Trafotin, I just wanted to say thank you. Your videos are concise and yet they still touch upon topics that are of interest to me. This video on installing alpine linux is brilliant. I found what you had to say easy to understand .... at no point did I find myself thinking, "yeah, whatever that's supposed to mean" .... linux commenters are stuck in their own heads to such an extent usually that they usually can't communicate with people who haven't been using linux 20 years. You are a very notable exception. I intend to watch a bunch more of your videos in the future because you can definitely teach me things I need to know. It's a rare trait ... : - )

@@zxuiji alpine has its largest uses in containers and servers. Neither of them should have a desktop. So when installing for desktop use I believe they have struck a great compromise without making themselves much more work by providing many different images for the desktop environments.
Providing even a temporary gui comes with making the image significantly bigger because now the have to include xorg or a Wayland implementation. This is an issue when trying to install on iot or iot like devices with little ram and slow data transfer speeds (also major targets by alpine).
      TL;DR
The installer is a good compromise and adding a gui comes at a significant detriment to all other use cases of alpine.

Hello there. Well i have installed alpine using the xfce DM since it is my favorite :).
Just wanted to mention a few things that folks who take one the task of switching or trying out alpine linux as a desktop os
    a) some applications are rather difficult to install or will not install on the minimal linux configuration. it is based on busybox. I tried to run a obsidian appimage with no success.
    b) foliate was available but never got it running. I use it to reference some epub books.
    c) I fell in love with linux because it was meant for scripting and programming (IMOA). If the scripts use shebang /usr/bin/bash, there are two things to do
    1. download and install bash
    2. Change all scripts that have #!/usr/bin/bash to /bin/bash. Depending on the amount of scripts you have, i have approaching 100. I used sed -i '| /usr/bin/bash | /bin/bash | g' your scripts. This is very useful if combined with find command to search for your scripts and to -exec sed on each script. It took me longer typing the command than actually changing all the files :D
    d) I could never get vscode installed. even if i unzipped the tar.gz like i do on other distro's if not available in package manager for OS.
Nevertheless, even with the difficulties, of rewriting certain scripts etc, and having to change my workflow (wondering if it may be more productive) to work with alpine linux. I use geany or nano/mc for scripting and viewing markdown files that i created while learning linux, like HOWTO's. So knowing my way around a computer, i am not really handcuffed in getting things done. Alpine is sweet fast simple and small. Im sure thats is the very reason it is used in docker so much as the base os. So flexible that you can create scripts etc and very good on resources. Im wondering about systemd .....hmmmm.
Thanks again for your video. it was very helpful.👍👍

14:35, separate solution, treat the hardware install as just a main layer, install vbox or something to create a vm on an external drive, something like /mnt/VMs/alpine.bin, and then declare another volume on the drive (primary or logical, doesn't matter) as /home, whenever you leave the laptop just close vbox or whatever you're using and remove the drive to bring with you, when you come back plug it back in, re-open your vm and continue normally. No matter who gets onto your computer, they won't be able to steal what is not there because it's with you. Just make sure the external drive and it's cable/s uses the latest USB standard your computer supports for that extra bit of speed

I wanted to try void so badly but the installation was the most frustrating thing and getting WiFi set up was a nightmare (I don't have a wired connection available right now) because of WPA Supplicant. Once I finally got Wifi working I followed the Void instructions to get Gnome or any other desktop environment working but 3 times that I tried re-installing I got death screens and had to re-install again.
Alpine just worked for me. Install was easy, it's super efficient, and I love the package manager. I honestly didn't expect that I would like Alpine this much but I'm likely going to use it for some server stuff instead of Ubuntu in the future.

    -l, --lock
Lock the password of the named account. This option disables a
password by changing it to a value which matches no possible
encrypted value (it adds a ´!´ at the beginning of the password).

The fact that the packages are held back for a short amount of time also contributes to the overall stability (had I been using Arch in that time I would've gotten an unbootable system at least two times) but they aren't held back long enough to cause any problems when using the AUR (contrary to Manjaro).

I tried following a tutorial for Arch, but with little success - they are different distros after all.

Use a second M.2 chip or hard drive, then follow the video. Windows tends to just break anything on the same disk it's installed on. Avoid the hassle and use a second drive.

I'm hype on musl. No python unless I want it. I want to build out Alpine on btrfs and make a desktop daily driver... in any way possible. Glibc has had so many cve patches. Glibc is like openssl, how long can you stare at the patch history before you raise some important questions? Maybe musl has just fallen under the radar.

    • @mgord9518
      @mgord9518 ปีที่แล้ว

It's an enormous waste of power and time, there's a reason that source-based package managers are few and far between.
I've tried Gentoo (on a pretty decent laptop) and taking several hours to install and update something as ubiquitous as a browser (and even longer for the kernel) is ridiculous.
Maybe it would be somewhat practical if you didn't use a single piece of software written in C++ or Rust, good luck doing that though.

You don't like libre distros cuz proprietary doesn't work, but you are trying out a musl one where half of everything doesn't work??? You don't like source distros, but you are masochistic enough to mess with VMs/containers (on a musl distro no less) where to share a directory between the vm and host OS requires a PHD. Or use containers yes, I want to duplicate half of my libraries for every app installed and then mount a new filesystem so I can then go through an other software layer to finally launch my app, more slowly, with a chance of not integrating with the OS properly??? And systemd is far easier to use??? Most desktop users would not need to touch the init, maybe enable 1 service (one command on all inits), that is if you don't encounter one of the many bugs it has in it's 1.5+ mil lines codebase (runit has 1k and does the exact same thing) like deleting all your data (yes that existed). Shady af, like your logic of distro choices.
And don't just glance over Void linux with 0 effort to understand it. It has enough users. Every distro has a problem, but as of 2024 there is nothing more sane than Void.

  • @RHTORAS
    @RHTORAS ปีที่แล้ว +3

    well here's the deal...
SystemD is easy well this is kinda true but false too
is it easier than sysVinit ? Nope! sysV is widely used
there are better options than systemD like dinit or runit+66 but some folks are lazy and stay with the bloat and vulnerable systemD
alpine is not the best nosystemD distro and yes
Void is better (glibc, runit+66, bigger repos) as is Devuan (debian with freedom and security)
artix was good but now i find it mediocre
    also antix is good
or adelie which similar to alpine as is chimera linux
copying guides doesn't make you better and linux is here to make you better
the best distro is something debateable
but i think void is close to be the best distro imho
btw i use void, devuan, alpine, openbsd and alt with sysVinit from time to time
