Hello Wonderhussy. The John who left the notes about Gunner is my husband. He and his hunting buddies have been frequenting this Cabin for many years. One of his friends is the Artist who painted the Chukar hanging on the wall. He also follows you and told us about your TH-cam post and how you found the notes about our lost GSP Gunner.
Here is the story: It was a Monday morning when the group hiked to the upper springs. As they reached the top Gunner took off chasing some wild horses. They were not able to catch up to the running animals and Gunner was lost. They spent hours on foot looking for him. They finally went back to camp to see if Gunner would show up there. No luck. They spent an extra night to see if he'd show up and spent more time looking for him. Gunner is a trained bird dog and a beloved family member so we were very distraught at this point. The guys finally had to break camp and return home. They were heartbroken! I started to post on all the missing pet facebook pages and calling animal shelters in the area. I also called the China Lake military base to see if they had spotted him nearby. They told me they'd be out in their helicopters and they would look for him. That gave us some hope. We made several more trips out there to look for him. We live in Orange County Ca so this was several hours of traveling and many miles of hiking over a period of 7 days. We posted his mug shot all over the desert and followed up on false sightings. We were starting to lose hope when we got a call on Sunday morning just before we were heading back out. The voice on the other end said, "Hey did you lose a dog?" A family traveling home from the remote desert town of Darwin spotted Gunner walking down the 190 about 20 miles from where he was lost. They stopped and rounded him up, checked his collar and called us. We were overjoyed!! The family happened to live in OC just 20 mins from us so we were able to meet them at their home upon returning from their trip. Except for losing about 15 lb, Gunner was in good shape. We wish he could talk so he could tell us about his adventure and how he survived. Luckily it was in the fall and temps were mild. We are so grateful to the family who took the time to stop to check on Gunner. We have great photos as they reunited us with Gunner. For the record, hunting dogs are not kept on leashes when they are training. What we should have had on him was a GPS collar and we learned that lesson the hard way. Yes, he has one now. We just found out that he is going to be a Dad. His girlfriend is expecting 9 puppies due in August!

Petroglyphs are scattered along the canyon between the lower and upper springs, they are attributed to people that preceded the Shoshone by thousands of years. Further up the canyon you'll find the stone foundation of a cabin along with an old corral, possibly used by mustangers rounding up wild horses common to the area. Glad to read Gunner found his way home.

My dad lived in Trona as a teenager and lived around the Southwest for his life. He was a hunter and fisherman and told me that chukker presented a challenge to hinters because they were small and elusive and would put a hunter to his toughest skill levels to find and kill. I myself never saw the joy of hunting. Your videos always remind me of my dad, he once worked at Area 51 and he lived in Death Valley, he was a radar technician so we travelled all over the area for his job. He loved the desert!

More in the cabin than I imagined. You are respectful of the owner by blocking out the name. Staying 3 days there makes sense. Wow built in 1978! Sad about the lost dog! Yes I agree needs a little cleaning up before staying. Love it when you break into a song! A great view from the rock. Love Joshua trees! Three songs- awesome 👌! Definitely tasty dinner 🍽! That is a good spot for the flag. Hopefully no one takes it!! Love O'REILLY 'so. Nice note you left!😊 That old log book sheds some light on the time of the 70s and 80s. That last note was cool!

I recently lived between two popular campgrounds in Santa Cruz County, Ca. Spent a decade living there. A KOA on one side, a state campground on the other side. Manresa, if you need a clue. I saw so many pets left behind by owners on some kind of schedule. They tended to end up in my front yard. Calling the local county animal control/SPCA... Trying to take care of them myself, posting notices on the KOA bulletin board. I had a neighbor that complained every time a stray showed up in our common yard... Bagging on me to try to support them. All about protecting her Little Shits Tseu dog that lived in an in an outdoor cage accessed by a doggie door.

Again, and....its not a chew toy. We call that a bumper. Reason is because plastic ones are essentially the bumpers you hang over the side of a boat to prevent damage, "bumpin" into the dock. Waterfowl men use them more for retrieving skills. We sometimes plant scented bumpers to train scenting and subsequent pointing of the bird.

Also the pack rats crawl up/down the chimney, so this is one cabin you don't want to sleep in if you don't like nightly creepy crawlers. Happy travels

Your beans and BS looked pretty good. My dinner was similar. Two avocados chopped and topped with salsa! Mmm delish!

Well just read the story about Gunner, and I am so happy that he is alive and well and is going to be a Daddy. 😀😀😀😀😀 Life is good when a good Samaritan comes along and does the right thing. Just wish everybody could be that way. God Bless those that are.

I hope gunner made it to that small town and someone is taking care of him, we can only hope and pray. Be careful out there that desert is unforgiving, hiking on any trail in flip flops is not good. Hiking boots can save you some serious trouble if you need to run, or come across snakes. You don't want to hit a toe on a cactus. Be safe, WH.

Nice little volunteer cabin but sorry to hear about the dog. I hope you didn’t get to exhausted from moving everything around. Sorry to hear about your near death experience but we will find out next time what happens.

The dog toy looks like a training dummy, used for getting bird dogs to retrieve a fallen bird. Typically, a trainer might put a few drops of scent on the dummy or rub it with feathers from the appropriate species before tossing it for the dog to retrieve. Some trainers use a cylindrical stuffed canvas dummy that is fired from a launcher powered by blank cartridges. The poor lost pooch was of a bird dog breed, so that was probably his training dummy, rather than simply a toy. Chuckars (Hungarian Partridges) are a game species and are good eating, if one is into upland game birds (quail, pheasant, dove, grouse, turkey, etc.). So sad to lose a beloved animal like that. If they never recovered the dog, hopefully it found another home nearby. Interesting episode here. Stay safe. (Update: I see that "Gunner" was found and returned to his family. Yay! Very cool!)
