  • In this video, we're going to look at some banknotes I was extremely fortunate to get my hands on. These are notes from North Korea. They're not just hard to get. They're almost IMPOSSIBLE. First of all, their's virtually no tourism in North Korea. But even if you could get in the country, foreigners are not even allowed to have any North Korean money. And it is illegal for anyone to remove it from the country. Let's take a closer look!

I found a North Korean 5 jeon (0.05 won) coin in a world coin bin once at a coin show. Sometimes in South Korea, you'll see North Korean money in flea markets, though there's no telling how they wound up with it in the first place.
As an aside: I know someone who went to North Korea on a mission trip some years ago. I've been told most people seem to eschew their own currency in favor of US dollars, euros, or Japanese yen.

I've heard that you can find some of this stuff in South Korea and also China, close to the border. Foreigners are strictly forbidden from posessing this money, so it would be interesting to know how it moves about, but I agree that any North Korean might be willing to trade for foreign currency (though what they could actually do with it there is a mystery to me!). Thanks so much for watching!

Some good finds considering one would otherwise not be able to visit North Korea. To me, it feels great to travel the world through currency. The designs on reverse are beautiful...yes, similar to Canada's landscape series on bills. Excellent paper condition.

The collector I purchased it from actually had several of each denomination, all in excellent condition. I was fortunate to be able to purchase them!

Not this won! The North Korean won was revalued twice: 1959 and 2009. The bills that @CADRollHunter is showing us here are no longer valid.
For many years North Korea kept a symbolic exchange rate of 2.16 North Korean won to the US dollar, said to be based on Kim Il-Sung's birthday (February 16). Then they abandoned that peg around 2001 and you can imagine what happened there...
