I remember back in 2019 I got from the library the Jack Kirby Fourth Wall Omnibus. It wasn’t a quick read but it was so fascinating how in this one Omnibus gave me a look into Jack Kirby’s creative juices when he’s not under the shadow of Stan Lee at Marvel. And the fact he started it all in the Jimmy Olsen title is even more amazing. The least likely DC title planted the seeds into a bigger DCU. I still think Kirby’s best book that I read from the Omnibus was Mister Miracle but Olsen stands out how Kirby allowed readers to get comfortable into his strange concepts. With Jimmy and his friends being the surrogates to what would become the Fourth World. Just brilliants. And Kirby’s art is always 11/10. Great video Doug.
Every summer for five years, I checked out the Jack Kirby omnibus collection from my library. Loved the Jimmy books. Considering his youth and tendency to get powers, you would think he would be the user of the H Dial.
Why would Jimmy need the H-Dial? He's got a Kryptonian suit with a flight-belt for Flamebird, a miniature Super-suit as Superlad and an elastic serum to be Elastic Lad...Kryptonian tech is better to him than any H-Dial...using anything else to him isn't being "Superman's Pal"
What a well put together video! I'll admit that I haven't read Kirby's Fourth World stuff (that might have to change soon, though!) but from his comics that I have read-OMAC and The Demon-I feel like that "weirdness" that pervaded his stories is something that a lot of people don't know they would enjoy! Maybe I'm just coming from a perspective where a lot of comics these days strive too hard for seriousness or realism (not that those comics can't be incredibly well executed as well), but there's some unique form of boldness and honesty that comes with "weird" comics. Whenever I hear people talking about something like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure-which seems to be incredibly popular and has a level of abstractness that might even outdo Kirby's work-I wonder if the only thing stopping them from reading and loving comics about warring factions of sci-fi gods or a man who gets unknowingly turned into a super soldier by a satellite controlled by a peace organization is that they just don't know about them. In any case, let's hope this video motivates more people to check out Jimmy Olsen and the Fourth World!
I will never forget the ane-comi comics with how every girl in the series had the hots for Jimmy, from Wonder Woman to Power Girl and every superbabe in between.
@@ForEveryKindofGeek well if Nightwing has that effect on superheroines...why wouldn't the original Flamebird too right? Jimmy might also have this one other superpower too. Being a ginger.
I have only said this about J.R.R. Tolkien until this point, but... I hope when Kirby got to heaven God allowed him to keep working on "Forth World" because I want to see how he has reworked what he had (since he would use his work marvel didn't allow him to use for it in life) and all the new ideas and stories he would have added. The more I hear of the Forth World the more mystified I am about it. It just seams more and more like an all time great work!!!
jimmy is one of those characters that really doesn't get the respect he deserves, i mean the absolute bat-shittery of his title just completely endures me to the guy
I hope there is a series based on this, Jimmy is a really cool character who stays in the shadow of Super and Lois, I think he deserves to shine too, so the superman trio would be complete
Ah man the thing they said about Vince Colletta. I've almost finished this omnibus but can't help thinking how bad the art is in parts of it. Then I see Kirby's pencils which are amazing and realise that the inker, Vince Colletta, has often ruined the art with his inks. Like the vid says, the inks erases alot of the detail in Jack Kirby's pencil work. Kinda sad to see
While admirable that Jack Kirby wanted to take the bottom and make it the top. Like Bryan Singer's itch to test himself and see if he could do a romantic comedy halfway through Superman: Returns' production.. they should have just done Superman.
Awesome video! One of my grad school writing teachers was Mark Evanier, I'd spend all my time asking about Mr. Kirby. That said, I used to have the first Kirby issue of Jimmy Olsen, but I sold it and many other comics to help buy a house. You have a new subscriber! I make similar content, please come check it out and say hello.
I am fairly new to American comics so I don't know if it's usual in the culture to be a fan of Jimmy. I find it strange when Scott from NerSync says stuff like "these are the only comic books that I collect physically". I'm just can't be sure if it's a joke or is Superman's Pal is really that dear to him.
I can’t speak for Scott but I’d definitely say I really like Jimmy as a character. There’s a level of sincerity and wonder to the character that I can’t help but find inspiring, and I see it more through every story he’s featured in. Except JL: The Nail. Maybe don’t read that one.
Kirby was always his own worst enemy . In the 1940's he lied to his employers at Timely was caught and fled to National Comics (DC ) . Kirby served heroically during WWII then returned to DC with , some success . Kirby worked on a newspaper comic strip with some success while at DC before running into money problems , losing his newspaper strip and suing DC. Kirby was forced out of DC and was very fortunate that Atlas Comics ( formerly Timely Comics ) had lost 2 of its main artists . Despite their bad blood Stan Lee allowed Kirby to return to Atlas . Working under Stan , Kirby achieved the highest level of ongoing success he would ever achieve. After several years of that success under Stan , Kirby began cover negotiations with DC because Kirby chose to scapegoat Stan for his own money problems . Leaving Marvel ( with no prior notice ) Kirby moved to DC expecting his success to continue only with more money . Kirby tanked , his titles were all short lived and canceled . Kirby crawled back to Marvel were he attempted to recreate his failed projects at DC .

It's a pretty weird read but it's really fun! DC actually just did a re-release not too long ago. You get everything in 2 volumes.

Lousy at business and social relations, but left a trail of genius work that make a lot of cash today.
