I dabbled in coin roll hunting a year or two ago. I ordered well over $1500 in half dollar boxes over time at my bank and never got any silver. Then I went to a local bank that I wasn't a member of and asked for some rolls. They weren't too happy with giving them to me once they found out I wasn't a customer, but I was very polite and the teller gave me some customer wraps and individual coins from the drawers. They were like half filled with 40% silver. It was a great find but it was my only whiff of success. The big bank that I was getting machine wrapped rolls from seemed completely impossible.
@@johannessmithenstein It's getting harder and harder to find silver for sure. But 3 boxes is really just a drop in the bucket. I'm only getting 2 and sometimes 3 boxes a week now. ( I used to get 5) I go several weeks without silver anymore, but eventually some comes along again. At least it always has in the past. One day it may quit for good. But I admit it gets discouraging. And I can't disagree that you may not find it worth your while. But for me for now, I'll keep plugging away. I just found a silver quarter yesterday
@@TwoshedsGabby Yeah I'm gonna get back into it. I think I had a false impression of how easy it would be from all the youtubers and then I got discouraged. But as I faced that difficulty I also just became more cognizant of the fact that there's so many people doing this, and it's been 50+ years since the last silver entered circulation so naturally it's very scarce. I guess if anything we should get on it while we still can. Good luck to us both.
@@johannessmithenstein I think the reality is. We are finding the small amounts that are still showing up after a parent or grandparent passes, and the recipient just turns it in at a bank. So you either find a few customer rolls, or a few loose coins, or occasionally it makes its way back to brinks or Loomis to be rerolled.
I find a lot of silver dimes and quarters when I check the change slot in the coin star. In the last 6 months I found 7 silver dimes and two silver quarters.👍😃
@@rogerchappell303 that's really good. I have found 2 silver dimes in the last year. I do believe some areas do better than others. Some of the places I check, I never find anything. But I'm there. So I check.
Sir if I may ask, how do you approach the banks about the boxes of halves? The ones I have spoken to about the halves boxes don’t have any boxes in their vault and/or do not want to order them - what do you do with the boxes you have gone through that have no silver in them? Do you keep the boxes or turn them back in? The banks don’t seem to want them - just wondered what your experiences have been with this, thx!
For starters I have 5 bank accounts, I'm looking at a 6th. In my opinion you need at least one big bank account like wells Fargo, or chase (but make sure you can find a way to not pay fees, I hate paying fees) they are good about ordering coins for you. I try not to return half dollars to the same branches I order from. I also spread around the returns so as not to overload any one branch. If you do find a branch with especially kind employees, take them a dozen donuts every now and then and thank them
Greetings from Chesapeake, West Virginia. I look through penny boxes for many years coin roll hunting. The last 5 years I'm finding less wheat cents and more shield cents. I may find the average of 6 wheat cents in 10 rolls of penny rolls.😢
I think 6 in 10 rolls is pretty good. I hope to get 10 wheaties in a 50 roll box. But I have gotten several boxes from West Virginia, and I have done better than the 10. Good luck in your future hunts
I’ve got someone who brings me their pennies in exchange for 💵. Most people aren’t aware that they may be giving 💰 away. I got no problem sorting them. Out of 500 I found 9/82’s, 6 were copper. I consider that a find. 👍
For too long I tossed all the 82s in with the zinc, the vast majority are copper... It takes so long going through pennies, why not take a few seconds to weigh the 82s?
Do not discount memorials and modern cents! If they are in great condition each is worth $1 up to several dozen dollars and even hundreds! CONDITION folks, is the attribute that is most often trashed.
I opened my 2nd box on Monday 1/5 gotten someone else’s coin collection 200 wheat pennies, 40 Indian head, 2 flying eagle, and one of the wheat pennies was a bu 1909 s vdb
The wheat pennies I put in 1 box, the Canadian pennies in another, and the copper I put in penny boxes and seal them up at 15 pounds, and the zinc I return to the bank. (I also have coin books that I'm trying to fill, including the Canadian)
@@ewastemike7700 oh yes.... I separate them as follows.. the king George I put in 2x2 flips, then the 53 to 79 in rolls, 80 & 81 in rolls, and 82 to 96 in rolls. Those last 3 are the different weights that were made.
I just penny hunt because I am retired and it kills time, don't really know what I am going to do with the copper I have found.
Mine will most likely go to one of my children. I hope they realize it's worth more than just cashing in pennies
I love the Beethoven in the background! Do you have a HAM radio license?
No I don't. My uncle had one, and he loved it. He spoke German with folks all over the world.

So you sell the 🌾 as copper weight?
I keep the wheaties separate from the memorial copper. I don't sell any

Thank you, and I hope you get one someday... I've still never gotten an Indian head penny while coin roll hunting.
Where do you plan to go to melt those copper cents?
I don't melt US coins. I store them as though they were a lesser value silver coin.
It's illegal to melt US copper cents. Also illegal to melt US "nickels" (they're also mostly copper, you know).
Sell them
Varieties and errors, do not forget those!
I keep them when I come across them, but I don't spend a lot of time looking for them.
Foreign coins sell very well!
👍👍
Keep that J.C. penny
Haha, I will, I'll keep it with the ones that have states stamped on them.
