When reading O'Neil's pedantic and realistic portrayal of alcoholism in his superb run, I always knew it came from personal experience of the author, even before I read interviews with him where he said he himself was a recovering alcoholic. That's when the best superhero stories are made, from something the writer lived himself.

Yeah, I've heard from a few people that he's a better editor than a writer. I'd have to disagree, I think he made plenty of great editorial decisions but I always look to this run as one of the single greatest changes made on a character. I don't know if it's on par with his Batman or Green Lantern/Green Arrow stuff but it's still pretty incredible.

I absolutely LOVE Doomquest as a story. The Michelinie/Layton/JRjr era had such a cool b-movie sci-fi tone to it and I'd love to cover that sometime in the future.

This run not being collected in an omnibus is criminal. Denny's Iron Man doesn't get the love it deserves. In my opinion, Iron Man #200 is the single best issue of Iron Man ever written.

Even though Demon in the Bottle is one my favorite stories, I really like Dennis O'neil arc with more realistic approach to the subject of addiction, showing Tony going through a self discovery journey and slowly come to accept his flaws and deal with them in order to become a better man. While Iron Man movie may be what made Tony such pop culture icon, his late 70s/80's stories were the first steps for Iron Man's evolution into one of Marvel best heroes.

I remember reading this particular era of Iron Man when I was a lot younger. The stories were amazingly written, the artwork and penciling solid and on target. What I took away from this was big falls can happen to anyone, even very charming and brilliant technologists like Stark. He's after all human, and that means fallible. Same goes for Rhodey.

Issue 182 was included at the end of the second volume of Superior Iron Man. Seeing Tony on the street broken and alone and saving that baby, I was immediately invested. I own two of the Iron Man by Denny O'Neil Epic Collections and you just reminded me I should get around to reading them. Thank you for the insight!

This was interesting since I own some of the comics in this run but not all. So while I know most of the beats, there are stuff I didn't know like Rhody's arc. Neat.
Renewal or reforging if you will, has always been at the core of Tony's character. He wants to be better from who he was. I really don't like how Iron Man's writers have him just be RDJ now. That feels like who Tony was at the beginning of his arc: Arrogant and prideful.

Out of all the Denny comics, there are 2 runs I want to read. Denny's run on the Question and his great run on Iron Man. The impact his run has on Iron Man is huge and I wish Marvel would collect this series in an omnibus already. It is just too good!

Writers back then had way more restraint and talent. Nowadays if a writer doesn't like a character is they ruin them and insert characters to belittle and strawman abuse them like the garbage that was Tom King's Batman run, Hellcat Ironman, and Ta-Nehisi Coates' Captain America.
(While writing it just realized the pattern in the character they target)

I just found your channel and I appreciate the fact you chose to tackle this run, as it’s one of my personal favorites! Lots of people have covered O’Neil’s groundbreaking work on Batman and Green Arrow, but very few mention his Marvel work, in particular this Iron Man run, which is incredibly strong and deserves more attention. (And proves my point that you don’t have to like a character but if you write them with integrity it shows in the work).
I don’t see a lot of people talking about Iron Man’s comic books history in general, which is a shame as I think he’s great for a whole lot of reasons! He is one if my favorite super heroes and definitely my favorite Marvel hero! 💛 You’ve earned yourself a new subscriber, my good sir ✨ Well done! 👍🏽 I’m looking forward to checking out more of your work in the future! (Your video on Hickman’s FF has caught my attention so I think I’ll watch that one next 😁)

@Nestor Munoz I actually really like what Cantwell’s run is doing for that reason. Tony’s had decades of stories since the O’Neil run so it’s great to see how far he’s fallen while showing how much more mature and nuanced he’s gotten. I think Iron Man’s character has always had a cyclical kind of progression and it looks like Cantwell’s writing a story that actively confronts that, sort of asking “what does it take to actually grow as a person?”
