This was the greatest fighting game on the market back then. I remember playing this on an arcade in a skating ring where I used to live in NJ(no longer in business, sad). This and many other games for Sega Saturn was ahead of its time for video game graphics and what not.
Yep, I remember playing this in an arcade as well. I remember being BLOWN AWAY BY THE GRAPHICS!! My neighbor actually had a Sega and we would play this and a racing game called Daytona USA! Hard to believe it was over a quarter of a century ago haha, goddamn I’m gettin old!!

I Was So Obsessed With This Game At The Arcades In 1995 That I Got A Sega Saturn With This Game One Year Later. Talk About Buying A Console Just For One Great Game.
Fighting games were huge at the time and this was definitely a system seller for the saturn. Got alot of mileage out of it playing this game with my 2 big brothers.
I'm so old, I remember when this game was considered cutting edge and the graphics were unrivaled for a home console. Still doesn't look awful for a 25 year old game but it's mind blowing how far games have come in the last couple decades. At the time we thought it was impossible to improve visuals over this, but now look at what games look like now, hard to imagine games looking any better than they do now, but I'm sure 25 years from now, our standards pf graphics will look laughable at best
I miss the days of saturn and dreamcast. As soon as you saw the telltale screen flicker of crisp 60hz high-res gameplay you knew you were in for a treat.
@@Kanal_Schaefer Thinking back. Nothing really topped the look of VF2 as far a 3D home fighting games. (32 Bit) We could debate some of them matched it. Dead or Alive would be on that list.
I actually bought my Sega Saturn back in the day along with a joystick controller just to play this game. There was a button combination to unlock other features like alternate music and clothes of each player. Good times.

The Background don't really look like 3-D polygons. It look like the developers instead used the 2D parallax scaling effect. For example when you fight Shun the raft you are on doesn't move because when the stage begins in the arcade you always pass underneath a bridge. In the Saturn version, it's gone. It doesn't really look like the background rotates like the arcade because they used 2D Imagery for that instead. I get it, they sacrifice some 3D Polygons for the background and the model characters, in order to maintain all the moves the fighters have and the 60fps from the arcade. That was smart otherwise everyone would be complaining that it plays to slow and you don't even get all the moves from the Arcade.
I know that Tekken 3 has significant more content than Virtua Fighter 2 but I still think VF2 is somewat better ported from the Arcade than Tekken 3 was. I don't know, maybe I just prefer VF better than Tekken.
VF2 in Saturn looks pretty decent... you may know they considered porting VF3, with the help of a 64mb RAM cartridge... I wonder how that'd have looked.
Jornada Gamer i agree. VF is and always will be the choice for serious fighting fans. tekken may look flashier and have more but it takes far less skill to be good at it
remember seeing the first virtua fighter in the arcade, and the graphics instantly drew me in. The game sucked, but I played it to experience the insane graphics. Then when I saw VF2 at a movie theater, I was like WTF is this shit!!!! This is the technology! Nothing on my PC, gaming consoles, or anything I've ever seen looked that amazing! When I first saw the saturn version, I basically thought it was arcade perfect. I had to have a saturn. But I couldn't afford it :\
Damn... I was the only one in my whole neighborhood, even my family, who had 3 choices and went with the least popular: Between begging my mom for the N64, PS1, and Sega Saturn... I asked for the Saturn. Sega, as a hardware company had so much potential, I don't know what happened. The console was genuinely good, and the 1st party Sega games were great. I just don't know what happened, I used to defend Sega a lot to my friends and family but they always used to tell me "maaaan you fucked up, should have went with the n64 or ps1." Time proved them right, I guess...
Remember when they made the Dreamcast with internet library ? That's when Sega failed ... people were not prepared for Internet Library and shit, they basically where the first to try it... if only they waited few years...
Made the exact same decision. I remember it came with a demo CD. Woth the flying purple girl, some dragon game along with this one I cant remember but these type of kids with unique traits in a haunted setting
The games Sega ported from their Am2 arcade hardware to the saturn were always so impressive. If you only look at those games the saturn seemed like a real contender to the Playstation and N64. Some may even have argued supperior. Ofcourse all of us that lived though that time know the cold truth. 3rd party games on the saturn were almost universally less visually impressive (sometimes drastically) than the same game on PS1 or N64.
Hey, this is crazy, but while I was playing the 360 version of VF2, I set it on the very hard difficulty (called there as Hardest), and the thing is that the AI doesn't feel cheap anymore. It feels more fair, although you still need to find a strategy to defeat the AI. That said, is not as annoying as the "easy" difficulty. Makes me wonder, does the AI becomes fair too in the rest of the VF games when set in very hard?
wow ive owned this game for years and could barely make it to stage 6, so i never even bothered trying expert mode. then today i just randomly decided to try it out and realized within about a minute that the mode is incredibly broken. The AI just tried to block everything you do, but each time you contact, their character nudges back a bit. So if you just flurry at everyone, you can just push them out of the ring like a sumo wrestler without hardly any resistance. Literally only Jacky put up any type of fight. I beat the entire game in 6 minutes 59 seconds and got to see the bizarre initial select screen for the first time ever
