  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #247
As something of a type-A personality, hiking to the top of Mount Whitney - the highest mountain peak in the continental U.S. -- has been on my list for awhile....and I finally got around to doing it! Rather than do it as a 2 or 3-day backpacking trip, I attempted to do the whole thing in one day: 22 miles, 6100 feet of elevation gain. YIKES!!!
P.S. Here's the link to my awesome Zojirushi thermos: goo.gl/KsrxD8

There is a film of a soccer game where the pitch was struck my lightning, several of the players collapsed and were badly hurt, but several players were fine. They didn't even feel it. But those that were hurt and those that were was not correspond to how far they where from where the lightning hit the ground,
The factor that saved those that were not hurt, all the players that were unhurt had only opne foot on the ground, while all the players that were hurt had both feet on the ground.

I love this video! I’ve done this hike 3 times, first as a two nighter, then as an overnighter, then finally as a day hike. We started at 4:00 am and that was good. Got to the summit a little before noon, but my buddy really struggled up the switchbacks to Trail Crest.
One time, on the summit in perfectly clear blue skies, posing for a photo my buddy asked what was up with my (shoulder-length) hair? It was standing straight up. I shouted ‘run!’ And we made it to the shelter. Lightning started crashing all around. We’d heard the shelter wasn’t safe, so we were standing in the doorway (pre-remodel). When it eased up we bailed back to Trail Crest, then down. Fun times 😁

Loved the cabin.. gotta look up “the incident “ …
I have only been to the base of Whitney , and have seen it many times from afar off 395 .. had no idea about the lake and streams that abound up there!
What a beautiful hike !! Thanks so much for making this !
And congrats on doing it a day!
Also.. know it had to be freezing .. was surprised at seeing the guy in shorts at the top ! WTH ?

Much respect for Wonderhussy for climbing Mt. Whitney in one day. I climbed it many years ago but did at the end of a week's long hike coming from the other side of the mountain traveling south down the John Muir trail. It was in August and a storm was brewing as we approached the summit. When we got top we heard lightning had struck the hut about an hour before we got there. Fortunately, no one was killed.

Hiking Whitney under a full moon is awesome. If you get a visible moon during the beginning of the hike in early morning, it lites up the granite walls almost like daytime. You can easily hike the trail without a flash-light. September is definitely the best time to go to avoid snow, but I did get caught in a blizzard one year, and canceled another trip due to a big snowstorm the night before my hike.

I swear, seeing how physical most of your adventures are, you probably can crack open walnuts between your knees, LOL. I also think your respect for the trails and landmarks should be commended. Your leave things as you found them and clean up after yourself attitude towards these locations is beautiful. Your great mindset to preserve while you explore is what made me subscribe. Brings back old memories, I did that hike in 1995! Six of us started, only three including me made it to the top. Couple of altitude casualties and one guy stopped from exhaustion. Finally finished in the dark. The logs across the creek near the trailhead are scary after dark, I walked across those at about 10 PM at night. To do this you need to be in good shape, I was 45 years old and in those days ran a marathon and plenty of 10K's not to mention multiple test hikes at about 13,000 ft. near Palm Springs for preparation.

    • @grega8586

Ummm... I'm late to the party, but just had to say... I don't think your altitude claim around Palm Springs is anywhere close to accurate. San Jacinto is only 10,834 and San Gorgonio is 11,503...

Good video. I was a SERE in the military for four years and aside from that have done the Whitney hike twice. The problem I see with your method is that it is certainly possible and likely to be successful, but you were definitely testing the limits. The weather can vary from year to year and can be quite severe. Had you encountered bad weather, or some physical problem (diarrhea, hypothermia, altitude sickness, injury) you would have been pushed beyond your limits. Once again it can be done and is done often, but then there is that one chance. Better when in nature to stay well within safe limits, often people will mock you for doing so, but some of them are dead, I know because I was occasionally sent to find them and did. There is a quote by the poet Robert Service, "I have fought the wild, and the wild has won." All that aside, I wish you had taken a nude photo at the top.:)

I know this hike. Back in 1979 I hooked up with several other seasoned back packers & mountain goats. And we took off on the John Mur trail, which then became a pacific crest adventure hike of a life time. Originally we only planed to hike Mount Whitney to Yosemite. But 3 months latter we were at the north fork of the feather River area before we called it quits. 3 months later. It was the longest endurance hike of my life but well worth the adventure in God's Country. And after that trip I didn't back pack for another 9 yrs. That was back in the day when men still had the right stuff & a sense of adventure.

1979 was back in the day when it was a wilderness experience and we met very few people on the trail. Now the trails are crowded - the media and high tech have made hiking an easy, fashionable event. It used to be a joy to see another hiker on the trail, now the crowds are dispiriting.

@ Solohoh those were the days my friend. I'll never for get picking up a copy of sunset magazine & seeing my favorite county being featured & within a year what had been a pristine example of the old Sierra's was turned into a disaster zone. With the ecosystem left in shambles. And before I gave up hiking & back packing due to a back injury. I was meeting people who were way out of their element and never should have left the city.

Wow, that's quite the cross section of "Humanity" goes on a hike. Every possible variant of American seeking a transformative experience, quietly. Kinda like a coming of age ritual in a vacuum packed, freeze dried, time and space experience module. In 1959 there were no permits. Only a brevity of signs. No advice, No warnings, No people really. My friend and I were the only people we saw on the hike all the way up and down. But the physicality of the trail looks the same, exactly as it did 'back in the day' as they say. The hut, or cabin was the same except -- No Graffitti --. Standing at Trail Crest was the clincher. Sequoia and green to the West, and the Owens River Valley with desert to the East and on to the White Mountains and Death Valley. The contrast could not be more dramatic and impressed me beyond imagining. I had grown up in Southern California and knew about the history of getting the water to grow Los Angeles, That story was eventually chronicled in Jack Nicholson's "China Town". The Owen's River Valley made LA bloom like a big fat rose. But standing on Trail Crest you could not tell about the finite nature of resources on that scale. Down in the valley town of Lone Pine you could barely get a rise out of the locals about Mount Whitney. They could point you toward the road up to the Portal but it was not a destination.

AWESOME! This chick must be in good shape because I've been told this is a challenging hike. Also, one should bring sunglasses and sunblock because my friend told me he got the worst sunburn of his life at the top, and he claims he only took his shirt off for about ten minutes to cool down. She must be very fit, and people claiming to hike Mt. Whitney in five hours, I don't know if the math works on that. My friends say they it took them Dawn to dusk round trip. This chick is very cool! 👍😀💋

Another great video. I love your spirit of adventure. I've hiked to the top of Whitney three times, always as a backpack and always from the West side. First time in 1965, then 1975 and one last time in early 2000's. Keep up your adventures.
