I figure the coin was already ruined as you said so it is okay for a place holder until a better one comes along. Apart from the discoloration it's in pretty good shape.
I would likely be on your side of the fence on the issue most of the time. In this case, there isn't much I could have done to make the coin worse off. Thanks for watching!
This is one of the times I approve of cleaning a coin, and acetone to remove gunk, or pvc damage is appropriate for saving the longevity of the coin. The only other time I clean a coin, is if they get dirty and sticky from being in a cup holder, or on a car floor and they are just for spending. A little gentle dish soap or baby shampoo in water does the trick for those.
I agree - this was a no-brainer situation. I cringe when I hear about old and rare expensive coins having been cleaned by their owners... what were they thinking?! I suppose we have a more favourable view of toning/tarnishing that they had in the past!
I don't think it will remove the corrosion, necessarily. I think the acetone will dissolve anything organic. I'd give it a try, though, and see what happens. Let me know what the results are!
But if the coin is just tarnished and dirty is it not suppose to be cleaned because it loses value? They say not to clean but I don't know why it wouldn't be better to clean it up to look nice again. Lol.
Hey guys, I am a little new to coin collecting. How do you know which variants to look for in coins? Do you know of a list of coin variants that I can use? Thanks
A Charlton Standard Catalogue - Canadian Coins if you're interested in those. The numismatic issue is what I use from 2012 and haven't updated it yet. You're not going to find all of them in it, for example the 1899 penny has 2 different dates one with a high 9s and low 9s. Discovered that yesterday on imaged MS-65 coins submitted to PCGS while analyzing the photos with imaging software. Good Luck, lots to learn.
I like the coin so much better having the gunk and grime removed. Leaving that junk on the coin makes it far less desirable to me. If purists prefer sticky crudy coins then so be it. Not for me.
Nice experiment. You got to do what you got to do to temporarily fill a hole in the album. The wheat cent turned out looking good.
Thanks! Much improves, for sure!
Acetone is in fact so gentle that it can be used to remove fresh fingerprints from proof coins with no side effects :)
Hey James great video of information that stuff works great
Thanks 👍

I agree - I couldn't very well make it worse!
I’m not a big fan on coin cleaning , but was very interesting and informative 😊

Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, Abeer!
The worry over cleaning circulated coins is silly if you feel it looks better do it. With the caveat that you should avoid abrasives and acids.
Agree completely. Thanks so much for watching!

My go to source for Canadian info.
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoy my videos!
Great job on that penny!
Thanks! It turned out pretty well!
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!!
I find that CLR is is the best for cleaning pennies that will never make the grade
I'm sure that stuff will get rid of most anything!
As long as it didn``t remove any natural patina from the coin it`s perfectly fine.
Absolutely!
Oh goodness if I'd only listened further. 😊 my apologies.
lol! No worries!!
Did you get your 2023 King Charles rolls from the mint?
It has arrived, I'm just not at home to open it up yet!
23rd 👍 do you know if that works for highly corroded pennies? I have a few that have it so bad that I can't tell the date at all.

@CADRollHunter I will do a video on it as soon as I get some acetone. Thanks for help.
Nice glad you didn't lick it.
I have a feeling that it wouldn't have tasted too great!!

Conventional wisdom says don't clean coins. And for the most part, I agree. Most folks don't know what to do, and risk damaging their coins.

Lol! I feel the same way. That coin wasn't nice at all in the former condition! Thanks so much for watching!
