string he starts out with is very long, if you put all the pieces of string together that were on the black matt it would barely add up to half the length of that original string. I wonder if they edited something out.

    • @holohulolo
      @holohulolo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe I'm not understanding the comments right. I think he slipped the single thread ball into her hand while he was picling up the torn pieces. Or maybe earlier or later, but by the time he's picking it up after everyone did the hand thing above it, it does seem like he was seperating the single thread ball from the torn one. But how does he know where to pinch, wouldn't the single thread be mixed with the torn pieces. Alison picked some other threads after he stopped touching the them and when she is twirling it up in her palm, some would get mixed and tangled with the single thread ball.
      It would be easier if at one point when he picked up the ball the whole ball was cover woth hos fingers as he pinched, becayse he could've had the long thread in his hand before. But the way he handled the ball, there doesn't seem to be a way to sneak in yhe long thread, the entire ball was always on vision even wgen he was pocking up the ends.

      I'm always a little conflicted when some trick performed with technical excellence doesn't fool Penn and Teller because they know the technique, but some BS trick does fool them because the magician purposefully misled them into thinking it was done a different way. I guess that's just the nature of the show, but Javi is one of the most skilled magicians I've seen on this show and I've watched every episode. You can tell Penn and Teller appreciated the execution, even though they knew what was happening. It's like trying trying to explain how an atomic bomb works and saying "so you just collided neutrons so they released a lot of energy." Its true, but there's so much more to it than that.

      @@walterjohnson8127 I know what he is doing and when he is doing it but I still cant catch it. He places a second more tightly winded ball of string up into Allison's hands when she is gathering string. When Allison rolls the string she rolls the second ball of unbroken string with the broken string. Its impossible for Allison to wind the broken string as tightly as he prewinded the unbroken string. When he picks up the string he can see the side the more tightly winded unbroken string is sticking out of and pinches tightly the side where the broken string is and just leaves the premade tightly winded ball showing. You cannot see any of the broken string he hides it so well and even switches hands with it right in front of them. This is what he did I dont know if I'm explaining ot correctly but this is what he did.

    At 3:05 he transfers a rolled up complete thread from his right hand to between his fingers along with the rolled up smaller piece from the table. This long thread is what he will eventually reveal at the end. He then rolls the two pieces into a ball and passes it to Alison (at 3:16). At the end, he finds an end of the complete long thread and pulls it out. At the same time, he hides the several small pieces by keeping them squished in the ball between his thumb and forefinger.
    The level of skill and dexterity to pull this off so smoothly is incredible!!!
    Also, you would almost swear that he never touched the thread at all until right at the end (when he ctually does from 3:07 to 3:15), which makes the trick seem even more amazing; this masterful level of misdirection is up there with the best in the world!!!

    *::SPOILERS FOR HOW TRICK IS DONE FOLLOWS::*
    Slip to .25x speed at 5:02
    It's a close up of the ball of thread. Follow it close. You can see him only rolling the side he picked up, a very frayed bunch-- not the entire ball.
    he's using a small circular motion to "pull" the torn pieces out from the intact ball he added at around 3:07 when handing the torn strings to Allison, who then rolled it all together.
    Notice how once he's done, the ball is suddenly is 1/3 the size when he starts pulling on the string, even though he never rolled that part up? The torn up pieces are hidden in between his thumb and index finger which is why he was holding the string between his fingers, and was so particular with how he moved from one hand to the other.

    Lots of magicians talk about how the story is important, but that’s a method of delivery, to make a logical progression of disbelief. You tell a story that affects people, that tugs at their heart.

    3:16 he loads the final unbroken ball of thread into her hand. 5:03 he is inspecting the ball to find the portion he loaded that was unbroken. Once he is confident it is located, he VERY strongly squeezes the ball so the broken pieces are now between his finder and "disappeared". The exposed part is now only the unbroken ball (and half the mass). If you freeze frame, you will see a frame where the broken pieces are behind the tip of his index and thumb. He brings his middle finger down to "roll" it back further. 5:20 the broken string ball is transferred to his other hand. 5:51, string finally discarded.

    He is palming another long string in his hands the whole beginning. Just before picking up string pieces he moves it to his pointer finger and thumb and picks up a couple strands. He gives this to Alyson. All the small strings are on the outside of the ball. When he picks up the string ball he first moved all the small pieces over the ball to the left side and pinches them hiding them. The center string ball is now exposed and he pulls it to unravel.

      @@danieljmoore What move exactly? I was staring at his fingers, and even though it does look suspicious, I don't actually see anything happening. @@TheEthikos When he's saying "pick one up like this!" He's moving the unbroken string ball from under his pinky/ring fingers to his index/thumb. He then puts that in Allison's hand. Watch how he flourishes his hand. He's doing it while misdirecting with sort of a flippant gesture, throwing his hand up. But thats the misdirect to get the string where he needs it. It's really smooth and hard to see unless you're looking for it. That's why Penn and Teller saw him do it, they were watching his hands.

    There is an interesting bit starting at about 5:30 as Penn starts to stand up. He is looking at Javi's left hand where the broken threads are,, stops clapping as Javi makes a move with them to his right hand, then he looks at Teller, like "you saw that too, right?" Fooled me till I watched it 20 times at 50% speed and read the comments. Nice work!

      The first part was beautiful but that was too obvious. You can see his right hand cupping the switch from the moment he stands up. Easily spotted at full speed on the first go. I was actually expecting the broken pieces of string rather than cocaine.
