    For several weeks I had tried to run FreeBSD 13.2 RELEASE on my system, but no joy. There were several bugs that caused the system to continually want to hibernate then lockup. Lucking, I decided to move to FreeBSD 13.2 STABLE and wow! Everything working great, no more issues as far as I can tell, and even had some other packages that I couldn't live without. Keep up the great work.

    I'm getting back into FreeBSD again cause i'm really tired of linux bs, I just want a Keep it simple UNIX like system and FreeBSD always been great for me. I use to be a hardcore FreeBSD user at one point and i'm going back to it, your videos really make me think how amazing it was to play around with FreeBSD, great channel and videos.

    It's getting better and better. I'd like to see a version of Homura/Suyimuzu but geared more towards non-game programs. WINE should have been as simple as double clicking the exe to run it, but apparently there's more to it than that :/ A launcher with all tricks applied out of the box is what we really need.

      Windows is unfortunately still king for heavy videogames. That said, I can skip Linux altogether and use FreeBSD for everything else

    I didn't understand why Apple and Sony created an operating system based on FreeBSD, but I realized it through various communities and chatGPT. That's just because of the BSD license, not because it's better than Linux. FreeBSD's unfriendly desktop environment was also due to developers not being interested in that environment. As a regular user, my conclusion is that the desktop environments are Windows and Mac, and between them, beneath an impenetrable wall, in a deep valley, lie Linux and FreeBSD.

    •  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      FreeBSD is lighter and much more secure. But yes with Linux you get great cult support, I mean community support

    Thank you. Do people here have experience with installing it on Intel NUC mini computers? How was that working for you (I mean drivers, hardware support etc.) on that machine as I am considering to buy one to try installing on it several interesting operating systems (most notably FreeBSD and GNU GUIX).

      I've installed FreeBSD12 & 13 it on a NUC (7i7BNH) and all hardware is supported. WiFi is not supported from the installer but afterwards like the Intel video.
      Note: Never tried Bluetooth

      @@leonmerts702 What do you mean by "WIFI is not supported from the installer" ? You mean you first connect it to the internet using Ethernet cable, then update the system after installation and then WIFI works just fine? Thank you.

    • @astroid-ws4py
      @astroid-ws4py 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@leonmerts702 By the way, Can I switch between different OSs on the Intel NUC just by switching different internal NVME drives on which different operating systems are installed? I.e. supposed I have one NVME drive with FreeBSD on it, And now I want to switch to another NVME drive with GNU GUIX on it, Then can the switching be done just by taking out and plugging in the appropriate drives? IIRC on the Raspberry Pi I can switch between different OSs just by switching the SD card and nothing else needs to be done on my part, I want to ask if I can do the same thing on the Intel NUC, Much thanks....

    • @leonmerts702
      @leonmerts702 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@astroid-ws4py The WiFi driver is not in the base system and therefore not present at install time. You either install from package or build from ports afterwards (same as the Intel video driver). After that all works. Note that I use this on a 7th gen Intel NUC. Newer WiFi card might not work. Check compatibility first.

      @@astroid-ws4py If you just switch out a drive for another, that should always work, or when having two drives just switch by pressing F10 for the boot menu and choose the drive you want to boot from.

    Compared with the instructions you're running in your video, 'pkg install pico-alpine' is missing at the beginning of your written instructions.
    Either way thanks for this useful tutorial, any FreeBSD 'newbie' who's interested in running this OS with a GUI should be aware of your video, it would prevent them from falling into despair after hours of failings (I myself had this bitter experience 😅).

    I am certainly not KDE biased. However, it has suited best for my desktop needs. Used Mate for years. The main problem is its background file manager called Caja. It does not work properly with USB (external/automount). Every now and then craches Mate. When happens, loses desktop icons. Almost impossible to get it back without (panel/caja) restart. Not recommended anymore.
    I personally dislike Gnome mainly because of its childish effects. Positioning the panel is impossible by default. Drives me nuts. Fancy effects but requires at least 3 clicks to launch browser.
    Tried Cinnamon few times. It is not mature. Lacks a lot of settings/menus. Dragging icons on panel in your desired order is impossible. It has been reported years ago, stil not fixed. It's default file manager is not good with network mounting. Files under NFS drives may not be readable/executable. SCreensave/lock has instabilities.
    May not be your favorite but install KDE if you want to avoid headaches. Very mature. Disable desktop/window effect for performance. Do not install as a 'Desktop Group' as it comes with 1000's of (uncessary) applications.
    If you only need standard applications (like me) just do it in 3 steps:
    1) Install the following packages
    pkg install sddm kde-baseapps kdeadmin kdenetwork kdeutils plasma-wayland-protocols plasma5-plasma-disks plasma5-plasma-integration plasma5-kwayland-integration plasma5-kwayland-server plasma5-plasma-desktop plasma5-powerdevil plasma5-sddm-kcm plasma5-systemsettings print-manager plasma5-kwayland-integration plasma5-kwayland-server plasma5-kscreen plasma5-plasma sane-backends vorbis-tools kruler plasma5-kdeplasma-addons kdemultimedia
    Optionally, some of my favorite applications for better desktop experience:
    pkg install simplescreenrecorder featherpad viewnior vlc audacity chromium firefox gimp libreoffice webcamoid kruler bluefish okular flameshot
    2) Add the following into user's .xinitrc
    exec startkde
    3) Add the followings into /etc/rc.conf and you are good to go.
    dbus_enable="YES"
    sddm_enable="YES"
    After your next reboot, you will have KDE Plasma session running.
    Cheers,.
